I really love this place!
They have amazing specials, every day of the week!
Their food is amazing. Our server told us they just got a new chef, which has his own special menu and my fiance and I both ordered from this menu , and we were so glad we did!
But first we ordered the Grilled Calamari, which was very flavorful and grilled to perfection. We also ordered the baked goat cheese, which was just alright. The goat cheese seemed a little bland to me, but the bread and the sauce was delicious!
I ordered the Linguini, which I thought was just delightful! The sauce was perfect! Not too thin, not too thick, and you are given the perfect amount. The sauce/noodle ratio couldn't have been better! The noodles were cooked just right, they weren't too soft or too hard. (i feel like I'm Goldilocks!) The red peppers complimented the sauce perfectly, and every bite made me close my eyes and say "Mmm". It wasn't just an entree, it was experience, I slowly finished it, enjoying and savoring every bite! I hope it makes it way onto the permanent menu!
My fiance ordered the Caprise Burger, which included pesto and brie cheese, I had a bite...it was juicy and full of flavor. The pesto did over power the cheese just a little, but it was still amazing and my fiance enjoyed it very much.
Our server, Claire, was great! She was very friendly, but not that T.G.I. Fridays cheesy fake high pitched voice friendly....she was genuinely kind and took the time to tell us about each special and gave us amazing detail about each beer/entree/desert selection. She was attentive, but still gave us our space. To me, she was the perfect server, we just loved her!
There are plenty of T.V's everywhere, so no matter where you sit, you can catch the big game.
They also had live music, which I thought was a nice touch!
This was our second time here, the first time we went on a Monday at like 11am, the food and service was amazing, but it was empty and I wanted to return again before leaving a review, and I'm glad we did!
This is going to be a regular spot for us, we will be back! :) -

I visited Avenue Ale House this afternoon. After apartment searching in the area, I was quite pleased with the overall experience. I went with a friend at around three in the afternoon, so it wasn't busy at all, but it looks like it would be lively come evening.
The ambiance was great. The environment was clean. The finishing on the tables and bar really matched the atmosphere they clearly sought to maintain. However, the miller banners draped across the ceilings were tacky.
They have an extensive beer list, which was refreshing to see. My friend a Mathilda, and I had a Red Rocket ale. Both were bottled, but bottle/glass service wasn't provided. However, both are good beers.
For lunch my friend had a Western Burger, and I had a Bison Burger. The Western Burger was ordered with Waffle Fries, and everything appeared to be to her liking. It was very dense and filling. My burger was pretty mediocre. I'm a big game fan, and I've been looking for a good bison burger in the area. This was not it. I ordered it medium rare, but it came nothing short of medium well. I would have said something, but the server never really came back to check in. It is prepared with roasted red peppers and a chipolte mayo. The flavors mesh well together to support the bison flavor, but they could be layered better. Also, the burger was overcooked, so it's difficult to provide a decent commentary. My burger came with a side of sweet potato fries. They were good, but under seasoned.
The portions were big. I only finished half of my burger and a handful of my fries, but I took the rest to go. That being said, we were able to feed and drink for less than 20 a person, so pricing was fair - especially since there was enough food to cover two meals.
Service was adequate, but nothing special. Our server greeted us quickly and made sure we had everything we needed. My only complaint would be that she waited until we were nearly finished with our meal to return. I don't remember her name, but she did a decent job.
Overall, I really enjoyed my experience here, and I definitely forsee myself returning in the future. -

Ale House has gone down hill quickly - seems as though they've lost their desire to put quality food on the table along with quality drinks. Had a burger and it was 1) overcooked 2) frozen and 3) not good. I for some odd reason keep going back but I think my last time there was reason enough to remember to stay away until I hear things have gotten better.

There have been some changes at The Avenue Ale House and not for the good. I have been there twice since this place got a new chef. The first time my food was cold and tasteless. The bread pudding they brought me was cold straight from the fridge. The second time was for 2 for 1 apps. Again tasteless food that seemed more like they replaced the chef with a microwave. Both experiences added up to me not making a return trip. So sad because I really like this place. Sometimes change is not for the better.

Avenue Ale House is a great Oak Park bar. It's your typical rustic dark wood pub with a big bar, plenty of tables, a rooftop area, good beer (usually I can only find one or two beers I like at any given bar due to my craft beer snobbiness...AAH has at least ten good ones), the food is always good, and I've never had bad service. Overall, this bar is a win.

After 10 years of serving weekend brunch, we were told recently that they have nixed their brunch menu. Waaaahhh!!!!
This leaves us with even less brunch + bloody mary joints in our neighborhood, especially on Saturdays, since several restaurants in Oak Park only serve brunch on Sundays.Listed in: Idiot's Guide to the Oak Park…

I love that Ale House has a roof top patio, but that's really it though. I typically get the Jamaican burger or the the brat. Both are decent. Actually, I wish more places had patios and brats, but Ale House's versions are nothing to get too excited about.
We have had delivery twice, but each time our food came soggy. Won't do delivery again. It tastes better there. -

I waited 7 minutes to get service sitting at the bar. It was 7:45PM there were two bartenders on duty and it was not busy at all. When I was finally served and complained about the wait the bartender blew me off.
I posted this same complaint on their Facebook page and they just deleted it. Never tried to contact me. Their twitter link on their mobile site went to their web developers twitter page. I tried to email a complaint and it bounced back.
Horrible service. Terribly incompetent. I would not want to put anything in my mouth these people touched. -

Great, local bar and restaurant. One of my Oak Park favorites. Wonderful menu specials all week long. Friendly wait staff and service. AWESOME rooftop bar and dining area. Frozen Sangrias are amazing! If you like BBQ Wings and Sweet Potato Waffle Fries, this is the place! Although I no longer eat red meat, I recommend (for you meat eaters) the Avenue Wrap (skirt steak, grilled peppers & onions, cheddar cheese and ranch dressing). I still remember the taste...delicioso! This is most definitely THE GAME SPOT. Caution: if you're planning on watching ANY major sports game...GET THERE EARLY! Thumbs up on this place!

Every (by every I mean six times) I've ordered a burger here, it is either dry and hard like a hockey puck or red and fleshy and mooing like a cow. And every time I politely ask that they take it back to fix it, the servers acted like I just asked them to lick my shoe. For a neighborhood bar and grill, you oughta get a burger right. Obviously, I've given them ample opportunity to get it right, but still no. The waffle fries are good when cooked right, but not better than Chick-fil-a.
As other reviewers have mentioned, the roof deck is a nice place to hang out in Oak Park on a sunny afternoon to watch a game. But only if you can get the attention of the wait staff. FYI - you might have to flag them down air traffic control style. -

Ugh. The Ale House and I, we have history.
Drinks and food are very pricey... Nothing even close to outstanding when it comes to service... Yeah.
I'm sure ill be back, but only if im meeting a group of friends. What is nice about it is the roofdeck and the size. It is large. Nothing special too though. -
Review from Daina B.
Food is decent. We seem to get pretty mediocre service when we are there. Once no one was even assigned to our table so we waited about 20 min before we even got acknowledged.
Their delivery service is convenient, but the three times that we have ordered something was wrong with the order. Delivery times are accurate and typically arrive a little under an hour from when you order.Listed in: Oak Park

Great place to watch a game and down a few drinks. Solid beer menu organized by beer type and quick little abstracts on their taste profile. Gotta give props to any place that carries Three Floyd's. Job well done.
Kinda wished they would turn the audio on for whatever is on the big screen though. I really didn't come to the Avenue Ale House to hear a cover band play songs by Seal. C'mon... Seal?!?!
Anyway, I would totally go again especially come football season. -
Review from Brian F.
Nice place with several HD tvs for your sports viewing pleasure. I've been here probably a dozen times over the last few years. It's definitely on my lunch circuit, but it's hard to get excited. The food and is good not great and the service is a little slow. During the winter they tend to not heat the place well, so most people are in jackets. During the summer they do have a VERY pleasant rooftop dining area which is the only thing that really sets this place apart. I will continue to go here every now and then.

Avenue Ale house has a very nice roof-top patio. It is my favorite spot for a Friday evening dinner and drink on a summer evening. They have delicious (huge) salads. I usually just get the house salad and add grilled chicken breast. The spinach and artichoke fondue is delicious~ one of my favorites!!! I also enjoy the wraps they offer.
Avenue Ale house also has a great selection of beers and drinks and is great for NFL games. I am looking forward to some warmer weather to enjoy the roof-top patio! -

The roof top was the best part of this restaurant! My coworkers and I were pretty impressed and are planning on having an after work "meet up for drinks" get together here before the summer is over. Our waitress provided great service too! The food was "A-OK" ....not more. I had a veggie burger and it wasn't spectacular. I would like to try something else next time to be fair to see how other items fare. They had some delicious specials, but, they were kind of pricey for lunch. $18-$20 for a lunch entree is a bit too much for me. I would be willing to try one for dinner and then I can update my review regarding the food. However, for ambiance, especially the rooftop, 4 stars!!

Huge improvements in both service and food quality are allowing me to give this spot 4 stars. I had not dined here for several years because I felt the food was dull and uninspired. However, based on my husbands recommendation, I have dined here twice in the last five months. The servers are energetic and very friendly. Additionally, the servers know a lot about the beer list (which is now more interesting and extensive now). The food is delicious and creative now. Nice improvements.
I have always loved the booths here. Nice way to relax and unwind from a long day! -
Review from Pete D.
Still can't go beyond 3 stars, but wanted to say had my kids b-day party here, and they took pretty good care of us. I just wish they would show something besides sports on the umpteen TV's all over the place.
I do want to say that they were nice enough to let my mom buy gift certificates for $100.00 that she could use right there the same day, and those gave an extra 25.00 gift cert. that could be used later. Kudos to whoever came up with that promo for them.
They were featuring a locally made (ok well Wisconsin) beer that was SUPER tasty, big Eddie's Russian Imperial Stout by Leinenkugels and that was a pleasant surprise. Someone who works at this place knows something about beer, likes beer and tries to share that with other beer fans. I am appreciative of that.Listed in: The Places I Go Out

Review from Darcy R.
Yeah, I really just don't like it here. I end up going after work only because it's the best place for those between suburbs and the city. And right off the Eisenhower.
Beer list is good, but IMO, it's kind of expensive. Their wine list is horrible (I know, no surprise).
We get the half price appetizers as an after work happy hour special but it's always so hard to decide because they just don't taste good. The flavors of everything just kind of blend together into the category of bar food. Yes, I understand that I'm in a bar but it really could be fresher tasting. Overall it is greasy food.
Service is usually pretty good so that's a plus. It's the kind of place with waitresses that come by all the time, a little too much. Funny how others describe it as slow. I've never had that problem here.
And maybe it's a suburban thing, but there are always kids here! We were on the rooftop last time and it really was annoying to have kids run around and around your table. Certainly not the bar's fault, just adds to the cons list.
Another con? The bathroom is always a mess.
I'm sure I'll be back because of the location. Pity. -
Review from Meg X.
They're nothing special. If you want a good snack during a movie or ballgame, get the artichoke & spinach dip to go.
I honestly have only been there once, maybe twice, and it just seems like it's full of jerks to me. The clientele, not the staff. Not a very fun place to hang out or frequent often.
I've ordered the house salad from this place. They gave me a quarter of a head of lettuce and some other uncut vegetables. Apparently I was expected to make my own $8 salad. I looked at my plate and glanced across the street at Pan's grocery store and wondered why the hell I spent $8 here on one salad when I could have made four or five salads for $8 at Pan's.
Their food is just OK. The rooftop is nice in the summer but usually pretty crowded, and for some reason it's always full of kids up there.Listed in: My Neighborhood

For a shot in the dark meetup spot with my out of town family, I was impressed with this place. We were there one early Sunday evening, so football was on and I got there early and ordered some artichoke dip to tie me over.
The great place of the location is that it's a half-block from the blue line and strikes me as a place that cater's to us Chicago folk with their robust beer selection and diverse menu options. They had 3 types of cider and a myriad of local craft brews to choose from.
I ordered a burger for dinner, the name of which escapes me, but it was good overall if just a little overcooked. The artichoke dip was a bit disappointing. I would have preferred it be a little creamier as opposed to it's dry consistency.
Service was decent and accomodating. Considering local alternatives, this seems to be a standout place to meet my out of town relatives. -
Review from Rhonda G.
Strolled in here just as the sun was going down and we were seated immediately in front of the windows, with a lovely view of the closed grocery store across the street. Ah, the good life :)
Our waitress started off pretty attentive and then she got pretty scatterbrained and disappeared for a long time. Whatever.
Some other guy brought our food and we were pretty impressed by the quality.
My turkey burger was char grilled perfection with great flavor throughout and the avocado on top complimented it very well. The waffle fries were frozen food aisle mediocrity and if I can offer one piece of advice it would be for the Ale House to consider giving spud a makeover.
An added bonus on this evening was a pretty good coverband. They had great voices, great sound, and the volume wasn't completely overwhelming. Great atmosphere, good food, great evening. Jazz up your potatoes, give the staff a pep talk and you'll be 5 star worthy indeed!Listed in: Jive Turkey, Wait, you drink beer?, burbs the word

Avenue Ale House is one of my favorite spots for a drink and some above-average bar food. It's a great place for lunch, dinner or just to watch a game. I've been there many times and the service has always been fast and friendly. On some nights you can enjoy live music. In the summer you can enjoy a beer on the rooftop garden.
The only reason I didn't give it a five is because during my recent visit, I was a bit disappointed with their salmon. -

The Avenue Ale House has never let us down.
The food ranges from good to really good... always consistent. (The teriyaki wings are a personal favorite.) Service is proficient. Beer selection is good. -- Good place to watch a game or meet friends for dinner.
Parking can be a bit of a pain for those of us too cheap to use the valet. -
Review from Jamie J.
How have I not reviewed the Ale house?! I've only been coming here for 10 years! This is a childhood favorite that I recently revisted with my family.
Dimly lit, bright TVs displaying all the best in sports for the day, and a comforting feel to go witj it.
I noticed the chop salad still on the menu! It happens to be on of my personal favorites. I decided to go with the italian : tomato, feta, basil, and a vinigarette. Tounge pleasing and fresh as I expected! With such a simple salad it's about the ingedients and they were right on! I heard from a family member, who ordered the philly cheesesteak that it was right on point! We also tried the spinach and artichoke dip - an alehouse favorite. Mhmm I was spooning out the left bits... It was that good.
Good ole' american food at the ale house is great for those monday nights for football games.
This place represents the classiness of oak park to the fullest!

I had been to the Avenue Ale House several times before writing this review, and it really is a great place to eat, meet friends and watch a sporting event. I usually go on Saturday afternoons to drink Stellas on special and watch over 10 screens of college football. My usual is the Ale House Burger, which tastes great. They have a wide selection of wraps as well, if burgers aren't your thing. They also serve sweet potato fries, which were cooked very well.
The decor is very fun, with booths and counter height tables, as well as a larger eating area in the back. The bar is exceptional, with a wide selection of beer. However, the best thing about the Avenue Ale House is the rooftop patio, though given that its winter right now, its a feature one looks forward too as the weather improves.
The service was friendly, though sometimes slow. The food was great and very filling. Make sure you check the website out, to see what specials are available that date. The restaurant is very large, so there is no fear of a long wait. However, parking is scarce at times in Oak Park, so plan on searching for metered parking or flipping for the valet service.
All in all, I love the Avenue Ale House as a comfortable pub to go and enjoy a fun evening of sports and camaraderie. -
Review from Becky P.
I was only here once, but I really enjoyed it. We were seeing some live music. It was crowded as hell, but had such a great atmosphere. Killer food too.
Great for going out with a bunch of people for drinks and appetizers. -
Review from Ruthie M.
I think this place is confused about it's personality. I feel like they are trying to go for the casual, laid-back sports bar and grill thing. Then they are serving $25 entrees on the menu. Granted, you can get a burger. For $9. The food isn't impressive. It's ok. It's not bad, just not worth that much money. Especially if you just went there to watch a game, which is what most people want to go there for. The beers on special are still $4! That's not a special....just so you know. I LOVE the rooftop seating and bar. I want to bring friends there to hang out on a nice evening or afternoon, but they all get mad at me because they end up with a $50 bar tab by the end of the night. Then they go huffing and puffing back to the city complaining about our pretentious suburban bars. It's hard enough to get them to come out here in the first place.
Summary: Great atmosphere, ok food, good drinks, expensive. -

This place could be so much better. It's fun to sit on their rooftop deck- nice place. The food is so-so.A little bit better than regular bar food, but could use some help.
The one annoying thing about the Ale House is that the service always seems to be pretty bad. Usually there is nobody standing up front when you walk in and you have to wait. Then you usually have to do a lot of waiting in between drinks, to order, etc. etc.
Seems to be the consensus here- looks like a cute place from the outside but it always seems to disappoint us a little. -

It's kind of... well... lame. There isn't much of a beer selection- they teased me with their name.
The servers are flakey... and there are way too many TVs all over the place. -
Review from Alichia S.
Oak Park, IL
My boyfriend tried this place after recently moving to Oak Park. It has a great feel in the front, but if you get seated behind the bar you kind of feel like you weren't cool enough to be up front. Every table in the back was open but they choose to sit us at a tiny two person table in the very corner right next to the kitchen. When they eventually closed these giant curtains around the kitchen I was relieved, until they turned on the GIANT projection TV. Having a TV in a restaurant is totally fine, except I don't want to watch a medical drama (House) during my meal, especially when the actors are 7 feet tall.
The food was alright, I had the beef brisket sandwich, which I would order again if they would hold off on drowning it in BBQ sauce.
All in all it was alright, the service wasn't super great as I'm pretty sure the table next to us (who got their way after we did) got served first.
I think we'll go back, especially in the summer as their rooftop seems pretty nice. -
Review from Melissa T.

I can't say much more than the stars already state: Ok.
I had a mediocre burger, but the bun was surprisingly good. I would have likely enjoyed my burger more if they could have cooked it right. I also had to resort to drinking out of the water bottle I brought in my purse b/c our server was a little slow. I understand that when it's busy. When it's dead, however, it's annoying.
I liked their pub chips (which I don't even see on the menu anymore). I'm a sucker for fresh chips.
I'd go back if a group of friends wanted to, but I'm not begging anyone to go there anytime soon. -
Review from Al D.
Like others have said, Avenue is great for a beer, but the waitstaff isn't completely with the program.
Avenue has an awesome interior with a cool rooftop patio. The place definitely feels more expensive, or even club-like.
The menu is varied, and includes some nice seafood specials in addition to the burger fare. There's even some interesting appetizer choices such as fondue and calamari.
The beer choices are excellent, and the Avenue is in a great spot, just a few yards away from the Blue line station on a stretch of Oak Park ave that's further south of downtown Oak Park, with a few other foodie options (sushi, bakery, Lalo's, frozen yogurt).
However, my calamari tasted very greasy and over-salted. It was the only calamari dish that I've never been able to finish, and there were less than 10 pieces on my plate.
The waitress also forgot to put in the order of friend's french onion soup, and had to be reminded when our orders arrived without it (and all we did was order beer previously and later just appetizers).
Apart from that, I definitely would return here for drinks, maybe even a burger. The interior and the location are great for the Avenue. -

It's a bar and grill. That's about it. Don't expect more and you'll be fine. Want a beer? You got it. Want fried snacks? Okay. Want a burger? Sure thing. Want to sit outside? Why not.
I'm not sure why we still go here, but we do, because it's completely acceptable. The patio is big and well-meaning. The service is what you would expect. Generally, the servers get you your second beer before you finish the first, but sometimes they don't.
It can lean a little too close to the "family" restaurant occasionally. I don't think beer and toddlers go well together (unless I'm babysitting, then they go together just fine, thank you) and folks are likely to let their younguns wander, scream, drop soda on the floor and generally behave as if they were at Rainforest Cafe. This is less fun than being left alone to drink Bass, eat Spinach Artichoke Dip and watch the White Sox.
So in summation, if you have a choice, go someplace better. If you don't, or you just don't care, Avenue Ale House is fine. -

I have not been to the Ale House in a long long time and I gotta say I enjoyed it.
The Waitstaff was upbeat and very attentive.
Got Some Appetizers (Goat Cheese W/ Toasts and 1/2 rack Ribs) followed by Dessert (The Brownie-Something-or-Other...you know..the Giant Brownie Thing!). The appetizers were memorable, but the Brownie thing stole the show! Damn was that some good 'brownie'! I put it in quotes because it was really more a double-serving of chocolate cake, and it was soft and dee-lish.
The people I was with also ordered salads as their entrees and an order of Pot-Stickers. The Pot Stickers were good! commentatably good!
Also this meal was all had on the Ale House's great rooftop...although it was humid enough today where inside would have been fine too, the rooftop was definitely an enjoyable plus, and a rarity in Oak Park.
Future trips might be in order.
