Yep. Still awesome service, still over the top friendliness, and still they chase me out the door to make sure my tires are "topped off" on air, (thanks, Eric). I cannot recommend this place enough.

Austin, TX
This bike shop is NOT for those who are looking to buy their first road bike. I walked into the shop and the first person I spoke with was nice but busy. As I was waiting, another worker walked out and asked what I was looking for. I was basically told that Specialized and Trek brands were not good bikes and that unless you are willing to spend over $1200 for your first road bike you should not own one.
I walked out and looked at my friend and said "This is Austin's pretentious bike shop."
Maybe they offer some other great services but someone who is looking to buy their first road bike should not go here.
Don't get me wrong, no one was down right rude, they just were not helpful and did not seem to care about people new to riding. -

So I was having hot spots w/ my new Sidi cycling shoes and the insole in the Sidi's is pretty much non existent so I'd heard about Austin Bikes and the product Cycle Soles. So I went in to check it out one day and after talking to Scott at the store I decided to give them a try. I was wary only because I had tried semi custom soles from another store and they were terrible and basically I couldn't use them and lost my money.
So Sol, the owner fitted me personally and let me just say up front...WOW! How awesome are these insoles! No hot spot and they are a custom fit for my foot and shoe. No hot spots and my foot just feels so good now especially on my long rides. Now if they could come up with something for my rear I'd be in great shape ;-0
Seriously great staff, great shop, real cyclists, real people. Highly recommend them, check it! -

Once again the team @ AustinBikes has exceeded my expectations. I've been dealing with knee pain for the last 9 months. Couple MRIs & PT helped, slowly. Read + things about CycleSoles, talked with Sol/Scott/Eric and decided to try 'em. 4 rides with CycleSoles = awesome! I'm now enjoying pain-free rides and improved comfort overall in both knees.
Recently a saddle I purchased online failed (after a few crash-free rides). Even though I didn't buy from AB they were glad to help. I had a new saddle, replaced under warranty, in a week.
They go the extra mile to ensure customer satisfaction & will continue to receive my business. I bring doughnuts, you should too :)2 Previous Reviews: Show all »

I spent a few weeks shopping for a new road bike. I visited several Austin bike shops. Austin Bikes isn't as big as Bicycle Sport Shop or Mellow Johnny's, but the employees are really friendly, enthusiastic, and helpful.
I bought a Scott CR1 from Austin Bikes last week. They spent was must have been an hour and a half fitting me for the bike. I took it for a 35 mile ride last weekend and it felt great.
This week I noticed a small problem with the derailleur adjustment. I walked in to the shop and told them what was going on. They fixed the problem on the spot and tightened up the front hub as well. In five minutes the bike was ready to go.Listed in: Bike Shops

I took my MTB for service and they did a fantastic job. The drivetrain was shifting like new and they cleaned the ENTIRE bike, even the tires!

I was torn with how to chronicle my recent experience with these guys, so I gave 4 stars for which may otherwise have been 3 1/2. On one hand, my 6 year old mtn bike came back shiny and like new for a good price (in the end) and on the other hand I'll have to admit that the "sales" guy was too pushy and I was reminded of how I (lit'l lady)feel when walking into a slow auto mechanic shop "just" to get my oil changed.
I went in there knowing exactly what I wanted maintenanced (which I had to repeat several times) and left feeling irritated and patronized due to the sales guys insistence that I upgrade my components and splurge on the optimal tune-up, assuming I knew nothing about bikes. He even tried the scare tactic that 'I might get stranded on the trail by myself someday if I don't follow his advice' and spend a few hundred $! I eventually told him I was broke in front of several patrons just to get him to shut up. In the end, I got the tune-up that I originally anticipated at a decent price. All I'm saying is beware, especially if you're going in with a budget! -

Austinbikes is my bike shop. Sol and Eric are my bike shop guys. Period! I was drawn in by their approachable, fun personalities, and I kepp going there for superb, uber-FAST service, and just because they are fun to visit. When I first bought my bike there (to replace an old second-hand one), I was not riding very agressively, and they were ok with that. Sol's fits are spot-on everytime. Earlier this year, when I decided it was time to go aero, they gave me the best fit EVER, turning me into the most efficient climber I never thought I could be!
I have visited lots of other shops in Austin, and only go to other certain ones for merch when I have a gift certificate. Austinbikes is my bike shop, and I swear by them. Plus, they are all fun guys! -

Shortly before I left for a long bike tour, I desparately needed a pedal removed that every bike shop in Austin had stripped more and more, and my bike boxed for shipment.
AustinBikes couldn't get the pedal off either, but they did breakdown and box my bike the same day so I could get out of town. And they gave me an Allen wrench to put my crank back on.
Friendly guys, good service, really helped me out when I needed it.Listed in: Leaving Austin

First shop when I got to Austin. I'm glad it was because the infamous half-Asian Scott and silly Sol greeted me as if I already resided in Austin.
Regardless of their awesome shop and bikes, I would have given them five stars just for hanging out there. Check out their website, they're even more ridiculous online.
I still want that obey single speed, dammnit! -

OK, these guys are seriously awesome! I found them through a BuyWithMe coupon for a tune up. My old bike was in pretty rough shape after being neglected for a while, so I wasn't sure if it even should have been tuned at all or just relegated to a craigslist ad. Eric was able to tell me immediately what needed fixing and what it would cost (parts...the labor was included with the tune-up coupon). Reasonable in my mind, although admittedly, I didn't do any price-shopping.
Sam was the tech who did all the work and kept in close contact with me to let me know his suggestions (new tires as my rear tire had a big hole that I didn't know about). I got the bike back yesterday and it's as good as new! They cleaned it, put on the new tires, new brakes and pad, re-cabled it, new gears, cleaned it and basically loved it with the world's longest wheelie down the road (or so Sam brags ;).
Everyone there was very friendly and very helpful. I would definitely recommend Austinbikes for their attention to detail and stellar customer service. It's a local bike shop that deserves your patronage! -

Absolutely STELLAR service. Very small shop with lots of personal attention. Parking is pretty bad, but it is worth it. Don't mistake their laid back approach with poor service.....it is excellent. Sol and Eric both have gone way out of their way to help me out on separate occasions. The carrry some REALLY nice bike lines and are great at bicycle fit.
Even though they are small the ARE the best shop in town.....I've been to them all. -

I stopped by this shop when I was looking at single speeds. Just coming in and talking with them you can find out a lot about them. These guys know and love bikes and it looks like they keep the service dept humming. I didn't ride any since it was raining but I did look at a few of the bikes. The dude wouldn't stop eating while talking to me which was distracting and it did prevent him from coming around the counter and to physically show me and point out pros and cons in my bike niche. Since it was left at that I left too. Not mad just a little disappointed that I couldn't get to know what he had better.
Seems OK and I see lots of high reviews but I didn't get any of that kind of service. I could see stopping by again and seeing what's up but I am in no hurry when I already have great bike shop. Maybe they will be good for you. Check them out. -

We're lucky to have so many great bike shops in Austin, and I hit a bunch of them on a recent search for a new bike. I ended up buying one from Austinbikes and couldn't be happier.
Buying a bike is a pretty personal thing, and anyone who's doing it should definitely try as many as they can before they pick one. It would be pretty silly for me to give Austinbikes five stars just because they had the best bike for me.
No, I'm giving them five stars because they were the friendliest place I stopped. A lot of their business is centered around racing - they even sponsor a local team - but they were helpful and patient with a newbie, and never pushy. Sol, Eric, and Ben were all great.
One awesome thing is that I got a free fit with my bike. They put me up on a trainer and got the seat, stem, and bars adjusted just right. Sol even used a plumb bob to make sure my knees were over the pedals.
They can order anything you need. A couple of friends speak very highly of their repair work, too.
NOTE that as of October 2008, they have MOVED to 1213 W. 5th St. -

Best bike shop in town. PERIOD.
I love these guys. They are really concerned with getting you in something that works for you and your budget. Also, they do awesome repairs and aren't snobby and condescending like many of the shops around town.
Whether you're a pro or a beginner, I ALWAYS recommend this place. -

Austin, Tx is littered with bike shops which is a blessing for anyone who truly enjoys cycling. This bike in particular is hands down one of the best. The minute you walk in you're greeted by the entire staff(which btw are totally awesome guys) and you hear nothing but the sexiest music ever. They'll go out of their way to make you feel at home and serve whatever needs you may have. Sam once went to another bike shop to pick up a piece that I needed for a bike of mine. All the guys there are amazing. Do yourself a favor and stop going to Performance or Sport Shop and make your way to Austin Bikes.
P.S. They have the SEXIEST mechanics ever! -

Just bought a Scott SUB 40 from Austin Bikes. I was totally impressed with the shop.
I'm a complete noob when it comes to bikes. I was a bit intimidated to go to a shop that caters to "serious" riders, but Sol and the staff at Austin Bikes were awesome! No techno-snob attitudes. They were just interested in helping me find a bike that works for me.
Sol took the time to tweak the bike for the two test rides I did, and then did the fitting on the spot. I walked out with a bike that I was stoked about that was totally ready to go, with the confidence that it was setup right for me.
Great shop. Great people. I would absolutely go back. -

The first 'real' bike I bought, was from Austin Bikes when they were still on the Drag.
Everyday I pass where their old shop used to be, it brings a tear to my eye...
Anyway, I'm looking at buying a new Road Bike, and can't think of a better place to buy it from.
Once, my old Hybrid needed the rear wheel true'd. It was bad enough that the bike was un-rideable. So, I took it down to the shop and Sol got to work on it (and ended up staying about 30mins late because of it). But not only that, he adjusted the rear brake (since it was messed up as well), AND put some sprue glue on the tires... While hardly charging me what he should have for their services.
I've been to Mellow's, and a few other shops... But Austin Bikes beats them all, hands down. -

normally bike shops are intimidating to me. if you aren't "in the scene" then they treat you differently.
not at austin bikes. they are so friendly and knowledgeable. i needed a bike to do a triathlon sprint but wasn't ready for a full-on road bike. they helped me pick out the perfect hybrid and spent a good hour fitting it to me specificially. it was about an hour before they were closing for the christmas holidays and i'm sure they were ready to get out of there, but they couldn't have been nicer about it and wanted to make sure the bike was as efficient as it could possibly be.
these guys really love what they do and you can tell. they remember you when you come back in, which is amazing.
i've told everyone i know about them. amazing service. laid back friendly people. just a good overall vibe when you walk in. -

Austinbikes is the best. I bought my Orbea Orca there a couple of years ago and every time I need anything, they provide fantastic, friendly service even if I drop in at the last minute. I have nothing but good things to say about Sol, Eric and the entire team and have referred anyone I know who is looking for a bike, fit, or great mechanics. Thanks guys !

sol and eric rock my world. these dudes are straight shooters, super friendly, and not averse to offering a dude a beer while they check out his wheels. they throw parties, they ride hard and love the sport and their work, and the quality is spot-on. i wish i still lived in austin, but it should say something about my respect for them that they are the only commercial establishment on my list of "people to see in the few days i'm back in town for a visit".
i was pretty surprised to find another fellow behind the wheel when i stopped into their new location on 5th, but he was totally polite, accommodating, and got me out the door in excellent shape for $7 in 5 minutes when i came in with a "this bike i'm borrowing is all fucked up" story.
now, if these dudes would just move to portland, i'd be able to tell the story of a love lost and regained... -

After a semi-frustrating (due to deraileur issues) and very dirty Sunday morning mountain bike ride, I desperately needed a full-blown clean and tune. Sol, the owner, did some pro bono work for me at a race this past summer, so I figured I'd return the favor and drop my bike off with them.
The full clean and tune ran me $95. Plus an extra $20 for some rear hub work. That seemed a little steep, but I figured these guys do quality work, so it's worth it. They also promised I would have it back by Tuesday. I was sold. Plus Eric, the other owner who helped me out, was really nice about everything.
On Monday I got a call saying that after riding it around a bit, Eric realized my headset needed replacing. It's been 4 years since I've had my bike, so I didn't argue. I told him to upgrade that. The total for the clean, tune, hub work, and headset came to $185. That seems reasonable to me, considering I only splurge on bike tunes and upgrades once a year.
When I picked up the bike, I barely recognized it. It looked awesome and rode really smoothly. Eric and the guys at Austinbikes are good guys that do great work. The price may be a little higher than some other bike shops, but you definitely get what you pay for. -

I bought 2 bikes from these guys, didn't really have any problems until my boyfriend and I tried to get fitted for them. Um, let's see. To make it short and simple, I went in to get fitted but no one was there to do it so one of the guys wrote down my info on a napkin and lost it so it never got entered in the system. I go in for the next fitting they scheduled and this other guy starts telling me how they tried to call to reschedule us but didn't have my info (like it was my fault somehow...). The reason they wanted to reschedule? To have a kegger. Yes, I'm serious. Kegger at their business during business hours -- during my fitting. No apology for inconveniencing us. Didn't offer to go ahead and do it anyway since we were there with our bikes. No sorry, can't cut into our kegger time, even though you dropped a grand in our store! The bikes are nice, yeah, but the customer service sucks.

I love these guys. Not only do these guys take their time and pay attention to all the details but they are honest about what I may need. They also don't mind if I say no, which is cool. The best thing about this small shop is that, like Cheers everybody knows your name. Bonus, because of the way they treated my wife when we visited the store for her fit, she has picked up cycling. Thanks guys!

They've moved down to W. 5th Street, which is awesome, because it's so much closer to where I live. Sol is a great mechanic -- very detail-oriented and professional -- as are the other guys working there (sorry can't remember all your names). They identified and fixed an alignment problem on my fixed gear that two other bike shops couldn't figure out (or were too distracted to bother thinking about). I completely trust these guys.

I was referred to Austinbikes by Dr. Z at Advanced Rehab. I was having knee issues and he suggested I get their "pro fit". I recently purchased a used bike and they got me in right away. They spent ample time with me assuring I was in the best position possible on the bike. Super nice guys, very knowlegeable. I am a huge fan of this shop. They carry top of the line equipment and seem to have great stock to chose from.

Major kudos for the guys at Austin Bikes. I checked out their website before I went in the shop and was sure it would be a "boy's club." I could not have been MORE WRONG! The moment I walked through the door, I was greeted with happy and enthusiastic bikes guys. Eric immediately came around, introduced himself and spent time learning about what kind of bike I was interested in. He did not pressure me; he shared tons of information and provided exceptional one-on-one customer service. I did my fair share of research and visited the other bike shops in town and went back without hesitation to buy a bike. The bike fit that Eric did for me was the best! I highly receommend you visit Austin Bikes. You won't regret it.

i love these guys cause they are the real deal! they are bike racers and enthusiasts that are down to earth and cool. i hate going into bike shops and feeling intimidated - groan. they are so friendly and there is always something going on. one time my jogging stroller flatted on Town Lake (and that was my one outlet for the day) and I brought it there in despair - they had it fixed and loaded up for me cheerily in 5 minutes flat. love them!
