This place is really good. It looks like a dump from the outside but it's nice and quaint in the inside.

I tried this place for the first time this weekend. I ordered the "Ravioli Florentine al Formaggio" which is Ravioli stuffed with spinach & ricotta cheese in a feta cheese sauce, and my friend ordered the "3 Cheese Calzone" and added Pepperoni. Both were delicious. The Calzone was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Both the bread and cheese were really good.

I loved the green pasta used for the Ravioli... everything from the texture to the sauce was delicious. Oh, and the garlic bread was GREAT too!

The only thing I would say DEFINITELY NEEDS REMODELING are the disgusting bathrooms. Ugh...

Other than that, I'd love to come back here.

Mmmmm, pizza is SO good here!

This place is so cute and welcoming. I've been coming here ever since I was a little girl and fortunately it hasn't changed! The salad is super tasty and they put pepperoni slices in it too. The pizza dough is thick and there is always globs of cheese on it. The perfect pizza in my opinion :)

First and foremost, this review is for their Cannoli only!

Late night cravings for a delicious and homemade Cannoli drew me to Yelp in order to search for a nearby authentic Italian place; based upon fellow Yelper reviews, I was convinced that this was the place to grab a Cannoli.

I was eager to try this pastry of deliciousness, but I didn't open my take-out box until I got home and I discovered that my Cannoli was crowned with chocolate syrup rather than drizzled in dark chocolate, not a big deal right? Wrong. I look for a bitter note of a dark chocolate to cut through the creamy and sweet filling of a Cannoli and since that as missing in favor of a sweet and gooey chocolate, so what that level and depth of flavor.

The shell itself was nothing incredibly special, although it had a good flavor profile. I was a little sad because I think the Cannoli shell was filled and not served immediately or that it was older... it did not taste like a fresh shell. If you're familiar with Cannoli's, you will know exactly what I mean.

As for the cream filling... it was just alright. It was somewhat grainy and not as smooth as I would have liked to see. Flavors, again, were good.

Overall, I think the texture of both the shell and filling, along with the chocolate syrup, were the undoing of this particular Cannoli.

Will I be back? To try the food, of course! I hope to update my review and leave amazing comments with regard to the food rather than the desserts. Will I be enjoying another Cannoli from Avolio's? Nope. I didn't enjoy the first and most definitely will not be trying another.

After combing through more Italian restaurants (Macaroni Grill, Olive Garden etc...)  I had to update my rating on Avolio's.  They are one step better than all of them.  The breading on the mozerella stciks are the best.  They make the BEST spaghetti Carbonara and there garlic bread is up there too.  I've been here 4 times since my first post trying different meals but to lazy to post my updates.  Everything falls between a 4 and a 5,stars but more 5's.  Avolios is officially the best overall Italian restaurant.  My advice is they need to run some appetizer/entree/desert combo specials like the other big chain restaurants.  The place tops them all

Good reviews on Yelp and high recommendation from coworker that knows the family that owns this joint!  High hopes...

    dashed.

And I got their yelp signature dish too, baked mostaciolli (although now I see that that honor has been given to the meat lasagna)

The dish was disappointing.  Boring really.  And I don't throw that word around lightly.  But that dish was it.  Not simple, boring.  It tasted like the sauce was literally from a jar.  I was expecting so much more.

    Garlic bread?  Forgettable.  Pizza?  Doughy.

Am I just too critical, or did this place sneak under the radar, passing itself off as good?

Was craving Italian food (not Olive Garden) on a sunday afternoon and yelped this place.

Parking: the restaurant has sufficient parking (no parking toward the front due to large amount of customers, but plenty on the side rear).

Food: Excellent, I had the Chicken Parmigiana which was juicy. So juicy that  when I cut the chicken, juice squirted out. LOL. So tasty and served in a large quantity (3 medium flanks of chicken) with spaghetti on the side.

excentlent cheese ravioli served with a generous amount and tasty garlic bread.

Ambience: clean, with nice decor and lighting (not cluttered) with friendly service.

Price: $10 a plate is average compared to $15 dollars you would spend at the Olive Garden.

Service: Acknowledged by staff and seated quickly

overall, good food, nice ambience with friendly service. A 4 1/2 rating (Yelp needs to provide 1/2 on ratings) will be back to try the pizza.

Authentic Italian food. Hearty, meaty, and cheesy.

I'm biased towards Avolio's. I grew up eating their pizza for our school's hot lunch program. I enjoyed it so much as a kid.

Nowadays, I'm still a fan. The meat sauces taste full. Definitely not bland or watery. I hate when sauces are like that. Avolio's does a good job in that regard.

Likewise, with the pasta and cheeses. They also feel full and not flat or limp.

The garlic bread and calamari are ok.

I liked the mostaciolli and, especially, the lasagna.

Avolio's is the yin to El Appetiz's yang. Both are excellent, but for different reasons. Avolio's is heavy flavor and El Appetiz feels lighter. Don't know why it feels that way to me. I recommend both places, but if you want a MEAL, I'd recommend Avolio's.

There are better places to get Italian.. even a chain like Olive Garden.

Came here a couple nights ago with my girlfriend after seeing the glowing reviews here. We shared a caprese salad and a veal parmeseana. The caprese salad was alright, but the tomato slices were way too big and the cheese was a little dry. Prosciutto is always good. The veal parmeseana was also alright, but not enough flavor. I think the cooks here either ran out of garlic, or they're afraid to use it. Everything was just starving for flavor. The best thing we ate that night was, honestly, the garlic bread. NOT because it's the best garlic bread in the world, VERY far from it, it's just the only thing that had an ounce of flavor.

At this point I'd give them 3 stars, but they had two glaring issues:

Upon entering the restaurant, it smelled like a public restroom. A *clean* restroom, mind you, because I'm not saying it smelled like turd, it just smelled like the same odor concealer that you find in public restrooms. Half of taste is SMELL guys! This is probably why we had so much trouble tasting anything.

Second problem, the service was terrible. The waiter checked on us twice the entire night; once immediately after we dug into our entree, then again to deliver the check. I never got a refill on my water or soda. He even didn't have the time, or state of mind, to PICK UP the check! We had to bring it to him; upon doing so we could clearly see the staff was too busy watching television in the lobby. Unforgivable mistakes. Patrons absolutely do not like to be held hostage at a restaurant.

Sincerely disappointed. I was hoping to find an awesome Italian restaurant close to home that wasn't a chain.

[Edit] And it seems they have classy clientele! I've never received hate mail in my life until I posted this review. :D

    Lunch special $5.99.

That's pretty much all you need to know from the generous variety of items Avolio's offers. The list ranges from several dishes of pasta to sandwich, salad and soup combos. Not bad for $6.

I had the half meatball sandwich and Caesar salad combo. The salad is generous within itself, and the sandwich I could've sworn was a whole one (the boy had ordered a regular 8 inch sausage sandwich and they looked about the same size) The bread on the sandwich was so soft and dangerously addicting. It paired well with the sweet tomato sauce, and the so very tasty meatballs. I believe it was about three half slices of meatball in the half a sandwich. I actually can't imagine eating a whole sandwich myself, as I was having some major difficulty in finishing my half. For $6 I walked out of there more than satisfied with a food coma that felt like it could last me days.

This place is really good and authentic when it comes to Italian food. Their pizza is really good and cool cause they put the pepperoni under the cheese. I've had the home made meat lasagna and it was delicious and fulling. I've also had their chicken parmigiana before and that too was rally good. Big portions and the garlic bread was bomb. The service was really attentive and nice.

The owner has no problem privately messaging you if he doesn't like your review so if you don't want to get crap you may want to shut the let owners message you reply off.

    Sometimes Yelp just fails me

This is a time where it tripped me, kicked the crap out of me, and stole my wallet.

This place is a behind a strip mall in Covina.

They charge you prices for a nice sit down Italian place while their restaurant looks like the last time anything was replaced was the 70s (where the booths would still be a horrible color)

The family was like really? You really want us to try this place? When we walked in.

Oh It has a few good Yelp reviews its nice to try new things! (I still get mocked for that)

Our waitress took forever to do anything.

Between chatting forever with a group of her friends and doing who the else knows what else (there weren't many people) we were dying.

In fact we would have left but it was getting late at that point and we were really hungry.

At this point we are looking at the decor.

Now don't get me wrong I love a good dive but we are talking ripped seat cushions...outdated decor in a beige box of a room.

That and the fact they are charging like they are a nice sit down Italian place.

    So we all get calzones

The opinion around the table lots of bland cheese and it was a eh on the yelp scale.

    No one finished their food.

After going to the front to get someone to deal with us wanting to leave this place and getting the leftovers packed I thought it was the end of it.

Until I spent most of my night in the bathroom (I wont go into details but it was a long night)

The leftovers were thrown out in the morning.

I wouldn't come back here if you paid me.

This is the place I go to with my boyfriend when we have some extra cash.
From the look of the outside you wouldn't think much but the inside is completely different. Going into Avolio's is like going to someone's house. There are family pictures up and pictures of Italy. The service is always nice. The atmosphere when you sit down is relaxed and the candles on the table are a nice touch.
The food is delicious and in good portions! I've had the vegetable lasagnea before and the half and half plate which was half spaghetti and half ravioli. Everytime I go I can taste the freshness of the food. My boyfriend got the calzone and enjoyed it (and he's picky!)
I'm always too full to get dessert but I plan on trying it one day and trying the pizza!

A bunch of us came here after class to celebrate a friend's birthday. It was quiet; not too unusual for a Wednesday evening. It's a cozy hole in the wall with dim lighting and awesome food.

Bruschetta - a bit on the salty side but DELICIOUS. All of the topping ingredients were fresh and ripe, and the cheese.. omg the cheese!! It was so fluffy and tasty~ Definitely getting this next time.

Pollo piccata - the lemon flavor is strong in this one, but definitely a great dish. I've never seen an entree come with a side of spaghetti haha XD But the pasta balanced out the strong tang of the chicken.

Tortellini w/ pink sauce - AMAAAAZING~~ The pasta was really dense and the sauce was delicious!

Cannoli - I've only had cannoli once before so I don't think I have enough experience with it to give qualified commentary, but it was tasty enough~ The condensed milk flavor of the cream filling was really prominent, and the shell was very crunchy.

Spumoni ice cream - call me uncultured but I couldn't figure out the flavor or identify a single ingredient in this except the pieces of maraschino cherries. But it was unexpectedly good! It didn't feel heavy like gelato and the flavor wasn't overwhelming, so I really liked it.

The only con to this visit was that the food took a long time to come out; felt like 25-30 minutes of waiting. So with that in mind, don't come here already starving.

TL;DR: Delicious, very filling, reasonable prices, don't come starving.

Personally I would give this place 4 stars, but taking my husband's opinions into consideration averaged it to 3.

We had their lunch special and cannoli as dessert.
My angel hair pasta with meatball was pretty good, I LOVED the meatball, it was love at first bite: tender and full of flavors. I also loved their cappuccino, I think it was better than *bucks.

My husband's fettuccini alfredo with chicken, on the other hand, was just ok. I have had better.

At last, the cannoli, or I should say cannolo, was too sweet for my taste. My husband said that it didn't seem like homemade.

Overall I think the lunch special is a good deal, good portion and well priced. Service is very attentive.

I just came back from a lunch at Avolio's. The meatball sandwich is so good--warm, toasty bread filled with tasty, tender meatballs and topped with just enough melted mozzarella--and served with chips and a side salad, it made the perfect meal.

My coworkers had the Half and Half (ravioli and spaghetti) and the Rigattoni alla Jennifer. Both looked good and came with a hearty serving of garlic bread.

We ended our time with the Cannoli (they ran out of Ecstasy Chocolate Cake) and Spumoni (which turned out to be a spumoni ice cream pie!), and we all agreed we would come back for that elusive Chocolate Cake.

Despite lukewarm recommendations from people at work, I finally decided to give this place a try, just so that I could have my own opinion about the place.  First off, it doesn't appear that they have lunch menu prices, so at first glance, the prices of the menu items were rather high.

Not knowing what to expect in terms of service, I went the safe route and ordered a veal parmesan sandwich, thinking that it would be relatively quick to prepare, compared to the regular entrees.  Plus, I didn't want to spend the extra $3-$4 to get one of cheaper entrees, just to be disappointed with the investment.  The sandwich was okay, perhaps a little dry, and served with a SMALL bag of chips.  For a sandwich, it took a bit of time, so I had to rush to eat my sandwich in order to get back to work on time.  I'm not a big fan of eating in a hurry.

Anyways, the menu is expensive enough to keep me from being a regular lunch customer, but it might not be bad for a special occasion every now and then.

I've been going here with my best friend and his wife for ages, or it seems. My best friend knows the owner from his church. So, not because I know the owner but here is my review on the food.

The pizza is excellent. The Avolio special is loaded with everything. It's chunky, piled high topped with cheese that's been melted on top and then browned a little. Always a treat when we have the pizza.

Was here also last night for my best friend's birthday and his wife's  birthday. I ordered the veal parmigiana this time. This was excellent. Breaded but cooked a little too much I think where it's on the tough side. The spaghetti was really good. I was soo full, I had a hard time driving. My best friend's mother also made a carrot cake she brought and his wife's sister made a tres leche cake. I was still full when I got home a few hours after this feast.

Go and try the pizza. You won't regret it.

I love pizza, and I'm one of those that thinks there is no such thing as "bad" pizza.

But if I had to pick the BEST the ABSOLUTELY BEST it would be Avolio's (granted I haven't had Pizza in Chicago or New York), but it's delicious.  The sauce and the cheese have a different and special flavor that's just takes it over the top!

And I've never been one to notice the flavor of the sauce on a pizza, but I gotta say I had a lasting impression. . .

My family and I have been going to Avolio's for well over ten years now, they are my personal favorite Italian restaurant.

To put it simply, the food is beyond delicious, it is wonderful.  Their pizza is flavorful, thick, filling, and above any other pizza that you will find somewhere else.  The pasta is creamy and delicious but I cannot order it every time I go because it is SO good but I can never finish it all, their portions are huge!!  The one item that I do get 90% of the time when I go is their turkey sub sandwich.  I know, a sub sandwich at an Italian restaurant?  TRUST ME, it is divine.  All of their sub sandwiches are amazing, but this one is just GOOD.  I have been going to Avolio's so much that every time I eat one of these it is like eating home-cooking from my mom, it is a comfort food for me.  The salad with Italian (of course) dressing takes the cake and I could easily walk in there and eat nothing but salad.  it is that good.

If you ever want to have some great Italian food, give Avolio's a try, you will not be sorry.  The ambiance is quiet yet cozy and the staff are all so friendly and helpful.

This place is excellent. Yes, it is in a crummy location and its not fancy inside, but that does not mean anything. I've been to this place for dine-in and take out at least 20 times and I have never been disappointed.

First off, their pizza is superb. Homemade marinara sauce and crust, a ton of cheese, and really quality toppings. I also like how they put the toppings beneath the cheese. The pizza is almost better reheated the next day, so get enough for leftovers.

Secondly, I need to mention their chicken parm sandwich. That delicious sauce with homemade bread, cheese and crispy, tender chicken all bundled together. Simply delicious.

Lastly, their pasta dishes are authentic and homemade. They make their own pasta for the spaghetti and lasagna. I've never been disappointed with any of the pasta dishes I've had. The garlic bread is also very tasty.

We stopped here thanks to reviews on Yelp Mobile. When we arrived at the address, we were, uh, shocked. The building looks like its an old 7-Eleven or maybe a Kinney's Shoes that has been retrofitted, it's windows covered up and the building painted a plain white to enclose the place. Walking in didn't allay our fears that we'd found the wrong place: The place was dark, the furniture old, and the two dining areas looked as if they'd seen better days.

But the bread ... oh, the bread -- simply outstanding. The waitress, who might have been an owner/manager, told us all the doughs (for pizza and bread) are freshly made, and they tasted as such. My calzone was very good, highlighted by a terrific outer crust; the fettucine we ordered was overdone, but its meat sauce was tasty. We also ordered a salad (as someone mentioned here) - just ok.

So, it's not the greatest sit-down experience you'll ever have. But the food was pretty good - it's probably really a three-star experience.

To be "Yelp" fair, considering who might be reading this review in the future, I'm going to bump it to a four-star rating based on its pizza and bread. Here's the caveat: Avolio's seems as if it's a terrific take-out restaurant,  and would be well worth a 10 min. drive to pick up a to-go order.

Catered here for my house warming parties twice..

delivery is always on time with fresh and hot dishes.

Their food is good quality and not too expensive. You can also conveniently order online.  GOod place to order togo or cater from!

I am not a big fan of Italian food, but it was my cousin's turn to pick the place. It is a small family owned restaurant, and the staff was pretty nice.  My cousin loves this place and is a big fan of the baked Mostaccioli. Even though everyone on yelp talked about their pizza, I wasn't too hungry. I ended up getting a small antipasto salad (which is what I am basing my rating off of). The salad was large, but it was way too salty. My sister also had the Cesar salad and she said it was "just ok".
Next time I'll be sure to take the advice of the yelp-ers and try the pizza or pasta =)

Pizza Pizza Pizza any kind of Pizza here is the bomb... Hot and yummy.

The Calzone is pretty darn good too and big my hubby and I could not finish ours it was so big.

The service is not good though.  4 times in a row we got a very young waitress who never fills our drinks or gives us our checks or even checks on us.  It's bad when you have to go up to the front and ask for a refill and 3 other people at the same table has to do it too...

It takes a long time to get you food because its fresh so don't come here if your in a rush.

I had the pizza today, it was really good.  Another reason to love this place is how the family serves free thanksgiving meals every year at their restaurant.

This was my first time here. The lunch specials at 5.99 are good.  I had the spaghetti and meatball. I have to say I have had better. But I will go back soon to try something else. I really liked the atmosphere and the prices. Staff was very friendly. Must try the garlic bread, it was awesome.

My girlfriend and I often get cravings for Italian food, and I in particular enjoy trying "authentic" hole in the wall places (or family owned).  We heard that this place was nearby and had a good review, but after eating here we were very disappointed.

I tried the Veal Parmigiana and it tasted okay (but I was very hungry after working out).  The pasta was overcooked and mushy and the pasta sauce tasted like it was just dumped out from a tomato paste can.  The veal was breaded very sloppily; as you cut into it, one side was just bread and cheese and the other side was just meat.

I also ate a third of the clam pasta that my girlfriend ordered.   She has been looking for a decent clam pasta for quite sometime now.   The pasta again was too soggy and the sauce was very bland.

The overall atmosphere is also not very pleasant.  The rooms echo very easily and it did not help when the table next to us had a large family gathering and did not quiet their children when they were screaming over and over.

Service is also lacking.  They definitely need more employees because there were just two that were hostesses/cashiers/waitress.  It was pretty ridiculous that we had to wait over 15 minutes to receive a bill, and we never were able to get a refill on our drinks.  After a while, we just wanted to leave in a hurry.

We were really hoping to find a cozy Italian place, but found the quality of the food less than average.  I actually think the food is overpriced for the location and quality of food.  I hate to admit it, but I think I would rather go to a crappy chain store than come back here again.

Ate here Friday night.  Had the Avolios pizza, small salad, and garlic bread.  The garlic bread was great due to the freshness of the bread.  The pizza was very very good.  The ingredients were fresh fresh fresh. I've been eating here since 1997.  Avolios has been thru some changes. They were great (best pizza), went down hill, now have improved.  They re-decorated inside and out and added new items to the menu.  The best is that they have improved the quality of their food.  The place was full on a friday night.  It's so nice to find a restaurant that "gets it". A great neighborhood italian restaurant with good food done right.
