Incredible selection of goods here. Truly, I am hard to impress in the design department and this place regularly suits my fancy.
Here I found a gorgeous white picture frame covered in ridiculous gaudy moulding that was truly something I had never seen before. It was $200 bucks and the owner even gave me a discount for the fact that it had "been hanging on the wall for awhile". The picture frame in it's rareness and craftsmanship is easily worth $2K in my opinion, it's so unique and beautiful.
If you want: an amazing couch- go here. Skip design within reach if you want something unique for the price point.
Another excellent amazing fact: THEY SERVE YOU WINE AT NIGHT. This place also functions as a bar in the evening hours and the wine is excellent. They also have little cheese plates. It's so precious it reminds me of home (pacific northwest).
Ladies- take your man in here, get him buzzed and feel free to look at cute things without discouragement. -

So I am slightly overdue for an update of Aviary . . . especially considering they weren't even serving wine the last time I wrote a review. It's also one of those places I don't want everyone to know about because I love it so much and want to keep it all to myself.
However, I need to tell the world what a unique and relaxing spot Aviary is to go meet friends for a drink or two. They have the best charcuterie and it is always changing. I'm a big fan of the pates, but the meats and cheeses are always spectacular as well.
There is always something new and fun going on. I'm dying to check out their comedy night. But mostly I like sitting on really nice furniture imagining what it would look like in my house.Listed in: Norm!, Austin Charcuterie

Aviary | I arrived Day 1, Night 1, Met owner Marco Fiorilo
The appeal is the incredible furniture, the ease of the fun Urban/Bohemian feel of the decor, the original art, the black walls, the massive screen for watching old movies WHILE drinking a clever selection of rare wines, bubbles, and the indulgence of meats and cheese with a few sweets. On a Wednesday night, this place was packed wall to wall with people. Everyone sitting on the couches, the padded benches lining the walls, the brightly covered pillows, the dishes hanging on the wall, the raw wood staircase, sipping wine, eating meat and cheese, a beautiful vibe in good ole "weird" Austin. Half-priced bottle Wednesday is just one of the many clever lures Marco and Shanna have created.
I have the pleasure of meeting Marco who is a part of every aspect of this place. The selections of IPA's, the careful selection of wine, the art and decor he owns (and sells), the customers that know him well, and the ease he has just makes the experience so much better. Granted I'm with people who know him well but that aside, he has an air of cool and calm that makes anyone that comes in feel welcome.
Day 2 | Afternoon 2: Met Wife and Owner, Shanna Eldridge
Came to Aviary to write this article, bask in the amazing pieces of furniture, the fantastic pieces of art spread throughout the place, sip on Cava Bubbles, and eat chorizo, smoked salmon pate, coppa, fig wrapped brie, and smoked gouda. A perfect way to spend the afternoon. Today, Shanna is there. We spoke for a while and shared our stories of travel and motherhood and well, my appreciation for this place deepens. She is beautiful and easy-going and talking to her is like talking to an old friend. She and Marco certainly have created a wine bar and home decor store that trumps just about every experience I've had - certainly is on par with some of my favorites. It reminds me of Bohemian New York with the twist of originality of Austin, Marco, Shanna, and even has a subtle undertone of the boutique stores and wine shops in Northern California.
Shanna Eldridge - Wife, Mother, and Owner| Marco Fiorilo - Husband, Father, and Owner
Inspired from spending time at Robin Dubois in Brooklyn and Paisley in Manhattan (both have closed). Shanna loved the store and after visiting the stores in New York, she and Marco decided to start Aviary. While they sold furniture and home decor solely in the beginning, the goal was always to develop it into a Wine Bar where people could lay on the furniture, relax on the chairs, admire the Art on the walls, the random and amazing pieces available for purchase all the while sipping on truly authentic wines and indulging in the Cheese and Meats selection of the day. This has proven my little creative haven so far... -

We went to Aviary for a night cap after having dinner down the street. When we arrived there was a group of people sipping on wine who seemed to be having a fantastic time. We took a seat at the bar, ordered two glasses (each of which were delish') and struck up a conversation with the owner, Marco. He was an amazing host and the overall experience felt more like a night spent in a fabulously decorated friend's home than a business. Our next two glasses of wine were each better than the first. The Tuesday night $2 specials were an added plus. If we were Austin residents we would return to Aviary time and again. We couldn't ask for anything more in a neighborhood wine bar.

The most unique wine bar I have ever visited. More like a living room than bar. Marco is very knowledgeable and personable. Great for meeting up with friends.

Wow, who knew this was even here? It felt like hanging out with friends over some good wine - because that's exactly what it was. A casual environment, a knowledgeable bartender, an unusual beer selection... How very cool!
Like Kelly S said - it's just the right blend of friend and host to make you feel great. Highly recommended for those who enjoy a relaxing night among friends.
Just don't let your dog crap on the carpet. -

Aviary is my Cheers and Marco is my Sam.
In addition to all of the cool furniture and home decor that Marco, the proprietor of Aviary, has culled, he also serves up wine, beer, cheese and charcuterie.
The charcuterie is insane. Thai salami with flavors of red curry, kaffir lime and lemongrass is one of the greatest tasting (and most unique) offerings I've had in a long time. To say I'm a fan is an understatement.
Marco takes great pride in finding interesting wines, beers, and nibbles for his establishment and it shows. I always feel at home here whether it's an evening with my main squeeze or a group of loud ladies and Marco and his wife are the most gracious hosts indeed.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Love this place! The owners are great people...the charcuterie plate is amazing! You get to choose your meats and cheeses from the available list.
It was great drinking some wine and snacking and then strolling around the store shopping. I highly recommend this place to anyone wanting a nice, chill happy hour place or just a good place to hang out on a lazy afternoon! -
Review from Kelly S.
You know when you're just sitting in your home and someones serving you delicious wine, charcuterie plates, micheladas and also speaking knowledgeably about design, style, wine trends? Well it's like that. Except that would never happen in your own home.
So you take a little trip to Aviary, where the wine selection is impeccable, the beer selection impressive, the small plates delectable and the company (Marco) is just the right blend of friend and excellent host. This spot is so fabulous it always amazes me that people don't know it's there.
Not only can you buy pretty things and sink into big chairs to play board games, you can screen movies in there, have a guitarist, have a nice glass of wine or three and escape from the melee and madness of South Lamar and life in general.
ProTip: They do cork dork and beer dork nights where they feature awesome selections and intelligent discussion. -

Walking into Aviary, I almost expected to hear everyone raise their glasses and shout, "Norm!" (except, I suppose they'd call, "Carolyn!" instead). No one did, of course, because, well, it was my first time there. I was, however, immediately greeted and warmly welcomed, and, as I looked around the shop-slash-bar, I definitely felt like I was hanging out at someone's chic, loft-like, hipster home.
There is one main bar in the center of the store, which helps to separate the shop into "living spaces." You can get comfy on some couches and relax in front of a big screen (for films), or you can grab a more intimate seat at a smaller table. Or, on a beautiful and breezy Fall afternoon, you can enjoy some wine and charcuteries outdoor, while watching the sunset on the front deck! My girlfriend and I chose the latter, and we popped open a bottle of Chilean cabernet (Errazuriz) to sip on and enjoy.
We ordered the Large Charcuterie Plate ($15), which allowed us to pick any combination of five items they had available. We tried their salmon pate, truffle salami, Luccesi prosciutto, ghost pepper jack cheese, and vaca joven cheese. The salmon pate and truffle salami were the most memorable and impressive, with beautiful layers of flavors. Everything else was...unremarkable. The portions were also pretty meager. Not sure how well it'd suit a larger table or group. Also, my friend is gluten-intolerant, and she was sad to learn there was no GF cracker option...yet...
I was also a little disappointed that there wasn't any real Happy Hour deal, though there is a daily deal for each day of the week. The wine and beer selection, though not extensive, is decently varied (c'mon Carolyn. It's Aviary "lounge," not Aviary "BAR").
Service was personal and attentive, as if we were not just dinner guests, but friends at a dinner party. My friend and I had a wonderful evening over delectable wine, and we will definitely be back soon! Cheers! -

Go! It's like hanging out in someone's living room... with a big screen TV, wine and cheese/meat plate and bill at the end:-). Yum yum... the pate.. it's super scrumptious. The wine options - perfect. Marco and his wife's passion about the place - priceless. (They constantly update their wines and change menu options, based on the season, to foster the building of regulars - great idea... if I lived in south Austin, I would definitely be one.
Next week they have a foie gras and wine I'm interested in trying... will head back out.
BTW: started with a cup soft press coffee. LOVED the cup.. kept it hot but my hands comfy -

Came here for a drink while we were waiting for our table at Barley Swine, and fell in love with the place - The eclectic decor, where no two chairs are the same, but still very comfortable vibe to the whole place. There's only one guys who runs the show, but he is very friendly and helpful. They also have a nice selection of wines and beers, though they only have cheese plates for nibbles.
A cute little hole in the wall place that I am sure to visit again! -

Wine bar--with very few items in the "store" which comes across as an after thought.
I was confused by the yelp reviews. I went, thinking it was more of a boutique. It's not.
So we looked at the wine list/beer list. Not much of a selection for whites--which is surprising--who really drinkings bold reds when it's hot outside? Didn't have my favorite varietal, Sauvingion Blanc. :(
We went in on a Saturday afternoon and we were the only ones there aside from some sort of wedding shower. It felt awkward to stick around such a small place and drink. -

This place is kind of hard to find the first time. The store kind of look like a boutique clothing or furniture store to me, so it was a little confusing at first. But this place is awesome! the decoration and environment is really austiny. plus there's a bed right in the middle of the bar. best idea ever! and there're plenty of board games, great for a big group of friends. wine n cheese were good too. and the staff was really friendly n helpful.

Have you ever been inside a swanky joint and thought, I would like to purchase that candle holder, those pillows, that chair, etc.? You can not only admire the decor at this wine bar but also purchase it. That's cool.
The drinks were fine, but I think next time I will explore the wine menu more. The atmosphere was wonderful because it was open, bright, and perfect for a lazy Saturday afternoon of playing board games and talking. -

i really liked this place...we went on a quiet tuesday night but i believe weekends are noisy. i want to go back on a sat when i believe they might have karaoke and 80s.
pros: it;s like sitting at home, move the furniture around as you please so good for dynamic sized groups; good wine & beer selections; the owner Marco is super nice; a white screen where you could project stuff...
cons: can't really dance there...but maybe you can..depending on how much space you need to move... -

Wine and cheese--yes please!
Okay so Aviary is actually a home furnishing store. Sandwiched in the middle of a small strip shopping center Aviary is not what you would think. When you walk into the store you will immediately notice various and sundry tables, chairs, frames, knick knacks and art work--all for sale. And right smack in the middle of this is a small bar. Here you can order beer or wine by the bottle or glass, and then take your said item and plop down to drink it on one of those many pieces of chairs and tables that are for sale. I know, it's kind of weird but just don't spill anything on the furnishings.
On Wednesdays they have half price bottles of wine and on Fridays they have $10 off bottles of wine PLUS they always show a film of some sort (usually a foreign film but sometimes a documentary) on Friday nights. The area where the film is shown is in the back of the store and has bean bag chairs, pillows, red shag carpet and small tables. You can order a cheese plate if you want that is $10 that includes your choice of 3 slices of cheese (or meats if you prefer), with a few slices of bread and some honey and olives. The cheese plate is a great compliment to the wine. The owner buys his cheese and meat locally (within a 150 mile radius of Austin).
Aviary would be a great date place because it is unique and simple yet elegant and intimate. You can even sit outside on picnic tables just be aware that they face Lamar Blvd which has a lot of traffic and can be loud. -

So I love this place. It is the perfect hangout spot in South Austin. I've only been on half price Wine Wednesdays but it is consistently awesome. The owner Marco is so nice and helpful which really does make all the difference. The wine I have had here has been delicious and reasonably priced.
The concept of this place, a show room bar, is genius. I loved all the different types of seating arrangements and ambiance. One time when I went I cool musical duo was playing which was very enjoyable.
Definitely recommend this funky-cool place. -
Review from Wes A.
I suggested this joint for a pre-birthday drink date. Why not celebrate your birthday all week instead of just the day of?
This place is a great concept and idea. But that's where it comes to a screeching halt. It's a great idea on paper but ineffectively carried out. Thankfully, the couch that we parked ourselves in was comfy. But the coffee table we had in front of us was a concrete slab on pig legs (don't ask). We both threw our backs into it and could barely move it an inch. In case you're wondering, it was listed at $1200 according to the price tag on it.
I went into this place with high hopes after reading all these rave reviews. But I left feeling awkward and uncomfortable like I was invited to the cool kid table at the high school cafeteria and had nothing to talk about. -

Review from AMY D.
After a movie fail at the Alamo South Lamar (something went wrong last night and they claimed until further notice no food or drink sales) I had to quickly scheme up a plan B. Sharing the evening with a friend from out of town that adores quirky odd things and/or places as well as wine, Aviary quickly came to mind.
The store/wine bar decor is full of interesting wall art, over sized random furniture, has movie/shows playing over a large area of the wall above a picture filled fire place...it was truly her cup of tea.
We came on a "Frugal Friday" as Aviary puts it, offering up $10 off all bottles of wine. We shared a bottle of Syrah we both thought was decent at $14 a bottle. We had a great experience at Aviary and enjoyed our evening out.
Note: Almost every week day night is a win at Aviary with $2 Tuesdays (beer and wine), 1/2 off wine (bottles) Wednesdays and $3 (beer and wine) Thursdays.Listed in: The Party Never Stops!

There's no way to say this without seeming creepy. But we MAY have ventured over to Aviary to spy on my friend's date. As soon as we got there, we sat down at the bar, chatted with the owners, & had a glass of wine...and I soon forgot our motives for being there.
They have a fantastic wine list - complete with one of my recent favorites, a Cab Franc. I'm also always on the search for a good Santa Barbara wine since Tom H. introduced me...and lo and behold, they had that too! The owner talked with us for awhile and was happy to answer any questions I had about their wine list, how they choose what to carry, etc.
If you're a huge wine fan, check it out on Wednesday nights (half-price bottles) - it's a cozy atmosphere and a great place for a date or even better, to chill with a few girlfriends. -
Review from Nikki G.
Marco is the best! He recommended a superb South African chenin blanc that I am simply in love with. I'm here nearly every Wednesday for half-price bottle night. There's always a delicious assortment of cheeses and pates to choose from for the charcuterie plates, and I've wiled away many hours with friends on the deck.
I'm almost afraid to post this review because I enjoy how moderately popular this place is and I'm afraid the hordes will descend once they figure out what a hidden gem Aviary is. -

Cool concept - store and wine bar. And I love how he is big into local wines and especially cheeses - all Texas cheeses. We enjoyed one of his many daily specials ($2 glasses) while sipping on his porch watching S. Lamar cruise by.
Store had some cool stuff too.
I'll be back. -

I am so in love with Aviary....
There is shag carpet, giant bean bag chairs, and 1/2 price bottles on Wednesdays. That's amazing. And then there are inexpensive (but still tasty and artfully plated) cheese and meat plates. We ordered the salami and muenster, which came with multiple slices of bread and figs and a drizzle of honey. What else could a girl ask for on Wednesday? Except for a random guy to invite her and her friends to a fabulous party at the W the next night. Oh wait that happened. Thanks Aviary! -

The Aviary Lounge is a great place to relax South Austin style (and a boutique store full of cool stuff you don't see anywhere else). If you're looking for a french cellar sized wine list, or wall length menu of beer on tap, then head downtown where you'll pay for parking, have to fight over the throngs of people to get served, and never even know the name of the people serving you. At the Aviary Lounge, you don't have to deal with any of that.
The wine and beer list is hand picked by the owners and is more like a hand chosen art pallate for your taste buds (but not as pretentious as that sounds). Plan on a laid back night where you can actually hear spoken conversation and open your mind a bit to appreciate, understand and really enjoy an evening here. Prices are surprisingly affordable and they run specials most nights, if not all, so you can alway try something new at at a great price.
The concept is "lounge" and "mellow", not "party", or "drinking buddies".
Marco is a generous and laid back guy who welcomes guests to the shop like old friends into his home. You'll instantly feel welcome and warm here.
It's a unique experience and once you try it, you'll come back. -

It doesn't get any better than this. This place feels like home! Great beer and wine selection and great daily specials. I first experienced the concept of wine fused with home decor in Europe years back and I'm happy to see the idea made it's way to my neck of the woods. If the idea isn't your gig, do yourself and everyone else a favor:
1. don't give Aviary a bad review for being cool and one-of-a-kind.
2. Continue to frequent Chile's or Applebee's where your Budweiser and Miller Light is the beer of the month. -

I stumbled across this place in search for some stuff to decorate my apartment with. I had no idea it would become one of my favorite places to have a glass of wine.
They have great happy hour specials on full bottles of wine or just a glass. One of the main reasons I love this place is the service. They are more than just friendly there. Whether it's suggesting a wine or random chit chat.
One day I'll try the cheese plate that looks amazing ;) -

Aviary is one of those places I walk into and immediately exclaim, "Oh! I like it here." Then 5 minutes later I think, "Actually I love it here." And then I want to fold it up to a pocket-sized place and take it back to my own city, plop it on my street corner and become a regular. Art on the wall, goods for sale, comfy seats, cool DJ, a screen for cult classic movies, lovely beer and wine lists, and cheese and meat plates all set the super cool environment and experience at this place.
I sampled several varieties of wines, meats, and cheeses and found not one to complain about. The owner and people working here are as chill as can be and the vibe is one of those amazing neighborhood feels where everyone belongs and is cool. If you live in Austin you're doing yourself a disservice to not hang out here at least once in a while.Listed in: It's me! In Austin!, Some of my favorite places…

Dropped by Aviary one night with my sis after reading all the great reviews. I like the place - the boutique/bar concept is really cool and I really dug the ambiance.
However, I can't honestly say I had the outstanding experience everyone else seems to have. The bartender - who, I've learned, was NOT Marco - seemed much more interested in talking to and serving his friends than me and my sister. I'm not usually one to complain about having to wait at bars, but you need to understand that the "bar" at Aviary is very tiny - only slightly larger than the bar in the average house. We stood there for about 10 minutes while the guy talked to everyone else and served people who walked up well after we did. He looked directly at me a few times too, so he knew I was waiting. The whole thing was kind of odd. Anyway, eventually he served us (and was friendly, I suppose) and we went outside.
I DID like the fact that they serve Quilmes (an Argentine beer) and everyone was drinking it.
Obviously I didn't have the typical Aviary experience (maybe it was just an off night), so I will certainly return to give it a second chance.
It's definitely a neat place to go - especially if you're with a small group of friends. It's pretty laid back and intimate - almost like a private party than a bar. -
Review from Don B.
Home decór store. Cool accessory boutique. Wine bar? Yup. All three.
Aviary is such an odd place, but that's where it gets its cool. By day, this little shop offers up some cool local and national design-heavy furnishings, ornaments, and accessories, and in the evenings, becomes a wine and beer bar, sometimes with DJ.
There's a small bar in the middle of the room, flanked on one side by the store, and on the other by a small chill-out area with benches and bean bags. The wine and beer lists are carefully chosen, and a quick chat with the proprietor reveals both his love for and knowledge of both beverage mediums. I hear his personal collection is both eclectic and rare.
We had a fun little group event in this space. We posted up with a DJ, took over the chill out area, and imbibed in some wine and beer drinkin' fun. The owner was a great guy to party with, and made sure we were well taken care of.
Such a fun, funky little spot. It again reminded me of Portland... or at least a bizarre Portland that doesn't suffer from idiotic, oppressive liquor laws.Listed in: Austin!, Austin Watering Holes

This place is so OMGay. No it does not mean only the gay goes here straight from the parade, so pull your drawers out of your crack if you have a problem with that. If you don't know, OMGay is another way of saying you are missing out if you are not here - gay or not.
Who else in this city is innovative enough to turn a furniture store into a lounge as well? One that shows Keep Austin Weird movies for free, serves seriously yummy food and delicious wines? One where you feel like your BFF invited you over in addition to a few other friends to hang, but there just happens to be a few stylishly dressed extra friendlies to wait on you?
Granted it is small, but that just adds to the intimacy for me; this artsy/lofty lounge is definitely one of my favs. Once that sun falls down, look out - OMGay squared!Listed in: ZZZZzzzzzzz

Meet the new Aviary, same as the old Aviary...but better! The long-anticipated evolution of this place from clever home furnishings boutique to the same with added wine bar element is complete. And while I wasn't exactly sure how that would mesh when I originally heard about it, they stuck the landing here. It's considerably more fun to lounge with an eccentric brew or glass of red than it was to browse about sans same, and we did exactly that recently.
The bones of the room haven't changed particularly, but what I found really interesting turned out to be an easy transition in philosophy: the walls and accoutrements, the quirky artisan pillows and tables still exist, but now may be accompanied by a lingering glass of your favorite grape or brew, and turns out that's an easy switch. They aren't re-inventing the wheel here, but they're certainly augmenting it. And that's where the great stories lie.Listed in: Drinking in Austin, Austin!, Shopping in Austin, Austin Wine, Austin South Lamar

We were at Black Sheep Lodge last night....and they turned on the Tejano music channel way too loud......Praise Jah for bro next door at Aviary spinning some Sister Nancy, Bob Marley, Tosh, etc.
We strolled into Aviary, grabbed some drinks and jammed for a while. Pretty chill vibe inside. I have bought some items from the store for my girl's birthday and their selection is "fresh", or so I was told upon the gift exchange.
They also didn't mind the fact that we puffed a few spliffs on the patio....that's always worth a star in my book. If you're a guy looking to buy a lady a S. Austin chic gift...here's your place. It's not bad for a beer either.Listed in: Where I drink my drinks

I'll keep it short and simple: I want to max out my credit card here. It's very clear the owners have a great design sense - just the right balance of clean and modern, but whimsical too. My boyfriend and I can't get enough of the Argentinian wood+leather chair we bought - it's an inexpensive, out of the ordinary, and beautifully designed piece - the kind of chair that stops you in your tracks (in a good way) every time you enter the room. It's these kinds of rare finds you'll find here.
In sum: Fantastic service, great design, and an overall fun place to stroll into and shop. I think this store has what it takes to become an Austin institution. And an evening wine bar coming soon? Yes, please. -

I wanted to take home everything in this store with me...including the owner's puppy & adorable 2 year old son, Enzo. Although I was here for fun times with the Yelp Elite Squad, I had the pleasure of stopping by earlier in the day so I got to shop around a bit. Marco, the owner, and his wife do all the buying themselves and these people have good taste!
The only thing that stopped by from pulling out the credit card to purchase their modern looking glasses, plates, and other home stuff is that I still haven't unwrapped half of my engagement presents at home! That and this stuff would be pretty tough for me to transport back to Chicago! But for those of you who live in Austin and are looking for a things to touch up your home you must pay Aviary a visit! And say hello to my new favorite kid, Enzo, for me!
