Why do they call this place awful in the name?....it is one of the best places you can eat while in this small town.. Don't let it's appearance from the outside fool you
I am very skeptical about trying crabcakes since I come from the best place that serves them up MD but, omg their crabcake was not huge like ours but had alot of crabmeat and not alot of filler.
They had live music upstairs but, we chose to eat in the dining room which is like a diner in a basement. The drinks are nice and tall the food portions are just enough.
My bf got the steak, I was bad I had a bite and it was delicious. The waitress was so nice, I could listen to her accent all day
People smile here...it's not "eat and get the hell out" like some places you encounter down here.
I would absolutely recommend this place to everyone to go to, it's not a dive but, it's laid back and casual and the food is outstanding and the servers are the best I encountered down there -

Had to visit as the name made me laugh, my Dad is named Arthur!
Great place for Lunch, Dinner or just having a beer ! Great atmosphere and good food. Service was quick and friendly. Check it out , you won't be disappointed. -

I'm basing this review on only one visit, so take it for it's worth. I visited the OBX recently and on my final night, rode my bike down to this fine establishment. I went upstairs since the raw bar was all I was looking for. Great view from up there for starters. I had some crab legs and shrimp. Both fantastic but the shrimp were about as good as I've ever had. Also imbibed in a couple concoctions which were quite good and not at all stingy on the booze. I cannot comment on the restaurant itself but the raw bar is a great place for a drink - or a meal if the limited menu is sufficient for you.

Went here twice on my weeks vacation and both times they did not disappoint. The oysters were fresh and very good as well as the spicy steamed shrimp. Their homemade cocktail sauce is just addictive. And if you like oysters and a little spice then the OBX shooter is a must try. It is an oyster shooter in beer with a great mixture of spices for that added kick. Service was excellent and very friendly. I will be back

Excellent food ! You have to get there earlier for the dinner rush of course, or else long wait...

I'm not a seafood person but this place converted me. If there was ever a place to consume 5000 calories in a meal, this is the place! Started with some lobster and crab bisque soup. I was apprehensive, since I've never had it before, but it was amazing. For apps, we got the spicy shrimp jalepeno poppers I got their chicken pasta special and it was very good. Also got the spicy crab dip and it was amazing. Everybody else got various seafood and liked it. Might have been the most gluttinous meal I've had. Prices were very fair and the service was some of the best I've ever had. Will absoluely come back here next time I'm in OBX.

Average. First visit. Party of 9 arrived at 6 pm and waited 1 hour to be seated in a tight table next to the bar. Very good drinks and excellent table service. All appetizers and entrees were average. No one felt excited about their meal which included various broiled, grilled, and fried fish, shrimps, crab cakes, and snow crabs. Loud and lively atmosphere. Restrooms next to the bar were clean but really tight. Good night. Will be trying other seafood restaurants before returning.

Service my a$$. The food may be good but I didn't stay long enough to try it. I went here because I was looking forward to a nice meal and the nationally televised ESPN baseball game of the night. Red Sox vs. Rangers. When I asked for the bar tv to be changed to the game from the bravo channel and housewives of oc, I was denied the privilege of watching the game because the waitress was watching that show and it's her tv. Poooooor service in my mind, aren't I the paying customer? New Englanders boycott this place.

Awful Arthur's is very small when compared to the all-you-can-eat-until-you-drop restaurants that proliferate OBX. You won't find a cavernous interior with 300 tables. Besides the raw bar, there's maybe 15-20 tables. If you go there between 6pm-10pm, you will wait for a table, so go early. Parking is at a premium, so go early.
What makes Awful Arthur's unique is that it is a locals hangout, which is evidenced by the fact that it is open year round. Take a trip to OBX off season and you'll be amazed at how many of your favorite restaurants will be closed until spring. It isn't that way for Awful Arthur's. Why? Because they are the best!
I've eaten at Awful Arthur's many times and they have never disappointed me. In fact, I consider eating there the highlight of my trip to OBX. The seafood is cooked to perfection. Other restaurants will fry their seafood to "deep fried hell" and bread it to death, but Awful Arthur's lighly breads and cook their seafood correctly. Their hush-puppies are fried hard to a dark brown color, which is far better than tan colored and doughy like other restaurants. Even their kid's menu items are delicious.
Outside of New Orleans or some high dollar fru-fru restaurant, this is the best seafood you can get this close to the Mason-Dixon line. -

This was my second visit to Awful Arthur's, and it went much better than the first. My first experience was met with a clueless hostess, an impersonal waitress, and "meh" food. This time, however, was a different story.
We were seated immediately and soon greeted by a very welcoming waitress who was quite knowledgeable about the daily specials, new drinks, and the catch of the day. She made sure we had everything we needed, and even thanked us as we left! Small things, yes, but they make a big difference.
The food was very well seasoned and tasted incredibly fresh. They are known for their steamer and raw bar selections - maybe I'll go that route next visit. This time, though, I was after their famous fried oysters. Golden and crispy and tasted like the sea - perfect! I also tried some of the house brew: Awful Ale. It's a rich brown ale with smooth malt characters, a slight nuttiness, and just enough hoppy "bite" to give it body and character; not "awful" at all.
Maybe it was because it was busy the first time, or maybe they've had some staff changes, but I'm glad I gave Awful Arthur's a second go.Listed in: OBX

My first complaint is that my wife and I had to wait 30m to get a seat when there were 5-6 four top tables open...the hostess made us wait until one of the two two-top tables were open where we were awkwardly sat close to another couple. I have to be honest here...after all the hype on Yelp I was a bit disappointed. I had a teriyaki tuna sandwich that wasn't great, paid $2 extra for fries which were good but that's pretty lame. The hushpuppies were pretty lousy...I wouldn't recommend them. My wife had a pasta dish with chicken that tasted like it had been cooked in bacon grease.
The table service was pretty good and the oysters were really good...but you can get the same oysters elsewhere a bit cheaper without the wait for a table. Ill be passing next time I'm in OBX -

Awful Arthurs is historic. Located a block from the ocean front in Kill Devil Hills; what started out as a simple oyster bar has become a must stop destination. Word to the wise, it is not on the main street in Kill Devil Hills, so you have to know where you are going. The restaurant is downstairs. They have an oyster bar where you can sit and chit chat with the regulars, or grab a table for more of a restaurant feel. You will want to get there before you are actually super hungry, because there is a wait unless you have made reservations. Upstairs is the bar area with a smaller menu. The upstairs area has live bands on the weekends and is a great place to just take it easy.
The food is your typical seafood restaurant fare. You have fried items and then have non-seafood items. When my wife and I last went; my wife, who is not a seafood person, got a cheeseburger plate. It was ok. Not that great, but not bad. I, of course, went for the oysters. Maybe I was just in the right mood, but I was very impressed. I order a half peck of oysters, about 32. They were steamed to perfect. Not over done, but still plump, rich and melt in your mouth delicious. When I walked out (barely) I knew I had a great meal. Also, next to the restaurant, Awful Arthurs has its own beach shop with t-shirts, drinks, nick knacks; everything you need for beach fun. Next time you are on the Outer Banks, take the time to jump over to Awful Arthurs for great food and a good local scene. -

We took a recent vacation to the Outer Banks. I was extremely excited to taste East Coast Seafood (mainly raw oysters) since 1. Seafood is my absolute favorite & 2. I live on the Texas Coast so I know good seafood, and wanted to compare.
So I took to YELP and found this little gem!
It reminded me of my favorite restaurant back home Black Diamond Oyster Bar...Very Divey.....Knick Knacks all over the wall...Already i was excited for great seafood.
We ordered a pitcher of Beer and 1/2 a PECK which I discovered was 2 1/2-3 dozen oysters. They were delicious!!! We also had some clams with bacon and parm cheese also fantastic. We ended up ordering another PECK of oysters for the grand total of about 6 dozen oysters between 2 people! Seriously tho you better check out Auful Arthurs when you on the Outer Banks! You will be sorry otherwise!!!! -

Awful Arthur's earns a resounding "eh."
Point the first: there was a pretty substantial wait. I gather this is typical. However, once we got in, things inside seemed pretty tame. Most of the tables were full, but there is a huge bar that was mostly empty, and the hostess didn't even offer us the option to sit at it. Perhaps they wanted us to wander around their gift shop while we waited for a table? That establishment, which is housed in a separate building of its own, was kind of unremarkable as well.
Point the second: Once we were finally seated, it took ten or fifteen minutes for our waitress to greet us and ask for our drink orders. Like I said, the tables were full, but it was a pretty low-key crowd and there were a lot of employees walking from one end of the room to the other with empty hands. Not really sure what they were doing, but surely they saw us sitting there.
Point the third: The food was actually pretty good. Actually, I have to qualify that. The fried stuff was good: fried crab, fried oysters, hush puppies, french fries. The unfried stuff was uninteresting at best. The "mixed vegetables" side dish definitely came from a Veg-All can.
Awful Arthur's wasn't awful. It wasn't excellent, either. I guess "Mediocre Arthur's" doesn't have the same ring, however.Listed in: Life on a Sand Dune

And yes, I know this is a chain, and I know they sell Tshirts and other stuff with their name on it, but the oysters are always fresh, the beer is always cold, and the service is always friendly, and it also can be quick if you get there either early or off season.
This is one of those restaurants where you need to know what they do, and what they don't do - and if you don't like what they do, then don't go. This is an oyster bar and fish house - that is what they do. There is no fancy or foo foo here, just good & fresh, reasonably priced fruits de mer.
In addition, they serve many brands of very cold beer, which some folks will order and consume along with their seafood of choice. This is the essence of this place. I find it very enjoyable from time to time. -

Decided to come here after reading the reviews. This place doesn't take reservations. There was an hour wait. We decided to go upstairs and wait. You can also order some food upstairs too. We got a dozen oysters. Man were they big!! They were pretty tasty and we also got a pound of crab legs. They were pretty tasty but a lil on the salty side. I'm guessing it's from the saltwater? O_o. We also ordered the crab/lobster bisque. That was good but a lil on the salty side as well.
After an hour, our table was ready. I was already quite full from the oysters/crab legs so I just ordered a side of hush puppies. Their hush puppies were a lot better than pigman's bbq. I munched off of the half pound steamed spiced crabs. They weren't bad. The bf ordered soft shell crabs. They were not good at all. Over all this place was "OK" -

This is the third year we've eaten here on vacation. The first time was great. The second time ok, and the third time was "meh". Don't get me wrong, the food is ok, but nothing mind blowing. Mainly we go because our kids want to go to the arcade on the pier across the street after.
Not sure I'd go back again. The whole place just seems dirty to me. We got seated late (after 9) near the bathroom. The floors were full of left over food from earlier patrons and napkins. It just felt like nobody had cleaned up or even bothered to. Kept hearing the flushing from the toilet and the hand drying machine in the bathroom.
The spiced shrimp are great, but a pain in the you know what to peel on your own, but tasty. The food in general is ok, but nothing mind-blowing. I would give it a shot once and decide for yourselves. Do try the cocktail sauce which is still the best I ever had and worth coming back for. -

Hands down our favorite place to eat while in town. Whether you're upstairs enjoying the view of the pier or downstairs in the main dining area you will be treated to great seafood and service!
Downstairs the daily specials are our favorites and the barracuda bites. The salad with tune is also a winner. Upstairs there is a limited bar menu but it's all amazing - shrimp, crab legs, oysters, and lobster bisque. Most nights we head straight upstairs for some oysters and some drinks.
The staff are friendliest on the beach and so welcoming. From the moment you walk in you're greeted with smiles and the top notch service continues straight till you leave.
Can't wait to go back! -

There are lots of mediocre places to get seafood in the Outer Banks, but this isn't one of them. Great oysters! Also loved the steamed shrimp and crab bisque.
Atmosphere is fun, noisy, and very casual. -

Good beer, jumbo fresh oysters, solid planks of fish on rolls? Yep all that and more at Awful Arthur's.
Parking lot was a nightmare though, as this is clearly a top tourist destination.
Did you know they have a real-live puffer fish in the back fish tank? I've never seen one outside of an aquarium, they're neat.
You're hear for the seafood on your plate(s) though, and despite the tourist crunch its worth the coin. -
Review from Lee H.
My first impression of the Outer Banks was that the majority of restaurants appeared to feature a cartoon mascot in a pirate costume with a name like Salty Sam's Seafood Sircus. I had done diligent research prior to our trip, and was expecting authentic seafood. What was this Disney-esque stuff doing in the untouched world of the Outer Banks?
I was a bit wary when we pulled up to Awful Arthur's, not only because it fit the anthropomorphic theme with a cartoon oyster peering out from the sign, but also because I was questioning anyone who thought it was a smart marketing move to include an adjective such as "awful" in its restaurant's name.
However, the yelp reviews were favorable and we were hankering for some local seafood, so I avoided eye contact with the cartoon oyster as we walked into the restaurant.
We opted for a seat at the bar where we watched two guys steaming shrimp, shucking oysters and serving up seafood.
I recently developed a taste for raw oysters and only the small Kumamoto variety with a healthy dose of mignonette sauce on the side. Feeling adventurous, I pulled the first of many "when in Rome" moves of the trip and ordered a half dozen local oysters. We watched as they were inspected and shucked before our eyes. What was presented to us was not the delicate variety we were used to seeing on the West Coast, but rather large, overgrown looking oysters. I doused my first one with horseradish, lemon and hot sauce and was surprised and relieved to discover that though it was huge in size, it was delicate in flavor. Each one tasted like the sea, went down with ease and left me wanting another half dozen.
We also went with a pound of steamed shrimp with the ubiquitous Old Bay seasoning. We tore through the pound and decided to up the ante and order local mahi mahi and scallops.
All were cooked perfectly and was the perfect start to our Outer Banks road trip.
For dessert, I decided to try the local Kill Devil cocktail, which consisted of beer, lemon, tomato juice with a oyster at the bottom.
Oysters for dessert? Welcome to the Outer Banks! -

A visit to Awful Arthur's is one of our many OBX traditions. I even have a t-shirt to show my loyalty. Though, who wouldn't want a tshirt with an ogling oyster on it?
There's always a wait, but that's a good sign, luckily they have a bar upstairs where you can order drinks and appetizers (including raw bar options) to keep you happy while you wait.
The service is fast and that's fine because the ambiance is somewhat lacking thus my 4 stars. However the food more than makes up for this. If you like crab you may be tempted by the Backfin Crab Burger - if you LOVE crab, just go straight for the snow crab legs, best I've ever had.Listed in: OBX

Definitely try the raw or steamed oysters here! They were phenomenal - fresh and nicely priced.
Service was NOT top notch in my opinion. The waiter was running around like a crazy man rushing us and messed up our bill at the end.
The other thing about this place - it is very busy during the busy season. The first time we came there the wait was 2 hours! -
Review from Sarath P.
The 3 days we were in town -- we headed to this spot TWICE for lunch! Quick service, friendly staff and delicious food! The first time, we had the steamed platter that included crab legs, clams, oysters and shrimp! The snow crab legs were meaty and the shrimp were flavorful and enormous. The clams and oysters were a bit on the overcooked side. I still ate everything though! :) The second time, I ordered the soft shell crab sandwich with a side of hush puppies while my fiancé ordered the crab cake sandwich. My soft-shell crab sandwich was incredible! The crab cake sandwich... was OK... it wasn't as "crabby" as Sam & Omie's crab cakes. The hushpuppies were wonderful as well. Glad I don't live here -- I'd be hitting this place up all the time!!

Well, if you're in the mood for fresher-than-fresh oysters, good steamed shrimp, draft beer, and really friendly bartenders and waitstaff, then you won't be dissapointed with Awful Arthur's.
It's popular, and deservedly so - the food is priced right and they stick to what they're good at. Seafood. The raw oysters are fabulous - cold, tender, and salty. Cocktail sauce, horseradish, and hot sauce are necessary accompinaments. The steamed shrimp were also fantastic, but peeling them is annoying. Yes, I'm lazy.
It is very busy - figure an hour wait at best - but there's simply not enough tables to go around. If you have a small group grab a spot at the bar; the place seems optimized for parties of 4 to 8.
The staff seemed unequivocally cool, always a bonus. -

Freshest mahi mahi that I have ever had. I had to wait for a table, but it was certainly worth the wait.

In the outer banks it feels like the dining choices are slim. How do you choose between eating at "Crabby Crabby I got Crabs last night," "Dirty D#$ks," and "I'm a mean dirty Pirate."
At first look, Awful Arthur's is of a similar breed. But after bellying up to the bar, we shouted out, "Oysters! Crab legs! Bisque! Spicy Shrimp! Hush Puppies!" All were cooked perfectly where shrimp peels come off easily. The raw oysters from the river in Virginia were so fresh that mini-crabs were still crawling around in them.
They don't seem to serve whole blue crabs, but have numerous apps that include the local crab - the feast we shared came with snow crab legs, but they were very fresh tasting.
The bartender downstairs and crowd at the bar (all eating dinner) were very fun and friendly. Our feast with a handful of drinks (all reasonably priced) each and every type of really fresh seafood we could possibly eat came to under $70 before tip. -

We went here our first night in the Outer Banks. There was about an hour wait, but we went up to the bar and I had a refreshing strawberry margarita that was great for a hot day. When we finally were seated, I ordered the seafood platter, which I would highly recommend. On advice from my friend I had the fried oysters, broiled scallops, and a Teriaki marinated fresh caught Tuna. I'm normally not a fan of oysters, but my friend said that they were amazing here, and he was definitely right. Normally they have a very strong aftertaste that I dislike, but these had almost none of that, and were just delicious little fried morsels. I got the scallops broiled, and that was a mistake. They were pretty mediocre, I mean they were still good, but the sauce was a little off, and some of the fried scallops I tried off of other plates were much better. The tuna however, was probably one of the best pieces of fish I've ever had. It was cooked perfectly, at a seared medium rare, and the teriaki marinade was delicious without overpowering the tuna. Truthfully, if I were to come here again, I would probably just order three fish dishes from the fresh caught list. I also enjoyed their hushpuppies, which if they'd had some confectioner sugar would have almost been like doughnuts.
One thing that was annoying about the place, there's another bar downstairs that really runs throughout most of the dining area. Consequentially, you have to watch crummy looking guys (one of them had a full on rat tail) try to pick up homely women, which wasn't really conducive to a pleasant dining experience. However, if you're into people watching it could be interesting dining entertainment. -
Review from Jon T.
We had a light, late meal at Awful Arthur's after eating our way from Fayetteville. We decided we were ready for a little seafood and ended up here.
The three of us all had lobster and crab bisque which was very thick and creamy, almost cheesy and fairly good. Probably was over thickened with flour. We enjoyed fried calamari which was fine, with nothing to really distinguish it. This was probably not a true test of Awful Arthur's which is after all, an oyster bar more than anything else. I'm sure it is fine for drinks and oysters. I would not recommend it for fine or distinctive dining, but it fit our needs for that particular night. -

Awful it's not!
What a great joint. Here's what you need to know about Arthur's. It's
got a reputation and a following so it's going to be busy. You can wait for a table or you can sit at the bar. There are two bar's with lot's of room and iMO you get better service.
The oysters are small, so order a dozen if you like them, they are tasty...but tiny.
They always have fresh fish and it will be good and plenty. I stopped in on Memorial day around lunch time and the place was slammed.
Fresh catch was awesome...two very large cuts of Dolphin....ur ah Mahi Mahi. It's served with fries, cole slaw and two hush puppies.
It was so much food, I had to get a go box.
The sweet tea is good too...they even offered me a go cup! -

Down to the OBX with the family and it happened to be my sister's birthday. This was our first time at Awful Arthur's but this won't be our last. Although it's definitely a casual restaurant, we totally fit in and were able to have a good and somewhat loud time without bothering anyone.
Our waitress started us off with our drinks (and brought my sister a special birthday drink on the house) and some great app, the crab balls and the calamari. We all had our fill of great seafood options ranging from clam strips to mahi mahi to shrimp and scallops. We hade plenty to eat and a really fun and warm environment.
We definitely had a nice time at Awful Arthur's. -

This bar is a great example of what the outer banks used to be before it became so popular and developed!
A simple bar on the beach serving good food in a verrrry relaxed atmosphere. The food is simple--nothing gourmet here. It's a great place to order some seafood, drink some beer sand hang out for a couple of hours. You almost feel like you are at home! -

This is simply the best. This was my first time back to the outer banks in five years and this place is still amazing.
Lobster and Crab Bisque was to die for and their steamed shrimp are amazing. You can walk right in and get a seat at the bar instead of waiting for tables.
Not sure what the "awful ale" was, but it was a great craft brew. I swear I'll eat here every day while I vacation here. -

We headed back to Arthur's after a failed attempt elsewhere yesterday because we knew what we were getting. Great service, fresh & fantastic food and a place we felt we could relax. Again, we ate at the bar -- simple & easy, no wait. Timmy, a bartender, mentioned it was much busier than typical. I had strawberry daiquiris and my husband had a beer. The steamed shrimp with J.O. seasoning is just perfect. My husband had the double chicken breast with cheese & ham on it and really enjoyed it. Loved the steamed red potatoes and the cold slaw - simple & good. We left with doggie bags. The restaurant is not large but seems to hold large parties pretty easily given how the tables are laid out. By far, this is our favorite place in OBX.

The best crab and oysters in OBX. Crab legs were huge and meaty, came to the table very hot with crisp shells. Clam strips are thick and meaty, and I have no idea how many people that basket is supposed to feed -- it's HUGE.
Kids menu is very skimpy, no big deal, but the service is stand-offish and cold (even after the season on a slow night) causing me to deduct a star.
