Avila Beach Golf Course
3 reviews for Avila Beach Golf Course
I usually classify Golf courses as on a scale of "Bring tons of beer and stash it in your bag" and then variants up to "Gorgeous but impossible to score under 100 on". I would say Avila Beach falls somewhere in the middle to high range and could be assigned the "Pretty but not gorgeous, affordable and if you brought beer bring an import but one that comes in a six pack not one that you buy by the bottle".
Something that should be noted as well. If San Luis Country Club is classified as a 0-2 lost balls style course, this is in the range of 10 lost balls. There are lots of water shots, high grass near the road, mountains, dry creeks and other areas for lonely golf balls to be forgotten or disappear in. So bring plenty of sleeves of your favorite white ammunition.
Avila beach is just about one of the most beautiful places I've been and while the golf course is not drop dead gorgeous, it IS in Avila Beach. It doesn't get as much fog as a normal beach town so the course is quite beautiful in the morning.
The course is put together nicely with a few hard holes with fast greens but most are pretty straight forward. The staff and pro's are friendly and I have yet to have a bad experience getting on/off the course or dealing with the pro shop.
Pricing is moderate. They have a great infinite golf package that I'd recommend if you are planning on playing there a lot. They are partnered with Black Lake Golf (27 holes) so it's a great deal. The infinite package includes a lot of 2 for 1's, $99 4-somes, free balls, 50% greens fees, etc.
Hope you have fun and remember the import beer.
The site: Just past the little town of Avila Beach on the main drag is a nondescript turn into a windy road up a small hill and into a small parking lot. Unless you ask - you could miss it.
The clubhouse: pretty nice. The bar and food establishment is small but covers the bet. Hard liquor is available as well as beer and wine. The food available at the turn is great and the phone number for the food is posted at the 8th hole (a nice downhill par 3) - call ahead. I didn't but you should.
Driving range: Yup. Just to the right of the first hole - get the balls at the pro shop. Grass - no mats. Classy.
Overall vibe: The course is set in the hills of Avila Beach - it is idyllic and pretty. Deer roam the coarse and from time to time block your shots. When you ask them to move aside, however politely you might ask, they will look at you sarcastically and eventually meander to the side. Bastards. A creek (more like a smallish river) runs throughout the course which means lots of water throughout the course to hit over. Don't even get me started... The course was dropped into the geography and not the other way around - the fairways have many turns and dips - challenging and fun.
Greens and stuff: nice shape across the board.
Maps: In no way do the hole maps represent the fairway in some cases and on your first trip around the track - it is surprise after surprise after surprise.
The golf: I enjoyed it. Long course. Lots of fun. Not boring in the least. Take someone you like to go play.
Slow play! Canadian geese on the course, which made for challenging shots, be careful of all the excrement. Nice course with beautiful scenery!
