Review from Angie C.
Even the Motel 6 is cleaner. We booked a room at Avalon Lodge because the recent reviews on Expedia said there had been improvement after a recent ownership change. Well, I will tell you that the floor looks like it needs a good vacuum and possibly deep cleaning. The decor and the gas fireplace are nice, but the service is really not.
After making reservations, we drove up to Tahoe and rolled in to Avalon Lodge at 3AM on Friday night. There was a sign on the closed front office to call a number. We called twice, and the second time we called someone who sounded he was at a raging party. He let us know where he stowed our room key (out of sight) and wished us a happy stay.
That was our closest encounter to meeting anyone who works at Avalon Lodge. Our room wasn't cleaned the next day, and when we entered the open front office on Sunday at 11AM to check out, we couldn't find a soul to return the key to.
If you're tight on money, this is a good economical stay. I would also bring an air purifier and not walk barefoot in this place. This place would be good if got new staff, not just new owners who redecorated and put thoughtful touches to the room -- which could be cleaner and less dusty. -
Review from Tomomi S.
I should have checked Yelp before booking this place. Same as Angie C., we booked Avalon lodge through Expedia as it was rated as 3 stars and pictures looked pretty nice. But my experience was very disappointing. I hate feeling ripped off after paying $120/night, which sounded like a pretty decent deal in SLT.
Right after we walked in to our room, we had a bad feeling... Old, wet smell of a motel room. Decoration was outdated but that was just the beginning of our bad stay here:
(1) on their website, they clearly say "Daily service providers will make your bed, empty trash containers and vacuum your room" but no daily service was provided, period. We ran out of TP, the one and only trash can provided was small and it was overflown. This is the first room that I paid $120 and wore my flip flops in the room.
(2) the bathroom window didn't have a lock. As we had couple of mountain bikes and PC in the room we felt very "unsafe" with that window and leaving out stuff in the room. We needed to wedged a wooden hanger to locked the window.
(3) bathroom's door handle was gone. One side is completely gone (no handle) and the handle of the other side was barely staying there with one screw.
(4) for some reasons we got the room #20 which is for the handicap person, therefore we didn't have the tub in the bathroom. Shower curtain was not long enough so the bathroom floor was soaking wet after taking shower.
(5) oh, and the 4 holes of the shower curtain was ripped, so it was hanging off the rod
(6) no lid on the toilet and right above it, there's the wall shelf which was wobbly and slightly leaning toward the toilet. Therefore, whatever you put on the shelf was in danger of falling into the toilet. My sunscreen was rolling toward the toilet, but thank goodness, I rescued it before it took the huge dive...
(7) their room key is a regular house key. At the front desk they handed me a single key (like a regular house) with no key holder with room number or anything and our room number was sharpie'd to the key...
(8) fridge was tilted forward so the door only opened about 30 degree.
(9) there was nobody at the front desk when we were checking out. We waited for a while (especially I wanted to make some comments about the room) but nobody was there. According to Expedia 3 star rating system, there is supposed to be 24 hour front desk service... hmm...
One good thing was that they provide free wireless for the guests. Granted, most of the smaller hotels and any coffee shops provide free wireless nowadays.
They need to pay more attention to room maintenance, and update room amenities more often. With broken door handles and ripped shower curtain, it made me wonder if theyeven clean the room after each guest checks out.
Our stay was nothing pleasant or comfortable, but just disappointment after disappointment. This place need major update on everything, or they can either lower the price way down to fit what they offer, or upgrade their room to fit their price. -

I agree with most of kj k.'s review. Wished I could have gotten my money back too but booked on http://hotels.com which gave it at 3.9 out of 5 stars. You really do get what you pay for is the lesson I learned. During the week, it was quiet but the weekend was ridiculously loud. I had 2 complaints - 1 personal and 1 important for most people to take note.
1. There is no central air! It was super hot - in fact they have a thermostat in the room that read 85 degrees. They had the windows open when we checked in but there is no cross breeze! There was a rickety ceiling fan that barely did a thing to cool down the room. Oh and if you are planning on staying in the winter, I'm pretty sure there is only a 1970s electric fireplace to heat up the room.
2. If the "Do Not Disturb" sign is on the door, don't come in!!! We went out for the 2 hours and came back to our bed made and new towels. So either they were watching us to know when we left the room OR they knocked on the door which totally goes against the literal translation of the sign. I just can't stand someone in my room when I'm not there! It is totally an invasion of my privacy. If I wanted them to clean up, I would have removed the sign and hidden my dirty underwear! Geesh! -

I found this place online and was blown away when I saw the price of this awesome room with a huge jacuzzi that my fiance and I could swim in, the website advertised that shopping and casinos were within walking distance, the bed looked comfy, the fireplace looked warm, sounds really great for $119 per night! I thought I was ripping them off!
BUT I was wrong, oh so very wrong. They ripped me off. The room was disgusting. The coffee machine had not been cleaned, the day old filter with coffee, was still in there from the previous guest yet there was fresh coffee packets. (..? make sense? nooo) The glasses were not clean, the shower had brown muck on the walls, the bed was okay not the greatest, and the casinos are walking distance, but not if it's snowing! The jacuzzi, wonderful jacuzzi....was not wonderful! It fell apart. The gold nozzel covers fell off, and we had the unfortunate experience of finding them with our butts. =(
The front desk staff is a teenager. When I asked where the shopping was she assumed because I was wearing a Star Wars t-shirt I couldn't afford nor wanted upscale shopping, (WRONG) her response to my shopping question was "There is shopping down the street but it's all expensive..." (uh...so?) I didn't ask if it were expensive or not.
I would not reccomend this place to anyone! There are plenty of better places to stay in the Tahoe area, hell my car would have been better than this place. -

Looks okay on website pics, but...Scary, dirty, funky, broken, old, loud, hot, smelly. Completely half-assed remodeling job, filthy carpet. Booked through Hotwire and thank goodness they refunded our stay in full. Stayed one heinous, ickish night.
No staff at front desk or contact number during the night. We tried to reach someone because of drunk, loud people sitting in the courtyard area at 2AM!
Found a much much better place nearby for the rest of our stay. -

I love Avalon Lodge. I get their newsletters and they always have kick @$$ deals! Wherever there are jacuzzi tubs in the rooms... I don't usually expect much. I go to Tahoe to gamble/ski (usually just gamble) so I wanna pay a cheap hotel rates to save my money for food and roulette. We really only slept and got ready in the hotel room so for $59 (or less for return customers) per night and a comfy bed; I'm happy!
I like the woodsy feel. Stateline is walkable (even at 30 below). Loved when we went there and it was snowing. Love the in room fireplace. Staff is uber nice. Never had an issue. Maybe rooms could use a bit of updating or an extra deep cleaning... but like I said, clean sheets and a shower and I'm good.
Been here twice during the winter and would go back in a heartbeat.
(If you want 5 star quality room you have to pay 5 star quality price. :-/ ) -

I actually really liked this place. There was a jacuzzi in the room, and although the room was not super large, it was cute and close to the casinos. And I got it at a good rate through the hotel itself, which was awesome.

This place is horrible. Crappy room, the heater didn't work (15 degrees outside...), the fridge didn't work, you have to stand outside in the cold and wake up a begrudged woman just to get help after 10pm. I had to twist their arms just to move us to a different room where the heat actually worked.
Then, they double charged my card for the room. It was impossible to get them on the phone to discuss this, then they told me they had already processed a refund. Four weeks later the refund (of the double charge) appears on my card, however, accompanied by a new triple charge!!! Issue still not resolved.
Crappy place, incompetent owner/management. Ruined what was supposed to be a fun, relaxing visit to Heavenly.
UPDATE:
It is nearly July and my billing issue from February is not resolved. These people continue to ruin my days and I don't even visit them. They refuse to return my phone calls and they haven't refunded the double charge on the room.
DO NOT INVOLVE YOURSELF WITH AVALON LODGE!!! Do not give them your credit card info!1 Previous Review: Show all »

We booked our stay through Ski Heavenly/http://Snow.com website four months in advance. When we got to Avalon Lodge, they did not have our reservation correct, even though we had confirmed the reservation a month before our trip. They gave us a two person room when we had booked for a four person room. When we asked for a refund of the difference, they said the two person rooms and four person rooms were same rate.
We stayed there for three nights, and the rooms were only cleaned once. I went down to the manager's office to get clean towels and let them know, no one had come in to clean it. Nothing came of that.
No one was available at the front desk during the hours listed. When we checked out, we had to call the "emergency number", aka Ben's cellphone, and he instructed us to leave the keys in the room.
The outdoor hot tub was luke warm and dirty. On a plus side, the room's shower was awesome, but the rates were overpriced for what the room was.
Heavenly did not contact us regarding a refund. The first time we called them, the customer service was helpful, but ultimately useless. We called two weeks later after returning home, seeing no refund, and not receiving any calls from either Avalon Lodge or Heavenly. We're still in the process of sorting out the refund. I would not recommend booking hotels through Heavenly's website.
