the Caldillo is geat! served piping hot and fresh!
The Avila Super combo is good too: almost one of everything, tasty!
Prices are so-so, but worth going to and try again!
Beef fajita fiest is slamming too!
My fav? Fajita salad!  A TRUE MUST HAVE!

i'd give this actually 3.5 stars..

the food is decent... nothing that really knocks your socks off..

i ordered combo 1.. it came with a beef taco.. tamale... enchilada with red sauce.. rice and beans.. the tamale was mediocre.. the enchilada with the red sauce didn't taste very fresh.. the beef taco was decent.. i'm not a fan of crispy tacos..

my fiancee got 3 shredded beef tacos in a corn shell.. the taco shells weren't fried.. and the beef was quite flavorful.. it needed some acid.. but i would come back again for their tacos.. provided it isn't fried..

the sopadillas (spelling?) was damn good.... nice and crispy.. with a drizzle of honey.. awesome stuff..

overall.. you could do worse than come to avila's for mexican food

In reading about Avila's, I fully expected to be blown away by the quality of food, service, and ambiance.  Though I thought the food was good, I wouldn't say that it is any better than many of the other recommended Mexican restaurants in El Paso.

I first ordered the chicken tostadas.  My mistake on this one...The dish came out covered in excessive cheese and lettuce.  The chicken had several bad chunks (pieces of bone, etc.) and an overt amount of avocado.  So I ended up ordering another dish instead.  The waiter was very accommodating.

The chicken enchiladas were much better and the refried beans were more tasty then most.  I too enjoyed the sopapillas after the meal.
Bottomline, it was probably as much my fault as any for ordering the chicken tostadas, but even the enchiladas didn't knock my socks off nor equate to being "voted the best Mexican restaurant in El Paso."

Consistently good and always hot but rather limited menu selection; Delicious complimentary Sopapillas.
I didn't care for their margaritas.
But overall good!

I treat my in-laws to lunch here once a year (on our yearly visits). It's got a wonderful atmosphere, decent food, and I love the complimentary sopapillas. The chili con queso is heavenly (also available as sauce over burritos etc.).

Avila's is probably my favorite mom-and-pop Mexican restaurant in El Paso, and that says ALOT.  They have amazingly tasty gorditas, great combos, their salsa is unique and very tasty, and their chips are fresh and not greasy or cold.  I've always had friendly and speedy service, and I haven't tried a dish there that I've been disappointed with.  They also have grrrrreat sopapillas and honey for dessert, something you don't see alot here in El Paso (you've gotta venture into NM for that good stuff).  I know everyone is partial to a mom-and-pop place of their own, but this one is totally worth a try, it's one of my favs!

The absolute best Mexican food I've had in my life...I've gotten the #10 ever since I was a little girl...chili con queso (the best you've ever tasted) and beans....all I can say is...YUM!!! My mouth waters just thinking about it!
