Review from Andrew H.
i've said it before and i'm happy to say it again, i love late night ethiopian food. while it's not my favored lalibela, axum was closer and my tummy was grumbling. it must have been early because it was still fairly empty when we went in which was great for us because we simply wanted to have stuff our faces with injera and good, quality food.
i can't actually remember what we ordered, but i'm pretty sure the intoxication had a lot to do with that. the idea of a group mixed platter sounds familiar enough to make me feel like that's what we got. whatever it was, the four of us who were there definitely had enough to stuff our faces to the point where i wasn't even up to the challenge to finish off the base injera that has soaked up all the flavors of the individual dishes...and that's usually the best part!
the fact that you can find all sorts of late night cuisine to satisfy your drunken urges is what i love most about the u st area, and axum is definitely on my list of options now. -

It's always a good sign when you're the only non-Ethiopian in an Ethiopian joint. Our taxicab driver recommended this place. Thanks, buddy!
Well seasoned (read: spicy!) food, BF says the meat dishes were off the hook. Friendly and efficient service. Decor could use some help, but it's clear that they're putting their effort and dinero into the food. I know Etete two doors down has lovely furniture but resist the urge to be boorgie and go to Axum instead!Listed in: Taxation Without…

I am a big fan of Ethiopian food. I got couple of coupons from http://restaurant.com to the ethiopian restaurants they had - Axum was one of them.
Unlike the other review here, I had no problem getting my coupon accepted. The waitress recommended an Ethiopian beer, and my and my friend were pleasantly surprised with the Meta Beer she brought us. I ordered the Kitfo and short ribs on their special sauce.
The Kitfo was more like just grounded beef and had some cottage cheese on the side. Nothing special to say the least. The short ribs were poor for the most part - probably some of the thinnest ribs I have seen. But the house special sauce was interesting, it was a concoction with fruit that just had a nice taste to it.
I came here with a coupon - the experience was not bad. But, there are many other great Ethiopian restaurants in the DC area to have to come back to this one. Not horrible, but not worth a second chance either. -

The ethiopian food is about average compared the other others i've been to. Very tight seating. I tipped in cash 20% but the waitress took it upon herself to charge another 30% tip to my card. I called and the manager said he would fix it right away and never did, when i called back he avoided my calls...so beware! (won't be going there again needless to say)

Summary - Love love love the food. Surprisingly clean bathrooms! - looks like it was recently remodeled, floor to ceiling tile! Great service. Order the Minchat Abish.
Parking - street parking - It's DC what can you expect? We lucked out and found neighborhood parking. We walked maybe half a mile to Axum. WORD OF CAUTION: we noticed that there was broken glass from two cars. I might suggest metro or cabbing it for your cars sake. It's truly not that bad, but I am one to err on the side of caution. My friend's car got broken in TWICE already but at the time she drove a 2010 Honda Accord with new tags.
Decor 3/5 - Low lighting with an awkwardly placed table cloth, cramped, and tvs scattered about. IThe place seemed to be making due with what it had. Would I recommend this place for a date? Maybe, if you're feeling adventurous and not bougie. A chill group of friends who want to try something new? Definitely! When we came here, there were mixes of young couples/groups and mid-50's-60's groups from different ethnicities as well as Ethiopian (which was a relief/a sign that the food was good).
Food 5/5 - My friends and I were aiming for variety so we ordered Doro Wat (chicken), Atkil Wot (veg), Minchat Abish (beef), Lega Tibs (lamb). I would highly recommend ordering at LEAST one vegetarian dish, just for some difference in flavor and texture. We initially ordered Yegbeg Alicia (lamb) but our waitress insisted on a different lamb dish. We wanted to stick with the Yegbeg Alicia, but things might have gotten mixed up in the translation and we ended up with Lega Tibs. It wasn't a big deal because EVERYTHING WAS SO GOOD. Our group is notorious for our bottomless stomachs, and even with our raging hunger, we could not finish the entire thing. It was extremely filling! Hands down, our favorite dish was the Minchat Abish. The Atkil Wot was also VERY good. We couldn't place some of the vegetables but whatever it was, it was flavored to perfection. Not to mention, this was place was decently priced. Our entire meal was $48.00 for four entrees.
Service 4/5 - we got off to a bumpy start, but that's to be expected on a busy saturday night. Everyone was accommodating. We had two servers who were quick with the refills, asked us if we needed more injera, and wanted to know if we enjoyed our food.
Bathrooms 4/5 - CLEEAAAN! It was truly a nice surprise.
I am no where near an expert on Ethiopian food, but my taste buds will confirm, Axum had some good food.Listed in: Ethiopian Restaurants

My husband intended to bring home dinner from Ras Dashen, which is down the street from Axum, but they were out of every vegetarian dish but one! And it wasn't the one I wanted! So he walked down the street a bit and saw that Axum had a similar menu, and brought home dinner from here instead. It was as good as Ras Dashen's, and we will probably get our Ethiopian food from here now instead. I had a dish that was mostly green beans and carrots, and my husband had a spicy lentil dish. He said his was the best he had ever had. Mine was pretty good. We will be back.

I went to Axum and was charged a holding fee of $50.00 on my credit card. I called the owner/manager he told me that the hold would be released the next day. It has been 5 days and the $50.00 hold is still pending. My initial bill was only $11.99!!!!!!! I will NEVER pull out a credit card if I ever step foot in that place. I have never had $50.00 holding fee placed on my account from a restaurant this is outrageous!!!!!
