On the suggestion of a friend my honey and I tried this place while out riding the other day.
I was a little hesitant but am glad to have given it a shot.
We had such fun with the staff...they had gr8 suggestions and we were able to try a few things we wouldn't have ordinarily.
I can't always tell which meals will be too spiced and which ones won't...so they steered me just right.
My honey had a friend ice cream that stayed creamy yummy yet crispy outside...YUM

    Avocado Fries... a must try!

Our friends from Oaxaca have had us over almost weekly for authentic Mexican food over the course of the last few years, so I am no stranger to excellent Mexican food.  Having said that, I keep an open mind when eating at a Mexican restaurant (different regions in a country would prepare dishes differently, etc.) but I am also a but critical of restaurant food in general.

We went on a whim mid-afternoon on a Saturday, so we pretty much had the pace to ourselves.

The chips and salsa we delightful.  The chips were freshly made and the salsa was mild and had a nice flavor.  We had the Avocado Fries as an appetizer, which we loved with the honey diping sauce.  It is definitely worth a trip just to try these.

For beverages we had lemonade, pretty typical and was fine, and  the Tamarind Water, which was very tasty.  I would have liked water brought to the table with the flatware.

For my entree, I had Flautas de Papa, which was surprisingly yummy.  I was a little hesitant to order it at first, thinking it was an odd combination, but I was so delighted with it, I finished my entire plate (I almost never finish all my food).  Hubby had the cheese Enchiladas with tomatillo sauce.  It was OK, but I am not a huge fan of tomatillo sauce in general, so no points off for it since hubby enjoyed it.

For dessert hubby had Triple Cream, which had a nice flavor but is too mushy for me (cake in 3 kinds of milk).  Again, no points off for this since it is personal preference and hubby liked it.  I had the plain churros, which were just as expected.  Hubby also had Cafe con Leche (sweetened coffee and milk) and it was yummy and served in a large mug (we're big coffee drinkers, preferring higher quality coffee).

We also got grilled chicken for our puppy, and they were very accommodating and it was a reasonably priced.

The server was welcoming, friendly, and attentive.

Their website isn't updated regularly.  It has Superbowl and Valentines info on the home page and today is March 31.  But they seem to keep their FB page updated.

The Yelp directions and Google directions are both off, putting the restaurant in the middle of the circle in downtown Cornwall, instead of on 9W.  Not the restaurant's fault, just mentioning it.

You should really go check out Avocado Restaurant.

We ate here for lunch today and were so pleasantly surprised by many tings. First of all the decor: I knew this place from when it used to be the Leprechaun Inn (that's a story for a different day, kids). And while they kept the bar, which looks fun and inviting, they redid the large dining room, making it clean, bright and colorful. Well done.

Service was also something we noticed right away. Kristopher was very professional and welcoming, answering our questions about dishes and making sure we always had whatever we needed. He also made our guacamole at our table (an option which you should try) and made it with just the right amount of jalapeno for our tastes. Nice.

But it's all about the food, and I must say that the menu is huge and that they honestly have something for everybody, including less-than-adventurous eaters. I had a slow cooked pork which was delicious, a house specialty. My wife had the chicken mole which was also very nice, and mom had something off the lunch combo menu: chicken sope and and another taco dish (I forgot). All were very fresh, not dominated by huge piles of beans and rice, but were just right. Large portions to be sure, but not ridiculous.

I understand that this is a family affair and I feel that the owners have really put a lot of thought and care into bringing authentic Mexican dishes to Cornwall. If you are looking to get out of your food rut, please try going to Avocado. It's a great change from the same old thing. And the menu is so large, you can go back many times and try different things.

Note to the chefs: we did feel that several dishes could benefit from cutting back on the sweetness. Maybe it's just what we got, but that's our one bit of constructive criticism.

ok, I have no idea why this place has such high ratings... at best, I'd say mediocre.
chips nand salsa were good, we ordered water to drink and it took forever to arrive. We had these avocado fries that are SUPPOSED to be amazing... and they were gross. They had hardly any flavor at all to them, so all you tasted was the dip.
For dinner I ordered the Enchiladas Suizas -- this has become my favorite thing to eat at Mexican Restaurants, they are chicken enchiladas with green sauce and sour cream. But here, they were awful... the chicken wasn't very tender, the tomatillo sauce was incredibly lacking, they weren't spicy at all so the sour cream was a waste. The rice tasted like Uncle Ben's rice, instead of spanish rice, and the beans had no flavor.
my husband had some pork dish, that he said was "OK" but not the best he's ever eaten, by far.
our waters were only refilled once, and we hardly ever saw our server (and the restaurant was not busy, we were one of 3 tables the whole time we were there)
Needless to say, we did NOT get dessert! and we won't be coming back. There are far better Mexican Restaurants in the area.

When people say New York has bad Mexican food it is because of places like Avocado. Everything about this experience was miserable.

Like a fast food restaurant, Avocado serves food prepared from a can. The salsa tasted strangely like Newmans Own brand salsa. The rice was definitely out of a box. The refried beans had a flavor that can only be achieved by serving from a can. The cheese was devoid of flavor and in little perfect sizes only achieved by a machine and best served from a bag. It's like they get their ingredients from a gas station.

I thought that since this restaurant touts itself as 'Avocado' that their signature guacamole dish would be superb. I was glad to see that they make it at your table. Over $8 for guacamole, I expected something great. Instead we got one avocado, a tablespoon a pico de gallo (store bought I think), and a quarter of lemon. Obviously it was bland and we were better off going to the Stop and Shop down the road and buying their week old guacamole in a plastic container.

Many people in this area have not had Mexican food. They don't really have many opportunities here and this place might be for many their first experience with Mexican food. Perhaps they are thinking of visiting Mexico and want to see what the food will be like. After eating food like this I bet they will not want to visit Mexico for it's bland food and poor service.

They should be ashamed to serve food like this. It's an insult to Mexico and the wonderful food and people from there.

    It's not that bad.

That being said, my expectations upon seeing the exterior weren't that high. Avocado is located on a desolate stretch of route 9W next to some pretty seedy looking motels. If it weren't painted bright lime green, you'd probably miss it. The interior is a surprising contrast. It's warm and inviting and our server was very pleasant and attentive. The food though was only so-so. Using a http://restaurant.com gift certificate (bought when it was 80% - score!) we went all out getting the...
    - Mini Steak Sope appetizer (soft steak tacos-ish) $6.95
    - Costillitas (Mexican-style spare ribs with cumin fries) $14.95
    - Paella Valancia (mixed seafood/chicken and saffron rice) $16.95
    - Tres Leches (moist cake dessert) $4.95
    - Chocolate fried ice cream ($4.25).
The appetizer was delicious, the Costillitas had a kind of B.O.-ey quality to it (kind of like how Burger King burgers smell like Body Odor - but are still tasty), the chicken/seafood in the paella was good - the rice was a little salty (and I doubt they used actual saffron), and the tres leche was nothing to write home about. Also, the corn flake coating in the chocolate fried ice cream made the whole dish rubbery. Their tamarind margarita was kind of mind blowing so I'm going to rationalize the three stars by saying the food wasn't that bad and you can get an amazing deal on gift certificates for Avocado on http://restaurant.com.

    Oh, and cumin fries!!! Ingenious!!!

I ate here for the first time tonight, I has a http://restaurant.com gift certificate. We didn't order an appetizer, but the complimentary chips and salsa were fine, the salsa was mild, so we liked that. I ordered the chicken enchiladas suizas, they were quite tasty and I am pretty sure made to order. My husband had the chicken fajitas, and even though he is pretty picky when it comes to Mexican food, he really enjoyed it. We had a half pitcher of white sangria and enjoyed it while we sat outside on the back patio, which didn't have a great view or anything, but it was still enjoyable. Wait staff was courteous and friendly. We will go back again.

I've been to Avocado a few times now and its always great!  It's hard to choose what to get, the menu is huge and actually has an extra page that's not on the website with burritos (which are HUGE by the way...my dad is a big guy and only ate half of his).  The service is quick and they seem to really care about your food.  The only drink I've had there is the white peach sangria, which is delicious.   A few things I would recommend are the guacamole, salmon playero(good if you want something a little healthier/not smothered in cheese), chile relleno(they have a whole page of vegetarian dishes but this ones the best!) and the flan for dessert, it's so good!  I usually don't even like flan but Avocado's is much denser than most, not slimy.  The only thing I wouldn't recommend are the churros, they seemed a little too fried or something because they were super crunchy.  By the way, on Thursday's they have a special where kids 11 and under eat free!

my only reaction to this experience is that these people have some nerve. this was not mexican food and it was not in any way homemade.

i ordered the featured chile relleno, which my server assured me was excellent. it was a soppy, tasteless mass covered in jar italian spaghetti sauce, served with canned beans and very very salty boxed rice.

i have not been this disappointed in a long time.
