Yummmmm!
Went for brunch on Saturday. Great location and loved sitting on the porch. They even have heaters so if it's a little chilly, you can still enjoy the beautiful view of Old Town.
So, I had the veggie sandwich but I had them modify it a bit, which they were totally cool with. Instead of fresh red bell peppers, I had them use roasted red peppers and I'm not a vegetarian and love my meat, so I had them put some grilled chicken breast ($1 extra) on it too. A.m.a.z.i.n.g. So fresh and flavorful.
Next time, if I don't try something different, I'd order the sandwich with above changes plus maybe ask them to grill it...hmmm?? Yummm.
Oh, and their fries were to die for. Okay, I'm done. -

Stopped here one late morning to carb up on the way up for a hike. I was immediately impressed because all the people that seemed to be dining. There is a quaint little covered patio area, which was full of heaters to keep their outdoorsy patrons warm on that brisk morning.
We were seated inside: an adorable "country-home" type of feel from their window curtains and wall sconces, to their knicks and knacks.
Before browing the menu we ordered bloody Marys, one of the best I've had in a while (they even bottle and sell their own mix as well). The menu had a pretty wide breakfast selection. I saw something delicious, but wanted it modified: on croissant, egg-white only-hard, sour cream on the side, with fruit, which they gladly did.
My ordered came out PERFECTLY-a great surprise, given when I modify my order, which is often, 9 times out of 10 it comes out wrong, and this was no simple modification! KUDOS TO AWFUL ANNIE's!!
The food was perfect, service was country-cordial. I would DEFINITELY go back again! Kudos to Awful Annie's you've made me a fan! -

We stopped at this quaint spot on our way to hiking in Foresthill. A cool little spot in downtown Auburn. After a short wait (and some complementary coffee) we were seated at a small table right by the door. We ordered two small orange juices while we waited. The small orange juice was rediculously small, maybe 4-5 ounces. If I wanted a shooter I could've hit up the saloon down the street. We ordered our food, and I ordered another OJ since my thirst was nowhere near quenched. I ordered biscuits and gravy with a side of ham.. the food was very good.. no complaints there. My second tiny OJ arrived way late.. after we had finished our food.. meh.

The food is just ok, and I think they charge more than it's worth. We only come in a couple times a year, because each time we get reminded of why...the service is always bad. My parents say the same thing, it's like they have better things to do. Maybe they just know that their loyal customers keep coming back anyway. Obviously the yelpers are all fans, and I wish I was too. It's just an ok place for us. I enjoyed the french toast, but nine bucks for two small slices is crazy - they call it four slices, but it was two slices cut in half. My husband thought the biscuits and gravy were some of the worst he's had. There are so many better options in Auburn for a great breakfast or lunch. Places that will appreciate your business too.

Have been going to Annies for years! I love their breakfast : The Monterey Omelet and the Tofu Scramble sans eggs. Try the spiced hot tea or and breakfast treat for a "treat". They also have marvelous desserts. Only down side: when they get busy, serice can be way slow... but always worth the wait!

Sacramento, CA
Never go to a restaurant that puts itself in a negative light, let me tell you why. There is an expectation that when you go to a place like this, it is in fact not awful. The name is supposed to be funny- and the food is supposed to be GOOD. Waiting an hour for my food was awful. Listening to the waitress give us attitude because we wanted to either eat or leave is awful. Ordering drinks that NEVER come is awful. Getting an omelet that has a refrigeration taste with old bacon is awful. And paying $12.99 for a steak "sandwich" that is 1/3 fat served on top of one piece of soggy bread just downright stinks. If I could have gotten my money back, I would in an instant. I should have just walked out as she was bringing the food, but I was shaking from hunger. Awful Annie's lives up to it's name, it is truly awful.

After going back and looking at the reviews again (which I did because I thought maybe I missed something the first time around...) - I'm still feeling like I missed something. Perhaps we went on an off day... perhaps... there must be some reason. My fellow Yelpers are making me feel that I need to give it another shot.
My initial thought was to give this place two stars just in an attempt to counteract the seemingly high overall four star rating this place maintains. I honestly did not see anything impressive.
However, a two star would not be quite fair. The service was excellent. (Thank you, Claire!!) Points+ We had to wait about 15-20 min... that's fine - to be expected for a late brunch on a Sunday. No real problem there. They seated us within the time-frame they gave... good. Points earned.
The food... Hmmm... in a word... Mmeh. I can say that there was nothing bad... but also nothing noteworthy. My son had the Cinnamon French toast... the flavor was good. But they obviously used the old bread... I'm not naive, I know that is common... but it still came out chewy and 'stale'. My wife had the Monte Cristo... it was fair, kind of bland. I had the Eggs Benedict - again... fair. Nothing to write home about... Barely anything to write Yelp about... However, I want to make sure I'm not just reviewing the best and the worst (which is my common default), and want to make sure that others here another perspective.
Maybe... MAYBE... we'll give it another try... someday. We have had MUCH better food at the Brookside Grill across the street. Or next perhaps we'll see if we agree with folks about nearby Edelweiss. -

Whenever anyone asks me of breakfast locations in the Roseville/Auburn area, I always tell them to visit Awful Annie's. It's definitely worth the drive if you don't live in the area (which I don't) because the food is AMAZING! I've never had a bad meal and I would recommend either getting the french toast made with their special cinnamon bread or taking a loaf of the bread home for later.
The outdoor seating is awesome if it's a nice day. Don't forget to quiz your tablemates with the Trivial Pursuit cards while you wait. You never know what you'll learn while your food is cooking. -

Definitely nothing awful here!
Knowing my husband's love for Bloody Marys and Annie's claim to the best one in town, I thought that this would be the perfect spot to bring my hubby for his birthday breakfast - I was right!
We ordered a couple bloodies (my first ever! WHAT?) and they were super yum! The food was also delish. Not your average breakfast spot; tons of choices and everything was super fresh. -

The best breakfast place ever. I always choose to eat whatever egg's benedict they have on the special's menu and they never disappoint. I spice up my morning with either their famous orange spice tea or a fog bog. Whenever I'm in town, I always make sure to stop by Awful Annie's. It never disappoints.

I have been twice to Awful Annie's. The food is not that bad, but not that good. It won't give you a stomach ache. The portions are small. They are cheap with the meat in the turkey and chicken salads. They only give you a little bit of meat which tastes and looks processed and not fresh cooked. The prices are reasonable. This is a good place for being on a diet.

I came here fairly often enough, and usually got into the town around brunch time... take a #, because AA is not a secret, and well-known to the unbridled palate!
Great egg dishes and I would lean more toward breakfast than the lunch options. Usually a crowd; nice area in historic Auburn.
Thinking of breakfast right now.. hence this review!! -

I cannot believe I have not written a review for Awful Annie's before now! I have been here for lunch as well as brunch and both were fantastic! Although, if I were forced to choose one meal to eat there for the rest of eternity, it would definitely be brunch!
Sunday Brunch: Started with a really good Bloody Mary. For me, a Bloody Mary is always good, it's a just a matter of what "level" of good it reaches and this one was up there! Both me and my brunch companion asked for them extra spicy and were both happy happy with the resulting concoction! For my meal, I ordered a frittata off their "specials" menu which was full of veggies, then got the potatoes and for my toast, I asked them to substitute their apple cinnamon bread, which they did at a nominal up-charge. I was so happy with my meal. The portion was very generous - way more than I should have eaten - notice I said "should" instead of "could"? What can I say - I couldn't help myself!
The menu is pretty expansive - lots of choices. They even offer a couple of tofu scrambles.
The place was jammed, but the service was still really good. I like that they have a porch to eat on - which we did. I think we arrived at just the right time, which was 11ish, because when we left, there was quite a line waiting to get in. -

I loved aweful Annie's. We were in auburn for the day and decided to try it out.they close at 3 and we were unaware of it at the time after walking in at 215. All the waitress were really nice. Frost we started with a bloody Mary which was amazing. Great seasoning to it. I got the Turkey avo Blt and that was so good. I was very happy with everything.

I've been coming to Awful Annie's for Sunday brunch since I was just a wee little one. So many good memories here! Food is second to none, atmosphere is friendly and cutesy country. The outdoor patio can be very popular on warmer mornings. Prepare to wait for a table if you fancy eating outdoors. Perfect place to kick back, enjoy a bloody Mary and shoot the breeze with friends. Two thumbs up!

Perfect brunch spot in Auburn. Menu includes many breakfast and lunch items. If you like eggs Benedict, you'll love the many options they offer. And if they have a fresh pastry on the menu, order it - the highlight of our meal was a blueberry muffin with homemade whipped butter.

Don't let the name fool you, there is nothing awful about this place.
Ended up in Grass Valley this weekend and went here for a late breakfast with friends and family. It was amazing.
I ordered one of their specials, the Bruschetta w/ basil, tomatoes and onions..with two poached eggs on top. The bread was this artisan olive loaf that was amazing at sopping up the runny eggs yolk. It was served with fruit or potatoes. I chose the fruit and it was very fresh and good.
Everything around the table was great. My son has the banana waffle which he devoured. My husband the Mexican omelet which he loved. Their hash brown potatoes were really very good. Our friend ordered this amazing chicken sandwich with mushrooms and spinach with a side of clam chowder. The chowder was so good that we took some home for dinner that night...all the way back in the bay.
This section of California (Nevada City, Grass Valley, Auburn) have the best breakfast places. Awful Annie's is def one of them. -

I love this place! It's so cute! You have a choice of eating inside or outside, and both are wonderful. The food is great, especially if you are vegetarian. Great place to walk to and have a nice lunch, has a great location! Awful Annies= Not so awful.

I stopped over on my way to Tahoe. It's cute, in a 'slightly deranged mountaineers having a picnic' way. It had wood tables with vinyl gingham table cloths and paper napkins for lunch.
It was hot outside for a thin-blooded San Diegan, maybe 85-90, right on the edge where you'd sweat sitting still if it weren't for the breeze. The air conditioning was on full-blast inside - I mean I was shivering just walking in the door - so I ate outside on the porch and channeled my inner languid Southerner.
The Reuben was really good. Generous on the pastrami, a little too heavy on the thousand island, but the bread was toasted just right. Fries were excellent too. My iced tea and water were never empty.
Neat detail: the owner must have worked in Hollywood back in the day, or was a big sci-fi fan, because every wall of the bathroom had a promotional windbreaker framed on each wall. You know the type of jacket, from the 80's, shiny, with the knit cuffs on the sleeves and waist. There was a Blade Runner, a Star Trek, and two others. (PS, that's where I got the 'deranged' from.) -

Awful Annie's is awfully good! I'm so glad I was able to try this place! We had to wait a moment before being seated. Thankfully, we were seated indoors, because it was a chilly morning, even at 11:00. They have some neat, kitschy decor, including little roosters embroidered into the cushions. They also sell shirts and other miscellaneous items.
Our waitress was very sweet and prompt to get our orders and drink refills. I ordered the pesto chicken sandwich. Divine, melted fontina cheese, chicken, tomato and pesto on a grilled french roll. It also comes with lettuce and roasted red bell pepper, but I ordered it without those. It was a filling, delicious sandwich. I had their fries on the side-wonderfully thick, fresh and hot. I dipped everything in ranch. The total for my sandwich and their 1/3 pound burger with drinks came to $25.
Great experience-now I know what everyone raves about when they talk about Awful Annie's. I have to come back here for breakfast! -

We've lived in Auburn for many years and decided to give this place a try on a weekday since it's particularly crowded on weekends. We arrived at about 11:00am for lunch and the restaurant was about at 1/3 capacity. In spite of that, the service was extraordinarily slow. The wait staff was very attentive so I can only assume that the problem was in the kitchen. As a matter of fact, one of our orders was incorrect and we witnessed other apologies being made for mistakes at other tables.
The food portions are quite large and that's reflected in their prices. I wouldn't say it's overpriced but it's on the high side as far as I'm concerned. The soup was too salty and so was one of our entrees...not unusual these days but also not good....you can always add salt, if needed. All in all, the quality of the food was OK...very average.
We noticed that none on of the patrons looked as if they were on their lunch hour; it's not that kind of place because the wait is very considerable even after being seated. When we left, there were a lot of people waiting to be seated. I hope they weren't in a hurry. I certainly wouldn't recommend this place but I'm glad we gave it a try. I would especially avoid it on weekends; I'll bet the wait is maddening. -

I have to admit, the people can really make the place. I was here with a wonderful group after a great hiking day. We were too busy enjoying each other company to notice that the service was spotty and S-L-O-W.
Don't get me wrong, Awful Annie's is charming, ya know, cutesy. And, there's this monster covered patio that runs the length of the building. And, it's in the heart of historic Auburn, which is charming, ya know, cutesy.
Take your parents here when they're in town for a visit. Do the obligatory stroll after the meal and they'll rave about it to Aunt Becky.
Ah, yes, the food. Great breakfast and good comfort grub. Fresh and delicious. I'll go again and consider some more stars. I saw that my friend (at our same table) Laura G gave the big four. Hmmm.... -

Awful Annie's is my backup place if it's Monday or Tuesday when Katrina's is closed. This place has been around forever and has always been consistently good. Not as good as Katrinas but certainly way better than the other options in Auburn. The food and service here are great and they have outdoor seating with heaters and since there aren't many places in Auburn you can sit outside and enjoy a meal that is just a great addition to the good food and service. Plus the outdoor seating adds to the tables available and can somewhat speed up the wait. It can be very crowded so come early or late and avoid the weekends, and event days, if possible. Crowds mean you will wait for your food so just relax and enjoy that cup of coffee and the beautiful day. If you are impatient or in a hurry go somewhere else.
Parking in Old Town Auburn can be a challenge but there is a large parking lot not to far away. -

We stumbled upon Awful Annie's on the way to Tahoe. Got there just in time to beat the rush. Service was super accommodating (turned of heater, serviced a late comer, modified orders). The food was outstanding. You've never seen such a grilled cheese sandwich in your life.
The salads were huge, fresh and very flavorful.
A bit pricey though
We bought a loaf of the cinnamon bread and enjoyed it all weekend in Tahoe.
A sweet spot for a lunch break, great for all ages, has that grandma's kitchen feel. -

Another one that I am still scratching my head how there isn't 5 stars across the board...
Food here was unbeatable. This and the Eggery (So Cal) are the by far the best bet for breakfast in Cali that I have stumbled across. Waitresses were sweet, hash browns were tastey and my omelette was large and in charge. And they have trivial pursuit (another way for me to show how much smarter I am than my girlfriend) at the table. Be nice to other tables so you can trade cards once you finish yours. -

Maybe this is the place to go for breakfast. Lunch was nothing much. Everything was OK. Bloody Mary was really good. Service was good. If you are a foodie and expecting exceptional you may be disappointed. If you are hungry and looking for decent food and good service you will be perfectly content.

You want the best Bloody Mary ever? Then Awful Annie's is the place to go. Ask fot it extra spicy with 2 olives & a big piece of celery & there you go... Tbe best you can find in Auburn or anywhere so far for me. They make their own mix & sell it there also along with their special breads & more. I love the Monterey Omlet with fruit or a great Benedict. I like being treated right & taken care of quickly and everyone here works together to make your dining perfect. The Bloody Marys bring me here & the food is all good.

After hearing about this place for years I finally made some time to go check it out. I was told the Eggs Beni where the best in town and that was true! I don't care for home fries anywhere so I went with the fresh fruit and that is what really impressed me. Instead of a fruit cut days in advance sitting in a cold bowl like most places it was fresh cut large pieces of fruit nicely displayed on my plate. The staff was great think I had 4 different people check in on me with smiles on their faces. I would go 5 stars for sure but I love great coffee with my breakfast and although theirs is as good as most it didn't blow me away, and a 5 star breakfast place has to offer hash browns for me. For other reviewers I tend to see out of town folks rate Auburn's places lower because they do not understand what kind of place Auburn is. It is a small town with country manners and we don't take to city people coming here and acting like fools. If you got bad service here in Auburn it is probably because you acted poorly yourself. Positive energy no matter where you are will always reflect back on you and the service you receive.

Now first off, let me state that I have worked in a "cafe style" restaurant before and understand that Sundays (breakfast and lunch) are typically the busiest day. Although I do not believe that just because your shift is almost over, and you probably need your own Bloody Mary by now, that you have the right to be stern with customers.
Let me begin,
The Honey and I were getting together with four other friends to do some wine tasting in the Auburn area. We thought it would be a good idea to grab some lunch before the fun begins. Well Katrina's was closed (dammit) so we opted for Awful Annie's. I had never been there before, but went off the raves for the establishment.
The six of us were seated quickly on an outdoor, covered patio and the bus girl was very quick with getting us drinks and telling us the specials. Cue in angry waitress who I would probably not want to meet in a dark alley. I'm not quite sure what the issue was, because she had the worst attitude with us all and really made us feel uncomfortable. Most of the people at our table have worked in the biz before and are not too critical but this lady blew our minds. And to note, we all ordered simple cold sandwiches, soups, and salads... nothing too complicated.
Yet, after waiting for over a half hour for our food, and the waitress coming and telling us they ran out of rolls for our sandwiches, we were pretty fed up and thought about leaving. A huge first for me. It just didn't seem like we were eating in a restaurant, but more like being scolded by our parents and forced to eat what we didn't want as punishment for even walking in to Annie's.
On a good note, the food did make up for the horrible service. Good portions and very fresh ingredients.
I just really hope they do something about the service because I'd love to go back. But if I want to be scolded by an elder, I'll drunk dial my mom and listen to her. -

On a stop on our way up to Reno, looking for some food in Auburn and it seemed like breakfast was the way to go - we wandered the streets, looking at menus until we saw the cool outdoor deck, at Annie's.
And so glad we did. My breakfast was so good, it would be worth driving up again just for breakfast.
Eggs Benedict done absolutely right - enough hollandaise, perfect English muffin, flavorful, ham, eggs cooked so the white was firm, and the yolk runny. We asked for our home fries well done, and they were perfect. Really, crispy, browned with no added extraneous matter ( i.e. onions, green onions, sour cream - forget about it. Just cook the spuds right.!)
My companion, who rarely finishes a meal, ate all of his steak and eggs, so they must have been good. He too was caught by the perfection of the humble potatoes, exquisitely executed.
Our server was lovely, friendly and on top of everything.
Sitting outside on a fall morning, enjoying good compainship and the relaxed small town atmosphere - sublime.
