I called when my car was trapped in my garage. Mark came over to diagnose the problem and he figured it out pretty quickly. I had another company make the repair because Automatic couldn't do it til the next day. Even when Mark knew his company wasn't going to get the business of the repair he had a VERY positive attitude and refused a thank you tip. I would definitely use this company again for service or replacement of my garage door opener.

Had an issue with a brand new Chamberlain garage door opener that I had purchased and installed myself. After several rounds with Chamberlain's tech support, with them sending replacement components and installing them myself without fixing the issue, they offered to send out a technician from Automatic Garage Door. Got attitude from the technician almost from the get-go. Considered the issue an "insignificant" feature and didn't have any suggestions on fixing it. When he realized that this wasn't just a free estimate visit, that Chamberlain was paying for a service call, he became slightly more engaged. He replaced a part (making that the 3rd replacement), proclaimed the problem fixed, with the caveat that if it it didn't fix it, he had nothing further to offer.
Well, it ain't fixed, it's the same as it ever was.
Since the tech made it clear that he had nothing further to offer, I don't see any reason to follow up with them, now or for any future needs.
If you like your service tech's with attitude, call these guys. If not, try elsewhere. -

Q: What do you do when an original spring breaks and door refuses to open?
A: Call AGD, job done same day by an expert technician. I ended up replacing more than a few official parts that were sure to fail.
Getting an appointment is easy. Getting it done right is easy. I like easy and knowing that I'll be problem free.

Not only does my 3/4 horsepower garage door opener make me feel like a princess, it was installed by Automatic Garage Door with the utmost professionalism. The opener has features I did not even know I wanted or needed but now that I have them, I can see why this company only installs the best.
I was 9 months pregnant when we moved into our new home (our first home purchase). Not only was money a concern but i was beyond stressed to get everything done before my baby came. I thought about using Home Depot to install a cheap door opener but decided to do the job right the first time and invest a little bit more money.
Boy, am I glad I did!
Mark (the owner) came out to install our door. He installed the door opener we needed and made recommendations for a new garage door (when we can afford to replace our 80 yr old one). He even help unload a truck of stuff from our move.
The office is super friendly and they do what they say they will do, when they say they will do it. A RARE thing in SF and in construction-home improvement!!! -

Our painter showed us how the lower panels of our old wood garage door were rotting. Automatic Garage Door replaces panels and promptly came out for an estimate.
Owner Mark, who KNOWS the W. side of S.F., showed us how and why we needed a complete new door. He gave us all the options of keeping our original (15+ year-old) door-opening hardware; but for a most competitive price, he showed us we could have all new, ultra-quiet, state of the art hardware - with a battery backup to avoid stress of power outages we sometimes get around here -- and we accepted.
Install a few days later was fantastic. Six hours after the installer started, we had a super-clean garage and a super-quiet new unit functioning flawlessly.
One of the greatest aspects of this business is that it honors its words. There were no "gotchas", no "nickel-and-diming". Everything quoted was done: old-door disassembly and takeaway, new door paint priming, full testing and teaching us how to use the new system, instruction manual and warranty offered and full clean-up of the jobsite. So glad that yelpers guided us to this great business! -

We contacted Mark at Automatic garage door after meeting him at a local Home-Show to replace our 1950s original garage door. Mark was quite familiar with our setup and described exactly how the installation would be. Installer arrived promptly and installation was smooth with no issues. Our installer has been with this company for over 8 years & knew his Stuff!
This company is first class service all the way. You pay a small premium for this type of service but well worth it.
Thanks Mark!

I used Automatic Garage Door a couple of years ago. I had no idea a garage door needs maintenance -- no comments from the peanut gallery! ;-p They came out, fixed the problem, adjusted and oiled everything... I had no idea a garage door could be so quiet! And for a very reasonable price!
Today, I called them because I was sure someone had disconnected something when we were moving stuff around. Our remotes didn't work. Well, well, well: you know that little lock button? Short story even shorter, I called up Automatic Garage Door and they walked me through the steps to unlock it over the phone. Ahhh... the joys of modern living. Thanks, Automatic Garage Door folks! -

The tech from Automatic Garage door arrived on time - a really good thing because the garage door in need of repair was in a rental house I own, and the place was vacant at the time. The tech, Martin, is a very cool dude. I watched him work, asked stupid questions, etc., and learned quite a lot during the process. Not that I'd ever try a repair myself. Martin re-attached a broken cable and then gave the aging door a tune up and a clean bill of health all for an exceptionally reasonable price. Very professional firm. Called, left msg with a receptionist, my call was returned later that day and appointment made for the next since it was not an emergency. The reviews here helped steer me toward AMG - esp after other highly rated companies failed to return my calls, etc.

Fantastic work!!! Marc came out and gave me the estimate. He was thorough, professional and FAIR. I was pleased with his estimate so, I engaged his services.
Martine actually installed the door. He was wonderful. It was a job that took most of the day. Yet, no complaints. Martine did his work to perfection. He said he'd be done by 3 P.M. and lo and behold, he *was*
The door is beautiful, works perfectly and adds beauty and value to the house. These guys are great! The office lady is great too and very efficient. I was pressed for time and she took care of the paper work expeditiously. Kudos to Marc and Company! -

Called to have service for a broken spring. They quoted $485 saying both springs would need to be fixed. Called around to price...
American Garage Door wanted $350
Garage Master quoted $295 for the same service and springs!

I called Auto Garage Door back to say, hey, can't you be competitive?
The clerk said, "others are coming down in price but we are not."
I say good luck to them charging almost double in these crappy economic times...
UPDATE APRIL 2009: A representative wrote to say he was sorry for that exchange and that they are prices more competitively now! -

Couldn't have had a better experience. We have two garages under bedrooms that had minimal clearances. Mark figured out how to modify the rails and provide sound dampening to make it all work. I gave the go-ahead by phone and they were installed the next day. Very professional installation, good workmanship and a quality product. I do a lot of remodeling work and this is one of the best experiences I've had.

I bought my house back in '03, it was your standard small SF house, under 1000 sq ft with 2 pull open garage doors that were water logged and near impossible to open so a body could squeeze in, let alone my car.
I took those off and replace it was a CL manual 4 panel roll up. It was very cheap but the spring hadn't much torque left so it was hard to open, and you could only open from the inside, etc.
So I started looking a couple weeks ago to replace it with a nice new door, home depot and lowes were around 800-1000 for a STANDARD single car garage door. Well, nothing in SF is standard. So I scrapped that, then I found 3 companies and called to get their feedback, namely, can you do it and for how much? Well, Automatic Garage Door came in the highest, so I asked why?
They explained very honestly what I was getting: a CUSTOM door (not 8'x7', rather 8'x6'6") so I needed a specially sized door, plus moldings, as well as many other things that I had overlooked, like infra red sensors -so if the door is closing, it stops if my kids foot or bike gets in the way, a mail slot with a mail bag, a glazed window, vents at the bottom so the door is legal in SF, rubber seal at the bottom, a very quite motor, 2 remotes, a keypad, & a central system.
When I asked the others about their low prices, and my CUSTOM door, the price kept going up as I asked about the things that Automatic Garage Door had put into the estimate (they were going to leave these features out!!), to the point that it was a couple hundred dollars less than their offer. Well, that helped me make my mind up on WHO was my 1st choice. Well, I am happy to say that I made a good choice! Mark sent out his best man, Manolo, who did an outstanding job! He didn't stand around wasting time, he worked very efficiently and provided quality work! I'm very pleased with the final outcome, the door works beautifully, very quiet, and can be accessed from inside and outside via remote, keypad or central system.
Thanks especially to Manolo and to the whole team at Automatic Garage Door,
-Nathan (a happy customer) -

(20090624: A service person came by today, on time. He installed the larger top panel and improved the seal to the floor. I'm quite impressed with the length these folks went to get this done right.)
(20090623: They are supposed to come out tomorrow with a larger top panel.)
I'm hoping these guys come through and I can raise my review. But the communication hasn't been very good following the installation of a door that appears to be too small.
I thought that this would be a quality installation (they charge a bit more than most), but I've been disappointed. The door is too short and narrow. It doesn't quite cover the opening. I've had to use duct tape to keep people from seeing inside. Also, the promised taper of the bottom was not done. I believe this was skipped due to the door being too short
If you believe their advertising in the Diamond Certified Directory and the Good Service Guide, these are good people. I'm hoping that they're just so busy because business is good that they forget to call. -

The owner and staff are great. We had a problem with the door several months after installation; they took care of it quickly and in a very thorough and professional manner. At the end there was a miscommunication and our HOA president was frustrated and angry, but Mark was professional regardless, and resolved the problem. I wholeheartedly recommend these people. It's one thing to praise a company when everything goes without a hitch; these folks deserve five stars even when there's a problem.

I used these guys many years ago and they were quirky but cheap and excellent - they have a new owner and have moved location. The old owner would repair things - NOT THESE GUYS - they want to replace things.
They were nice and responsive, so they got an extra star on my rating even though I dont like their kind of tactics. When the guy arrived, he immediately told me that I had an old unit and that "nobody" could fix it. He then quickly told me everything that was wrong with that type of unit and offered to write me a quote for a new unit. He wrote the quote and then moved into sales mode. The price was almost $700 + tax!
I called another of the top rated companies on here - the guy came right away, got a couple of parts, fixed my old unit, tightened up everything. total cost was under $140!!! Beware of this company unless you like to replace perfectly adequate equipment. -

You know you're in trouble when you know your garage door repairman by first name and have his cell phone number. We've used Automatic Garage Door for years. Someone drove through our door and we had to have the whole thing replaced. They did a great job. They're always friendly. Never make you feel stupid. Can't recommend them enough.

My garage door freaked. It broke a spring, ripped open the metal track for the roller wheels and 4 wheels came out of the track. This left the door hanging by 2 wheels!
When you have a 22 foot, 4 inch steel door hanging by its toenails over your GS400, your blood pressure will go up.
Of course this type of challenge always happens at the most convenient time. NOT! It was the night before we were flying out of SFO for a week.
I called Mark at Automatic Garage Door and left a message.
The door was fixed with 4 new springs and new tracks (with a brace at the junction of straight and curved that had been neglected by original installers -another story). Then they balanced the door with tender loving care.
All this and neither of our cars were even scratched!
Will I use these guys again?
Are you kidding me right now?
I will NEVER use anyone else!
Geez, I wish Mark did roofs, solar panels, furnaces, water heaters and other stuff too, but I will settle for garage doors par excellence. -

When my dad wanted to replace his 50+ year old garage door, we called Automatic Garage Door mostly because it's in the neighborhood. Mark did a wonderful job explaining the options for a new door to my dad and my dad felt very comfortable with his choice in a new door. Mark's office team did a nice job keeping us informed on the doors delivery date. The installation went off without a hitch - the installer hooked up the door to the existing door opener and made the necessary adjustments to that opener so that it works well with the new door.

Mark, the owner, came to do the estimate, on time. The quote was good, and complete. Jodan arrived on time a week later to do the installation, which went perfectly. He swept up the garage after he was done, and came back to explain to me how to program the unit. Mark also helped me get my car out of the garage with the broken door, so it was easier to get to work. None of the other companies offered any advise like that. P.S. Mark likes dogs!

There's nothing more frustrating when the things you use on a daily basis decide to quit working: The coffee maker, washer/dryer, plumbing...get the picture?
This morning the garage door decided to quit working and inside were 5 cars with no way out. I called Mark at Automatic Garage Door in San Francisco and he had someone out in a little more than an hour to repair and service the door. Mark even stopped by to check on the repairs himself and install a few pieces that were missing.
The door works better than ever! It was quiet to begin with and now it's even MORE quiet. Mark also have me some simple directions to keep it running smoothly for a long time to come.
Hats off to the Mark and his crew at Automatic Garage Door in San Francisco! Excellent Work! -

A few months ago, I had a new garage door installed by Automatic Garage Door Compnay. Not long after the installation, one of the glass panels developed what appeared to be a structural crack. I called Mark and he quickly and gracioulsy replaced it for me at no charge. From the start, Mark and his company were professional, courteous, prompt and informative. I would not hesitate to use their services again and highly recommend them. Thank you, Mark!!!

Mark, the owner of Automatic Garage Door, was a miracle worker. So helpful, patient, and sensitive to dealing with opposing views by the co-owners of our building. In the end, we had the company install a metal paneled garage door rather than our previously preferred wood door -- and it was the best decision we could have ever made. Everyone is satisfied, we saved money, and the work was accomplished in amazingly short time. Thank you to Mark and the technicians that did the actual installation!

I loved working with this company. I recently replaced year old doors in my arts and crafts home in the Inner Sunset. The old doors were beautiful but totally impractical and falling apart. Automatic Garage Door installed an overhead carriage door that looked very much like my old doors - except they worked. It was a tricky installation because they had to angle the track to make it work. They were prompt, less expensive than the quote I got from another overhead door company in my neighborhood, friendly and did a beautiful job. Call them if you need a new garage door.
