This trendy cafe is hidden in a super industrial neighborhood, without the typical hustle bustle in the city.  It's hard to imagine such cafe even exist until you step inside to the high ceiling and spacious interior.  The crowd is not overwhelming, so you can find a seat pretty fast, plus parking is easy.  Excellent place for lunch.

Outdoor patio is in the back which has cabanas as well. The lounge area with sofas are also a nice place to hang out.  I had their fish taco which is wrapped with a soft tortilla and a hard taco shell.  Their tomato basil soup is highly recommended, $3 portion is already a pretty good size portion.

I went here for lunch some time ago and they had a pretty good sashimi salad.  I've also had their bison burger which is pretty good.  Portions are small but is balanced with good taste.  It's got a trendy feel and decor with a nice eating area outside in the back.  Perfect for surfing the web on a nice day over a cup of coffee.  Service was quick and friendly.  It wasn't terribly crowded during lunch but I don't think it's location helps much.

Axis is one of those totally trendy Internet cafes that I feel like a total poser going into, but next time I have my mac with me, I will definitely sit by the fir place, sip my coffee, and then scarf down my burger.
After you order at the counter you have the choice of sitting outside on the patio, or inside on the couches or at a table. I have to admit, that if I had the day off, or a job where I got to type on my computer all day, I would definitely sit in Axis all day.
The Food
the Bison Burger is DELICIOUS!!!! The meat is fresh, the brioche roll is crispy, and whatever sauce is on here..YUM!
Mac and cheese-wasn't really what I wanted (Kraft, Circa, Alembic)...there was not melty ooey gooey cheese, it was more a bow tie pasta with mushrooms and a butter sauce sprinkled with cheese...Not that it was bad, but don't call it mac and cheese
Tomato basil soup delicious! The toasties it comes with are almost as good as Trader Joe's, which is saying a lot.
I'll be back for that burger...YUM!

If you have a couple of hours to kill on a Sunday afternoon, head on over to Axis for some lounge-y, artsy and s-l-o-w brunch experience.

My friend and I came in at noon and decided to sit inside.  The entire restaurant was empty, save for an aspiring writer (a struggling student?) lounging by the fireplace with his iBook.  Not what you would call a high margin customer.  Quiet, pleasant, relaxing music was playing.  12 or so abstract art paintings, priced in the $1K - $4K range, adorned gray concrete walls.  I wondered if they ever sold any paintings...  5 waiters congregated by the bar in the corner.

The food was pretty good.  I had an eggs Benedict with home fries, and my friend had a spinach and cheese omelet with home fries.  The Serrano ham in the eggs Benedict was really good, and the hollandaise sauce, although a bit fatty, was delicious.

Why does the place get two stars you ask?  Because the service S-U-C-K-E-D.  Actually, "SUCKED" would be a compliment.  Service was non-existent.  I had never felt more ignored in a restaurant in my whole life.  The 5 waiters by the bar seemed very interested in talking to one another, drinking coffee and occasionally checking up on 'the large party" seated outside.  They were NOT interested in helping us.

My resourceful friend procured a pitcher of water and poured it into our water glasses.  About 10 minutes later, our butter croissant arrived.  5 minutes after that, the food arrived . . . for our waitress.  She sat there at the bar, eating OUR food.  Well, it wasn't literally our food, but it sure felt like it.  A few minutes later, the omelet and the eggs Benedict arrived.  My friend asked for ketchup, but the ketchup never came.  Finally, he had to get up, go to the bar and get it himself.  If I wanted to get my own condiments, I'd go to a fast food restaurant, thank you very much.  Interestingly enough, they asked my friend if he wanted another latte, but they never bothered to refill my iced tea.

It's a fun Potrero Hill place with a neighborhood feel and lots of free parking for those from the other parts of the City.  I'd heard a lot about it, and I really wanted to like it.  I've even tried to come up with an excuse for the lack of service and lack of attention, but I just can't see it.  Unless . . . they intentionally keep you there longer to get you to buy a painting or two?

Any ideas?

The sandwiches are an eclectic mix of ingredients without being overly shi-shi. It's not overly busy at lunch due to the "middle of nowhere" location. The atmosphere reminds me of some sort of upscale fusion mall eatery.

Though this spot was a lil bit of a trek from my digs in the inner sunset,  the food was certainly tasty and worth the trek but the beverage options left something to be desired.

We were a party of 6 and everyone found their dishes to be quite good: egg sandwich, eggs benedict, waffles, bison burger, egg scramble and the pizza.  Price per person inc 2 bottles of wine was $23 so not bad at all.

The main detractor was that since we were having Sunday brunch we expected to have champagne drinkees - two of which are featured on the menu.  Sadly, there were out of champagne. OUT OF CHAMPAGNE??? How can you open for brunch and be OUT OF CHAMPAGNE. The two go hand in hand. Get thee to Bev Mo' or Costco ASAP.

Alas, a Riesling was suggested and consumed, but when we went to order a second bottle of that they were OUT OF THAT TOO!  So then we had to try some other white wine.

Service: nice but a lil aloof..I don't think my water got refilled and I was never able to catch the waitresses attention to add something to the order.

Decor: industrial chic or something along those lines.

Atmosphere: well on a Sunday at 12:30 pm it was adults inside and families with young children all over the patio area. It was almost like the segregated the two groups. I think there might have been some sort of kids bday party going on out there so umm maybe it isn't always like that....on a sunny day some adult patio action could be nice.

For all you work-from-home people, this place is what you've been searching for. That's how I feel, at least. I love the fact that they have free Internet, and there is still place to sit. I've always found a table whenever I've gone there. The food menu is a bit all over the place, but they have a great grilled cheese sandwich that is perfect to nibble on while getting some work done on your laptop. The coffee does it's trick, but if you are so inclined, you can also kick back with a bottle of beer and just relax. The music sets the vibe, but isn't too loud so that you can't think. Everyone I've seen there is helpful and friendly - both the wait staff and patrons alike. It's just a chill atmosphere where you can relax and get some work done.

Four stars for the back patio cabanas.  Make me wanna say 'where's the pool?'  I know they had nothing to do with the smoking hot day I ended up there, but I sure did appreciate it and the delish white wine.  I'm guessing the neighborhood gets more sunny days a year than others, making the back a real asset.

Did not even check out the art or the food.

I work in the neighborhood, so I had so much hope for this spot.

Cons:
This place is really trying to be too cool for school.  They removed the overhead chalkboard style menu in favor of printed menus - giving it a more formal feel, and the chance to raise prices.  But even worse is that this place is sloooooooow.  Like 30+ mins for a sandwich slow - even when they aren't busy.  Honestly, I thought it was a one off experience, but ever few months I return to find they still can't figure out how to get everyone's food on time, and at the same time.

Pros:
Great for coffee (fast service), free wifi, and nice outdoor seating.

They have wireless here so I come here with my computer to work. Feels safe, parking is easy around. Seems like everybody coming in has a Mac too so hey it's my people (Apple fan here). The place is very modern and chic looking with lots of grey, clean lines, abstract art, not much clutter. There is a couch area by the fireplace, lots of tables, an outside courtyard.  The menu does not have to many items on it but they are tasty. I think I had some salad with tuna the first time, it was very good.

You would never think to look for a nice cafe in this neighborhood.  Yes, it's close to the California College of the Arts is practically next door.  But it's mostly warehouses and the streets are mostly deserted.

So how pleasant to enter the Axis Cafe.  If anyone knows how to make stone and tile look warm and inviting, these guys do.

There's a nice inside space for eating/laptopping but best of all is the huge patio in back.  Lots of tables (with umbrellas) and also some sofas arranged around a fireplace.  Space heaters on full blast when it's cool (I advise you to still dress warmly).

The best thing is their $4.50 grilled cheese sandwich.  $4.50 for a sandwich and salad sounds cheap.  Although some of you may think it's too much for a simple grilled cheese.  But let me tell you, this is the best grilled cheese - EVER!  They do a combination of cheddar and swiss cheese and the bread is grilled to a golden perfection without overly drying/toasting the bread.  For that amount you can even throw in a $3 small tomato soup on the side to go with all that grilled cheesy goodness (which comes with excellent bread chips).

I could seriously consider eating here every day.

Bike Parking: They let you bring in your bike and park it out in the patio.  NP.

Diamond in the rough. Uber-trendy cafe in an otherwise boring industrial area. Nice secluded outdoor seating for the sunny days.
I had the eggs bennedict. They add artichoke, and have a lemon-heavy hollandaise sauce (translation: a bit too much, but still nice), and the poached eggs were a little overcooked.
I was satisfied, but not overly impressed. The major downer was the slow service, there were plenty of staff for the barely half-full cafe, but they seemed to be having a chilled out Sunday too.

I heart the Axis Cafe!
I work nearby and it is my absolute favorite lunch spot near work.  The food is excellent, the prices more than fair.
The tomato basil soup and grilled chesse (made with artisan bread and good cheese) are my favorite stand-by but everything i've tried I enjoy.  Usually the menu is pretty standard but they do change it up to utilize local ingredients which is a definite plus.
The service tends to be a bit slow but the wait staff is friendly.  If your pressed for time call the order in ahead.
The decor is great, inside is a cozy art gallery atmosphere which includes a fireplace.  Outside is a great outdoor seating area with shaded or sunny seating.
Upscale but casual, never crowded, a great place to catch up with a friend.
This is also a great place for the little ones.

would that I could break my review of the Axis down into categories. Oh, I can! 3 stars is the average, folks.

Ambiance: 5 Stars! How could I have missed this lovely patio for all my years as a Potrero Hill denizen? So calm, sunny, protected from the wild summer winds!

Food: Um. 2 Stars? Menu looking so tasty, food on plate so mediocre. I mean, really. I think they served me a pizza on a Boboli crust!

Service: 2 Stars. They're snoozing. Lots of people seem to be working, and there's never a big crowd. Why so slow and ... slow?

that's it. I thought I would looove it (with 3 o's, yes) when I first walked in, but I came out disappointed

Axis cafe provides two San Francisco necessities: good food and interesting art (okay, maybe not completely critical, but without them we'd all be so sad, n'est-ce pas?) This peaceful sanctuary is located in a rather industrial no mans land off of 16th street, but being so close to my work, I am surprised I never knew about it until today, when taken for a work related lunch. Trendy decor, complete with a fireplace which appeared to be burning something (not sure if it was real or not) sets the tone for this ultra stylish yet completely chill dining experience. A few couches line the wall, which displays a handful of abstract paintings while a smattering of tables and chairs fill the remainder of the room (there appears to be additional seating on the outdoor patio).  After ordering our food at the counter (and munching on some delicious dark chocolate brownie samples), we sat down at our table inside as SF summers are not conducive to outdoor dining. Our food arrived relatively quickly, the waitress being extremely friendly. I had half a focaccia sandwich (grilled cornmeal encrusted tofu with shitake mushrooms, eggplant and spinach), salad, and spicy tomato basil soup with creme fraiche garnished with chevril and served with crostini. While the sandwich was tasty, and the bread crisp with a hint of olive oil, the tofu did not appear to have a very strong flavor and the cornmeal did not really add to the taste or texture. The mushrooms and eggplant were slightly bolder flavors in this combination which overall was quite pleasing.  The soup was amazing. I love the combination of tomatoes and basil, and this soup did not skimp on either of these flavors. There was a hint of spiciness as well, nothing too overpowering and the creme fraiche provided a perfect cream finish. I also tried the fried green tomato aspect of the scallop dish which tasted incredibly lemony. For dessert we shared some cranberry- pecan cookies which were incredibly moist and delicious. Overall I think Axis Cafe is a great addition to the neighborhood and now that I know about it, i will definitely be back for lunch!

I'll make it simple.

Food - 4, not because the food is great, rather the food is reasonably priced for what you pay.   Hmm...what happened to their flank steak and eggs dish?

Decor - 5 stars. Awesome industrial design, and the patio is great (although an extra umbrella for shade would be great)

Service - 2 stars.   Wait staff is friendly and nice, but the food takes a really long time to serve.  The cook must be severely short staffed, or incredibly inefficient.

Bottom line - worth a visit for Sunday brunch but bring your paper - you're in for a wait!

Fabulous lunch with a fabulous friend today at Axis.  When it comes to Potrero I'm still trying to build my list of go-to restaurants.  So far Just for You (beignets), Chez Papa (scallops), and Hard Knox (biscuits) are the sole contenders.  Axis has just been added to the list due to its delicious, affordable food and cozy feel.  For lunch, we shared a skirt steak sandwich and spicy ahi tuna salad.  Saddled up next to our entrees was a plate filled with olives and olive bread.  I can't wait to go on a warm day and sit outside!

I found this face from working on a project with some CCA folks.  It's a mellow modernist (aka west elm) spot to get coffee and work in the middle of nowhere.  Works well for meetings in the city when I don't want to deal with going downtown.

When is the last time you paid $1.09 for good iced coffee and sat in a lovely big back patio w/ sun and shade?  I discovered this place for lunch b/c a friend works nearby.  The food is good and reasonably priced, the portions are not huge but my half tofu sammich and salad filled me up and I was only out $5, well $6 including the iced coffee. Thrilled with the discovery! I'll be back.

I'm still not a fan.  I was intrigued about the bison burger so decided to give it another shot.  The bun was slathered in butter (or trans fat laden butter substitute) again, thereby negating any health benefits from the bison.  They must take a paint brush and dip it in grease and wipe that on the bun either before or during grilling.  The bun would be fine without the added fat.  My friend got the steak sandwich and it was on a different bun (ciabatta?) that looked much better and wasn't slathered in grease at all.  The bison had a weird taste to it also and was pretty tiny.  The yukon gold potatoes were just plain weak.  Soggy on the outside soggy on the inside.  I can make better potatoes at home without even trying.  And again, our food did not come out at the same time.  My friends had to wait about 10 minutes longer for their food to arrive.  This place is such a shame because the building and the outdoor area is really cool.  Maybe someday they'll get it together before they go out of business.

For better or for worse, Axis Cafe is the epitome of Soma Chic.  Heck, it's almost trendy enough to induce people from other neighborhoods to visit this nether-region voluntarily.  The fireplace is a nice touch, but on a day like today the obvious choice was to sit in the huge back courtyard (just like being back in LA).

Following the Yelper zeitgeist I tried the buffalo burger, and I don't regret it (the focaccia-esque bun is especially good).  Prices aren't too bad either, but portions are awfully small. (Yes, the rectangular plates look cool, but you can't eat them, can you?)  The line to order can be a little long, as can the wait for your food, so best not to be in a rush.

Wow, who knew a little cafe in SOMA could be so loaded with controversy?!?!  One of those 'I had no idea' moments until I came and read the other reviews on Yelp after I'd made this a regular lunch stop when I'm "running errands" on my lunch break.

Let's talk about the food first, as if there were nothing else to talk about.

The food is ridiculously good and reasonably priced.  The breads especially, on everything I've ever had here are top notch.  Last week I went specifically to try the Bison Burger - it BLEW MY MIND!  It was a gourmet hand-made burger sooo full of flavor i was speechless.  Everything else I've had here is great, ahi tuna salad, pasta, etc.

The spacious room and ultra modern industrial decor is not out of place in SOMA, although it's a little, uhhh, overdone I guess.  The couches are a nice touch to encourage people to hang out and the patio is just downright awesome.

Ok, now to the controversies:

Controversy A - Slow service and counter vs. table service.

For a short while last year, they changed to table service.  This was a mistake and they changed back to 'order at the counter and your food will come out to your table' service.  I much prefer this for lunch, so crisis averted.  Good job Axis.

The service is slow because there are actually chefs making your lunch when it's ordered from scratch.  This is why the food is so good.  The service here is generally friendly, as friendly as any similar cafe in SF anyway.  And they certainly don't give off any vibe that would indicate my next point being...

Controversy B - This place is owned by a church or cult or religious fanatics.

WHO CARES!?!?!!  After everything I just told you about this place, there's nothing that would give you any indication of this.

Listen people.  I have been to the heart of darkness and back when it comes to bible thumping religious fanatic cults.  I have seen shit in Texas you WILL NEVER see.  My dad made his living working for churches.  My mom was in the Worldwide Church of God when I was young.  Then, I spent years making a living playing drums for mega churches.  I have seen the inside of Robert Tilton's eerie church with the walls covered in crutches, eye patches, and wheelchairs of all the people he 'healed' and took money from.  The LORD SPOKE TO ME in tongues through Kenneth Copeland's right hand man (and I have the audio tape of it as a keepsake ha!)  I can assure you, Axis Cafe is harmless, they will not convert you.

Have we really become so Atheist in San Francisco that we are not even religiously tolerant anymore?  Do you expect me to believe you buy everything you own and eat from co-ops and not corporations.  Do you have any idea what's 'behind' or who owns most of what you consume?  Please.

Let's eat.

I have found my new favorite salad.

the spicy tuna salad is excellent. the combo of chopped tuna, jicama, hearts of palms and avocado served with mixed greens is perfection. Healthy, hearty, yummy.

Couldn't tell you what the dressing was like 'cause I didn't use it but bonus points for them because they gave me a side of balsamic when I asked for it.

Really relaxing atmosphere. Nice big room, quick and friendly service and fairly easy parking.

Wow. What a beautiful space. I came here for brunch and had a fantastic meal - the fried egg sandwich was delicious and I couldn't help but eat my two year old son's order of pancake topped with blueberry compote, sour cream and chopped pistachios. It wasn't crowded at all (and it's my first time there so don't know if this is just a fluke) and the outdoor patio looks like it would be such a fun place to have a party. My son had a great time playing in their kiddie playhouse. Service was friendly and attentive. Will definitely be back!!!!!!!

UPDATE: We came back for another visit but sat outside this time. This time I had the eggs benedict. Way too salty. Took a bite out of friend's banana foster french toast. HEAVENLY. Service continues to be attentive - warm and friendly. I can't tell you how nice it is to patronize a restaurant/cafe where I can eat, have a drink, talk to friends - while my kid runs around all over the place and no one seems to care! In fact, their kids are running around too. And it's all accepted as the natural order of things.  Love it.

Mmm this place's tomato basil soup is to die for. It's perfect tomato creamy goodness. The presentation is also gorgeous.

I really like their bison burger as well. Avocado, this yummy aioli, juicy meat, great burger. I've tried a few of their other sandwiches and I thought they were ok, nothing all that special.

Their cookies are also very tasty, slightly chewy but soft.

They do do half sandwiches here which is cool and its closer to half the price, not like some sandwich places that only knock off a dollar or two of the full price for half the sandwich. The prices here are pretty good, but its not a huge amount of food. The half and full sized sandwich both come with potatoes or a green salad. I like getting a half sandwich and a cup of soup for a light lunch; otherwise when I'm really hungry (and my guy friends do this normally), a full sandwich and a bowl of soup is good! Love this place for lunch, since its right by my work.

Axis rocks - the all purpose neighborhood locale. Child-friendliness is biggest draw for us.  LUV the outdoor play area!  Allows for adults to actually enjoy a meal while the kids entertain themselves (OK, we do  keep half an eye on them...).  Cool modern design avoids the typical SF glamorization of grunge.  What's so bad about clean floors anyway?  Menu is creative and consistent.
And for those times when you just gotta get out of the house to finish that project, the free wifi is just the trick.

Came here for lunch with a few coworkers...loved it!  Great atmosphere, nice big patio, pretty quick service.  I had the tomato basil soup - SO GOOD! and the tofu sandwich - also good, but not as good as the soup.  will be back!

I came here with my boyfriend for lunch last week when it was scorchingly hot.  We sat in the back patio and found some shade.  It was great.

You order from the counter and they bring the food to you.  There is a lot of seating throughout the restaurant, inside and outside.  Outside they have couches and nice comfy chairs like you'd have in your house as well as regular tables.

We were greeted by I'm guessing the manager and he was super friendly.  Told us how it all worked and made recommendations, which is rare for a place that doesn't have wait service.  All of the staff were super nice too.

My boyfriend got the bison burger (soooo good, so much more flavor than a hamburger) and I got the turkey sandwich (it was great with a nice chunk of bacon for a surprising kick).  We also got a chocolate cookie (nice and gooey) and a brownie (super rich, almost too chocolately for me).

I loved this place and I'd love to come back on another nice evening.

Although I find the potential benefit to some sketchy church *slightly* worrisome, there is much more money going to the whackjob scientologists due to general support of their endeavors.

So, I went here this past Friday, since I stayed home from work because of a monster sore throat/sinus headache/bodyache/badness.
Suffice to say, not the best stop when looking for comfort food.  The tomato soup, while normally would be considered delish, was way too spicy for my sick stomach.  And the baked goat cheese with greens -- again would be fabulous were it not for the excessive nuttiness to the dressing.  Ah well.  I was happy with the service and will hopefully return when I am in better form for the food.

Hidden near the industrial area of San Francisco, this hidden gem is the perfect spot to cozy up in on a lazy Saturday when all you have on your schedule is to check out the many garage sales in the Potrero Hill area. Reasonable prices, above average menu, and just a great place to be on a beautiful San Francisco day? You gotta love it.

I stop by here a couple times a week and can't believe its not more crowded than it is. LOVE it! Love it for brunch and for their (all too rare in SF) patio. Love it for a place to stop by in the PM during the week for a glass of wine (on their wicked patio). Love it for the fact that they don't take themselves too seriously. Good food that is definitely reasonable for what you get. Great community feel in a cool environment.

Only downside: Don't expect fast service. They'll give you a number for your table even if you order an espresso drink... But here again, at least they bring it to your table rather than making you wait for it by the register.

Good place.

Nice place, clean and the food was really good. The prices are reasonable and I half expect to be more expensive than it really is.

I happened to be meeting a friend for coffee at Axis Cafe at a time that overlapped with a special event they host once a month called, "ask a scientist." The place was packed with people who all appeared to be as intrigued as I was with the information that was being presented. I love the fact that this place is attempting to move beyond a merely "starbucks" approach to a community coffee joint. Kudos to the owners of Axis Cafe for their desire to improve the community.

PS - The Tea that I had was great too.

3/9 update - Returned today for breakfast, and I love this place even more. The pancake was absolutely smothered in strawberries, and the fruit side dish was huge. Complemented by one of the best chai latte's I've ever had, Axis delivered again on what was a beautiful Sunday morning.

Superb cafe where potrero hill/soma/mission converge. Went today for lunch, and very much enjoyed their tofu sandwich and barley soup. Fifth star comes from the diversity in the menu (soups, salads, sandwiches), half portion options and a side of greens with the meal.

We sat outside, which on a day like today was perfect. A mix of couches and tables, along with a fire pit when the weather gets colder. Inside is an eclectic array of art.

Good vibes oozing throughout, I will definitely return for breakfast.

The lunch time line can be a bit imposing. But if you can wait it out on a sunny afternoon, go for a lazy lunch in the back patio. Get a cup of the sunchoke, toasted almond, gruyere soup and half a sandwich (reuben for me). Or, share two sandwiches with a friend, (roasted turkey w/ pecorino, bacon, pear currant, chipotle mayo and calebrese sausage w/ fennel, dijon, grilled onion, watermelon relish) you won't be disappointed. Don't forget to wash it down with a Trumer Pils. Sun, Sandos, Suds, Sweet!

I love this space.  I sit out back to soak in the sun and cuddle up in front of the fireplace in the evenings.   I'm going to check out their live music on Fridays....

This place is fantastic.  Prices are totally reasonable, and the atmosphere is really great.  Nice patio out in back which is fabulous on a beautiful sunny day.  The food is de-lish, and the staff is super friendly.  Missing one star for having to wait for a table. But hey, I guess it's just that good.
