    They were great.

I had purchased some extra RAM off amazon, and upon the Apple Store's recommendation, I brought it to Austin MacWorks to get it installed. I asked if they had a goLocal discount, which they didn't, but they gave me a discount anyways!

The RAM was installed in about 5-10mins (I literally walked to McDonalds next door and back, and they were done). I kept trying to pay the full amount since they didn't actually have a discount through goLocal, but they wouldn't let me.

My computer works great, it was super easy getting it done, and they were really nice.

I spilled coffee on my computer but I was pretty sure the damage was minimal due to how much coffee I spilled and where I spilled it. I called Apple and they told me to take it to Mac Works anyway.

Mac Works told me that they would open it up, clean it out, and let me know what the damage was in 2 - 3 days. They gave me the impression that I really needed to get my computer in there ASAP because they would dry it out for me. Even though I thought my computer was fine, I wanted to be on the safe side so I took it in without turning it on or checking anything out myself.

I called 2 days after I took it in to check on progress and they told me they hadn't touched it yet. I was surprised since I thought they would have opened it up to dry it out immediately since that is why they told me to bring it in right away.

20 minutes after I called to check on it they called back to say it was working just fine and that'll be $48. I knew how much it would cost before I took it in, so that wasn't really a surprise to me. However they certainly made it seem like I would get a lot more out of my $48 than I got. I'm glad my computer is okay, but I just think $48 for less than 20 minutes of work is a little steep especially since they didn't clean it up right away as they led me to believe they would do.

Oh, and they gave it back to me with coffee droplets all over it and a big coffee smear on the screen. Makes me wonder if they actually opened it up and cleaned out the inside. I would never know.

The customer service at the Mac Works up north pales in comparison to the one downtown although it's the same people.  It wreaked of shadiness when I walked in.  I needed my logic board replaced and I wanted to back up my harddrive.  They tried to say they would give me a way deal compared to the Apple store.  He asked me what Apple was going to charge me and I told him and then he said he'd do it for less on replacing the logic board but then just added more to the cost of backing up my hard drive and it was the same price.  I went with it to save the drive back to the Apple store.

Then I get my lap top back after 10 days and it punks out on me 2 days later so I go back as I'm within my 90 day warranty.  I walk in and tell them the problem and ask them if they can test other things like the battery, charger, etc to rule out those problems.  They say it'll cost $60 and they can rush diagnose it.  Really?  They are just standing around,  I just drop 500+, and you can't even plug it in and pretend like you know how to do your job?  Finally I complain about how I should have gone somewhere else & one guy decides to stop playing a computer game behind the desk and hook it up.

They then say they will call me when it's ready and they fail to call me for 4 to 5 weeks so I call them and they say it's been there for some time and they left multiple messages on my phone.  Basically it ate up most of my warranty time.   Maybe my phone is broken and not receiving some messages?

Needless to say I'm not going back.

    UPDATE 3/1/12
    - So my computer finally gave out so I took it back and told them that I knew there was a problem all along and that now my warranty was gone because they had kept it for that extended period of time.

They made up for everything by saying they would send it back to Apple.  I said on the condition that they have to tell Apple that there is something wrong with it and that they won't let them return it without fixing.  They did just that and even Apple tried to return, saying there was nothing wrong with it, but they told them they have to fix it.

So now it's fixed and I got my money's worth from the first time I paid for repairs!

I'm now going to sell my 2 laptops and by a new one from Mac Works.  They showed me that they care about their customers and really stuck with me and making my experience positive in the end.

That is deserving of bumping them from 1 star to 4!  And it keeps me as a customer.

Here is a new and interesting way to upset your customers...put a password on their computer and neglect to tell them about it.

Austin MacWorks always has a smile on their faces.

Oh, maybe because I just bought a computer for three grand.

Doesn't matter.  The store is great, the staff in knowledgeable and helpful, and what? it's right around the corner from me.

Right now, I cannot think of a better feeling than carrying the biggest, newest Mac out to my car, and that Austin MacWorks helped me do it.

    Thank you.

Here is the remainder of my conversation with them.  I have worked on Macs before but simply did not have TIME to in this instance and was thus hoping they would.  I do not believe they have any integrity.  Period.

    Thank you for your response.

The computer was working just fine.  There was no damage to the logic board.  The hard drive is plugged in, I checked that when I got it back from you, but it is missing the brace that holds it still.  So it is rattling inside the computer.  I can migrate the data, that was not the issue.  The issue was that you told my friend that I would not be able to migrate the data.

The computer was given to you in functional condition and returned to me non-functional.  That is really all that matters.

        Hi Srini,

Thank you for your rapid response.  You are correct that Ramana tried to reach me twice today.   I was in court first, then in the office until  a little while ago and have no access to a computer until I get home.  My breaks are approximately 5 minutes each in so I was not able to call back as my commute time was occupied on the phone.  So I apologize for that.

There really isn't much we can talk about on the phone.  I have a Macbook that worked before I gave it to you all, and now does not work.  I am awaiting a refurb from Apple and that has not shipped yet.

        Refurbished MacBook Pro 2.3GHz dual-core Intel i5
        Ships:  Dec 1

I had assumed when I placed the order that I would be able to use the Macbook I'd brought to you in the meantime, just not as a laptop.  Since that is not the case, there are numerous things I cannot do as a result.  I run a small business, just as you do, and may have to see if I can rent a computer to plug my hard drive into until the new computer arrives.

I'm not sure there's anything to discuss unless you have some way to make the computer I brought you in sticky but working condition work again.
I do not care about having paid you for "diagnostics", I just care about the fact that I brought in something that worked and was left with something that doesn't.  Clearly I just should have held on to the computer and lived with the sticky keys as I'd be in better shape than I am now.

I will wait for whatever explanation you give me in writing.  As I said, it really doesn't matter because the bottom line is that you have left me with a dead machine.

I do appreciate your business partner's attempts to reach me.

My fiancé whipped into the MacWorks parking lot last weekend immediately after I mentioned that my iphone was about to die and that I didn't have a car charger.

We walked into the store and were pleasantly greeted and told the salesperson that I needed a car charger.  I think the car charger & the cord were around $12 each, but he said he'd sell them to both for $18...awesome!! (As a side note -- we also checked the AT&T store next door & their chargers were $29.99). Unfortunately, the car charger wouldn't work with my phone :( although it did work w/ the salesperson's iphone.  When I walked back in they let me try a new charger & cord to see if that was the problem & when that didn't work they promptly refunded me and apologized.  It was actually kind of sad that I needed a refund b/c I actually WANTED to spend money in there because of the great service we received.

Austin MacWorks, you are my heroes!

A few weeks ago, my 2 yr old MacBook Pro experienced the black screen of death.  It was working great, and all of the sudden, the screen went blank, never to return.  Thinking that my Apple Care would have taken care of the problem under warranty, I made an appointment at the Apple Store.  Well, they took one look at a small dent in the top of my computer and a slight bowing in the key board, and told me that Apple would not be able to fix the problem under warranty b/c there was physical damage to the computer that "could have" been the reason for the problem I was experiencing.  They didn't take it apart, they didn't even attempt to diagnose the problem, they just told me that it would be anywhere from $750-$1300 to fix my computer b/c they would have to replace all the afflicted parts with new ones.

They gave me a list of certified Apple repair retailers around Austin, and said that one of these might be able to help fix the problem less expensively.  I asked for a recommendation of which one was the best, but the Mac "genius" said he could not recommend any, but gave me a little "wink, wink" and pointed to Austin MacWorks.

So I went into Austin MacWorks that afternoon...just walked in...no appointment neccessary.  They couldn't have been nicer.  They listened to my story (a fairly common one, apparently).  I was nearly in tears at that point b/c my life, my business, everything was on that computer, and I couldn't access any of it!  The thought of repairs costing me enough to buy a brand new computer was giving me heart palpitations.

They said that it would be $45 to diagnose the computer, then, depending on what they found, it would be my choice whether or not to have it fixed with them, and the $45 would go toward the repairs if they determined that they weren't covered under my warranty.

They called me a few days later, and said that they thought that the problem should be covered under my warranty, and that they were going to send the computer off to Apple, plead my case for me, and see if it could be fixed for free.  All I had to do was come in with my external hard drive, and have them back up all my data, so we didn't run the risk of losing anything when they sent the computer off.  That was $90...for all of my data to be backed up (remember, I couldn't do it myself b/c I couldn't see anything on the screen)...a small price to pay, I say!

2 days later, they called me and said that my computer was back, fixed, and that the repairs were covered under my Apple Care!  Hallelujah!

So, in the end, I paid less than $150 to Austin MacWorks to get my computer back to it's normal self, when I could have paid Apple no less than $750 to fix a problem that should have been fixed under warranty anyway.

Thank you Austin MacWorks for being so kind, and a real advocate for me and my computer!

I will recommend you to everyone I know who owns a Mac!

These gentlemen know their business and customer service.  I walked into the store and was helped immediately.  I use VMware Fusion to run a virtual Windows machine and had a Windows issue.  Srini and John were able to diagnose the problem and fix it in a short amount of time.  I paid the priority service fee, and it was well worth it as they were able to fix the problem, make suggestions for upgrading my Windows software, and get the computer back to me in a matter of a few hours.  Their knowledge and expertise, as well as customer service, friendliness, rates, and business sense are terrific.
