Austin Telco has been my Credit Union since 1999.  I joined once I found out they had a partnership w/ my tech firm.  Needless to say, Credit Unions are always a better option than banks since they were originally formed to help service people w/ affordable fees while banks are primarly focused on making revenue and profit.

I've always banked at credit unions ever since I could remember, however, Austin Telco only gets 4 stars out of 5 since I think they still have room for improvement.  My long time credit union (Michigan State - whom I still bank with) makes banking easier for its customers by automating processes and making transactions seemless.  I'll give you some examples:

    -  If you have an out of state check, ATFCU will hold a majority of these funds until they've been cleared w/ the other bank.  MSUFCU stopped doing this over a decade ago.

    - If you need to change your address, ATFCU requires you come into the facility and fill out a form w/ your signature (while MSUFCU allows you to do this over the phone).

    - ATFCU requires you to fill out a deposit / withdrawl slip (while in the office) for every transaction - - which is a duplication of processes (and waste - in my opinion) since the computer also records this transaction.  MSUFCU is paperless.

    - If you want to transfer money (to another ATFCU acct such as your sister's), you're required to do this in the office w/ a signed statement as opposed to just over the phone (like MSUFCU).

    - In order to wire funds (to your own acct at a different banking institution ) you have to call their Accounting Dept before 2pm (to guarantee same day) and provide them w/ the information manually.  There's also a $12 (or more) charge.  MSUFCU has an online "ACH Transfer" where you can do this on their website - FREE of charge.

Overall I still think ATFCU is a great banking institution, and I recommend it to all of my friends since I've had no issues w/ them and their customer service has always been professional and straight forward.  I just wish some of their processes were more seemless and automated.  I mean - - it kind of defeats the purpose if my identify is confirmed on the phone and I'm allowed to ask for account details but that's still not good enough to change my address or transfer funds...?
