The atmosphere is outstanding. They have outdoor seating at picnic tables with umbrellas and a large indoor dining area. The place is always crowded, but the wait is short.
I have been going here for years and the food is always good, not great, but good.

I have noticed that over the years the portions are getting ridiculously small though.  A normal adult should not have to order two large portions to fill up.

We tried this place for the first time last night based on word of mouth from neighbors and friends who used to live in the area. We knew to expect a super casual environment with quick service and.. lots of seafood. One of the great things, we thought was the BYOB aspect. We saved loads of cash on the drink portion of the bill, as well as got to bring exactly what we wanted.

My husband got the lobster sandwich----LOADED with lobster meat. He really liked it. I got the fish and chips---very lightly fried and good flavor. Our kids loved the grilled cheese and chicken strips.

Being that it was our first time, we missed the boat on what seemed to be the number #1 ordered item: fried clam cakes. We counted over 10 tables that surrounded us with a basket of them..so, we will give those a try next time.

Nice family restaurant with history and a good location, plus parking.  Nice diverse seafood menu, mostly fried, a few broiled items, fresh catch of the day and lobster specials.  Really great raisin/cinnamon bread.  No shrimp cocktail, which seemed strange for a place with this menu.  All entrees (broiled scallops, fried fish, fried shrimp, lobster roll) were good, but not stellar.  Best part? the pie selections were great - key lime, coconut cream, plus the kids got coupons for cones next door at Aunt Carries Ice Cream.  Great flavors and a "small" is like a pint of ice cream - so beware.

I love this place - of course I may be biased since I've been going there since I was a toddler.

It's my 'go to' summer food stop. Fresh seafood, large portions, and decent prices.

Can't get any better than their white clam chowder and some clam cakes (mmm)!

After eating cross the street to Aunt Carries Ice Cream and get a Del's Lemonade (the best!) and some delicious home made ice cream.

***Expect a long line any time of day

Aunt Carrie's needs 2 reviews - 1 for the take out and 1 for the eat-in.  If you want take-out lobsters, this is the place to go.  Unfortunately, this review is for the eat-in.

We went to eat in here with about 12 people.  When we go there, the place was empty.  We were seated in the seat near the back entrance by the bathrooms.  Really great if you are incontinent but otherwise can't imagine a worse spot.  If you are seated here, go somewhere else.

The inside of the place is basically an open deck-like area with a ton of tables jammed together.  And we did not realize it, but it is BYOB.  Maybe it's our fault, but we did not have any B.

The combination of no air conditioning, no fan above our table, no alcohol and the 5PM sun beating on us through the open door made it a very uncomfortable experience.

The high point was definitely the bread.  It was really great.  More like dessert, but I highly recommend it.  The clam cakes are also something special.

The New England clam chowder should be called potato chowder with clams.  For a New England tradition, the chowder was a definite disappointment.  The lobster BLT was just OK.

The college-age waitress for our table seemed like it was a bother to serve our large table, so the service was nothing special either.

Two words for a great experience at Aunt Carrie's - TAKE OUT!

My lobster sandwich special came with a side of clam chowder and clam cakes. The seafood was fresh, and it was prepared well.

The sandwich sat admist homemade white bread, which, unfortunately, was un-toasted and un-buttered. The sandwich, despite the fresh lobster, was bland. Even a bit of pepper didn't make it more interesting. The clam cakes were delightful. The clam chowder (milk style, as they call it, a.k.a. New England clam chowder)  was bad. It had no taste whatsoever. It was a cup of milk, clams and potatoes heated up.

The freshness of the seafood is ruined by the total lack of flavor.

Having been here several times over the years, I always leave feeling that it wasn't as good as I had hoped or expected. Yeah, it's 'good', but there are lots of places that make 'good' seafood and 'good' clam chowder, and for me, Aunt Carrie's is just one in the pack.

Everything here is 'good', but nothing really is a standout. The other day when I was here I had a cup of clam chowder to start, which I liked, but was a bit on the thin side and surprisingly skimpy on the clams. Nice flavor, no grit, but nothing to write home about.

I ordered baked sea scallops for my entree and these were very nicely cooked and very fresh. To Aunt Carrie's credit, it was a mammoth portion. Bear in mind that when you go here you are getting no-frills dining - it's BYOB, very simple presentation and limited options other than seafood, so don't come here with someone with an aversion to seafood.

What they do is done well, with little to no sophistication or nod to current culinary practices. This place hasn't changed in decades, and I think that's fine. There's a comfortable feel to the restaurant and it's fun to eat at a place that's iconic. When it comes to the food though, I feel that you can get the same types of items at other restaurants that you'll like better.

Pretty damn good seafood and best part its BYOB. So we went and we brought a gallon of wine haha. I ordered the seafood plater deluxe which comes with a little of everything fried and a side of lobster salad since i couldnt decide on what to get. 33$ but It was deliscious or maybe it was the wine...? no no it was good. Also if you didnt want what they had for desert there (which came with the platter along with a salad and a cup of chowder, awesome right?) u can get a voucher to go across the street to theyr ice cream place and get a small ice cream which i did and it was pretty good along with a wide selection.

After reading about this place in Fodors and hearing about it from some family friends, my boyfriend and I stopped in on Day 1 of our New England Coast road trip ready for some amazing seafood. Although we very rarely eat fried food, we accepted the menu since vacations and un-healthy food go well together.

We split the crab cakes, clam chowder, fried clams and a fish sandwich, which the waitress recommended. The sandwich was bland and nothing spectacular. The crab cakes were very different from what I was used to (I think someone posted a picture of them). The were almost fist-size, deep fried balls. Delicious for the first few bites and to dunk into the chowder, but they get really filling, so don't order too many.

The friend clams were probably the best thing we ate - very flavorful, although I wish they had a steamed option so you could really taste their freshness.

The shack has a few tables and chairs outside so you can sit and bask in the sun or take the food to go and picnic at the lighthouse.

Overall, it's one of those places you have to try.

Okay, I have to admit I haven't tasted any better because this was my first time trying Fried Whole Belly Clams($11.79) which at that price I was looking for something to WOW me.  I made the order at the indoor take-out counter with a few young ladies and gentlemen.

When my order# 97 was called, I got a cardboard box where inside was a paper bag, a plastic fork and a Tartar Sauce.  I pulled the Belly Clams out of the paper bag and they were Breaded and Fried.  I've never had Belly Clams so this was a JOY to try.

Here's my take on this item, it is GREASY to start and many of them were stuck with each other.  Going through half the dish, I had one with a bit of sand in it which instantly got my thoughts going about  if I wanted to continue which I didn't.  The Belly Clams remind me of small Taiwan Oysters because of the similarities of the belly.

I can definitely see myself LOVING this East Coast dish if properly executed until then as a visitor I would not be going back to Aunt Carrie's for this specific menu item.

This place is decent if you're looking for a restaurant to go to with your kids.  It's casual, in a nice location, and spacious. They have the typical kid menu that includes a drink and ice-cream (you can get your ice-cream across the street at the ice-cream place or just have the ice-cream right in the restaurant-  good to know if you're kids won't last too long in the same location).  The waitstaff was young and friendly and the service was good.  The food, however, is nothing to rave about- very ordinary on par with typical fried bar food.  Go to enjoy the view and just relax for a while.

A Rhode Island summer  tradition.  Perfect after the beach, or better yet, go when it is a little more overcast to avoid the insane crowds.

This summer, I would say they have changed the menu (something that might not happen for years) and they have an even greater selection of typical seafood shack dishes.

My personal favorite used to be the lobster roll, and this summer its the lobster sandwich, which is basically the same lobster salad on their homemade bread.  But it is bigger and the lobster pieces seem even chunkier and tastier than ever. It is perfectly and lightly dressed. (The sandwich is worth the extra two bucks, so go for it.).

I love their clamcakes (they are so flavorful and full of claminess!) to dunk in their white clam chowder.  Steamers are always good, another traditional dish, here, as are the lobsters and fried clams.

If you still feel up to it, I reccommend their homemade pies with coffee for desert.  The rhubarb and the blueberry are awesome and light, and they also have a wonderful apple pie; (here, I would get it a la mode, with vanilla ice cream.)

You have the option of ordering at the indoor, screened- in stand.  You can sit  like the locals at the down-at-heels tables and people watch.  Or, when the line is not too long,  you can go inside the restaurant.  Thirdly, they have cute picnic tables in three areas. One is on the side of the restaurant, where the seagulls are aggressive, but I often find them handy to pass off extra clam cakes on (they are very filling!); the other tables are in the back near the woods, where at night you may be bitten by overly hungry mosquitos; and the newest seats are across the street, in a newly renovated area, off the larger parking lot.  Less likely to be bit, here!

They don't serve liqour, but I believe you can bring your own beer.

Oh, they do stay open a few weekends after labor day,

AND you should know that they are closed Tuesdays.  I don't want you to drive all the way up there and be disappointed.

Aunt Carrie's has been updated, recently, but it retains its low-key charm from back in the day.

No summer is complete in RI, without a trip to Aunt Carrie's. You will love it!

This is a member of the James Beard Foundation 'America's Classics' award.  After going here, I know why.

Absolutely magical Clam Cakes.  Light, fluffy goodness I could not stop eating.

I have never been too big a fan of lobster.  Yea, I liked it, but I always thought it was a bit overrated.  It was by having the Pt. Judith Lobster (which was caught about a mile from Aunt Carrie's) that I realized that I was completely wrong.  I had never had ANYTHING this juicy and good.  I get it now.  And, I'm sorry for saying all those silly things about you, Lobster.

p.s. hope to see you soon.

I went to the take-out window and ate outside on one of the picnic tables - Aunt Carrie's is situated in a wonderful location, just up the road from the Point Judith lighthouse.

I had the "combo" for $6.99 - a cup of chowder and three clam cakes.  I started with the clam cakes, because I wasn't sure what they were.  Basically hush puppie-ish fritters with clam in them - these were very light, delicious, and wonderful.  Good thing they only gave me three because I'd have eaten myself into a coma.

I wasn't crazy about the chowder though, I like it thick and creamy - while AC's New England clam chowder is full of clam, potatoes, and other goodness I wasn't mad about it because it was waterier than I like it.  To each his own, I suppose.

Next time I go back I'll sit in the dining room, very homey feeling and with a fantastic view.

Oh Aunt Carrie's...how do I love thee? The ways are endless.
Though I have no recollection of it, I do know that I first started coming here when I was in a high chair. Every summer from adolescence until my early twenties my family would take a day trip to Point Judith to walk the beach and eat at Aunt Carrie's.
Growing up on the CT/RI border I have never been a stranger to clam cakes. For all of my 15+ years of living in Boston I rarely can say the words clam cakes and someone will know what I'm talking about...and they're probably from RI.
Aunt Carrie herself invented these wonderful fried, golden delicious fritters and God love her for it. The food here in general was always so fresh tasting and delicious.
Well, after way too many years of being estranged from Aunt Carrie's (not by choice mind you, rather chance) I had the absolute pleasure of returning to Aunt Carrie's last summer with my family. Guess what? NOTHING has changed! It looks exactly as I remember it and the food and service is still fantastic!
It is nice to know that not everything changes. It is still owned by the same family (4th generation since it opened) and I think Aunt Carrie herself is smiling down on her old stomping grounds.

I have been craving Aunt Carrie's Clam cakes and Chowda for the past year while I was deployed overseas. Unfortunately, I was sadly disappointed, the Clam cakes were very dry and the chowder was watery and flavorless. We also ordered the fried clams and they looked like they had been fried in old oil, we couldn't even eat them. Hopefully they were just having an off day.

I never miss out on an opportunity when visiting family in Massachusetts to take a drive to Scarborugh beach. I used to enjoy there clam cakes as a child by the dozen and they have not changed one bit and taste just as I remember them. Another win is that they are BYOB. Recently I had once again, another fantastic visit over Labor Day weekend. Chowda and clam cakes makes for one satisfied customer.

People outside New England who come to Aunt Carrie's may wonder what all the fuss is about; the chowder here is nothing fancy. The chowder is little more than clams, potato and broth (three varieties: New England, Manhattan, Rhode Island- or white, red, clear). But what Aunt Carrie's lacks in sophistication is made up for in authenticity and taste. Their chowder is the Platonic ideal of what the dish should be. Everything other chowder is a bastardization of the bowls served up here.

You'll want to order clam cakes as well. They're terrible for you, but that's not the point.

Aunt Carrie's: I.T.C.C.S., or It's The Clam Cakes Stupid! Light, fluffy, crispy, FRIED pieces of clam-filled wonderment! And it IS good...for your psyche! Wounded by the winter's lashings of snow, ice and sleet, a day at the beach and a trip to Aunt Carrie's is like unto a baptism in all things fried.

This is NOT a stop for the diet conscious; rather it's a place to let the breezes from the open windows cool your clam chowder as you relax with a glass of wine or bottle of beer from your cooler (they're BYOB, a fact I only recently learned after ten years of patronage).

The complete dinners include thick slices of fresh-baked bread, of which the cinnamon- raisin is a sweet Nirvana for the taste-buds. Okay, I am a bit hyperbolic in my praise, but my in-laws have been coming here for years, and I've become a fan as well.

I often get the fried squid rings or whole-belly fried clams. My wife is partial to the lobster roll (not fried, mind you), and all three are excellent. The freshly made pies are very nice way to finish your meal, or you can go to the ice cream stand they run across the road.

This place is a Rhode Island classic. In fact, it's an American classic. I'm not just saying that... the James Beard Foundation - the Oscars of the restaurant industry - awarded Aunt Carrie's the America's Classics Awards in 2007. Aunt Carrie's is a tradition in Rhode Island that's been passed from generation to generation. Despite the rickety floors and the dated decor, the place is an institution.

The food is everything you'd expect out of a classic Rhode Island seafood joint.  The clamcakes melt in your mouth, and the chowder is beyond perfection. You can sit in this little clam shack and watch out the window as the waves crash up against Point Judith. The wait can be excruciating on weekend evenings, so go early. You can't wait for the off-season here, either - this place is only open daily from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

For a more uniquely Rhode Island experience (and a little less of a wait), bring a blanket, order take-out, and sit outside in the grass overlooking the ocean. Just watch out for the overly aggressive seagulls, who will take any opportunity they can get for a bite of your clamcake.

Kinda starting to remind me of Lenny and Joe's in Madison, CT..food was average at best [steamers overcooked, scallops swimming in butter, lobster roll filled with the foam/claw meat]..chowder was good, not great.  Clam cakes were probably their best thing.  I'm all about nostalgia and where we used to go as kids, but price[broiled scallops were $24.00 for like 8 scallops] and food-wise, you can do a lot better.  Go for the ice cream across the street..that was really good.

This place had really good clam strips, but mean, mean waitresses.

A friend and I stumbled upon this place after geting lost coming home from the beach last summer (funny to see now that its a "classic RI eatery").

We ate outside at the tables by the water (nice view). I had to wash my hands real bad and they told me the bathroom was in the port-a-potty. Now, I'd been at the beach all day playing with starfish and crabs and didn't want to eat with all of the bacteria I probably picked up that day.. so I looked in the PP and saw they had antibacterial soap. So I did my business, then lo and behold, NO HAND SANITIZER LEFT. So now TWO reasons not to eat with my hands.

So I just got a little peeved and used my fork to eat my clam strips and french fries.

Half an hour into my meal I see these people going in and out of the place.. almost like they were USING A BATHROOM.

Sons of bitches. It's not like the port-a-potty was more convenient to the outside either.. it was all the way on the other side of the building, so a little "right in that door" would have been nice.

One of the many 'seafood in the rough' selections on the beach at Point Judith, Aunt Carries offers decent 'beach food' for good prices.

Enjoyed a lobster sandwich...the bread was thicker than I wished and found myself wishing I got the salad instead of the sandwich but  on the positive side there was a generous portion of lobster meat and it wasn't 'over mayo'd'.

Ordered the clam cakes which offered more cake than clam - but were tasty and something I don' t often see on menus.

Service was efficient  once sat but I wasn't impressed listening to the conversation of the waitresses previous night escapades while I sat in the waiting area for a table.  Seemed counter-intuitive that there were 3 waitstaff  hanging out chatting while there were uncleared tables and folks waiting to sit.  I'm sure they have a system but it wasn't clear while I sat  there waiting.

Can't expect too much beach-side...I'd go back and get a smaller order of the clam cakes.

There is a take out window as well.  I'd recommend getting food take out and bringing it to the point to enjoy!  The views are incredible!

I too am signing-up for a Yelp account just on the account of my first time eating at Aunt Carrie's. I can't believe how misled I feel. My mom's last night with us in New England and we take her out for her favorite; lobster. We waited for a long while with our 5 month old infant - just to get the full experience so many people raved about on this site. My dad and husband ordered fish and chips, I the tuna sandwich. The only thing good the entire meal was the homemade bread - which I wouldn't go to a seafood restaurant to get.
Really, it was bad. The presentation was beyond horrible and nothing was cooked correctly. The fries tasted stale, the fish was soggy and looked like an afterthought. My mom was too nice to say - but I could tell - the lobster was not worth it. I feel so badly for taking them there. Believe me, they lost a local customer.

Pros: Fish and chips, clam strips, view of ocean and salt marsh, friendly and helpful server. Maybe the best thing was the cinnamon bread they brought out for appetizer (free). Could have eaten a whole loaf!
Cons: Clam cakes - good heavens, what's all the fuss over these about? They were just balls of fishy tasting fried dough. Not to our taste - but we're from out of town. A native taste, perhaps?

Ok 1 Star is a little harsh but I have to bring down the deceitful 4 Star average Aunt Carrie's currently has when it pops up on Yelp.

I'm sorry but this is the FIRST TIME yelp has ever steered me wrong.  It actually has forced me to make a yelp account and write my first review to warn fellow yelpers.

Ordered the clam cakes, white chowder, coconut shrimp, fish & chips, & homemade lemonade.  Everything was just OK.  Nothing special.  Bland.  Not bad... but not really good either.  The perfect definition of the word "mediocre."

If you're looking for somewhere to knock your socks off, this is NOT the place.  However if you're eating here because you're fulfilling your basic survival instincts (not to starve to death), then it'll do the job.

A few theories I have on why this place might have gotten as many great reviews as it did:

    1)  Lot's of out-of-towners have reviewed this place & maybe they haven't tried all of the other amazing seafood restaurants in RI?

    2)  Locals may have confused this with Carrie's seafood in Prov when writing the review? (That was my mistake after I confronted my friend who had praised Carrie's about how awful this place was just to find out I went to the wrong restaurant).

I still like Iggy's clam cakes & chowder the best-- anyone who knows of better clam cakes and chowder should message me pronto because I will def go try it.  :-)

It wasn't until I came to Rhovde Island did I find the best clamcakes. Aunt Carries has good size cakes loaded with clams. They're not pasty like the ones at Iggy's. The chowders have become watery over the last few years. The service is fast and the choice of eating outside, to go, or inside makes the experience that much better. The remainder of the seafood has always been very good for us. When you order at the counter you're able to watch them cook the food. If you go, don't forget to order  a fresh baked cinnamon raisin bread.

Oooh, there's nothing like Aunt Carrie's clamcakes and (red) chowder.... nothing!  It's well worth the drive.  Not only is the food fantastic but I love the rocky beach behind it... a great place to eat your food in peace. :)  A RI tradition that brings back many memories... and keeps me coming back every time I visit!

After a month of anticipating eating a "stuffy" or housing some of the best clam cakes in RI (according to Ryan), I was just a little bit excited to see the Aunt Carrie's sign off into the distance. Upon exciting the car Ryan and I walked towards Aunt Carrie's and the gals headed in the opposite direction to Iggy's to pick up some dough boys.

I left the ordering to Ryan and he did us right. A dozen Clam Cakes, 2 Stuffies, and a cup of White Chowder should hold us over until our dinner in two hours.  The Clam Cakes were hot, crusty, and yummy.  For those of you who don't know (which I didn't until last Friday), Clam Cakes are basically hush puppies with a one or two clams nestled inside of them.  The cakes can either be dunked in your Chowder, dipped into tartar sauce, or just eaten plain. I can ensure you that either route you take will be a yummy one.  The White Chowder was also good, but Ryan, a Rhode Island native, ensured me that better chowder was to come.  However, that disclaimer didn't stop Audrey and I from dunking and slurping until the chowder was no more.  Finally, we dug into the stuffies. Appropriately, named it's a clam shell stuffed with a stuffing made from clams and some sort of bread crumby filler.  Aunt Carrie's stuffies appeared to be topped with either parprika or maybe even a little cayenne.   They were delicious and I could have easily housed 10 or maybe even 20 more of them.

The interior of Aunt Carrie's is what you'd expect from a borderline hole in the wall clam shack. However, the physical interior is trumped by the unbelievable atmosphere. The place was packed with mouth watering patrons ready to get their fix of clam cakes and stuffies.  The lines were deep and the prices were cheap (I didn't intend to write that cheesy rhyme, but now I kinda like it).  I love sampling regional cuisine as I travel and this experience was no different.  Some people like seeing the sights and going to museums. I like stuffing my face and hanging out with locals.  Aunt Carries is a great place to do both!

We had an ocean day yesterday complete with a visit to the Beavertail tide pools and the Mystic aquarium, so it makes sense (?) that I'd want to eat seafood.
My partner's family has eaten here a ton of times, so he knew what to expect, but I didn't. I certainly didn't expect them to be out of steamers, which I'd been hankering for all day, so that was a disappointment, but the lobster I had more than made up for it.
Likewise the clam cakes--light, buttery, good chunks of clam peppered here and there--I don't understand the point, exactly, of a clam cake, but it's something everyone ought to try. These actually tasted like clams.
The chowder was a real treat. Not overly congealed, like some New England Clam Chowders, but actually milky. Likewise the Rhode-Island style clear clam chowder, which, although a little overloaded with potatoes, was delicious.
I haven't had my dessert yet--it's sitting in the refrigerator due to an untimely lost-molar-filling event--but when the Novocaine wears off, I'll write in with more details.
BYO. I could have used either a nice Pinot Grigio or a good IPA to go with my messy lobster.
You can't beat the setting here, though. I'd go back just to stare at the sea.

Ew.  Dragged here due to it's local fame, I had the displeasure of eating clam cakes.  I don't get it... salty donuts with chunks of rubbery meat and then deep fried.  The white clam chowder was basically potatoes and tiny amounts of clam floating in warm milk.  Ugh.

This place is great in the summer for take out or eat in.  I prefer Iggy's across the street myself, but Aunt Carrie's has a better dining room if you're in the mood for a sit down meal.  Just make sure you don't go at the end of the season--they served me and some friends stale food.

This is summer. This is beach.  A Rhode Island Classic!  Get a seat by the windows and smell the fresh sea air while eating clam cakes.  I make a point of going a couple of times a season.  The line is sometimes long for a table but you get in fairly quik.  It has a great mix of people and a really frindly staff.  I always take out of state visitors there in the summer for the real RI beach experience.

Clam cakes (called fritters outside of Rhode Island) are a Rhode Island tradition. The only state to eat clam cakes in is Rhode Island. Everywhere else is competing for second place. Aunt Carrie's has the best clam cakes. They are big, actually have clams in them, and they look like a clam cake should look like. One caveat-go there after your day at the beach, not before. When you leave Aunt Carrie's you will be filled.
