Mama Avila's provides a textbook lesson in carnitas. Start by marinating fatty pork shoulder with loads of garlic; braise until tender and falling apart, and then roast under high heat until the exterior is crispy and craggly.  Carve into generous hunks, and serve immediately with warm, house-made corn tortillas and a dollop of guacamole.

If the lesson ended here, El Ranchito could be four-star dining. But the obligatory rice pilaf, bland beans with melted cheese, pile of shredded iceberg, and orange wedge all drag this fine plate of flavorful meat down like an anchor. Sometimes, in plating, presentation, and portion size, less can be more.

This place is great for a traditional mexican meal. Service is very down to earth. They have great margheritas and homemade tortillas.Downside is the parking and it gets very crowded.

This is the place where I have lunch with the famous and beautiful 'El Paty' ... Patty will you now write a review!!!

Great place! Everything is homemade. There are plenty of Mexican restaurants, but what distinguishes one from the other is their authenticity and genuine flavor to the food. And they do have those ingrediants! Other Mexican restaurants will compromise by adding a grip of cheese and man, that doesnt always work.

In any event, everything here is a great and would definitely recommend it. There Horchata is probably one of the sweetest I ever tasted.

Love this place.  Warm staff, great service, spacious, always busy and rivals El Cholo for VERY tasty Mexican food despite being a chain.

Everything on the menu is worth trying (watch for the hefty portions) but my favorite?  I KILL for the Mama Avila's Soup... hearty pieces of shredded white meat chicken in the most mouthwatering broth, and you pick and choose what and how much of the plate of finely chopped onions/cilantro, rice, lemon, and avocado that you'd like to dump in.  Suits the claim as a "meal in itself."  A must-eat.

I used to not like guacamole, but then I came here and fell in love with guac.  This is probably the best Mexican restaurant I've been to, and I highly recommend ANY of their dishes.  I usually just go for the tacos, but almost EVERYTHING here is solid, ranging from their enchiladas to the soup.

The prices are great, the service is awesome, and you get bottom less chips, which might be more harm than good since I usually go through 2 of them by myself before deciding to stop.  I'm surprised this place isn't rated more or higher, but it is honestly a MUST GO for Mexican food.

I can't say enough about this place.

This is a place I grew up on thanks to my dad. Me and my brother expected to come here at least 2-3 times a month every Saturday. We pratically became regulars that the waitresses would already know our order as soon as we would walk in.

This is as close to home cooking that you can get whether it's grandma's, mom's, or your aunt's.

A lot of the stuff is great on the menu my personal favorite is Coctel de Camaron y Abalone, also my dads favorite Carne al Carbon, and so much more like their Enchiladas Suizas, Mole, Fajitas, etc

We loved this place!
The atmosphere and the service were very good.
The chips and (hot!) salsa were fantastic and plentiful. We had huge meals that we liked.
The best part came with the bill - we ate for less than $25 for the two of us. (We don't drink alcohol, but that's still really cheap!)

so ...mm mexican food. double mmmm when its fresh ingredients and old fashoined recipe's. when i started my new job i was taken here for the 'getting to know you' lunch and it was excellent. food taste great. service is excellent  atmosphere is very happy and large rooms. they have several locations which is nice. i highly recommend this place as an restaurant to take 5 or more people and have a relativley inexpensive and tasty time.
i ate a simple platter of two combo dish. im very picky so i ordered how ahem i like my food and it was perfect(might i add they were super busy) food was very well presented, fresh, and the key "hot" when it got to my table.... hope anyone who eats here has just as wonderful of a time as i did " buen provecho"...

Another one of L.A's hidden gems, El Ranchito not only offers you exquisite Mexican cuisine, but an excellent atmosphere and outstanding dining experience.

It's very easy to look past El Ranchito given it's awkward setting. It's nestled in an area dominated by hispanic taco shacks at every corner. But when you step inside you'll immediately feel welcomed and appreciated. Hearty traditional Mexican dishes are served to your likes. Personally I'm a big fan of the Chile Relleno and pork dishes. But theres a little bit of everything here.

If your a fan of Traditional Mexican food, make sure you make El Ranchito one of your stops.

I haven't been to this place since I was about 15 years old..but I will always remember their EXCELLENT food!  The salsa and chips used to be so spicy and burn our mouths, but we couldn't resist.  We'd get this combination plate that had 2 cheese enchilada's and we'd be stuffed walking out of the restaurant.

Perhaps I romanticize this place too much because my parents had many a date here...and given the fact that they were an interracial couple in the 70's, it was the nicest service they could find...While the food is good, theyd of never grown like they have if it wasn't for the service.....

Great mexican food, good ambiance and excellent decor. Could do a little better but a great eat.

Pricing is fair and the service is great. When we went there was a mariachi playing on the restaurant floor. The cops seem to like eating there too!!!

The seven seas soup tastes could be better but very filling and tasty. Good for two people, the salsa and chips were homemade and wonderful. The tostadas were great but huge and the burrito was on par.

Excellent Mexican food. Excellent food, period. You must try the carne asada; it's the best I've ever had in my life. Actually, this is the best Mexican restaurant I can think of. I've also had the chile relleno and the taquitos and tacos, but I almost always go back to the carne asada. You can watch them make their own tortillas. I both love and hate that I don't live in the area. Wherever you are in LA, it's defintely worth the drive. The only downside is that it's ALWAYS busy, and it's a little loud, but that's to be expected in a big crowded restaurant.

avila's is a chain of 11 family owned restaurants with locations in costa mesa, long beach, newport beach, corona del mar, santa ana and san clemente among others.

i don't remember which location was the first to open 40+ years ago, however, the first one was a very low key operation serving recipes from the matriarch of the family brought over from her native guanajuato mexico.

i've been to three of their locations (long beach and santa ana are the others) and the ambiance of each one is pretty much the same across the board. you can expect on location hand made tortillas, troubadours with guitar in hand approaching your table and serenading you, fresh guacamole and all manner of mexican beer brands.

the food itself is alright although i've never thought this place is great with fish. i'd stick with meat or poultry. there is saturday and sunday brunch and that's definetely worth going to. there is something about mexican breakfasts that makes it good comfort food.

i will say sometimes any of these places can get super crowded (i just don't like super crowded places) and will take some amounts of liquor to get over that. a plus is there are large t.v.'s throughout the eating area that is ideal for game watching with your food.

prices are reasonable. here is a list of their menu:

http://www.el-ranchito...

it's pretty standard fare stuff but if you're looking for some good carne asada and beer (i don't particularly care for their mixed drinks. it's all about the beer in these places) this is the place.

Great Mexican Food! I'm taking one star off because I've been here on two different occassions and ordered the same thing: pozole and it tasted different both times. I fell in love with it the first time and was looking forward to it the second time and I was disappointed. The tacos were good (not the best I've tasted though) and my friends really liked what they ordered. I guess this teaches me the lesson of ordering something different, everytime. Oh well. I'm in search for my pozole heaven but at this rate, I don't know how likely that's going to be.

this place is great.  try the avila's soup on a cold day, it's amazing.   handmade  corn tortilla's, live soccer on the plasma tv's.  old school mexican food.  family owned and operated, your'e likely to see the owner when you're eating.  carnitas is great here.  you really can't go wrong here, except for the gringo fare," favoritos" i believe they are called on the menu.
