Love, love, love Jefferson! While I lived in the area he cut my hair and I loved it! So much in fact that even after I moved to California I made a point to visit my friends in DC (just because I wanted an excuse to fly accross the US to have Jefferson cut my hair again lol).

Sadly, my second cut wasn't as great as my first one (not sure why), but even then my hair looked pretty good.

It just so happens that I'll be in town again in a few weeks, and guess what? I can't wait to make another appointment (I hope he's still there). I've gotten several haircuts in the last year at high end salons, and none have come close to having Jefferson's skills.

Because I have thick, unruly, frizzy hair, other stylists always manage to make me look like Rachel from friends. Not Jefferson. He cuts my layers seamlessly!

This review is for Fathia who left VSL salon in Dupont Circle and is now at Axis just a few doors away; I am SO happy I found her, and she hasn't moved far those of you who are looking!  She is the BEST colorist in DC, no-nonsense, good conversation if you want, expertly talented; my golden locks have been returned by Fathia's gifted fingers!  Axis is a beautiful salon, calm, relaxing friendly and professional I'm so glad I found it.

4.25 stars.  Basically, I decided to go here because 1) Diego's oddly had let me down the last couple of times I had been there and 2) it was open on a Sunday.  This easily could become a monthly ritual; Axis knows what they are doing with hair.

I liked that the stylists listened to me and understood what I was trying to do (namely, a tapered professional look with subtle elements of noise).  Sure, I might not be able to replicate it given that I rarely use products at home, but Axis does have the ability to create a professional cut that at least has some level of flair.  For that, they should be commended.

The stylist that I used (Jamie) had helpful advice about what I can do with my generally unmanageable hair.  She didn't have to do anything too crazy with my hair so I can only say that she is masterful at creating a nice, clean professional look.  For me, that counts for a lot.  She also sent me a card in the mail thanking me for coming to the salon.  I thought that was a nice touch as well.

Axis was good enough for me to basically mail in my idea of trying the Urban Style Lab.  Sure, Axis might be expensive, but so is every place not named Diego's that gives you a top notch haircut.  Add in the convenience factor of being open on Sundays and Axis very well might be in an echelon all by itself.

Axis turned lemons in to lemonade!

I have to begin by saying that I have naturally curly hair hate to do anything with it. My idea of a good haircut is one that allows me to jump out of the shower and go; no comb, no brush and certainly no blow-dryer.

After a number of very good haircuts at Axis I had a bad experience when the stylist I frequented moved to another establishment. This stylist not only moved from the salon but decided to focus on coloring and forego cutting hair - so following was not an option. I made an appointment with someone else and as my previous post indicated - I received a bad haircut. Since I originally found the salon via Yelp I uncharacteristically decided to post a review.  I was surprised when the owner of the salon responded to my post asking how she might make it right. I was so intrigued with the idea that a service provider would actually try to please one of their customers that I decided to give the salon another go.

First and most importantly - George was very attentive and gave me exactly the haircut I asked for. Given my aversion to brushes and blow-dryers I might ask him to make a few recommendations next time - and there WILL BE A NEXT TIME! The entire staff was marvelous!

    I recommend Axis to all!

Jefferson cut my hair this morning. He knew exactly what I was envisioning and provided the perfect hairstyle :) I went from shoulder length hair to a wispy bob with long bangs.. shampoo and cut was $80. More expensive than I usually pay, but the cut was just about perfect.
He's been cutting hair for 22 years and has been at Axis for over 10 years! I will be returning :)

The place is ok, not A-Ok, but..Ok.

It's not super awesome, but they have chairs, mirrors, and offer you a tea/coffee, so the actual salon is fine by me. I wasn't expecting fireworks.

I was, however, hoping for awesome hair. 250$ later I'm thinking I'll wait a few weeks for my highlights to grow out and go somewhere else for a touch up.

210$ for highlights and a cut, 40$ in tips. Cut was from Jason highlights from Carrie.  Highlights I think are too brassy and not enough contrast..kinda blah all together. Cut was a trim and layers, which honestly, I'm not that impressed with. I just don't think the layers are well cut in, I think it's like my hair has two shelves (it's semi long and straight).

They are friendly and Jason seems really nice. Still, I wont be coming back.

I have been blonde for all of my life and have been getting highlights for 9 years, but recently I decided to go for a drastic change and dye my hair dark brown. Although Axis is pretty pricey, I wanted to go to a good place I could trust for such a drastic change. Axis seemed to have good reviews on yelp so I figured why not.

I gave the salon a call a few weeks ago and they were completely willing to dicuss things with me on the phone and even said I could come in for a free consultation (I wound up setting one up with Carrie).

When I went in, they were very friendly and listened to all my concerns about changing my hair color and told me what would work and what wouldn't. Also, when I went to set up an appt., Carrie was very willing to work around my work schedule and fit me in in between other people's appts.

I had my hair appt yesterday and I have absolutely no complaints. Everyone was so friendly and excited to see my hair "transformation". From the interaction I saw among staff members, it seemed to be a very pleasant environment, one in which they all got along and were willing to help each other out if one person was swamped.

Although I am still in shock and don't recognize my new self I do love the hair color and am pleased with the cut. I guess I'll have to wait and see the reactions I get from friends and family to really judge how it looks though haha.

WIth Axis' friendly and accompanying staff and excellent service, I will definitely be coming back here to get my hair done.

Since losing my longtime hair person when she left to have babies...I've been on a bit of a quest for the perfect highlights & cut.  I've utilized a few living socials & groupons to try out new places or revisit ones that I've tried in the past....so when a Living Social coupon came out for Axis, the cool place in DuPont with the fabulous window displays, I thought I'd try it out.

I called on a Friday, hoping to get squeezed in on a weekend sometime within the next month...they tried to get me in for the very next day (! unheard of !) but gave me a primo appt. for the very next Saturday with John Peter.

Upon arriving, I was offered something to drink, was seen right away, barely had time to crack a magazine to start reading.  John Peter was very nice and after a brief consultation, seemed genuinely excited to work his magic. I left the details up to him, just said I wanted pale blonde-ness and he did not disappoint.  He wasn't overly chatty, but just added the perfect amount of conversation and was very detail oriented and explained what he was doing at every turn and seemed happy to get the job done.  Throughout the visit, he offered to get me more to drink, mags to read, etc..  The place is a little cramped and noisy, but has a very cool, hip vibe to it and EVERYONE working there from the front desk to the shampoo person was overly nice.  I've had places where I've felt like I was kidnapped for 4 hours for simple highlights and a cut and this place had me out in well under 3 hours (bonus!).  The only hic-cup came at check out when the price for the service seemed really high, but not knowing if maybe other services had been thrown on, I gave up my living social coupon, paid and walked out to enjoy the new & fabulous 'do!  Over the weekend, bummed that I probably wouldn't go back to this fabulous place due to the services being so much higher than what they showed on their website, I decided to give a call and find out exactly how much everything was...turns out they accidentally added the $80 on to my services rather than deducting it - a fairly big whoops!  However, the person I spoke with on the phone could not have been more apologetic and fixed it right away, crediting me back the $80.  So this would have been a 5 star experience if not for that glitch. I tipped on the higher, incorrect amount, but that's okay...my hair looks better than it has in years!  Thank you Axis & John Peter!

The salon was nice, the receptionists were okay - not super friendly, but not rude either.

The shampoo area is TINY and bumped up right next to the stylists' stations, but the woman who did my shampoo was awesome. My stylist, whose name I cannot remember (!! - a guy, maybe Jason?) was good, very nice, and gave me a really nice haircut. I have short hair and originally was told (by a different stylist at a different salon) that I couldn't do straight bangs because of the texture of my hair and he made it happen and it was great. :) So I have complete confidence in his abilities.

The only downside, and what keeps me from giving it a 5, is that it was kind of pricey for the atmosphere. The salon should have been cleaner and a bit friendlier for the price you're paying, but overall I am happy with the service and would go there again no question.

I went there because it was close to my job. It is very understated but my cut was awesome. I have gone back a few times now and Julie is great! Not over pretentious or crowded.  A little spendy but the location is right next to the metro and they use Kerastase products - Bonus! Would def recommend.

I got the groupon for Axis and was surprised that they could see me that very weekend.  Turns out that must've been a mistake in their computer or whoever booked the appointment, because when I got there, it turned out my appointment had been made for a month later.  The receptionist was very apologetic for making me have to wait as they tried to figure out how they would accommodate my cut and color.  I really didn't have to wait very long at all, and again, they were very apologetic and gave me prosecco to enjoy while I waited.

Carie did my color which ended up making my roots look a brassy orange (I was touching up roots to match my dark red dye job) though it blended okay--for a month.  As it grew out and through shampoos, it started to look worse and worse.  Sue cut my hair, taking off all the split ends while still preserving a LOT of length.  She also convinced me to go for some lights bangs just on the side of my face; though I was skeptical, it turned out to be really subtle and looks very "finished," even when I put my hair up.  However, the haircut itself was uneven (possibly rushed?).

The salon itself is nothing fancy but the staff was very courteous. Including the groupon, I paid $140 total for the cut and color.

I loves me some Jason! I love him so much our hair relationship survived his cross-country move to CA a few years ago. I was heartbroken when he left, but pulled the pieces of my life back together and moved on and began to see a really nice woman named Yodit on U. Street. But when I heard Jason was coming back, well let's just say we've been together ever since. He knows exactly how to cut my extremely curly, has a mind of its own hair. And when I decided to finally take the plunge and try the Brazilian straightener last year, it was Jason I trusted to do it. And it turned out beautifully! I could not have been happier. I have recommended him to my sister and several friends, and they all love him. He is friendly and creative, but also really listens to what YOU want. He's definitely a keeper!

After months of suffering with frizzed out, hideous hair (ponytails every day, hurrah!) I decided that if I had to wear it every day it was worth investing in. I booked an appointment with Jefferson and although it sounds dramatic it was life-changing. I feel like I am younger, more put together and way more "me" than I have been in ages. I hate a hairdresser that listens to your ideas and proceeds to give you whatever mess they feel like. This was the opposite end of the spectrum. Even though I am overdue for a trim I continue to get compliments!

Jefferson was my stylist and he was fantastic. Friendly. Talented. He listened carefully to what I said I wanted and then proceeded to offer a few specifics about what he planned to do and then gave me exactly what I had asked for!  The entire experience was pleasant from the shampoo to the blow dry. The only thing that could have been better is if they'd let me put the tip on the receipt, but hey, that's not a deal breaker! I will definitely be back!

Janeen rocks!  I was looking for a change and looked into the Keratin treatment and she took the time to discuss it with me on the phone and in person before I even decided that I would do it.    She is professional, pleasant and clearly knows what she is doing.  I felt so comfortable with her that I even asked her to recommend a stylist for me so I wouldn't have to drive all the way from DC to Tysons to get my curly hair cut.

I will be going back to Axis for a haircut as well as additional Keratin treatments in the future thanks to Janeen!

Okay, so the place is nice.  They have gowns and meet you at the door.  Shampoo and blowdry included.  And my hair did not look bad when I left.  I went for a simple trim, I have long layered hair that I trim every six weeks to keep it long.  When I walked out, I was $65 poorer, with straight hair and split ends.  Will not return.

Axis salon is well situated in the heart of Dupont Circle.  My stylist, Carrie, is kind, quick, and really listens. I have very long blonde hair and she does a great job and doesn't try to push any weird hair styles on me. It might not be the cheapest place in town but it's worth knowing you will walk out looking the way you intended!

Contrary to what I was expecting from the cool storefront, I didn't think the salon staff were warm or inviting.  The owner cut my hair and didn't listen to a thing I said, 10 minutes into it he cut off all the growth I had waited months to get.  I got the feeling from what I was seeing and hearing that the stylists have a They-Know-Best attitude.  Maybe if you are looking for a men's simple short cut it is okay, I won't go back.
