So I didn't lose my passport, nor did I get in dilly of a pickle and need to find some heavies to bail me out...
I went to the consulate to perform what is called of me as an Australian - I went to cast my vote in the federal election
(PS Australia is a compulsory voting country, you lose a few $00 if a vote is missed).
They don't advertise that you need to be buzzed up to their floor - so either make an appointment or go see the doorman.
The waiting area is full of useful brochures... like extended visit visas, how to do business with AUS, tax packs for those overdue returns. Yet at the end of the day the layout is just like any government office space... small, impersonal, bureaucratic feel. A space that will probably would drive you to tears if you're there for the rescue functions of a consulate.
... but since this is a happy occasion I gladly read the Australian newspaper and waited for the staffer to get the forms I needed.
Overall they were super efficient, and very informative - I am glad the consulate is there for help, but really hope I don't need to go back there soon!
