Seattle, WA
I visited Bellingham about a month ago and Avellino was a highlight of the trip for sure!
Such a cozy little place, it feels like walking into your grandma's living room. The barista was so nice and friendly, and the espresso was perfection.
Also, I had the most delicious scone ever...maple blueberry or something like that. -

Even though Gluten Free is slowly becoming the norm, it still shocks me when a coffee shop carries anything gluten free.
I was pleasantly shocked that this place had large gluten free muffins in flavours that people actually want weather you're GF or not. The texture was decent and palatable to both GF and non GF peeps.
The staff are really awesome and happy. They have a good sense of humour.
I didn't get a chance to buy a drink as I was still nursing the one that I had from the Greyhound station, however, this is on my hit list the next time I am in the area as apparently their hot chocolate is something to talk about. -

Is it me or did Avellino's hire a ton of new people (who are not real coffee savvy) within the last couple of months? Since moving to Bellingham 4-years ago, my boyfriend and I have been loyal (really loyal) to Avellino's and have always been very satisfied with not only their coffee, but their delicious selection of baked goods too.
Recently, however, something has changed...in a not so good way. I went in about three weeks ago searching for a delicious cup of their famous hot chocolate--only to wait at the counter for about 3-minutes until someone surfaced to take my order. I ordered a soy hot chocolate with extra whipped cream (I know...) and was given a dairy hot chocolate with no whip that tasted more like the warm milk my mother used to give me as a child than the creamy hot chocolate I was accustomed to.
I did not completely lose faith in my favorite coffee establishment and went back just days later to order a different drink--only to receive another disappointing flavorless milky coffee beverage with large loose foam bubbles. My boyfriend, another avid Avellino's follower, was also met with a less than perfect Café Rolo that too contained the milk of the cow instead of the requested milk of a the soy bean in addition to lacking the usually coffee kick he was in search for.
If these new employees do not catch on soon, it looks like I will be spending my weekends roaming the streets of Bellingham in search of a new coffee place to get my caffeine fix. I really don't have the time... -

Avellino is a nice little bakery on the hip & happening Railroad Avenue. They make great espresso drinks (like their mocha made with real cocoa) and lots of pastries for the "I need lots of sugar in the morning" crowd. Scones are moister than traditional, almost like a muffin, and you can actually taste the cinnamon in their cinnamon rolls unlike so many others these days. Only issue I had with my cinnamon roll was that there were no raisins or walnuts but the dough was light and tasty. I also scraped off over 2 tablespoons of frosting before I could eat the thing. Clearly this is not a place for dieters. Unless that diet is Gluten Free because they have a very nice selection of gluten free products. Successfully making gluten free pastries is no easy feat and they appear to have mastered several very good recipes. Even on a slow day you should expect to wait for your drink and maybe a table but it will be worth it. Staff is super friendly and not with that "How's your day going?" phoniness. Sitting there reading the complimentary NYT I heard them call several regulars by name. Now isn't that novel?

Oh Avellino I want to like you so much but I just can't.
I'm writing this review based on the past 4 times that I have been at Avellino only to walk out 2 of them. I love your coffee and the atmosphere and the baked goods but what really does it for me at a place is the customer service. Which has not been very good.
This has been my typical and most recent experience: Two people are working the front counter. I watch the barista doing there thing while the cashier is talking to the customer who it seems is a friend. I wait and I wait. I see the cashier look at me not once but 3 times as well as the barista and continue to talk to their friend. No acknowledgement. Even a simple "Hey we will be with you in just a sec" would have sufficed for me ..even if I think it is rude to still keep talking to your friend but I am patient enough. Literrally 5 min past without an acknowledgement...and there was no one behind me!
So I threw my hands up in the air and said "really guys?" and walked out.
I wish this was a one time deal. I have never pulled attitude with anyone in there even when they get to me and say with an attitude "what do you want...." but I'm fed up now.
The customer service has really gone down the tubes there in the past year. Avellino always has had the too cool for school vibe in Bellingham but it was worth it for good coffee and at earlier times a friendly barista. Now I just won't set foot in the place. -

I love coffee from Avellino. I love their lattes and their caramel mocha's. They have yummy cinnamon buns and sugar cookies.

This place has ruined me for coffee/espresso anywhere else!
Three words...Housemade caramel latte! The first time I saw the gooey caramel scooped generously into my latte, I knew my life would never be the same...
Not to mention the gluten-free yummies are pretty good. (They do use a flour mix that has bean flour, and that can have an odd aftertaste...but I have super sensitive taste buds.)
I only wish there was a couple comfy vintage couches and some more dairy free milk options (for those with multiple food allergies). Coconut milk, hazelnut, cashew, or almond milk would be awesome!
But I will love you always Avellino. You had me at the caramel. -

Avellino...definitely my favorite cafe in Bellingham. Why? Delicious, excellently made coffee. Delectable pastries/baked goods. A warm, cozy atmosphere. And finally: friendly, helpful baristas that somehow are all totally hip-looking.
Make sure to try the cinnamon rolls (they'll blow your mind,) breakfast biscuits, the caramel latte. I've never had anything here I didn't like.
Also, every day they have a little deal going on--two punch Tuesdays is one of them, another day is free extra extra shot day. :D
My only complaints are: tables aren't really big enough to spread out while studying, and there aren't quite enough outlets to plug your computer in. Avellino's more of a place to come to chill out, not so much a study spot. -

Avellino's is my vote for best coffeehouse in Bellingham. Great coffee, great food, and great customer service.
There's outside seating, free wireless, and the people watching is first rate. Despite the small amount of table-space, the atmosphere is warm and cozy during the winter - Yet offers a cooler respite during the warmth of summer months.
If you're a coffee "snob," as I am called by friends, and yearn for a Seattle or San Francisco-esque coffeehouse, Avellino's is the place for you! -

Bellingham reportedly has the second most coffe shops per capita in the nation. So, i certainly must review my favorite. Avellino was the first coffee shop I went to upon moving to Bellingham over 6 years ago. They were recommended to me by a coworker. I've been a fan ever since. The reason I'm not giving five stars is that seating is limited. I think some people linger too long working on their laptops. The noise level is high at times too, making conversations or meetings difficult. Avellino is the place for local flavor, and where I can always see friends.

Stopped by on one of my few visits back home for a cup of joe. It was busy, and although the space is small, I really liked it about the place. It kind of reminds me of what a coffee shop would be if it were a dive bar. It's rough around the edges, but makes itself a cozy place to be and serves all the good beverages you could possibly want, and they do it right!
They also have a lovely selection of pastries and baked goods, snacks etc. Their cinnamon roll looked amazing! I would've ordered it, but I had just eaten breakfast. The Staff is really nice and friendly here!1 Previous Review: Show all »

For all of us coffee snobs out there... if ya haven't tried this funky, down-to-earth, teenie-weinee coffee joint, then ya MUST come here!
The coffee is absolute scream-in-your mouth to diefor, anything in that eye-popping, sinful bakery case is hands-down AMAZING... and hey, ya gotta try their very own custom CHAI TEA! I'm so-ooo not kidding when i tell ya that you will NEVER find another chai tea like it on earth! Totally worth the wait for this spicy, liquid miracle to start or end your day right!
"My God I love this town!"

Oh, Avellino, I love your food and ambiance. I love that you have outlets at most of your tables. I love the music you play.
The one thing that breaks my heart is the skill level of the baristas (and please, don't get me wrong; I adore the staff here. Everyone is friendly, helpful, and an absolute delight.) But, if my espresso shot comes out in less than ten seconds, something is not right! Adjust the grind? Tamp harder? Please?
The past few times I've been here I've literally watched my espresso cascade into the shot glasses within 5-9 seconds. A shot of espresso should take about 25, no? It's always a bummer because I miss out on not only the flavor of the espresso, but I just don't get that fantastic caffeine-high that I'm oh, so addicted to.
i keep coming back because of the vibe, though. It's a thoroughly enjoyable place to hang out/get work done. i just wish the baristas were as anal retentive as I am. -

Cozy coffee place to spend a quiet morning in their comfy overstuffed chairs.
Seriously though, this place has a giant old copper espresso machine that makes a killer cappuccino. It's worth it to go just to see this beast in action. -

I really enjoy Avellino, its local, good coffee.
GREAT baked goods...the BEST cream puffs in town and their biscotti and cookies ROCK
Nice staff, no complaints at all!...Really enjoy the atmosphere.
FYI..if your in a super hurry ... might not be the place for you... their service can be a bit slow, but its not due to inattention, its due to them taking the time to make it right, so if they have a line, it can move slowly.Listed in: Top Restaurants

I just tried their new location in the Cordata neighborhood. Located by Whatcom Community College right behind 24hour Fitness. It was their grand opening and the mocha shake was the best!

People, the cinnamon rolls! A mocha and a cinnamon roll from Avellino was my last meal when I moved out of Bellingham, and I dreamed of them the whole time I was away. They also usually have a good selection of gluten-free baked goods. The coffee is gorgeous, and the cafe itself is a nice place to sit and read while you eat - if you can find a table!

I wonder if it was Jessie I ordered my cappuccino from? Hmmm...
Anyway, yes, the place is very cozy and friendly and the barista was extremely patient as I stood there pondering my options. I am just getting used to 'coffee culture' in the pacific NW, and had no idea what the question 'wet or dry?' meant in reference to cappuccino. The barista was not at all condescending in explaining to me that a 'dry' espresso drink is mostly foam, whereas a 'wet' drink will have more steamed milk in it. Now you know. And so do I. I assume Avellino has free wi-fi (isn't that mandated for all coffee shops by Washington state law?), but I didn't see any laptops, so I'm not sure. Oh, and two women were indeed raving about the chai being the best in town. I'll have to try it some other time. One other cool thing for all us NYC/East Coast transplants: they have the NYT there...so I may have to stop in every now and again to get my east coast news fix in addition to my chai latte. -

My friend Jessie works here as one of the baristas (she is phenomenal!) and its location sparks the intrigue of all the local intellectuals and artists. Avellino has amazing espresso and even better pastries. It's quaint environment is reminiscent of Parisian cafes, so bring your lovah and sip down some decadence.

Lovely. Chai takes 5 minutes because they brew it on order, which means you end up with a delicious cup of steamy, spicy chai goodness, with or without honey. If you like to be able to taste the different spices in your chai, this is the place you should go. Their apple pull-aparts, cinnamon rolls, and carrot cake are delicious.

Real espresso like Seattle circa 1985, I second the cream puff comment (wow), and down home funky with nice folks working there. Only problem is they can be pretty busy, but how many great places are slow?
