I went here for dinner on a Friday night and was pleasantly surprised at both the service and the food. It's rare to find a restaurant where the owner is actively walking around and engaging the patrons in conversation and ensuring that the dining experience is ideal. Top that off with the massive wall chalkboard kids can play with and the numerous big-screen TVs and projector and you've got an awesome place to bring the family or watch a game.

We started off with the Trio of Fries (Parmesan-Truffle, Sweet Potato, and Paprika-Mustard fries) and immediately regretted ordering the appetizer since it was almost enough for an entire meal (and pretty cheap). The sweet potato and parmesan fries were delicious. The paprika fries were a little unevenly seasoned by still good. I'd definitely recommend ordering one if you have 3+ people in your group otherwise you're going to be damaging your appetite.

I ordered the "Spicy Terrier" pizza which is a personal pizza with jalapeños, red onions, grilled chicken, and cheddar. Their personal pizzas are much larger than your standard "personal pizza," so after the appetizer, a single pizza probably would have been enough for two people. They also only cost about $7-8, which is a pretty awesome deal. The jalapeños appeared and tasted as if they were just cut before making my pizza, which is always a big plus in my book. They were flavorful but not overwhelmingly spicy. The pizza as a whole was quite tasty and much more than I could eat by myself. Definitely would recommend splitting one, especially if you get an appetizer or aren't particularly hungry.

Perhaps the clincher for the 5-star review was the response of the staff to an unusual drink refill. The cup they brought back apparently had a small hole in the bottom of it so it was slowly leaking soda all over the table. The owner rushed over and cleaned everything up and then gave us a free dessert (cookies!) for the trouble (when really there was no trouble at all!). The cookies were unexpectedly fancy and presented on a plate garnished with chocolate sauce and literally melted in your mouth. I'd highly recommend checking them out if you aren't already stuffed by time you reach the end of your meal.

I didn't have a chance to check out any of the beer offerings, but it seems like a great place to come watch sports on the big-screen. They appeared to have a decent selection and I'm not one to complain about that for such a family-friendly establishment.  I'll definitely be coming back here in the future.

This is a pretty decent little lunch spot. I was sad to see that El Chile is no longer there, as they have my favorite margarita in Austin (and an awesome happy hour), but I suppose this caters more to the work-lunch crowd around the area.

It kind of has an awkward sports bar feel, but there is a good selection of craft beers on tap, some pizzas, sandwiches and salads. I had the Dancer Sandwich (turkey, sprouts, avocado, tomato and substituted dijon mustard for the garlic mayo). Pretty standard tasting...nothing that I could not have thrown together myself, which is how I feel about most of the sandwiches on the menu. But fine, I'll pay $6.95 for it.

The personal pizzas, all around $7, are much bigger than your standard personal size. Definitely a good deal there. Soup and salad selection is meager and meh.

Wanted something different for lunch. Had the trio of fries, with the Parmesan fries being delicious, the sweet potato fries are good but not for everyone. The paprika fries were good too but I noticed a few of them were overseasoned.

The pizaa is AMAZING!! The crust is flaky, cheesy is delicious. Just hold the olives as they were too salty for my liking. A pizza is about 8 slices and feeds 2 or 3.

The staff were super friendly and very welcoming.

I was craving a gourmet sandwich on fresh sliced bread, so I trusted Yelp with my decision. Boy, did I find what I wanted! My party sampled nearly every type of food they had on the menu and it was all amazing. Extra points for having vegetarian sandwiches that contain more than just cheese. I plan to go back soon to enjoy a beer on their patio with my dogs.

Went there because of the outdoor patio.  We ordered the avacado toast which was not good (literally a piece of bread with guacamole and some sort of cream on it) and we waited 25 minutes for a glass of wine and beer.  We ended up leaving because our server never came by. (Don't worry we left money for the food).  This honestly was probably one of the worst restaurant experiences I have had and I HIGHLY doubt that we will be back.

"Where craft beer meets cafeteria-style pizza."

The kitsch on the walls should have been a red flag but it was 8.45pm and we were looking to try someplace new, so we went in with an open mind.

Honestly Austin Terrier isn't terrible. They have reasonably priced craft beers including dogfish head on tap.

We sampled three pizzas and for three hungry guys it filled us up. The pizzas were big enough that we could have probably shared two pizzas with beer.

This review really is about the pizza.

We expected very thin crust bar style or pastry pizza. We got thin dense pizzas covered with what tasted like canned sauce and bland cheese.   The pizza quality is similar to what you remember from your junior high cafeteria; only with cuter waitresses instead of sassy hair-netted pensioners with chained on glasses and a penchant for anything having a crocheted flower on it.

Honestly, the pizzas from Schlotzskys / Spicy Pickle are better; not that those are bad but the "base pizza" is better.

Other than having a tragic location, and average pizza I think Austin Terrier could really make it.  They have a patio which is inviting, they're dog friendly, (as their name would have you believe) and they have that "we want to be your friendly neighborhood sports bar" vibe with the 100" projection TV.

Bar food doesn't have to be low quality.  In fact, many bars and pubs have been priding themselves on their kitchens lately.  If 'Terrier fixed their pizzas, I'd definitely return on a game night.  Until then, I'm still having awkward flashbacks from junior high.

I'm a friendly person but when I'm with my peeps and we are chatting, drinking our wine/beer and enjoying our food, go away.  No, not you, but the servers and managers and staff.  I want to tell these sweet people that stopping by our table 12 times in an hour might be a bit overkill.  Your friendliness is charming and so is your restaurant, but please chill out. I already like you.

Finally this white elephant location has turned into a cute and cuddly puppy.  A lively terrier that serves gluten free pizza!  I'm tickled pink about the menu and the delicious pizzas. So, why just 3 stars?  Because they gluten-free pizza is an additional $4.95!  Most pizza restaurants charge $2.00.  I don't get the large upcharge.

My "Zilker Pizza" on a gluten free crust with sinach, red onions, marinated
tomatoes, feta, pesto, and black olives was good but it was NOT worth $14.00!  I live 5 minutes away but with the price of GF pizza, I will not be stopping by very often. Even if everyone who works at Austin Terrier hugs me.

Great salad/pizza/sandwich place.  Went there 2 days in a row during my stay in Austin.

The owner was there both times and he was so likable and courteous.  One day there was a small mix-up with my order and he came over and gave me and my friend two warm gooey chocolate chip cookies drizzled with more chocolate.  They really know how to take care of their customers.

Trio of fries was delicious and a great deal(only $5.95! with plenty for everyone to try)- the sweet potato fries & the paprika-mustard ones were thin & crispy and flavorful, but the parmesan-truffle oil were pretty much intoxicating & irresistible and are worth an entire star on their own.  Served with a spicy ketchup & mayo- only wish it had been a fresh, herby aioli instead of a thick plain mayo.

Both the veggie sandwiches were tasty, nothing too special but still well done. The grilled cheese could have used a little sumpin sumpin- it's more of a toasted cheese than a grilled one. The avocado toast was definitely the low point of the meal, weird, and strangely priced at $4.95 for a piece of toast with avocado smeared on it.  But the experience ended on an absolutely yummy note with homemade ice cream sandwiches- golden vanilla ice cream melting between fresh chocolate chip cookies.....mmmmmmm. Will definitely return to try the pizzas and for more ice cream sammies!

My husband and I wound up in the Arboretum area and wanted to grab a bite to eat.  "I'd kind of like pizza," he says.  So I whip out my phone and pull up the Yelp app.  "Ha, ok there's a dog place in the pizza list...funny," I said.  Turns out, it's actually a restaurant that serves pizza.  Go figure.

We've eaten at the last two restaurants that have been in this location - first Mesa Hills Cafe, then El Chile.  I was sad to see Mesa Hill go, but not sad about El Chile...

Anyway, we walked in and were greeted by the owner who was very friendly and attentive.  He went over the specials and some of the most popular items on the menu.  In the end, I wasn't terribly hungry but ordered the Trio of Fries on the appetizer menu (sweet potato, truffle and parmesan, and paprika and mustard) , and the husband ordered The Standard pizza (pepperoni, fontina, and mozzarella) with jalapenos.  I also ordered a glass of wine, and he ordered a Rahr & Sons beer (not sure which variety).  See my pictures of the pizza and fries, but be prepared to drool.

The pizza was delicious.  The crust was crispy and the jalapenos weren't very hot but super flavorful.  I hate things that are hot just for the sake of being hot, but I love the flavor of hot things.  The fries were good, although I realized that I don't really like sweet potato fries after all.  The portions were great with both meals and the prices were reasonable.  My husband's beer was on special for the NCAA tournament so he got a pint glass to keep.  My wine was tasty and it was nice to kick back and chill on a rainy afternoon with some wine and good food.

They have a very large screen tv and were playing whatever game was going on for the NCAA tournament at the time.  We'll definitely be back to try other things on the menu, like sandwiches and more pizza, and watch sports, or maybe sit outside on the deck!

My husband and I have been to Austin Terrier at least 3 times now and have had great experiences every time.  We have eaten sandwiches, fries, salads, and tried their beer selection and have yet to be disappointed.  (When we did have a disappointing fry experience, the staff was quick to correct the situation.)  Last time we visited, we met the owner, Jamie, who is wonderful, welcoming, and really cares about his business!  Check out this place if you get a chance!  Really great atmosphere!

I dunno about this place. I really want to like it because it embodies a lot of things that I like. It's local, it's tucked away in an indiscreet place, it's affordable.

The big downside is that the food is not all that great.  The pizza is just ok, the sandwiches are nothing better than I make at home, and the fries are good but inconsistent.

The owner guy is usually buzzing around and making sure people are enjoying themselves, which is always nice. They have a big chalkboard wall for the kids do draw on, which is pretty awesome.  The have some TV's and a few decent beers to choose from as well.  All that's great, but I really like to go to restaurants where I genuinely enjoy the food, and unfortunately that is not where Austin Terrier excels.

I really can't say anything else about this place. It's certainly worth a try... but I wouldn't set your expectations too high.

Great, casual place in NW Austin with welcoming atmosphere! We were thrilled to find that Austin Terrier could be good for families, as well for a simple date.  The food (tried the veggie pizza and sandwich on a pita) was delicious, and the staff and owner couldn't be nicer.  Good beer and wine selection too.  Although we didn't try it, their ice cream sandwich dessert (made on warm cookies) sounded amazing! Can't wait for our next visit!

I think this place is going through some growing pains.

There are some great beers here, the pizza is a revelation (the Zilker. you need to eat it now) and the atmosphere is laid back and friendly. Although I'm childless, Austin Terrier is very child-friendly, with a cool play area tucked in the corner where children can't roam too much and bright terrier murals on the walls.

I really want to give this place four stars, but I was the victim of an unfortunate service experience. We rolled in around six, and things weren't very crowded. The server was attentive, and we got our food out in a timely manner. And then things went downhill. As the dinner rush started, we realized that there were only 4 people working the floor - three waitresses and the owner or manager, who was pulling double duty of hosting and pre-busing tables. Everyone was busting butt, but service is just a math problem - 4 people cannot handle a dinner rush. We had to wait at least 30 minutes after our meal to complete the paying process. : (

I like the unique dog theme Austin Terrier has.  Boston Terriers dressed like Kiss and the Beatles adorn the walls (a bit cheesy yet fun) and they have a small dog friendly patio in front of the restaurant.

They serve 4 beers on tap and have Texas beers from Rahr and Real Ale. No hard liquor here but they have 2 lengthy wine and beer menus, one for dining in and the other is a take to go menu.

The sandwiches on the food menu are all named after dogs and are served your choice of hot or cold.  All sandwiches are served on your choice of carb: white, wheat or pita.  At the owner's suggestion I got the "Getty" (named after his own dog) on wheat.  The Getty has chicken breast, pesto mayo, marinated tomatoes, spinach and topped with melted provolone and feta cheese.  The wheat bread was fresh and thick. The sandwich was decent in both size and taste but something was lacking, maybe it needed more of a kick like pepper jack instead of provolone.

Besides sandwiches, the menu consists of soups, salads and pizzas.  They have an ample amount of vegetarian options and can have gluten free pizza.

The owner, James, shared they are aiming for a family friendly neighborhood place and that it is.  It is a good place to take a well behaved fur baby out while getting a bite to eat.  The atmosphere is more of one I would feel comfortable meeting a friend for lunch, not really I place I would care to have dinner or a drink at.

Did anyone ever eat at the El Chile at this location?  Horrible.  Over priced and awkwardly flavored.  I was pumped to learn it left and a new restaurant replaced it.  Austin Terrier is a place you might take your kids for lunch or early dinner.  The name does not at all give you any idea of the style of food.

For me, the food was good, but in that I-could-have-made-this-at-home way.  The prices are fair, though, so no big deal.  Mostly a sandwich and pizza joint.  I ordered the turkey and brie sandwich, but I can't remember the name because they're all named after dogs... and not the contents of the sandwich.  The sandwich was good, like I said, but they skimped on the turkey a bit.

The beer selection is strange.  Mostly Rahr, a few Real Ale's and Breckenridge, with a random Chimay thrown in for good measure.  Heavy on the lager and pilsner varieties.  They have wine as well.  After talking to the owner, we learned he doesn't drink much.  Ah... well that explains it.

I might go back for lunch with my dog, but I don't think I'll be coming back for drinks or dinner.  It's a good effort, but with a slogan like "eat-drink-stay"  the "drink" part is questionable.

This little gem is tucked behind Musashino and did not disappoint.  The food was original and outstanding and the owner seemed like a nice guy with a great staff.  I especially liked the TV's in there as it will be great to see games at.  Only improvement is if they added wings to the menu to go with that pizza.

As for the beers, the selection is right on par with Austin originality.  If you are a little bland and dont care for premium beers then the selection is not for you, as noted by previous reviewers.

Great job, cant wait to go back for more!

Tried this place tonight with a friend. We both got sandwiches and split a basket of parmesan truffle fries. The sandwiches were delicious, nothing too fancy, but they hit the spot. I enjoyed the fries more than my friend.

The beer selection is a little strange, as noted by another reviewer, but I liked getting to try a beer I hadn't had before.

We came in a little late, so the place was slow and the atmosphere was very laid back. We enjoyed a basketball game on the TVs while we ate. The decor is very nice; I love the wall murals.

We have been waiting the Austin Terrier, which conveniently located just across the street from our apartment, to open what seems like an eternity.  This lovely dog-friendly establishment finally opened this week and was definitely worth the wait.

On both visits, we were greeted by the owner, who provided his recommendations on both food and beer.  On opening, they seem to be featuring beers from Fort Worth's Rahr & Sons Brewery, which is, perhaps, generally underrepresented in the Austin area.  On our first visit, my wife and I both had pizzas and I happy to say that their quality rivals that of the finest pizza joints in town.  They offer a variety crusts and fresh, unique ingredients for building the pie of your dreams.

On our second, we both enjoyed selection from their extensive and inspired sandwich menu.  Again, we not disappointed.  The sweet potato fries that I got to accompany my Jack (NB: all the dishes are named after dogs!) were crispy and delicious.

We will definitely be back to enjoy their dog-friendly patio, nice selection of craft beers, and tasty foods (including an homemade ice cream sandwich that I have tried yet, but is definitely in my future).  The end.

We will no doubt be regulars. The food is yummy (you gotta try the parmesan truffle fries) and the pries are a steal. Plus the staff, led by owner, Jamie, are incredibly nice and friendly. My husband and I stopped in here a couple days after they opened, we sat at the bar and had a couple beers. The bar staff is friendly and attentive.  The decor is fun and bright, and definitely kid friendly.  I was expecting this place to be primarily a bar--this is more of a restaurant with a bar in it (which I think suits the neighborhood).

The trio of fries was delish (and a very large portion, which we managed to plow through).  I want to try the pizzas (they looked great) and the avocado toast (which Jamie, the owner, gave us the back story on how that menu item originated).

A note on the food - they have several vegetarian options, hooray!  The veg options are well thought out and sound great (ie, not just a salad, or a mushroom covered in cheese...yuck)

They have limited beers on tap, but the selection is not run of the mill.  I had a Rahr Winter Warmer.  Several more options in bottles.  Jamie informed us that beer & wine can be taken to go at a discount, for people that order take out (or just want to avoid a stop at the beer store).

All in all, I like the concept and will definitely be back!  It's a great addition to N. Austin!  Thanks Jamie!

Five guys walked into Austin Terrier...  Here's what we learned:

Skip the sandwiches.  Seriously.  Nothing special.  Two stars at best - unless you're looking for that special gluten-free place, then three.  Meh.

Toasted Avocado Appetizer - eh / meh.  Avocado slices on toast with sour cream drizzled over the top.  Interesting but lacked zip.

Now on to the good stuff.

Beer - Great selection.  Good variety.  Would like to see a few more on tap.  Took a recommendation for "IRON THISTLE" - fantastic Scotch Ale... did not disappoint.

    Salad - Fresh.  Tasty.

Trio of Fries - yeah, this is a serious winner.  Tasty.  Not greasy.  Probably some of the very best sweet potato fries I have had in a while.

And the surprise of the night?  The pizza.  Seriously.  Possibly some of the best I have had in North Austin.  Two of us ordered pizza.  I ordered the 'Zilker Love' on wheat and a friend ordered Capitol Pie.  Both were very good.  The 'Zilker Love' was excellent.  Crispy Crust.  Not Gooey.  Great toppings.  Now, if you're a pizza purist (NY/Chicago/Thin/Thick/whatever), then you already have you favorite place and this won't change your mind.  If you're the type that likes a good pizza with your beer -  where the crust is substantial enough to deliver the toppings but smart enough not to compete with them, then you're in luck.

Went here tonight with some friends.  I really enjoyed the layout and the upbeat vibe.  The owner came and asked us how our meal was and we could really tell he put his heart into his new business.

I'm a pizza guy and let me tell you this pizza was awesome.  I go the Standard (pepperoni) and the crust was great and the sauce they use is even better.  For dessert I had an icecream sandwich.  While the sandwich tasted good, it was too difficult to eat with it being more or less frozen and the cookies were hard.  I would try to make softer cookies so even when the whole thing is frozen the cookie only becomes firm not extremely hard.

Overall I very much enjoyed our visit and intend to come back!

Staff is very friendly, owner stopped by...food was good but a bit spendy for what you get.  Chris B had a good review of it.  I want to go back because they are trying very hard, cost $32 (w/tip) for 2 small sandwiches, 2 cokes, and a big plate of fries.  Will probably go back though to support them.

This place might be okay for kids but from a grown- up perspective, it's really lacking.  Hubby had worst grilled cheese ever - it wasn't grilled just toasted dry.  Sandwiches are all luncheon meats on sliced bread, white or whole wheat. Convient for mom's but nothing you can't make easily at home - and at $2.95 a serving, the french fries are pricey.

Nice to have a dog friendly restaurant on the northside of Austin. Pizza and soup were very good and fresh. Waitress and owner very friendly. Look like they had a nice selection of beer and wine too, but I didn't try any today.

I'm always excited when a new place opens up in the neighborhood, and I wish Austin Terrier much success.  Lots of great reviews so far, but my experience was underwhelming.  Went in for a quick sandwich.  Interior is very nice, staff is pleasant, but it took way too long to get my food.  When it did arrive it was nothing to get excited about, and a small portion to boot.  I'll give it a second chance, but for now I won't be recommending it to my friends.

We live close to this new spot and have been watching and anticipating its opening for some time now. I finally had the chance to take my kiddos tonight and was pleasantly surprised. And they had some serious obstacles to fight before winning us over. Mainly my oldest two kids who were slightly obsessed with the previous space filler and thus very skeptical about new space filler. And by obsessed I mean they walked in and almost broke out into tears because they were so devastated that the old paintings were no longer on the walls. The owner happened to hear this and instead of ignoring this lovely little tirade (which I surely would have done!) he actually came over and told them he still had them in the storage room and would be happy to give them to us if he could find them. And he did just that ! My two girls are now the very proud owners of some very bright Mexican pop art! I might not love the art but the gesture was insanely kind and gracious and they pretty much could do no wrong from that point.

The atmosphere is awesome especially for an adult who wants good beer and good food but still wants to be able to bring the kids without stressing. They have an entire section devoted to kids. A chalkboard wall totally captured my littles attention and there were lots of great books too. The kids meals were good, especially the soup and the pizza. My one complaint on this was the fact that a good sized pizza was the same price as both the basket of chicken nuggets with no fries or a small thing of  soup. Didn't quite seem equal. I had a chopped salad and it was pretty good. Very fresh and great dressing but I added chicken and it was very sparse. For the price I would have definitely expected and liked more chicken. We all loved their take on the ice cream sandwich which was just a whole lot of chocolate goodness and ice cream. The beer selection was very impressive and just gave it a very laid back neighborhood feel without being too kid oriented. Overall they have room to grow on the food front but man they made us feel welcome and we will definitely be back!

A hidden gem that serves fresh, tasty, reasonably priced food.

My hubby and I went to Austin Terrier because he had gone there for lunch a few days before and raved about the pizza.  We've been in search of a good (fresh ingredients, light crust, interesting toppings) pizza place close to Allandale for a while.  Austin Terrier will definitely be our go-to place for pizza.  The atmosphere is casual and the staff is friendly.  The pizzas appear small and light, but are deceptively filling.

Austin Terrier shares a parking lot with a chain pizza place (bold move!) but without a doubt, their pizza takes the prize.

Welcome to the neighborhood, we hope you'll be around for a long time.

Went for the 1st official opening day for lunch. We shared the trio of fries (paprika, truffle, parmesan) which were really good! The roast beef sandwich with bacon, avocado and cheese on wheat was awesome (the "Jack"?). My friend had a 12" pizza that he really enjoyed too. They have great craft beers on tap (which we got a sample of from the owner). I will be back again!

The sandwiches are delicious but the portions are small and way overpriced. A coworker and I had lunch there and spent 16.15 on just 2 sandwiches no chips, no drinks just the sandwiches.

Decent neighborhood place for sandwiches. I went in for dinner, but I think this place would be better for lunch. The hot roast beef sandwich I had was pretty good and I will definitely return.
