History

Established in 1933

Austin Grace Church of the Nazarene began in a living room as a North Austin church plant of the Church of the Nazarene, a Protestant Christian church in what's known as the Wesleyan - Holiness tradition. (The denomination traces its roots to an anniversary date of 1908, during a merger of several like-minded groups at a tent meeting in Pilot Point, Texas). Nazarenes are evangelical, meaning they have it as their goal to spread the message of holiness (Christ-like living) across the world. Much has changed about Austin Grace's neighborhood (Koenig Lane, near North Lamar Street) over the decades, and membership has ebbed and flowed. Yet the church remains focussed on reaching the diverse people of Austin and its lively culture with Jesus Christ's message of love, forgiveness, and living a passionate life full of meaning.

Meet the Business Owner: Jesus C.

Jesus of Nazareth, also known as Jesus Christ (his Hebrew name being "Y'Shua"), is the central figure of Christianity, and is venerated as the Son of God and as God incarnate. He is the Messiah foretold in the Bible's Old Testament, and the New Testament writers refer to him as the Head of every Christian church.

Around A.D. 33, Jesus was executed by an angry mob consisting of Jewish residents of Judea concerned about his radical teachings and Pagan Romans who feared an uprising. Numerous witnesses saw something amazing occur three days later -- after his dead body was placed in a sealed rock tomb, he was found walking the earth again. Not too long afterward, Jesus arose into the skies, promising to return one day to usher in an earthly regime where he will be King of the world and bring everlasting peace.

(But if you're wanting to meet our church's pastor, too, he's cool! His name is Bob Shipps. "Pastor Bob" may found any Sunday morning or Wednesday night at Austin Grace.)
