Gary upsold me on job, took 9K for half payment of it and then declared bankruptcy after delaying the project for 7 months.
What a waste of time and money. l will be seeking legal damages now.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Linda L.Pflugerville, TX04Dec 12, 2017
This company hires individuals and then doesn't pay them after
services rendered and an agreed payment arrangement. DO NOT do
business with Austin Roofing Contractors (Gary Whillock). Had I known
all the facts about his business practices I would not have agreed to work for him under any circumstances. He has owed me $1000 for accounting services and refuses to pay me. I also learned that he has claims against him with Federal Wage and Hour Board and Texas Workforce Commission Wage and Hour for unpaid wages to other individuals.
I am pursuing payment with Small Claims Court and filed a complaint with Better Business Bureau so other individuals don't fall into the same situation as I have.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Daniel R.Austin, TX02Dec 11, 2018
In 2016, ARC/Gary put a new roof on a house to meet our mortgage company requirements. In order to meet the mortgage company deadline, I paid for some of the work before insurance money arrived. ARC/Gary agreed to refund any overpayment immediately. After several e-mails and phone calls, Gary made multiple promises to repay the overage. He did not honor his pledges. I was forced to litigate (I don't think I'm the only one either). Despite signing a binding agreement to refund my money, over two years later, Gary still hasn't paid me back. Its a shame, because the roofing work seems decent. But I don't trust Gary, and I don't think anyone else should either, he's lied to me too many times.

I've used Austin Roofing Contractors twice; once for a fairly significant job and again for a very minor repair. Both jobs were done competently and professionally.
From my perspective, this vendor does not prioritize jobs of the smaller, standalone variety. However, their quality is admirable for both scales of work. I suspect this is the case for most roofing companies who generally must prioritize larger jobs over smaller ones to maintain healthy margins. This practice may be what frustrated others who have posted unfavorable reviews.
I intend to use them again when the need for roofing work arises.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Judyta M.Austin, TX816Nov 7, 2013
Terrible. Never actually got to work with Gary because of how rude he was on the initial phone call. Belligerence is never necessary, especially if you are in business.

I've had a Gary put in two skylights, and I'm extremely happy with both of them. I had originally planned to only get one, but I liked it so much I called him a couple of months later to do a second one. He has been very accessible via text, and I have enjoyed working with him!

We had lightning strike our house damaging some shingles on the roof. At first Gary came out when he said he would, gave us a reasonable quote and then managed to show a distinct lack of professionalism by not following up with us.
Originally he "tentatively" put us on the schedule last Friday...so I take the day off work to wait for other contractors, who did come on time and complete their job to my satisfaction. I then receive a call on Friday afternoon saying that it's "hard for him to get his guys to come out all the way to southwest Austin on a Friday afternoon'. I'm sorry, I thought that's what running a business and making appointments is supposed to be about. I'd love to tell my employer that I'm going to leave work early because it's too late on a Friday afternoon for me to do my job. He then proceeded to tell me to call him back on "his personal phone" to reschedule for Saturday or Monday. After consulting with my husband and juggling schedules I call him back, leaving a voice mail saying Monday is fine and to please call me back to confirm the appointment as someone will have to make arrangements to be home.
Five days later I get a call back with no apology and a polite but indifferent attempt to reschedule me. When I suggest that I'd have to call him back as we now have to consider other contractors due to his inability to communicate, he succinctly tells me to "go ahead and do that" because apparently it's been "so difficult to schedule our job".
Yes, we only had some minor cosmetic damage and it wasn't going to be a huge pay day for him but have some professional integrity and refer me to someone else if you're too lazy to do the job yourself. Compared to the previous review I got off easy but I consider it a civic duty to at least try to inform potential consumers about the horrible customer service this company offered us.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Pedro A.Manchaca, TX02May 13, 2014
Gary and Austin Roofing Contractors said that work would start 2 weeks after taking half the contract price. Start date came and went, I had to call him to ask where he was at, they couldn't make it he said until another week. I had other work on my roof done prior to re-roof and now my roof was compromised. The next week he calls again and says that he will not be able to come to start work for another week. I couldn't wait with my roof compromised and asked for my money back. To date I still don't have my money. How does this company stay in business? Why can't a service company follow their schedule? Surely they can accurately estimate how long a job will take and FOLLOW THROUGH.

Like I said back then, Pedro, I'm sorry I dropped the ball on communication. I knew that your roof was compromised as is, so I assure you that my team and I moved as quickly as possible to get started on the repairs.
I would never want anyone to wait too long, so again I apologize I didn't communicate with you sooner. It's been over a year since you've written this, but please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any concerns.
Sincerely,
Gary Whillock - Bradford H.Austin, TX0113Mar 22, 2014
I had a great experience with Gary. He repaired a hole in our roof from a fallen tree branch quickly and for a cheap price, and he did the work while we were out of town. He sent pictures of the progress. Super nice guy. Perplexed by some of the other reviews.
