I went to Austin Market Research's website and filled out their questionnaire. Later they got in touch with me and asked me some survey questions. I didn't qualify for anything the first few times. You never know what answer to a random question will qualify you for a focus group study. The study sponsor might want people of a certain age who use a certain phone brand and have premium cable and eat out 3 times a week. You just have to be stoic and go through the brief screening and see if you qualify and get invited. If you don't qualify, you feel let down.
I've done two studies with them. One time I got paid $125 to look at laptop computers. The next time I got paid $75 to talk about my phone service. The focus group study sponsors are looking for your reactions to product concepts and marketing campaigns. You sit around a table in a conference room and discuss a concept with a moderator and the client is anonymous and behind a mirrored wall.
Advantages:

Slight ego bruise when you don't qualify

AMR was one of the better jobs I've ever had as a musician, very flexible and they're pay rate is very competitive. I have to say I miss working and haning out with those guys now that I'm a huge rockstar...

Hmph, and I so thought I was going to get a first on this review.
I'm a client of AMR, we use them to recruit human-type folks to test products and services. AMR is great, always professional, fast, reliable, and friendly. Even when I have to change schedule on them at the last minute they adapt very well.
Now, here's a weird factoid. I pay the folks who come in really well, like $100 to watch TV for 90 minutes and answer some questions. You'd think people would show up. But nooooo, 10-20% of the people never show leaving that money on the table. The ones that are the worst about blowing off this money opportunity? 18-25 year olds. You'd think they'd be motivated. Our world is doomed when the up and coming generation can't focus on $$$.
AMR also sends me really nice gift baskets at Christmas time. For some reason Vodka often ends up in my basket, I'll take it. Then again I throw a ton of money at them every year for their services so fair is fair.
So, if you want to make some good spare cash, sign up with AMR. I always need a bigger participant pool. And like show up. -

Dude! Cash for a bit of your time and your opinion = better than the Tooth Fairy.
But Austin Market Research is even better than that. They are friendly and have interesting groups. Over the years I've gotten paid to drink beer, send texts on my cell phone, and complain about my allergies--all stuff I'd usual *pay* to do.
I see their number on the caller ID and jump to answer it because I know that they won't waste my time and there's a chance that some cash will come my way for an hour or two of talking and eating their snacks. I've hooked up friends with AMR and they all come back to thank me, so I figured it was time to share it with a larger crowd :) -

What a nice surprise! AMR is the best!
After signing up with AMR a couple months ago they called me in for a focus group. For only 2 hours of answering questions about my personal opinions on a certain product, they paid me $100. They provided sandwiches, chips and soda. We started exactly at the time they said and we didn't waste any time. They gave me a courtesy call the day before to remind me of the appointment which was nice. The staff was very friendly and professional. I Highly recommend Austin Market Research if you want some extra dough. -

Wow! What a great way to make few extra dollars! I applied for a group concerning tobacco and tobacco products, which is awesome cause i smoke, and yes i know its bad for you. But I got paid a large amount of money for just giving my opinion, which Ill tell you, ill just do for free! It helped me alot with my financial problems, since the economy is so bad, and all. The people hosting the group were really nice and provided me with meals! So basically I got paid and got a free meal all for my humble opinion. That is way better than any date i've ever been on.
If you are looking for a way to make extra cash, i suggest this place!
