Aussies at Ausiello's! Four Aussies hired a car and drove to the pub in Belmont from San Jose only to find a notice on the door "open again at 4pm". We were about to leave when Eddie the Scottish owner said he would be more than happy to open the doors just for us.

He cooked us the best cheeseburgers and even explained Shuffleboard to us. And we gave him a good old laugh when we started playing with the puck upside down.

I even bought a shirt. This is a fantastic place with good food and atmosphere and a friendly service to boot.

Last week some impromptu evening drinks with Hubby and some coworkers brought us here and I must say - what a great find! With not being much of a drinker these days we tend not venture to bars too often, you know.. waking up face down on the kitchen floor with your hand in the cat food bowl just isn't cool once you hit 30! But I digress... With this laid back, friendly place so local things could easily change.

First thing I noticed when we walked in was how big it is inside, talk about looks being deceiving. Not only that but it's kitted out with various games (Shuffleboard, Darts, Pool)  to challenge your buddies to while your knocking back the customary ''Black and Tan''. That's right.. A drink that originated in Britain presumably served so liberally here because of the Scottish owners which was another nice surprise when arriving here. I haven't heard a Scottish accent, especially as strong as the friendly couple had in over 2 years and it almost made me feel like I was back in Britain.

While we were here we also decided to order some food. They have a fair sized menu (http://www.yelp.com/bi...), mainly consisting of Burgers (Chicken or Beef), Hot Dogs and typical bar Snacks (Wing's Mozzarella stick & Fries). I got the Cheeseburger (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) and hubby the Bacon Cheeseburger (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) both of which come with a choice of Fries (or 'Chips' as we call them over the pond), Chili or Potato Salad and you can then help yourself to the condiments bar which is stocked with Lettuce, Tomatoes, Pickles, Peppers ect and a number of different sauces.
As bar food goes the Burgers are pretty good. They're certainly not gourmet but sometimes you just want to get back to basics with a simple lump of Beef in a Bun and for that you come to Ausiello's!
Small word of warning that they get their food deliveries on Thursday so if (like me) you come on a Wednesday and want Chicken, they may not have it.

Parking on street can be a bit iffy so I suggest parking in the BART car park just over the road.

Come, Chill out, Drink and be merry!

    * EDIT: * Gotta laugh at the 2 star review down the page and the person complaining that 1. They didn't have much going on for St Patrick's day and 2. They couldn't get an  Irish Carbomb. Uuurmm.. it's run by a Scottish couple. The Scotts do not celebrate St Patricks Day. You want Irish, GO TO AN IRISH BAR. *sigh*

Ausiello's is a laid-back local place to get reasonably-priced beer and surprisingly good pub food.  (Not exactly fine dining at the Ritz, but burgers that handily exceeded my expectations compared to food at other pubs).

Street parking is usually available, otherwise, the CalTrain lot across the street has tons of free parking.

They're big on the local sports, so expect to catch a Giants or Niners game on the TVs, otherwise, they have pool, darts, and even shuffleboard.

    What's not to like?

This is a great local bar - one of our favorites in the area. The food is decent although nothing that stands out. We've only had the burgers though, and they do have other things on their menu we'd like to try. Parking is never a problem - there is street parking and the Cal Train lot across the street is free. We come here for the shuffleboard. The Scottish owner even gave us a lesson the first time we played there, and chances are he'll wander over and give you a few pointers too. We loved that! They also have darts and a few pool tables. And, a Megatouch game (touchscreen video game) that's ancient but so much fun!

Been here a couple times; nice pub, good atmosphere even though it doesn't look like it from the outside. It has a shuffle board, some games, and a couple pool tables in the back.

The bar serves up some decent beer and they've got a good selection on tap. I have only eaten here when we have a private party -- but you can see where they cook up the burgers and hotdogs, because the grill is right next to the bar. I must say, the food is pretty tasty, and the condiments bar is superb.

This is a great place to hang out or host a party!

Came with some friends to get some grub and get some beers.  The food is quite tasty here for a small older looking dive bar joint.  I had their regular burger with fries and it was just to my liking.

Great atmosphere for a group of friends to hang out, chat, laugh and play some darts.  I'd come again when in the area.

I have one very good friend who lived next to Ausiello's Tavern for years.  We went back for the first time in years for me . . . it's still the same.

I absolutely LOVE Eddie the owner/bartender.  No matter how crap o'day it is, he puts a laughing smile on my face.  Add one part Angus MacFergus + one part wise cracking Scottish import = Eddie.  I think this is a family run business and his wife Joan, and maybe his sons work her too.  Nevertheless, the service is always good, there are many regulars, locals and visitors alike.

The mood is divey/casual without being a gross City place.  The restrooms are usually clean, but were backed up a bit Saturday night -- and that was a first in at least 10+ visits.  They also have a short order cook for simple pub food which is nice.  They used to have peanuts you could order and throw on the floor, but no longer.

I like my wine and the selection is a little short, but I usually settle for hard cider.  Mostly, it's beer, pub and sports watching crowd, but was glad to have someone re-teach me Liar's Dice and almost win.

Excellent bar with pool, darts, and different areas with flat-screen TVs. I really like their wait staff with their accents. I ordered the wings twice and they are some of the best wings I've had. They are covered in spices and herbs and they have a large variety of sauces for the wings.

Other than fantastic schools and expensive housing, Belmont doesn't have much to offer. One other great thing it DOES have, however, is some great little local bars, and Ausiello's is probably the best of them. (Marvin Gardens on Old County Road is one of the others.) I'll admit that I'm a little biased because it's close to my house and they have an excellent selection of beers on tap. I mean, seriously ... how many small town pubs outside of Ireland have Smithwick's on tap?

Just tried their fish and chips last night and it was really good; I think that's the only food I've had so far. As for the reviewer who complained about the bathrooms, yeah, they can be kinda nasty, but it's a BAR, for chrissake. When was the last time you saw a clean bathroom at a bar? I was there on St. Paddy's Day too, and yeah, there wasn't much going on, but Ausiello's isn't that kind of a place. It's very low-key, not big-party style. If you're looking for an unpretentious, low-key, neighborhood pub with good food and great beer, Ausiello's fits the bill just fine.

Been here on two occasions with friends and colleagues. Absolutely wonderful and cool place to hang out. Foosball and pool tables keep folks engaged. Maybe your one chance to beat your boss at a game :)

Always found the service to be great. I haven't tried the full menu yet but the wings and the mozzarella sticks were yum.

There was an issue with the card payment system but they didn't blink an eye to let us go and make an alternate payment arrangement.

Definitely a place I'd go back to.

Tip: Street parking could be a challenge during peak hours and that is true for most of Belmont-Carlos. However, the Caltrain station is right across. Not sure if one could park there for an hour without paying.

Ok.  So here is the deal with this place.

    They have pool and shuffleboard.
They air a lot of games in TV.
    They serve food.

That being said... The service I got was good. The food I ordered they no longer serve (fried zucchini) and they were out of mozzarella sticks.  Two thumbs down for that.  Seriously.  How on earth can you sell out of munchies like that during playoffs baseball.  Think ahead and plan for crowds.

I would have given this place 3 or 4 stars had the food situation been different.

My friends and I recently discovered this cool tavern when looking for a local place to hang out in the evening. I was pleasantly surprised to find such a cool spot just down the street from my place.

Although most of the patrons are locals, the bar's proximity to Belmont CalTrain station (right across the street) makes it easily accessible to out-of-town visitors as well.
This station also provides an abundance of (currently free) parking spaces.

Inside you'll find a decent selection of beers on tap and a selection of wines served by friendly bartenders in a somewhat timely manner.
Although I've only sampled the grilled cheese, their grub looks pretty good as well.

If (like myself) you don't trust your friends with sharp objects after a few drinks, you should stay away from the darts.
Other game selections include shuffleboard, pool, and Golden Tee arcade golf. If you feel like you've gotten too good at shuffleboard to play with your friends, you can try challenging Eddie. If he's in the mood, he'll gladly put you in your place.

It may not turn out to be your type of scene, but it's definitely worth at least one visit.

Joan is my girl...whenever I get a little homesick for Scotland I can go to Ausiellos, talk to Joan, and have a kick ass burger or steak sandwich.

The bar is run by a Scottish couple (Joan and Eddy), and their son works there sometimes too. There is an English girl that works there as well, but I think she might have lost a few brain cells because she's very forgetful. Whatever, I love that I can come here on my lunch break and have a beer.

At the end of a long night of rock-climbing and nursing of an unfortunate ankle injury, we were in much need of a beer, and found haven in Ausiello's...

The atmosphere was very laid-back, a nice reprieve from the usual "Thursday is the start of the weekend" scene that we might run into in the South Bay.  The people here were chill, into their own thing, with no pretense.

The decor is perfection, as if a Hollywood set designer took all things "tavern-y" and put them all in one place, sans Matt Damon & Ben Affleck.
Legendary 49er, Giants, and Warriors jerseys framed overhead.
A shelf crowded with decades' worth of softball trophies and the like.
    Teevees attuned to various sports!
    Shuffleboard table!  Three billiards tables!
    Dart board!  A [newfangled] jukebox!
A requisite Golden Tee arcade game.
    Peanut shells underfoot.
    And to top it off?
    A painting/print of, I believe, Winston Churchill.

The dark-varnished wood (mahogany?) bar stretches from near the front door to halfway back towards the pool tables.  Behind the bar, you'll find a half dozen taps or so, plus various bottled brews in the chiller. There's also the fryer which frisizzled up baskets of deep-fried goodness for our hungry party (fish'n'chip, seasoned fries, mozzarella sticks), probably undoing what exercise we'd accomplished beforehand. But the best part of Ausiello's charm has to be Eddie, the charismatic and friendly barkeep/frycook/"owner's husband".  Great guy!  Even took the thoughtful time to pack a ziplock of ice for a friend's injured ankle as we left.

    What's not to like?
All in all a great place! It's UYE/DYL worthy...
    Most definitely, we'll be back...

    Reasons why you should visit.....

SHUFFLEBOARD (no, not like on cruise ships...like, at Ausiello's Tavern"...on a raised up table/platform) It's really fun! Trust me!

BILLIARDS: 3 Tables and they're always hopping...make sure you got game...otherwise, you might get hustled, princess!!

PLASMA TV's galore: You'll catch the game...you'll catch ALL the games!!!! Everything is on at once, but somehow its not obnoxious and you can definitely carry on conversation(s)

MAGIC GUM:  They have this gum that alleges to "immediately sober you up"....hmmmm...minty fresh breath   AND  no DUI? Sounds like the perfect end to an evening! (Good night kiss optional)

The clientele is a mish mash of business dudes from Oracle, contractors, Peninsula preppies, cougars from the tri-cities (Belmont/San Carlos/Redwood Shores)...makes you wonder if Open Table malfunctioned and they lost their spot at "Town" (~_~)
Point being....nice mish mash of people...folks seem to be down for a good time in a very low key setting!

They do serve good pub grub...have only had the burgers/fries and they were each a solid 4/5...Normally I'm here en route to another spot or after I've already eaten...so I'm no authority on Ausiello's menu.

This place definitely should make the cut on any respectable pub crawl of Bel-Carlos! I gotta confess...I really love the shuffleboard! Also, lots of mad soccer fans hang out here...could be a great spot to catch some World Cup Games!

Located right on El Camino between the always charming Belmont Tattoo and Belmont Smoke Shop, this old school sport's tavern has got a good kick back charm to it. If you are a Bay Area native, you can relive the golden 80's by absent mindedly gazing around nearly every surface. Bay Area memoribilia from legends of the past line the walls, including one of my personal favorites Wil Clark. Any other remaining space is filled with beer tchockies, witty quotes and trophies from tournaments. Add some pool tables, TVs tuned to sports, a jukebox and not a single video game newer than the year 2000 or so. So you know that equals fun for the whole 21 and over gang!

The bar menu is passable if you're pro pork. Fortunately, this is Yelp, a site where a healthy amount of readers tend to imbibe on bacon and other such piggly things.(side note: if you weren't aware of that fact already, do a search of Bacon Dog Cart in San Francisco or an Atlanta search of the Bacon Party). There are plenty of pork product offerings on hand here--hot dogs, grilled cheese with either ham or bacon, hamburgers with ham or bacon, the list goes on. Other menu options include stuff like chicken wings, fries, chili; those of you wishing to nosh on a diet are pretty much SOL. They have a decent sized condiment bar to decorate your sandwich or burger with which is also a happy plus.

The bar is large enough to seat oodles of people and there is a second seating area just across from the bar with the stools on either side allowing for maximum sports watching. A separate side room holds the largest big screen TV. I have to give some super big props to the bartender who was on duty this last time I was here. I ordered a Newcastle and barely a sip into it (I was taking it easy believe it or not) the bartender got my attention and handed me a fresher glass because the first one was flat. Bartender guy I salute you!

This bar is very much a gathering spot. It's been here forever, that's obvious and seating is ample inside plus there are a couple of cool benches out front for all you smokers. Over the course of a few afternoon hours (which included some horrific pool and Sharks hockey), I saw at least a dozen men and women filter in and out, always joining a familiar face or two in conversation. The first time I came here it was with a friend and her father to play pool and the whole night was a happy, familiar, familial event. Just reading the reviews of other Yelpers, reinstates my initial thoughts and feelings but you know what it's not an exclusive feeling to regulars. And I can always recommend that.

I've been here a handful of times.  I like the openness of the bar, how there are defined areas ( a place to play pool, an area set-off near the darts, etc.).  The bartenders are focused, efficient and friendly (although I hear they let down their friendly face and bring on the Irish sarcasm, once they get to know you and you become a regular).  Domestic beers are a good bargain here, anything else can get a little pricey.

I love a bar that offers a good variety of food to soak up the alcohol.  I had the famed burger here once and it was just OK, but the next time I had it and the burger was GREAT and lived up to the hype!  It was perfectly charred, cheese melted just right and the perfect compliment to a glass of beer.

It's a great pub to get together with some friends and have a little fun people watching, playing darts, watching the game on TV, or playing pool.  I've also noticed that the times I went there, there seems to be a disproportionate number of men to women, which is probably a good thing if you're a single woman!   It has the feel of a regular neighborhood dive without the scary and sad, drunken regulars.

My favorite bars are the ones where you can't really see inside to see what kinda crowd and atmosphere is going on. This place with their huge wooden 3 inch thick doors is EXACTLY like that.

You know what you do when you find a place like that, storm right in and take a seat at their bar and their bar is lonnnnnggg. I swear, their bar seats like a 100. You know the telephone game where you tell the person next to you something and then they say it to the next person, etc. you could probably say the word "rock" to someone and have a complete analysis of prop 8 come back to you.

It's more of a guys sports bar here since they have shuffleboard, pool tables, foosball, darts, some video games. If your a ladie and like those games you'll probably like this bar or at least the guys that place those types of games.  You're more likely to over hear conversations on who who is a better QB Joe Montana or Steve Young. rather than hear conversation venting on what happened at work today or the best places to get your hair done.

But yeah, it's one of those places and I kinda like it.

We've come here to morn, to celebrate, just plain old drink, or to flat out get drunk.  Ausiello's can you you going no matter what.

It's not fancy, but that's a relief for a guy like me.  Some low-key place on the pennisula to kick it old school style when it was brews and bro's.

This is a great, convenient, inexpensive munch to parttake of if you happen to be waiting for the Caltrain, which is right across the street.  I used to go here all the time when I commuted from Belmont  to the city....DELISH!!!

Came here a few nights ago to watch the Steelers / Miami game.  Any other location would have made a bad game even worse.  But, at least my Steelers won.

I think I said "i like this place a lot" at least 5x when I was there.  My sister says that I keep repeating the same 3 jokes over and over again.  Apparently, it doesn't just apply to jokes :(

Both the big screen TV's were broken, and I watched football on a screen that was distorting the image.  I mean I know football players have big calves ... but they aren't really THAT wide are they?

The fish and chips were delicious as were the seasoned fries.  The happy hour special were free hot dogs during half time.  Chilled glasses for the delicious and refreshing beer.  The lady working behind the counter was awesome ... she zoomed around and did a great job at getting everyone's orders (food and beverages).  The crowd was also pretty cool ... the type of people who if they jump into your conversation, you don't think is gross.  I like this place a lot.

Thank you Yelp for convincing me to come here! We were looking for a dive bar but found this place instead. It is a great neighborhood pub. Decent selection in beer and lots of games including pool, darts, and shuffle board. The food is basic pub food, berger and fries, that sort of thing. But you can enjoy it with a group of friends in an eclectically decorated bar with a nice cold beer.

Great beer selection and a good crowd (I can say this because a lesbian softball team showed up - Thank you god!). The service was iffy however, and the whole place smells like whatever they've just grilled. Not great if you're working on your hustle. "Hey, you girls like meat?"

The owners are nice people, but there is a girl there that comes across as though shes been hit in the head one to many times..... Oh well, aside from that its a good place to go, and if your here at night, just keep in mind Belmont PD don't have much to do, so you will get followed home.

Cool spot centrally located in Belmont on El Camino. I first noticed this place driving by months before I went inside.

Like others have said it has a good collection of games, friendly vibe, and it a nice local place to have a drink or watch a game. The staff are friendly, too.

Great place to hang out. If we lived closer, we'd be here even more often. My friends meet here before or after their softball games and we just stopped there on a caltrain pub crawl for a bday party last weekend.

Cool, subdued, fun place with a great staff. Love the burgers too: made to order in front of you with the real not just grill marks grilled taste. And the fact that you can put on your own toppings so I can extra tomato and pickle it if I'm in that mood. ;-)

You also can't beat all of the old school 49er pics and newspaper clippings: LOVE that.

Only downside is no full bar: only beer and wine.

Read about Ausiello's Tavern here on Yelp, and decided to try it out as a potential "place to go with a bunch of friends".  Great service, hot food.

We felt so welcomed by Eddie that I think it is worth an extra five mile drive for a beer. Perfect mellow vibe and the room on the side can be reserved  for free...I am thinking this is the perfect way to host a "no host" event.

I didn't realize that this place didn't serve hard liquor until I read some of the other postings...

This place is a Bay Area sports fan's dream.  One can literally spend over an hour just looking at the memorabilia on the walls...

The service is friendly and they offer food and drink specials.  I'd recommend the place...

This place is kind of like a hidden gem as far as dive bars go.

They have all kinds of entertainment: shuffle puck, darts, video games, TV's, pool, jukebox.

It's huge.  So, you can have as many friends meet you there and there will be enough room to not feel crammed in.

There is food, albeit, greasy bar food, but food none the less.

They don't serve hard alcohol, just beer.  This means people aren't fully ridiculous.

There are not your typical bar flies there being gross and lurking around.  Generally, this bar has a younger crowd that is not completely disgusting.

You can always find parking.  You can even use the Caltrain lot across the street.

The only thing that would make this bar better is KARAOKE!!!

This is the ultimate place to hang out on the Peninsula if you want fresh beer - and they have a wide selection of it - , great pub grub, shuffle boards, pool, jukes, darts, pinball,  good sport on TV, good patrons and clean bathrooms.

Eddie and his family are very welcoming and accommodating to most TV requests. The TVs are not necessarily state of the art, but they are never shy to put you in front of the big HD screen. And if you're fluent in European soccer, meaning being able to keep up with Eddie and his wife Joan, even better.

    A word about Ausiello's food:

It's the ultimate burger, chili cheese fries and chicken breast burger place! Like another reviewer said on here...it's preventive hang-over food. If you're not a salad and water guy/girl and want to indulge every once in a while, you'll feel right at home. Otherwise, you're shit out of luck. Sorry.

Overall, it's a very balanced place with good food, good beer and an extremely inviting atmosphere. The locals are nice, but keep somewhat to themselves at one corner of the bar, the people in charge behind the bar are always friendly and are trying to accommodate your wishes and the food service is always perfect. You can even watch while your food is being prepared.

Great place and I highly recommend it!

    Mike

Met up with some friends here.  I took bart to millbrae and from there conveniently took the train to the belmont station.  The convenience is awesome for drinking.  I went south instead of north to watch the Giants beat philly so people must have looked at me funny sporting my giants gear on the train.

So obviously this place doesnt serve hard alcohol, which i think is a good thing.  because if this place did, there would be alot of shirts off up in here!  I had a great time watching the game at this place with its excellent selection of beers on tap and the safe vibe.  unlike some bars, you dont feel like someone is going to ask you "where you from?!" or "give me your wallet!"  The most awkward spot about this place is right when you walk in, because everyone turns to face you when you open the door, like youre in a scene of children of the corn or something.

the food is great and the service is fun... only two irish folk were working the grill and the bar but somehow everyone was kept happy.

    HIT IT HARD MY FRIENDS.

Both in great condition and maintained.  $.50 per game.

Other distractions:  free shuffleboard(?) & billiard tables (not free)

Fun bar.  Laid back atmosphere.  Have a Fosters for me if you go!

Shuffle board? Hells yeah! Super fun way to chill with friends.

Blue moon on tap, friendly bartender and plentiful seating.

Park on the side streets in the area - it ain't no thang!

    Cheers.

So I wasn't sure if i should give them 3 or 4 stars...
This place has been here for a long time. Seems to be family run... They just serve beer and wine.. NO cocktails...
They have shuffle board.. which I really like.. They have darts... pool tables.... TV's...
They serve some decent food that isn't too expensive....
The one negative is that the last couple times we were there, the woman bartender was kind of rude.
    Otherwise, we will go back..

I LOVE the bartender here. He is absolutely hilarious. I think he's Scottish . . .  which makes his jokes and smart a$$ remarks even better. Also, he's a madman when it comes to shuffleboard, and will come over and school you if it's a slow night.

I think it's funny it's taken me so long to review Ausiello's, because it was one of the first places I found on Yelp (way back in '07.) I went for the $9 beer and burger specials. Fast-forward three years. I don't come as often, but I still think the food is awesome - for greasy bar food that is - and I still love to go there for a beer and a game of pool.

My favorite experience at Ausiello's was when the power went out in Belmont last summer. It was about 5pm, it was as hot as  . . .well . .  you know . . . and my boyfriend and I were looking for beer. Sure enough, Ausiello's was open, and there was a whole crew hanging out in there in the dark, drinking beer. We played some pool, had some beer, and walked home. On the way out our bartender sped by us in a convertible and pointed and laughed that we were walking. It was awesome.
