Let's put it this way. Don't come here if you want a perfect haircut done by a knowledgable stylist. This is a school...you know this before you come here. That being said, you definitely get your money's worth. For $19 with a new student (or a bit more with a student that has some experience), you get a shampoo, haircut, and blow-out. My stylist and I had a bit of a misunderstanding at first, but in the end she cut my hair well, especially since it is so curly and difficult. They have to get everything approved by their supervisor and usually consult as well, so they are not just flying by the seat of ther pants. Due to all this consulting and attention to detail however, haircuts take a long time. Sometimes 2 hours.

There is also a shop in the store that sells good products and the students explain them to you. I really wanted to tip my stylist but they cannot accept any "direct income" so a tip is actually a donation to a charity of their choice. Basically, come here if you want attention and care for a cheap place, (they do styles, color, etc too)...don't come here if you are in a rush.

After years of hopping salons and getting haircuts that ranged from decent to terrible , I decided to roll the dice and try Aveda. I was a little nervous, but my student, Tara F. was so friendly and enthusiastic that instead I began to get excited over what kind of cut to get. She was very attentive, and listened to everything I wanted, although I may not have made much sense, and turned my blabber into reality. It was one of  the best haircuts I have ever gotten, and I also received tips for how to style my hair to give it some volume, something I've always struggled with considering how thin my hair is.

I think it goes without saying that I have gone back to Aveda and Tara for haircuts ever since. I always walk out of Aveda feeling like a different person after Tara's worked her magic, and really can't imagine going anywhere else. She gives my hair incredible blow outs and really gives me exactly what I want every time, and then some. She will take my ideas, add her expertise, and bring my hair to new levels. In fact, sometimes I don't want to go back just because my haircut is still growing out beautifully.

Stumbling into Aveda was a serendipitous event that changed the course of my hair for the better. I definitely recommend Aveda and Tara F. to anyone who wants an amazing haircut accompanied by awesome conversation.

** The rating for the hair-cutting process itself is 2.5 stars. Since Yelp does not do any half stars, I bumped it up to 3 because this institute is so damn inexpensive. **

Since my haircut last year in 2011, my hair grew pretty long and I was tired of it being so dead and boring. I always get very paranoid about cutting my hair because I have this strange, emotional attachment to my hair. But I figured, it's way too long and takes too long to dry after washing it (don't get me started on those blow dryer issues).

Since Aveda is right on Weyburn and I was staying in Los Angeles for spring break, I decided that it was time to just chop off my hair. I timidly made the appointment over the phone and requested that I receive an ADVANCED student because I was not ready or willing to take that chance of having a beginner student cut and style my hair. After repeating the adjective ADVANCED to the receptionist (who reassured me that I would receive what I asked), I breathed a sigh of relief and was actually a little bit excited. I normally go to Allure Salon in Fountain Valley (see my review for them a few pages back) but I wasn't going to be in Orange County and my hair was pulling me down!

Anyway, I arrive promptly at my appointment time and I only had to wait a few minutes before my student arrived. Upon her arrival, I noticed that she was shaky, nervous, and stuttered a little bit as she asked, "Are you Kristina?"

I nodded uneasily and she then led me downstairs - a stuffy, unaesthetically pleasing room where a lot of her classmates were cutting the hair of their clients or practice doll-heads. Hm... she certainly did NOT seem like an advanced student (especially when there was an upstairs section that was very nice and had other students cutting away). I tried not to base her level of expertise on this so I continued on with her.

She washed my hair and massaged my scalp (which did feel nice), and we started talking. Turns out, my suspicions were right: She was a BEGINNER student. Did I happen to mention that I requested an ADVANCED student about oh, say, 3 or 4 times over the phone?

Well, I stayed. I figured that I was already there so how bad could it be? If anything, an expert instructor would come over and fix any problems that I had with my cut.

My friends who also joined me in getting their hair cuts were finished with their cuts in about 30-45 minutes.

My. Hair. Cut. Took. 4. Hours.

YES. 4 hours! I only had about 4-5 inches cut off and some long layers put in...but really? 4 hours? My student's instructor gave her a time limit of 1 hour and 45 minutes. Well, and I do not mean to be rude, she definitely passed that point.

It took so long that she had to have help from another student who actually did very well when she pretty much took over the job. I felt a little remorseful for my student but really, now. This was the reason that I asked for an advanced student.

I'm not a snooty person when it comes to hair cuts. I understand that she tried her best to make everything look great and yes, it did in the end. I left relatively happy.

But...I mean you KNOW it's bad when your own student stylist says, as she's walking you out, "Wow! It's STILL light outside! I thought it would have been super dark by now."

    Yeah.

OMG! I went here for the first time today and the only thing that I can possibly complain about is not trying this place sooner. I got my hair washed, cut and styled along with the complementary aromatherapy, hand and scalp massages and facial for $11. 'Nuff said.

There are so many students here that you can get an appointment whenever is convenient for you - even on the same day.

I also think that getting my hair done by a student was a good thing because she was very energetic and asked many questions to ensure that I got just what I wanted. They have you sign a waiver before you get any treatments and services but do not let that scare you.

I went to Aveda for the first time last week for a hair cut (stylist: "when was the last time you had a hair cut?" me: "uhhhhhh...") and a brow wax.

They called the morning of my appointment to tell me that the stylist they had scheduled me with didn't show up, and they had to reschedule me for a half hour later. Not ideal, but fine. When I arrived, my new stylist was running behind...but they took me pretty quickly anyway, since I was supposed to get started a half hour earlier.

The parking situation in Westwood Village is a little annoying - there are garages with 2 hours of free parking during the day, but I was at Aveda for close to 2.5 hours. (Yes, it will take that long. Just anticipate it and you'll be fine)

This was the first time I had gone to a school for a haircut.

    1) LOVE the budgetness of it, as a student myself.

    2) As someone who is not very good at explaining what I want my hair to look like (but I definitely know it when I see it), I really appreciated that since the stylist was a student, she didn't get that snooty know-it-all attitude that so many stylists I've seen have. She listened to me, she explained really carefully, she checked in with her instructor.

    3) And most importantly - LOVED the haircut. It came out exactly as I was picturing. Since I went so budget on the haircut itself, I splurged on a little travel-size Aveda product :-)

    4) The brow wax ok - it wasn't in a private room, so the person getting his hair shampooed next to me got to hear my whimpers of pain.

I've been to the Aveda Institute twice now, I've had color touch ups and now one hair cut.  I'm really happy with the quality of the cut for the price I spent.  Usually I end up spending over 200 dollars on my hair when visiting my favorite Los Feliz salon, but here I walked out with very similar quality hair cut & color for 55 bucks.  I do miss the expertise of my swanky stylist but for the cost it's really hard to justify!  The students do get lots of help from their instructors, so you won't be left for the dogs.

Yay's:  Friendly staff, great price, clean salon, percentage off of products for your first visit.... AND AND AND a glorious complimentary hand massage after a stylist washes your hair.  Tips usually go to help women's shelters.

Nay's: Not an upscale salon experience (duh it's a school), you might be there longer than a normal salon if you get a newer student.

i came in here to get a hair cut and i made an appointment with tina marie (barbie) she was very helpful and very knowledgeable.

i was very impressed my the student's work inside this salon!

tina gave me a complimentary scalp massage ( very very soothing!!!!) i also got a facial which helped clean my pores and give my skin a softer texture!!!

she also explained to me the various products to help treat my damaged hair and the options i have to help  preserve my color treated hair.

on my way upstairs to the check out station, i told her about my break our spots, and she showed me the various skin products and daily cleansers to help reduce  acne and give your skin a natural glow.

i was so satisfied when i walked out of the salon, i had to make my next appointment within the next 2 weeks for a hair dye!

overall the institute has a lot to offer and is teaching its students very well! tina marie is a perfect example, her customer service skills are great and her performance is phenomenal, and of course her knowledge is very extensive.  people like her are the ones who really show love for their talent!

i would definitely recommend tina marie (barbie)  for any facial or hair treatment!!!

****** this is probably the longest review i have ever written...!  i don't regret coming here!!! :)

I've had my hair cut here three times here before and I've always been really satisfied with the end product.  It does take a long time but that's because they're students and they check with their instructors a lot.  They're all really great because they ask you beforehand exactly what you want and then they repeat it back to you to make sure that everyone is clear with what you want and how they intend to do it.

After they wash your hair, they ask whether you want a mini facial.  It feels pretty nice, so if you have the time and don't mind taking off your makeup, I recommend that you do it!

Throughout the cut, they are very attentive and ask you questions along the way.  It's nice because you have a sense of control of your hair.

I know some other people that didn't like their haircuts from here too much, so I guess it really depends on who you get.  But, like I said, they are all students, so no one is really permanent.

Overall, a good experience, but it does take up a ton of time - but it's definitely cheaper than a cut & style from a normal salon!

I have been coming to Aveda now for going on 2 years and overall have been happy with the quality of the service provided by their students and staff.  This time, though, was not the case.  I came in for a haircut and perm (body wave).  I will start out by saying that my perm turned out lovely, that's why they get 3 stars instead of 1 or 2 for this visit.

It started out well. I came in for a consult the day before my appointment so they could look at my hair and make sure it was suited for a perm (and stick some chemicals behind my ear to make sure my skin and hair don't melt off). Turns out my hair is suited for a perm. "Nice elasticity" and all those fun words were thrown around.  Came back the next day, was taken back immediately, and was told all of the possible side effects of a perm - definitely good to know! Bravo for being so straightforward.

I signed up for a haircut, too, because my ends were getting a little split and dry. I love Aveda haircuts, so assumed I'd be treated to the same level of care and professionalism that I normally am (and this was an experienced student, too, so I was paying the highest pay scale for a haircut).  Nope. Not the case. I asked for the same cut I always get - U shaped in the back, about 1" of layers (so 2 layers, just at the bottom), face-framing in the front, and side swept bangs. I ended up with straight across the back, no layers, no added face-framing strands, and a bangs trim. O, but it was a dry cut, so I totally missed out on the shampoo/conditioner/facial/hand massage/scalp and shoulder massage... So basically I payed over $20 to get a dry trim that wasn't even the style I asked for. And since I was going straight into the perm, there was no blow dry or styling. But I was still charged the full amount for a haircut by an experienced student despite getting none of the Aveda treatment. You can't exactly say, "don't I get a hand massage to go along with this?" Whatever. Moving on.

My issue with the perm was with the actual experience - I loved the way my hair turned out.  When putting in the perm rods, the stylist realized she didn't have enough, so they had to improvise with small perm rods and large rollers. This was fine - I'm all for finding a way around problems - but she had never used this method before so kept having to redo entire sections of my hair because the rods kept getting too loose and falling, and quite frankly it's unprofessional to not have enough of the proper material at your disposal.

During the rinsing of the perm acid solution, my shirt got SOAKED. I'm not talking about a little damp around the neck, I'm talking about SOAKED through from neck to waist, including my bra. The stylist just said, "o you got a little wet, oops." I asked for a dry cape (to at least try to protect my clothing from anymore acid or neutralizer), and was given one with a hole. Whatever, the shirt was already ruined. During the neutralizer, there was liquid dripping all over me, and the stylist held a towel in her hand but didn't do much to actually protect me from the potent solution with the towel. I ended up asking for a towel myself so I could at least spare my eyes from a basic solution burn.

Four hours later, I was finally done. I was wet, I was cold, my skin was still covered in the foul smelling stuff around my neck and forehead (they never wiped it off, even the block was still on my skin), but whatever - I was done and my hair looks good. That's what the 3 stars are for - the end product.

But yes, I will be back. As I said in the beginning, I overall have loved my experiences at Aveda. I think this must have been a rough night.

******Edit: Okay, after I washed my hair (yes, I waited at least 2 days per perm law), the waves 100% came out. I now have a horrible haircut and dry, straight, frizzy hair. WONDERFUL. Two stars it is.

Cut my hair there twice. Both times it took almost 3 hours. Being the cheap person that I am, I was first lured in by the $14 haircut deal. The first haircut turned out great but the second not so much (ended up with really short and uneven bangs that took forever too grow out :(). Plus, now that they don't have that deal anymore, I'm not as motivated to go.

If you have a lot of time on your hands and have a pretty simple haircut that you would like, I would recommend that you try it out.

Loved it! I have been looking for an Aveda salon for quite awhile, since I love their hair dye products! I was a little scared walking in here know its a "school" but nevertheless I was super-happy with the outcome! Sure they are students and it is a learning process for them, but they are very helpful, welcoming, and most importantly patient!! :) Will be back soon to touch-up my roots!! I'd like to first disclose that I don't agree with holding teaching salons to the same level of accountability as the brands they represent. The price is discounted for a reason; they're still students working at a school, not a high-end salon. Personally, I also enjoy frequenting teaching salons whenever I'm in a slump with my hair and wouldn't mind if a cosmetology student makes a mistake and has to correct it through creating a new look altogether. It gives me a new excuse to try something new, but, needless to say, a bit risky. This has happened twice and it happened again during my visit to the Aveda Institute.

I would like to say that I took a chance with a novice student and it came out great, but in all honesty, the person who took down my appointment simply didn't ask which level of expertise I'd be comfortable with cutting my hair. (So if it's your first time, be sure to mention it ASAP if you'd specifically like an Advanced level student, etc.) Thankfully, my experience with the beginner student was a good one.

The lady cutting mine trimmed my bangs way too short. I normally wear them longer and sideswept, but they looked almost comical, being temple-length, set against my wide forehead. I suggested that she just make them into blunt cut bangs above my eyes that taper on the sides. She enthusiastically agreed (probably because she messed up so badly), and artfully made them into the most amazing bangs I've ever had! It was the perfect change; not too drastic, but just the right amount of "different" I needed. Good save!

Pros: Price, creatively remedied mistakes, complimentary services (mini facial, mini massage, makeup touch-up) prior to haircut

Cons: Time (my haircut lasted about 2 hours), the complimentary "massage" was extremely weak/awkward (but it's complimentary, so a minor con)

Again, I'm more lenient since this is a school, so it's a solid 4 stars.

I had been searching for a cheap haircut that wasn't from SuperCuts or the like when I stumbled upon the Aveda Institute on Yelp (thanks once again!). I have relatively thin straight hair and always get a simple trim with long layers and some bangs. I think if I was going to be doing something drastic or changing it up, I would have paid the big bucks.

Anyway, I called in the morning for a 6:30pm appointment and had no problem getting in. I scheduled with a mid-level student ($19) and ended up with a girl named Leah. She was nice and did a good job but wasn't at all talkative. Usually, I like to chat with my stylists but this was actually great because I was exhausted.

She spent a long time lathering my hair in all the luxurious Aveda products (always my favorite part of a haircut) but the real kicker was the complimentary facial. When she asked if I wanted one my response was "I'm sorry... but did you just say complimentary? Who says no to that?". For $19, I wasn't even sure they were going to wash my hair, let alone give me a free facial. It was a basic cleanse, tone, and moisturize but the massage throughout these three things almost sent me to sleep I was so relaxed.

The haircut and blow-dry took a tad long for my taste, but I'd rather her be careful and take her time than rush I suppose. They make sure to check each step of the process with an instructor which is nice reassurance if you're a bit nervous. They were pretty easygoing about everything though, I think taking off 1/2" is hard to mess up.

I was probably in there for a little over an hour and felt totally spa-ed out when I left. Afterwards, she even took me around the product room and showed me what she used and a few other things I might like. Really fun and super helpful.

With a check-in on Yelp I saved $5 bringing my total down to $14 for a shampoo, facial, haircut and blow-dry. I will definitely, definitely be back! Best $14 I've ever spent.

Note: They don't accept tips but they take donations. Also parking's impossible. I suggest the garage across the street.

This is a tough review to write. I've been going to the Aveda Institute for a men's haircut for a few years with mixed results. I'll have an excellent experience one visit and then a poor result the next.

The saving grace for the Aveda Institute always was the cheap price. I could accept a sub-par result by the students knowing that I paid less than at any local barber shop. However, the price for a men's cut has now raised much higher than my other options. I no longer see the benefit for gambling with the outcome of my hair when I can pay a professional barber or stylist to cut it for less.

Other aspect that I put up with for that previous low cost were as follows:

    - Extremely long times in the chair: The past three visits have taken over 2 hours each to do a simple men's hair cut. This is unacceptable, even with the student receiving periodic instructions.

    - Blood money: I learned that if the student cuts my ear and you bleed profusely, I was entitled to a $4 discount on my cut.

    - Ornery students: The past three visits I have encountered unprofessional students who are vocal with their displeasure over their instructors. This makes for an uncomfortable experience, especially when I agree with the instructors assessment of my haircut and then have to deal with a student who huffs, "I'm going to do it MY way" once the instructor has left.

The tipping point for me was when the worst offending student who butchered my hair to spite her instructor (who, incidentally, had clear enough directions for me to perfectly understand) , and then I was charged $25 for having the pleasure of an "experienced" student cutting my hair. This was laughable. I insisted on only paying the new $19 price for a "new" student and wrote a scathing, descriptive review of my experience for the powers that be at the Institute.

I will miss the good experiences at Aveda Institute. The opportunity to work with wide-eyed, enthusiastic young student-stylists when the price was cheap will be lamented. Too many apathetic, bad apples have spoiled this place and since it is no longer a fiscal deal for a men's cut I do not see myself returning.

I have been here a couple of times and honestly, even though they are students working on your hair and you get what you pay for, but they just suck. I had my hair cut yesterday and the girl screwed up my hair, couldn't blend worth $*&t and when I asked the instructor to come in and blend it, she was slightly annoyed by my request and even though she did do it, she also did not do a good job. I have been here a couple of times and each service was for something different, but this last time was the last time.  Just keep in mind, students means inexperience and you get what you pay for.

I went here today for a haircut. Just so you know, this is a training school and not a full-on hoity-toity spa/salon. They sell what seems to be the full line of Aveda products, so if you like their stuff you can come here and get the same stuff for the same price.

I'm a cheapo, so I came here. Compared to the $80 at a full-on Aveda, I have to say the experience is almost exactly the same. I got a great haircut at a good price. I had Stephanie as my stylist, who was very courteous and friendly. She did a great job. The instructors are always around to correct mistakes (if they have any), so you won't be leaving here with a mullet (unless you ask for one).

Went in once about a year ago for a cut and it was ok. Not great.

Went in two weeks ago for some dirty blonde highlights (on my virgen hair!) and had a bad experience. I understand that this is a school and you get what you pay for; however:

I was very specific with what I wanted and showed both the student working on my hair and the supervising instructor the shade/color that I wanted. I also showed them samples of what I did not want, just to be clear. The student initially insisted on a particular shade stating she couldn't find other swatch samples - hello!! WTF??

I was very disappointed with the outcome. My hair was kinda brassy and coppery not blonde. They asked me to return in a week to correct the problem. I did. Big mistake! This time the instructor helped the student  dye my hair (again) and it was horrible! The color turned turned ash! They used a toner and still did not get the color I initially asked me. And now my hair feels like straw when I brush it. It also doesn't even look like highlights, just a mess of 3 different colors.

I'm very disappointed with my experience and will not return.

The parking also sucks. Unless you find a lot that is open.

This was my second time here, this time I just got a color. (Last time a cut and color...but my haircut grew out all weird--but no complaints from me, it is after all a school.)

Aaaaaaanyhow, the coloring took a bit longer than I had anticipated, but again, it is a school, and she was being very through, as I have a lot of hair.

The staff, students, teachers and all were very nice and supportive of one another.

If you want a deal on color and don't mind spending a few hours at a salon this is the place to go.

UPDATE:  (albeit a late one).  I had to get my color corrected. I wound up looking like a calico cat with patches of different colors here and there.
I didn't notice the color differences in the downstairs part of the salon school, and when I got home I thought it was the bathroom lighting that was playing tricks on my eyes.  NOPE...

Now I'm still not totally knocking the school, as it IS a school, but if you have crazy hair like mine, stick with the pros.

I have visited Aveda several times, and even though I get a simple cut, I'm always pleased with how it turns out.  My student stylists have always tried their best, and I appreciate their work; their names are Ingrid, Stephanie, and Fallon (I've had about three other stylists who were good too, but I can't remember their names right now!)  Aveda's lay-flat hair-washing beds are also nice, and that whole room has a very relaxing atmosphere.

I'm only rating Aveda two stars because I've had quite a few problems with the front desk employees, the managers, as well as the stylist instructors.  While most of the Aveda students are quite young, I've found that the most immature and unhelpful people on the floor are the managers and instructors.

I have had two particularly bad experiences with the young Asian male instructor, who is the so-called the 'color pro.'  I can say from personal experience, this guy is NOT a pro!  Not only does he seem more caught up in socializing that instructing, this instructor also is extremely unprofessional and offers terrible color guidance.  The first time I encountered this instructor, he told my student hairstylist to put the absolute WRONG toner in my hair.  Knowing a little about colors/toners myself, I spoke up and suggested something else.  He completely overrode my request, and you know what happened?.... I was back in the Aveda salon two days later for a color fix.  Upon my second encounter with this instructor months later, he really showed his age (I hear he's only 21) and unprofessionalism!  I came back to Aveda for a second round of their awesome deep-line toner, but they seemed to be out of the color I had wanted.  Instead of being upfront, this instructor swore up and down that the color doesn't exist, that the student stylists don't know what they're talking about, and insisted I do a different toner (the one he originally suggested months ago that I hated!)  When I clearly said I didn't like the results of the suggested toner, he acted like he didn't even hear me and told the stylist to go ahead with it.  He kept up this lie that the toner I requested didn't exist for over 30 minutes.  I only figured out he wasn't telling the truth once another instructor came over and unknowingly aired him out, saying that the color in fact DOES exist.  I was SO angry, but wasn't even able to confront him since he jetted out for his break.

When I called Aveda salon the next day to speak with a manager, I was given the run-around by the front desk employees.  I was finally told that the manager Allison would call me back in the next two hours because she was currently busy/out to lunch (the excuse changed mid-explanation.)  Of course, I didn't receive a call-back for three days, and, by this point, I was really fed up with the whole Aveda experience.

I wish I could rate Aveda higher, because the prices are awesome and their color lines are great.  But in reality, you get what you pay for.  Customer service is seriously lacking.

Going into it, I knew this wasn't going to be an easy process. I wanted an a-line cut, which is apparently one of the most difficult haircuts to do. I armed myself with patience. The price and a recommendation from a coworker (with my ideal hair) led me to make my first appointment here.

When I first got there, I had to wait. About 40 minutes. They were super busy (turns out a few of the students had called in sick and their clients were distributed among the remaining students). And once I was in the chair, ready to go, I had to wait for the student to get an instructor to sign off on the release form and give her directions on how to do the cut. That in itself got me nervous!

I was led to the back to get my hair washed and was informed that I get a free facial as part of their holiday specials. Cool, bonus! The facial was great! Super relaxing and rejuvenating. The wash was standard, complete with a head massage :)

The haircut itself also took quite a while. The instructor started it off, talking her way through each layer. Then she let the student take over and she took her time, measuring and re-measuring before cutting. This is a bonus for sure! I would hate to have ended up with a screwed up cut, especially since my hair is short to begin with. She was meticulous!

The instructor came back a few times and helped her along the way. By the end, the student had done about 30% of it and the instructor the rest. They blow dried and styled my hair just like I like it. The cut is wonderful and definitely worth it for $19!

Bottom line: If you have a couple of spare hours on your hands, definitely give them a go!

P.S. My stylist-in-training was Cristin and her instructor was Stacy. Both receive a thumbs up from me.

I have mixed feelings about Aveda, you either strike gold with the stylists or you're left pissed at the cut they gave you.  I've been going here for about 2 years and about 50% of the time, I'm really happy with the cut...but the other 50% I'm just disappointed.  My two favorite stylists are Russell and Paraleese, super nice and very detail-oriented.  These will be the ONLY two that I make appointments with from now on.  Paraleese can handle a flat iron like no other and Russell is perfect at doing exactly what you ask of him, though he needs to work on his punctuality a bit.

A few of the other stylists are unprofessional and lack tact, they should really teach better customer service.  I have long hair and bangs so I usually only go in for a trim just to maintain everything, but the times I have gone in where I needed major work because of a bad haircut at other salons, some of the stylists are not very helpful or good at fixing bad haircuts.  I have definitely had a couple of the stylists try to tell me that I need to just suck it up and chop it off instead of trying to fix what is already there...not very skilled.  I don't recall their names since I rushed out as quickly as possible so as not end my session with horrible stylists.

So suggestion to all of you looking for a haircut, schedule with Russell or Paraleese ONLY if you want to be satisfied...the others are completely unprofessional and rude.

First of all, I had a terrible experience the one time I went here. I only needed to get my bangs trimmed--a quick, easy haircut. I think it was more the fault of my stylist and not Aveda, as the instructor salvaged what she could after the student (I believe her name is Felix) botched my hair. My bangs were cut at least half an inch too short and horribly unevenly, making it look like a 5-year-old cut them. She clearly had no idea what she was doing when she straightened them with a flat iron at the wrong angle, making my hair stick out. Frankly, I could have done a better job with a pair of scissors at home.

I'm giving an extra 2 stars because my friend got her hair cut at the same time and her stylist really knew what she was doing and did a great job, so maybe I'll come back in the future and ask for Aline.

Well here goes, 8.5 hours later I'm home! My appointment was at 10am and I was done by 6:30 pm!! Whew what a day!

When I booked the appointment, I asked for a senior level student (after reading the advice of other reviewers). Unfortunately, I ended up with 2 beginners.

I came in to get my roots done and partial highlights. I ended up with a FULL head of highlights, yikes!  She put in probably more than double the foils required for a partial highlight. I am a brunette and was pretty much a blonde, by the time she was done! Thank goodness there was a very patient and kind instructor who saved the day, and re-did my color. I also had my hair trimmed and  a blow-dry. The trim was fine, and the blow-dry was not bad.

All in all, I think this is a great way to save money if you go in knowing exactly what you want and it's on the simple side, like a trim, a root touch up etc...anything more complicated best not take the chance. You could end up with a fantastic result...or not so much :-)

First - Selenia is the girl!!! WOW!

I used to go to an AI back in my college days when I was low on the funds. The great hours (open until 9 or 10pm) were what attracted me to try out the AI in LA. I was SO glad I did!

I have been here for several services haircut, color, and waxing. All were  at the same level I would receive at a full-price Aveda salon. But, for 1/3 the cost!

When performing a hair service, students and instructors really do a full evaluation of your hair, environment, and life style. I was really impressed by the CARE and knowledge of the staff. I was like, "wait, am I still in California?!?!". No attitude here, just heart!

I was first (by super lucky chance!) booked with Selenia. I have gone back every single time to her. Not only is she as kind as can be, she is extremely knowledgeable! She is a true artist and it shows.

Appointments may take a bit longer than normal, but it is well worth it.

I was SO impressed with my Aveda Institute experience. My work schedule is such that making appointments of any kind in advance is next to impossible. The fact that AI is open late, and I was able to book an appointment for me same day (with like, an hour and a half notice) was great.  I walked in a couple of minutes early and waited maybe 15 minutes or so. I was so fortunate to have Kristen L as my stylist - if you jerks make her impossible to book, I'll fight you :).

A small back story: a few months ago I went to a boutique salon that shall remain nameless with a photo of a haircut I loved. The stylist said my hair wasn't thick enough to really pull it off so she trimmed me up and sent me packing to the tune of a lot more than I paid at Aveda.

Kristen plopped me down in the chair and asked me what I wanted. I hesitantly brought up my experience at the other salon and showed her the picture, which happened to still be on my phone. She enthusiastically agreed that it would be a great look - and that contrary to what the crazy lady at the other salon told me, I have plenty of hair. Kristen was right, and I'm LOVING my new cut.

I really appreciated that she took the time to explain all the products she was using and actually listened to what I had to say. Case in point: I have long hair, and I like it that way. I rarely get hair cuts because stylists ALWAYS take too much off. The script is always the same "I like the length, but I want to even it up and trim up the dry ends." Before I know it 3 or 4 inches are gone. For the first time ever, someone listened and only took off only what was needed to make my hair healthy. Thanks, Kristen!

The only thing I thought was weird was that at the end, a teacher never actually came over and checked my hair. She looked at me from the other end of the salon and signed off on it. The cut is great, so it's no big deal, but it was kind of strange.

The girl at reception (whose name I did not catch), was super knowledgeable about the product, but not at all pushy.  As a first time client you get 20% off your product purchase, so I purchased some finishing products. From looking at my receipt it looks like your stylist gets points for your purchases too (in addition to the points gained from whatever you leave as a tip), so if you're not feelin' the charity of the month, buy yourself some product and everybody wins!

And of course - my hair smells AWESOME. Hurray Aveda Institute!

I get my hair cut exclusively at the Aveda Institute.  It's $19 for a cut, and leaving a tip is optional.  $19 is about what you'd pay at Supercuts (including tip) or another cheapie salon, right?  Although I won't say I always get a perfect cut here, it's always better than what I'd expect from Supercuts.   And sometimes it's MUCH better.  Not to mention the fact that you get a FREE relaxation service (sometimes it's a head and neck massage, and I've also gotten a mini-facial) and wonderful-smelling Aveda products applied to your hair.  :-)

Until I can afford regular salon prices at the "grownup" Aveda, the Aveda Institute is a great lower-price alternative.

So...if you go into Aveda in Westwood knowing what to expect, it's MUCH less likely that you come out feeling unhappy. These are students, most of them are trying really hard, and as a fellow student I don't want to be too critical.

In general, given the cost, I've been pretty satisfied with the stuff I've gotten done here. The services I've gotten at this particular Aveda include: mani, pedi, haircut, full highlights.

MANI: Pretty good. Definitely lasts longer than Village Nails just a block away. The area for doing mani/pedis is kind of bare and not that hospitable, but they always offer you some tea which is nice.

Make sure the student doesn't rush you out to pay though, that happened to me once and it was freaking annoying -- I was trying to grab my bag as the guy was hurrying me and my nails got all messed up :(. Don't let the same happen to you!

PEDI: I happened to go during a promotion where they give you a free bottle of the OPI nail color you choose (sweeeet!) so that was cool. It's nice that they use all Aveda products during the nail services too.

HAIRCUT: This really depends on how picky you are about your hair. I came here for a trim once and it was pretty well done. It grew out kinda funky but hey, I needed the trim and it was inexpensive. What more can you ask for?

HIGHLIGHTS: (I feel kinda bad about this one so I'm not going to count it in determining the stars.) I really didn't want my hair bleached when I went in for highlights so what happened was that the student spent soooo much time putting in the foils and in the end...no color. AT ALL. (I have dark hair so it was probably a lost cause trying to get the color in without bleach, though they did tell me at the start that not bleaching wouldn't be a problem.)

The student clearly felt really, really bad about it and even found me right after I paid to give me a 40% off coupon. So I'll let that one slide.

Pleasantly surprised at how satisfied I was.  Wait time wasn't too bad for an appointment at 3:30, but I had many small wait times so it added up (total about 3 hours overall).  They made sure to offer me water, tea, and any magazines or information on their products while I waited.

Came in for a haircut and had Charles M.  He was very attentive and made sure my hair was to my liking.  I was a bit unsure in the beginning since I never had a non-Asian or male hairdresser before and he was on the quiet side in the beginning.  We went over what I wanted and he provided some feedback when I was unsure since I've had the same hairstyle for almost forever now.  I was apprehensive since the two instructors who came by for quick consults just gave the okay and didn't really do much (quick, to the point, signed off, and walked away).

I received round layers and side-swept bangs with undercuts to add volume to the whole thing.  He explained everything throughout the process and told me that he was using a new technique to add more volume to my hair--and that he was satisfied with the results (I was too).  The bangs wasn't what I was looking for, but after seeing how it frames my face, I like it a lot better than what I had originally in mind.

I was impressed by how meticulous he was.  Just a little bit too slow for me, but it was due to him making sure the lengths were even and that all the cuts were precise and to my liking.  What I liked most was his ability to answer my questions (about my too dry yet too oily hair texture) and he recommended me a couple of products that would help.  Plus, he's amazing at blowdrying hair, he straight blow-dried and added so much volume and fullness--even his instructor was impressed.

When I went to go pay, both women at the register raved that Charles was great and asked if I was satisfied with the service.  Very nice communication and customer service.

Just walked out of the place earlier today and received a lot of compliments already!

$14 for a good haircut + $15 for a hair treatment product (with 20% off, more expensive than the cut!) + free hand massage & advice and tips to maintain and style my hair, I'll take it over the previous Asian ladies I go to for the same boring ol' layered cut.

Would give this place 5 stars had wait time been shorter, but definitely recommend Charles!  Will make sure to schedule with him next time I need a haircut!

My boyfriend wanted a stylish, yet affordable haircut, and as a longtime fan of Aveda products he decided to give the Aveda Institute a try.  I dropped him off and picked him up (finding parking in Westwood is no fun) and was quite impressed when he stepped into my car with his snazzy new haircut, which surprisingly looked much better than his last pricier cut.

Since I'm currently unemployed and was in need of a proper trim at an affordable price, I decided to give the Institute a shot and see if I would be as lucky as he was.

Let me stress, I only wanted a trim.  I'm letting my hair grow out, so was apprehensive about scissor happy students and overly aggressive instructors who love nothing more than to chop chop chop!  After two bad experiences (cut and color) at the Vidal Sassoon Academy in Santa Monica I vowed I would never return to a training facility for any type of hair services.  But the price ($14!) and the quality made me change my mind.  I went in and asked for a trim, and a trim is what I got!  I asked the stylist (unfortunately I don't recall her name) not to take more than an inch off and she actually listened to me without trying to convince me otherwise.

My stylist told me that if I scheduled another appointment while I was there I would receive a complimentary deep conditioning treatment during my next visit.  Thanks Aveda! I'm looking forward to having my hair colored at the Aveda Institute soon and crossing my fingers I will receive another student who is as competent as the first.

I've been coming here for about 2 years now. The good thing about this place is that color and cuts are way cheaper than high end salons. Another good thing is their products are environmentally friendly. Tips are transferred into donations for a charity. The drawback is that if you get a new student, then it can take like 3 hours plus.  Every now and then they have free haircut events which are great! I would've given this place 5 stars, however my last color/cut was not as good.  Most of the students take pride in what they do, however I got a bad student who cut corners from what I normally see and didn't really care to be there.  It's unfortunate that happened.  If I was a first time customer coming in, then I would not come back from that 1 experience.  All the other times coming in were great!

I made an appt for myself and my spouse.  I called and asked how much partial highlights were.  I was told 35.  If I got that and a haircut, I got 10.00 off.  I have shoulder length hair and my spouse has short hair.  We were told that my highlights would be 50 and hers would be 40.00.  Makes no sense since my hair is a lot longer than Julies.  Then, I was told that if I wanted low lights, it would be an extra 10.00 for each extra bowl of color. Huh?  My hair would end up costing more than if I just went to the Aveda salon where I live.  I also wouldnt have to spend 3+ hrs there.  We ended up just getting hair cuts and they came out fine.  I always just get a trim and my partner gets her hair cut short.  I had to give the girl cutting my partners hair some more directions and then it came out nice.  We did get 5.00 off our hair cuts if we bought a products and we also got 20% off products.

I asked for my hair to be blown curly( I thought it would take less time than getting it dried straight).  The woman who did my hair, put so much product in it though, I cant wait to wash it. It feels so crispy.

First time I came here, I had a student who was supposedly almost done with his training program but was ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE! I told him I wanted to cut my hair a certain length and to give me side swept bangs. Not only did he cut my hair shorter than I had asked, he also had no idea how to do side swept bangs! On top of that, he burned me trying to style my hair by holding the blow dryer too close to my scalp. Based on my experience then, I would have only given this place 3 stars.

However, I decided to come back anyway because of the cheap haircuts.  There aren't a whole lot of other places that will give you tea, massage your scalp, give you a mini-facial, wash and condition, cut, and style your hair all for $19.

I was extremely pleased with the stylist I got this time, Andrew W. I asked Andrew to trim my hair and for layers that would give me volume but to keep as much of the length on my hair as possible, and for side swept bangs as well.  He did exactly as I had asked and the results were amazing! The process took 2 hours, which seems long but when you factor in the massage, facial, wash/condition, cut, and style, it makes sense why it takes so long.  Also, I love how he wasn't lazy about layering my hair.  I've noticed many salons will take scissor blades and shear the length of your hair to give you layers, which is the fastest way to get split ends.  Andrew, on the other hand, CUT each layer, which I understand is a longer and tedious process for the hairdresser but it will leave you with healthier hair. Definitely 5 stars for my second experience.

So, 3 stars for my first visit and 5 stars for my second will average to the 4 star rating you see here.

Poof, the gray hairs were gone! Really, not just like that. However 3 hours later I emerged from this Aveda Beauty School with a sweet deal. After having watched TV's Tabitha Salon Takeovers, I was a bit wide eyed.

They ran a cool special around the holidays of 2009. Booked a years worth of permanent color jobs, it usually costs $50 each, was discounted, down to $40. A bargain, I went for it, with the rationale that I will not have to clean up my own dye job.

FYI: If you are going to get your hair colored, wear a top of the same color you want your hair dyed or wear something that won't matter if it gets stained. Also if you wear glasses, be sure to wear the same color frames of the dye you fancy. You can request a student who is more experienced, or farther along in school. Or even a next time with that same student, provided he or she is still enrolled.

I found the courtesy extensive, from the front desk arrival, to the departure. All were gracious, friendly and I liked the way I was treated, even on the phone.

The student Whitney (whose hands were very gentle) started working, "you have enough hair enough for 2 people, good God, it's heavy!" Later she stated, "it's much more than that." Towards the end she declared "you have hair enough for 25 people!" She was conscientious and thorough, kept her word, coming back to check on me when she said she would.

Ebblina, the instructor had a watchful, firm and eagle eye. She made sure the 3 month student Whitney learned how to double drape, so as to not get dye on clients. She had to go and stir up maybe it was 3-4 bowls of dye to make sure she had enough to paint my big head! With a paintbrush, color was deposited painstakingly to the topside and underside of my hair.

After she painted the dye on the hair, I was escorted to the sinks. Now a word about the sinks. I suggest you have them test it thoroughly before you sit down. The sink that I first sat down at, got clogged and we had to transfer to another sink midway, which is not an easy feat when your hair is being processed.

Be sure to let them know about the water temperature too, if it gets too cold or hot. Several students commented on how the pipes have a mind of their own and are affected by other variables.

In the end, my hair broke their electrical circuits. Or rather, the 2 blow dryers used on my hair broke them. Their jaws dropped open, unbelievable. Both rows of their stations, left without power. "It's ok, " I assured them and walked out the door with their apologies and my hair 3/4 dry. If they only knew, I only blow dry my own hair 1 or 2x a year. In my old studio apartment, when I blow dried my hair, it broke the circuits there too.

I went there to get a simple shoulder length haircut. My hairstylist was really friendly and professional even though she is only a student. You can really feel she puts her heart and mind to do her job, which I appreciate very much. Also during the cut, we talked about different things from school to life to travel which is very interesting because you rarely talk so deeply to your hairstylist! The haircut turned out really great and beyond my expectation, all my friends came to me and said they liked it. I am very much sure to go back next time.

One really small and tiny little thing is that while I was waiting to get my haircut, I overheard some staff gathering at the reception counter to gossip about other clients, criticizing her make-up and all that. Well, of course it doesn't affect the outcome of their services. And having worked at a service industry myself, I perfectly know gossiping about customers is just very common. But I still feel it inappropriate to talk so explicitly in front of other customers because you don't want to give them the impression that you will talk at their back once they leave.
    Hope it's helpful.

    My Pedicure Experience

Strike one: I had to reschedule my first appointment because they kept me waiting for over 30 minutes!

Strike two: It took the student fifteen minutes to set up. This occured during my appointment...on my time.

Strike three: Sandals were placed on my feet way too soon and two toes on each foot had to be done over! The girl said, "I really need more practice."  Ya think?

Yes, I realize this is a training center and services take longer, but the prices for manicures and pedicures don't reflect this. The "spa" pedicure is $30.  For $5-10 more I could go to a real spa and for $10 less I could go to a professional nail tech and sit in a massage chair.  The Aveda Institute spa experience consists of soaking your feet in a giant stainless steel mixing bowl and stretching your legs onto a stool that keeps moving away because it's on wheels.  Brilliant!

I came here for a manicure while I was on a business trip. I'm familiar with beauty schools and their model (services take a long time, instructors are always watching and critiquing) but really wanted a manicure before I headed home.

My manicure was good. I'm a nail biter, so I just wanted them buffed out. Terrific job on the manicure. It took just over an hour, but she was pleasant and we chatted. I appreciated the chairs that reclined and the yummy scents added into my service.

As I was checking out I was totally SHOCKED to learn that these poor students don't even get to keep their tips! Is this a Cali thing? Because in Washington, the students earn tips at least. I appreciate that Aveda donates their "tips" to a cause, but seriously! These girls and guys work up to 12 hours a day! Seeing clients! Sheesh. Had I known I would have totally slipped her some cash. Its not right. They should at least walk away from a hard day's work with some $ in their pockets for Starbucks (conveniently located less than a block away!!).

Its a school and you get what you pay for. easy as that.

I had read the reviews so i knew what to expect going into it. I didnt get a great cut, but it was just a trim so who cares. The lady who did me was rough and clumsy and really hurt me when she was washing my hair. As great as the $19.00 haircut was, the blowout was bad ( i could've done better myself) and the whole process took 1 1/2 hours ( for a trim). Definitely not worth my time, next time i'll go to Floyds where its like 5 dollars more.
