Review from Anisha Y.
I love the huge mural on the wall. The interior is decorated very nicely and the cafe is very spacious. It just had a real chill vibe to it.
They have an assortment of chocolate goodies and I had one of the best brownies I had ever had in my life. Pricy but it's worth it.
I'm going to have to come back here and try the drinks next time. -

I love Avoca.
It's rarely ever so full that you can't find a seat and the staff is always nice and knowledgeable without coming across as coffee snobbish.
Awesome vibe and big windows let in lots of light during the day. Lots of places to sit and lots of places to plug a laptop in.
I'm not much of a coffee person, but everything I've had is good Cappuccino, Iced Tea, Regular Coffee.. they do roast their beans there and it smells amazing -

It's a few minutes away from the cluster of museums on University and Lancaster so if you're heading out towards that direction, head on over to Avoca for a super delicious latte and a fresh strawberry muffin or instead, try a slice of their coconut lime cake. My latte was smooth, the espresso roast reminiscent of the coffee beans of Cuvee from Austin, TX. The baristas have awesome beards, there are plenty of places to sit inside but since it's a college hotspot, you may have to take it outside. It's moderately loud when it's a full house and the retro 90's and alternative rock music is blaring in the background. Still, I was able to sip on my coffee and read a book so it wasn't too bad. I love that if you're drinking there, your beverage is served in a mug or glass. Go green.
Would recommend this place to any coffee lover.
p.s. They also serve chocolate from Dude, Sweet Chocolate of Oak Cliff. SWEET.Listed in: No More Starbucks!

Hmm, kinda torn on this review...
A.) I love that FW has another cool independent coffee shop (they are rare there!)
B.) Some of the staff and one of the owners (I recognized him from their website) were looking at me uber stink-eye/snooty and weren't too friendly when I came in to take a look at the menu and ask some questions
C.) It's in a good location, right across the street from Spiral Diner
D.) The hot mocha I ordered was a little too thick and "chewier" than expected... But not necessarily bad...
E.) They roast their own coffee there! That's cool.
F.) They close early on Sundays (5pm) which kinda sucks in my book. I drove over there at like 5:05 and was mega sad hah.
G.) The interior is nice and clean feeling. You can tell the place used to be a mechanic's garage.
So, all things considered I'd say they deserve at best a 3.5, but the hardcore bad vibes for no reason I got from them on my first visit makes me have to round down. -
Review from Angela L.
Love: good coffee, plugs for your laptop, cool artwork for sale, and the "Dude, Sweet" chocolates for sale.
Do not love: condescending cashier telling me my coffee doesn't *need* creamer. My coffee and I have a relationship. I decide what my coffee needs. I know what's best for it.
This place is convenient, and I like the idea of it. But each time I go in, I feel like it's too cool for me. And I'm pretty cool. What's with that? -

Went to Avoca again, and the guy with giant drealocks was super nice and down to earth! I'm starting to rethink my opinions about the customer service here. When you have consecutive good customer service experiences, ya gotta rethink that....

Oklahoma City, OK
Sweet. A solid coffee shop in the Fort Worth area with good coffee, friendly staff, and plenty of power outlets and tables for laptops. I love the natural lighting from the huge garage door windows. Thanks for keeping me from having to drive to Dallas for coffee shop while visiting family in the Ft. Worth area.
Oh, and thanks too for not making me feel like an idiot because I didn't know what a Cortada was. Thanks for the helping me to try something different. And by the way, the blueberry scone was good enough to be almost entirely eaten before I sat down. -
Review from Kevin N.
"Wait," she said. I turned.
"Is it not ready?"
"You should try it."
"Oh, okay."
And with that I took a long drag of the vanilla Italian soda with cream that the barista spun me here: see, when it comes to unleaded beverages, I'm apparently basically five years old, and inevitably I end up ordering these saccharine concoctions to kill time when other more discerning tastes are taking in the latest creative incarnate of the brown bean. If you've spent any time with me in a coffee shop, you've likely heard me tell you that I once tried to imagine how many Italian sodas were too many, and the answer, turns out, is about five. Sodas. That's an almost Will Ferrell in Elf serving of syrup, so I don't do them too often since.
But that also means they're a special treat when they happen.
And it's also worth sharing that technically speaking, Italian sodas aren't on the menu board here - in fact, they just carry the vanilla when I asked, but nevertheless they drummed me one up like they get these kind of weirdo requests all the time, because, as one barista noted regarding the other, "she's a genius."
And while I can't necessarily account for an on-the-spot Italian soda being the equivalent of Einstein's theory, I do know that they're easygoing, affable and eager to take the extra step to accommodate the occasional odd random take that walks in the door. Parking is limited, so be aware of that, but there are plenty of coffee shops that could glean a thing or two about the simple act of making folks happy. You can't always do it, but there's you can get most of the way there through 'want to.' I'll be back.Listed in: Ft. Worth: Magnolia, Ft. Worth: Coffee

Review from Ryan F.
I totally respect a business' choices and decisions for how they operate, but I don't appreciate being made to feel like I'm doing something wrong or putting them in a position that the are doing me some kind of favor... This was unfortunately my experience last week when stopping by to meet with Yelp's FTW representative, Kevin.
I stopped in with about 15 minutes to spare before having to be at work, which means that I really only had a couple minutes to ask some questions and be on my way. I was hoping to get an espresso doppio to go and a piece of albatross fudge as a pick me up (a tiramisu if you will) before work. I was told that "they can't make it to go, and that its way better if I have it there anyway." Looking at the pile of to-go cups to my right drew up confusion. When I expressed that I was really unable to have it at the store, the offer was then made that if I really, really needed it to-go, that they could do that but they aren't supposed to do that. That just put a bad taste in my mouth that maybe the customer isn't right, or that maybe I missed that sign somewhere, or that they were having to do me a favor but making me feel guilty about it.
With those thoughts, I just felt unwelcome and went without anything, and even forewent meeting up with Kevin per his email invite, left and went to work. There's a Starbuck's down the hall, so they got my business that day. I might try Avoca again in the future because I really like Dude, Sweet Chocolate in their location and the seemed to have some cool offerings, but it wasn't the best first impression... -

This place is very nice. The baked goods. The chocolate. Beans roasted on site. Super comfortable.
The barista was overwhelmed and my cortado was actually a bit nasty. I'll keep going back. Might have been an off day. The fact that they have a cortado on the menu says something, but they might need to provide some training. If I'm ordering an espresso drink at a premium price, perfection is expected! Or appreciated, anyway... -

Our fav local coffee spot that roast their own beans onsite & the taste is incredible.
Mikes fav is the decaf vanilla cappuccino and I'm crazy for the earl grey lavender tea - this is a place for savoring -

Pour-over is one of my favorite beverages. Unfortunately, Texas is a bit behind the loop on the latest caffeine trends. We just stick to planting Starbucks and the like around business hubs and hope that people will flock. They do. And it sucks for those that would like a more hand-crafted, non-standardized caffeinated beverage.
Avoca sits on the "gourmet" strip of old school Magnolia, and it is producing some quality buzz dranks. The atmosphere is very open and inviting, and there is even some trailer grub outside--talk about becoming hip fast! Inside, there are locally baked baked goods.
The drink menu is standard, but I saw pour-over and knew that I was sold. My friend and I went with the Guatamalan and Peruvian blends. Good? You betcha. A bit light on the flavor profiles, but tasty nonetheless.
Of course, you will always go to Rosebud or Paris if you are lookin' for a greasy spoon and a "cup of joe". I am in no way knocking that style of a morning ritual; heck, I love black from an automatic brewer to go with my eggs and bacon. I am just saying that Avoca gives you a change in that it is a more sophisticated coffee experience.
Lastly, they roast on their own. Fort Worth? Sure doesn't seem like it. Avoca is making it Cowtown AND Cofftown -

Really comfortable and inviting coffee shop. Come in with a laid-back attitude and expect your beverage to be prepared with pride (time). I had a wonderful blueberry muffin and a black coffee... both were on par with the best I've ever had.

After spending 2 years in San Francisco raising my coffee standards to levels of unmitigated snobbery, I returned with great regrets to the coffee purgatory that is DFW. I'm relieved to report that Avoca's local roasting operation is impressive and provides a legitimate option for buying fresh, high quality beans. The glass jar with blue tape packaging is unique and practical.
As for the shop itself, they've got all the hardware bona fides, La Marzocco espresso machines, Mazzer grinders, and the like. The barista on my visit wasn't exactly the hipster coffee disciple stereotype you'd see in SF, but most folks around here might not care for that part of the scene anyway.
If you live west of DFW airport and need some beans, hit up Avoca and buy a jar. -

A coffee lover will be happy here. The traditional drinks are all available and thankfully the owners and staff seem to take pride in knowing their stuff. The on-site roast ensures unique, qualify flavors. Some locally procured snack options round out the thoughtful offerings. Also, this is one of the parking spaces for some of the best food trucks in town.
A note to busy coffee drinkers, these cats take their time with their craft, so I usually find myself going elsewhere for my brew when on-the-go. If you have a moment to relax, then this is the ideal place. -

Overall, I'm a fan. I liked this place enough to go back, and I'll probably frequent it a lot since I live in the area.
However, there are some things I didn't like. I'll start there... It was kind of uncomfortable ordering from a menu that didn't have prices. I know that good coffee is worth every dime, and I'm a big supporter of organic non-commodity coffees. So, it's not like I expect it to be cheap. I just like to know if I'm ordering a $7 specialty drink or a $4 one. That kind of thing matters when you're on a budget. In the meantime, I'll probably just be safe and keep ordering hot, black coffee. That only cost me $2.71 after tax last time I went -- a price I can happily afford.
On the upside (the stuff I love about the place) -- the staff is really friendly. I've been in there three times with different people and felt that way. Also, they didn't rush me out one day when I went in to work on a paper for class. In fact, someone offered to get me a glass of water if I wanted (rather than ask me if I wanted to another cup of coffee). I also like the space. It's really open and relaxed.
Annnnnd they had bike racks. That's pretty important to me, since I recently moved from Lubbock where bike racks didn't exist at local businesses.
Plus (and this is so cool) they use compost-able coffee cups for to-go hot coffee and cups made out of corn plastic for cold drinks! -

I've seen some negative reviews about this place, but I haven't experienced the same negative things so far (which, granted, has been only 2 visits).
After a month in Fort Worth, and having tried 5 different coffee places, I've come to rest here at Avoca.
Yesterday, when I ordered a macchiato, the barista wasn't sure if I knew what I was ordering but he went about it in a courteous way - "just so you know, we make macchiatos in the traditional way, espresso over foam in this tiny cup, if that's ok." LOL - I did know, but this was very adorable, and very sensitive to the different knowledge levels of customers.
I'm back again today - the baristas are pretty short on words, but polite and smiling, and they obviously take pride in what they are doing. What more could you want? Avoca, I raise my macchiato to you! -

I really tried to like this coffee house. I've come back several times to see if it's any good, but I just can't support it anymore. Every time I come here, I kind of feel uncomfortable. I am not really sure if I should be busting my own table or what the prices are for anything. All this adds to my discomfort. The vibe the staff gives out just adds to the discomfort and I don't feel welcomed here.
It's sad that this place isn't better run or organized because it has great potential. -

Finding this place is like getting a new crush: lots of wonderful endorphins tempered with a vague fear of defects yet to be revealed. Avoca, don't hurt me, 'cause this could be wuv.
I've lived in Austin for the past three years, so moving to Fort Worth was bittersweet: yes, I'd be getting beautiful, beautiful money from my new job, but I'd lose Austin's wonderful collection of coffee shops and cheap, hipstery hangouts.
Well, fear not, fellow exiles, for this place keeps most the best of those while eschewing their pretentiousness. True, it isn't open 24 hours like glorious Bennu, and there isn't anything like the food range of Austin Java, but Avoca's virtues are readily apparent.
The coffee (which tastes great) is roasted in house. The music is eclectic without being tragically hip/so-obscure-it-hurts-in-places-you've-probably- haven't-heard-of, set at a volume high enough to to audible without drowning out your conversation or caffeine/adderall-addled studying. There are plenty of power outlets and places to sit, including a couple of comfortable easy chairs and sofas. The place is almost spotlessly clean, yet avoids the cold-hearted sterility of the average Starbucks. High ceilings, tasteful light fixtures and other decor make for a great aesthetic, and (wonder of wonders) the place is insulated enough to keep out the summer heat.
There's a lot out front and what appears to be plenty of street parking. Cup of black coffee (aside: stop ruining coffee with sugar and cream, you babies) and a cookie cost me about four bucks.
I have only two real complaints: 1) that it isn't open later, especially on Sunday, when the place closes down at five; and 2) there are not more people here! Support local businesses keep austinweirdetcetc.
Seriously: try it out. -

I got here at about 6:02 am after a way too early drive to DFW to drop my SO off. I am so glad they are real coffee house and open up early. As I was walking in the peeps from Artisan Bakery were walking out, which means the fresh picked peach muffin I got had come out of the oven within 30 minutes.... ahhhh
Onto the coffee. I was pretty comatose & bleary eyed as I ordered. They asked me something and I was able to recognize the word 'drip'. So drip is what I got... a really freakin' cool made to order drip coffee. They basically put a filter in a ceramic holder on top of a cup, put some fresh grounds in there and then pour hot water slowly over the ground coffee. How cool is that.
Off I went with the best cup of coffee I have ever purchased and a muffin that was perfectly peachy. What a way to start the day! -

Avoca Coffee, where have you been the last 8 months of my life? That's the amount of time I've lived in Fort Worth, and spent crying over the lack of hip and indy places in town!
I've been to Avoca almost every day since its soft opening four days ago, and all I can say is "well done!" Did you steal my Pandora station, Avoca? I enjoyed rockin' out to MIA and M. Ward today! The indy coffee shop is still developing, but in the next month I'm already envisioning cool art work on the wall (I'm sure the owners are too) and artsy magazines everywhere. Some daily newspapers would be great too, like the New York Times, Fort Worth Star Telegram, and the Wall Street Journal (something for everyone).
The baristas are incredibly friendly, greeting everyone who walks in and immediately making customers feel welcome. The numerous power outlets scream, "hang out for a while, study and work!" I work from home, which can get a little lonely, so I'm pretty excited about having a second office (don't worry owners, I'll buy lots of coffee, tea, and cookies if I'm there for a long time). The coffee and teas are delicious (I've tried a couple teas and the cafe cortado...YUM), the cookies are great too! The one thing that's been missing is soy milk--I hope that as they finalize stocking the shop they'll always have it on-hand (or at least ask Sprial Diner if you can borrow some when you run out!).
For the first time since I moved to Fort Worth I really felt a sense of community--and it seems that's been the one missing piece from the Magnolia area, a meeting place! This morning I saw almost 40 people stop by in the course of 30 minutes--everyone's been hungry, better yet thirsty, for a great place to hang out. Avoca Coffee, I'm so excited that you're here!Listed in: Hip, Quirky and Ethnic Fort…, Vegetarian in Cowtown

I have been in love with Avoca since the first time I visited it during the Art Goggle a few months ago. I've gotten many different drinks both hot and cold and have yet to be disappointed.
I also love the fact that they roast their own beans there on the premises and that they also carry Dude Sweet Chocolates (its nice not to have to drive all the way out to Bishop Arts every time I need a chocolate fix. Speaking of Dude, Sweet: they have actually teamed up with Avoca to specially formulate their mocha (totally drool-worthy).
Although their coffee and pastries tend to be a bit pricey I think this is an excellent replacement for Starbucks because the coffee is better and has a much more relaxing, comfortable atmosphere. -

This place is brand new. NEEDS SOME WORK, and it could be really cool
The space is really big and really empty. I liked that they roast their own coffee but the drinks were pretty boring and not strong enough.
The other set back was that they have this huge parking lot and NO outdoor seating. The woman behind the counter actually said "you can sit on the ground." Not interested so we took it to go and walked down the street.
I had a capp and it basically tasted like warm milk. I equate it to a glass of warm milk before you would go to bed. -
Review from andrew w.
Another coffee shop with nothing special/unique to offer. Big open space, cold colors, sharp shapes, hard surfaces and nowhere comfy to hang. We had to take it to-go down a block to be able to sit outside!
Come on Avoca pull it together!!!
Capp was weak as well. I don't think I should have to order a double just to taste the espresso. Sara B went so far as to say her drink tasted like milk.
Bummer. But it was only day two for this biz. Hopefully they read Yelp and will take the constructive criticism and do something with it. -

I love that they roast their own beans and I love that it's within walking distance.
My husbands coffee was good, weak for me but not bad. He said he liked his coffee from home better. My orange iced tea was nice.
Don't like the seating, it is just not very comfortable, feels cold, empty. I know it's a new place, but it just feels very mechanical. Is that even possible? It seems like there is a lot of wasted space. My husband did not like the double door entrance for some reason. I guess I want a cozy coffee shop that is warm and inviting. Remember The Bricks End on Camp Bowie?
No prices. I don't like having to ask, I feel cheap but I would like to know what I'm about to spend. We would have gotten a slice of cake that looked amazing if there had been a price. By the way the cakes and pastries looked scrumptious!
I hate the huge parking lot and hate that there is no outdoor seating :(
I hope they get outdoor seating and loose the huge parking lot or at least some of it.
I'll try it again. -

I am glad this place opened, but I think maybe it needs a little time to get it together. The coffee and espresso drinks are tasty, but all the times I've been there they are cool or lukewarm. It's not that hard to get water or milk to the proper temp, so I'm wondering if it's poor training/lack of thermometers.
The space could be really great; it needs some art/etc, something to soften it up. The pastries are delicious. All in all, I will be back in the hopes that the baristas figure out how to make a hot drink hot. -
Review from Kamintra R.

As an admitted coffee nerd, I love Avoca. They take their beverages seriously, and if they have time, they'll willingly geek out about it to you. Listen, learn, beg them to hold classes someday.
Because I like you so much, I'll even tell you what to order: the cortado. It's equal parts espresso and steamed milk. Done well, cortados are perfectly balanced, ever-so-slightly sweet, and take on a chocolatey edge. Done poorly, it lays bare every single mistake the barista makes.
Okay, enough about the coffee: I also love the vibe at Avoca. It's clean, comfortable, has plenty of plugs and...well...it doesn't try too hard. So many indie coffeeshops have a forced quirkiness about them. I guess some people like it, but it always comes off as just a bit too earnest to me. Great coffeeshops develop their own culture and scene. It grows out of the roots of the employees and customer base. Avoca is pretty new. To me, it currently gives the place an air of calm. I just hope they allow it to continue to grow in a way germane to their customer base.
Also notable: You can tell they've thought about function and have been willing to innovate to fit need rather than copy. They have an amazing mural that was painted atop plywood from their construction phase. They have an amazing electric-plug island and comfy bench seating with plugs in between. -

I like that there is a local coffee shop on Magnolia. Great location.
Pros: They roast their own coffee. Great location. Big garage doors that could open the whole place up.
Cons: I ordered an iced americano double and it was watered down. The seating is very plain (not creative) and mechanical (not comfy or inviting). No outdoor seating. They don't have prices on their menu. Boring music (and partially as a result, boring atmosphere).
This coffee shop has some mad potential, but is so plain and ordinary that as of now i would rather go to Stay Wired. Avoca has little character (but hopefully this will change as time goes by). My suggestions would be to serve stronger drinks, put prices on the menu, open up the big doors as often as possible, play music that is not typical coffee house music, and go to a thrift store and invest in some old comfortable furniture, serve mate, and consider serving local beers (and lone star).
Still beats the hell out of starbucks, and I will be going back. Keep working on it and this could soon be the best coffee shop in tarrant county. -

I've been there 3 times so far...enjoy the coffee very much. It's served at the perfect temperature for me, so I can drink it right away and enjoy it.
The space inside is open with great seating indoors, and these giant garage doors that I WISH they would open. We only have like 2 weeks of "spring" here in Texas and then it's scalding hot. And I would second the comment about the parking situation. It's tough, especially since they put those concrete parking things in the middle of the lot. I've been known to drive over them accidentally at other places.
Prices are reasonable, food selection is a little sparse (lots of carbs) but I really went for the coffee! -

Was excited to get something other than St*****ks. First visit was the worst. Cold welcome from worker and coffee was warm. Coffee creamer was not out, ask worker for creamer and hesitated to get it from fridge, no apologies... just placed the creamer on counter.
That's not all! Four of us sat and tried to dismiss the unfortunate welcome. Unaware of operating hours, we sat and drank our coffees. Suddenly, 1/2 of the shop's lights turned off and discovered that the 2nd worker had hit the light switch to hint for patrons to get the hell out. No verbal courtesy warning... just OFF as they continued with their cleaning to close shop. Felt like I was at a department store at closing time. Needless to say, we were all shocked. Sipped the last of what we had left and walked out as they watched us leave without a single word. You'll never catch us at Avoca again! -

Great coffee? Not really. I've had better. Great pastries? Not really. I've had better without a hair in it. . . This was my first visit and I'm sad to say, probably my last. No prices listed and they are about $1 - 2 more than the chain places. They do have the garage doors that they can roll up and offer outdoor seating, however they weren't rolled up on a nice Sunday morning and I don't know if they ever do. Next time, I'll go to Starbucks on Rosedale.

Fort Worth, TX
Holy crap, it's about time we had our indy coffee shop on Magnolia, and I seriously couldn't ask for a better one than AVOCA!
Avoca is the only coffee shop in Texas where I've had coffee that even remotely compares to the coffee I had (and loved) in Portland, Oregon. It's not bitter and has so many complex flavors (and doesn't taste burnt) and it's served at a drinkable temperature, not scalding hot like at so many places around here. Coffee should be hot, but it shouldn't burn your friggin' tongue off. They've gotten the temperature right every time. PROPS!
Another plus is that their soy-based drinks are not just a careless afterthought (curdled soy makes me cry)--they are done well! Being a crazy vegan I appreciate that. The soy in their lattes is smooth and foamy and so good! Their iced soy lattes are also amazing--so rich and awesome you won't believe it! They also offer rice milk and coconut milk for the non-dairy-consumers among us. And they will make your latte unsweetened if you prefer. But if you do like sugar, they make their own syrups from turbinado sugar.
Other pluses: super nice baristas and the owners rock. They have soy on the condiment bar, unlike most places. A previous review mentioned that the condiment bar seemed neglected. It may have been incomplete when they first opened, but now it is robust and glorious and you should go back and check it out!
I've been here every day since they opened (except maybe one), and I will keep going back because (a) it is GOOD and (b) it's just a cool place to go and chill with a drink and your laptop (because I like to LIVE the stereotype) and some friends. I always run into people I know, or meet new people from the 'hood. Now that they're open, it seems like Avoca has always been here. It's the place where everyone just seems to congregate now. I am so happy Avoca is here! -

We were so looking forward to this coffee shop opening. 4 of us went for coffee and found the choices boring- the iced coffee was tasteless and watered down, the staff is not friendly, and our server was rude and on a rant bashing Star Bucks, the atmosphere was blah. We tried the desserts- they were not tasty, cookies were dry, cake tasted very greasy, and in general just not very good. Very disappointed with what we got for $35 (and they do not post prices so you don't know the price of anything). Not at all friendly or inviting.
Will go back to Star Bucks.
