Stopped by the general store a few times while camping in Capitol Reef. Surprisingly large selection, including some produce. Not cheap, but prices weren't too crazy either.

Our family did not lodge at Austin's Chuckwagon, in fact, but I can definitely say it is a decent store. It was relieving to find this general store in the tiny town of Torrey, without so much as a McDonald's or a QFC, which contained all the basics we needed for our two-night stay. The deli in the back of the building provided delicious sandwiches for dinner, surprisingly well-run by only a single person. If you ever vacation in or near Torrey, you will be glad that Austin's Chuckwagon is there for you.

You're traveling through the desert and have nearly lost all hope. Behing you a long trail of lonely footprints covering miles of sand. You fall to your knees. Why? Why has fate dealt you this cruel hand? Where is there relief? You tell yourself you've just got to get over one more hill. The same promise that has proven itself a lie hill after hill. Still, you push on. You crest the hill. What? What's that? Up ahead.. an oasis? Yes! Saved! It's Austin's Chuckwagon!
That's how I felt on my last trip to Capitol Reef National Park. Well, okay. That's a mighty exaggeration. But I was in desperate need of some ice, and was back in Torrey and Austin's came through. Didn't stay at the hotel, but I did get ice and a lighter (why do I always forget matches?) for my dinner that night.
Truth be told, there are plenty of oases in this desert. Torrey itself has a range of dining options from the burger joints to the sit-down dining. But when it comes to getting your groceries and goods, the general store is about the only game in town. You'll have to go back to Loa to hit a proper grocery store.
The good news is, they haven't let it go to their heads. Prices are actually surprisingly reasonable for a small-town store with a corner on the market. And it's much bigger than you'd think. It seems a shame to call it a convenience store, but it's not quiiiiiite a grocery store. General store sounds about right. Still, get your milk and small selection of produce, canned and packaged goods and some hard goods as well. There's even a deli in the back with hot and cold cases. The hot case was broken on my trip so I don't know what they usually carry, but the service guy was there working on it so it's not just there for decor. I also noticed a small selection of baked goods, but I'm not sure if they're baked on site or at an offsite bakery. Looked more like they came from a panadería, with a definite Mexican slant on the selection. Nummy.
All said and done, this area is remote, but full of hotels and tourist stops that make the image of a lost soul in the desert seem a little distant. But when it's off season and you're out looking for ice so you'll have cold milk in the morning, Austin's looks like palm trees and cool spring in the Sahara.Listed in: Grocery Goodness, Capitol Reef NP April 2011

Apparently this is a motel too....huh! We were just super happy to find a store of some sort in this out of the way, pretty 'middle of nowhere' town.
The store seemed to have most things that you'd need, including a restaurant/deli counter type place in the back, which I didn't check out too closely since I was looking forward to grilling back at camp.
The store itself has a very warm back-woodsy feel. It's a place you'd definitely have distinct memories of if you grew up in the area I'd think.
I'm super glad to know those Torrey-ites aren't going hungry. -

Not closed.
We found the room quite fine for $45. Full facilities including laundry, pool, and a store with lots of that great Utah beer! Convenient to the park and to all the food options Torrey has to offer.
My dad warned me that Torrey is a shithole full of obnoxious tourists and bar-hoppin' Harleys making noise all night. And that's probably so. But, its still the best town to stay in if you want to hike in Capitol Reef the next morning. -

Don't judge a Motel by it's name. I was REALLY surprised. I would definitely recommend this place. GREAT price too! (AAA) Discount. Pool and hot tub and general store are pluses! Great service.

A friend of mine recommended I stay here on my trip through Southern Utah and I am so glad she did! This is such a comfortable, AFFORDABLE, place to stay in a great location. The staff were all friendly and welcoming, the rooms were clean, and there is an outdoor pool! Great surprise after a long day hiking. Free coffee and delicious breakfast treats are available at the general store. The only reason I gave it 4/5 stars and not the full 5 is because my room lacked 3 prong outlets so I couldn't use my computer. But I also chose to stay in an older room attached to the general store. Overall I would highly recommend Austin's Chuckwagon!!
