JACKSON HTS, NY
I am new to thrifting and AuH2O was a great place to get my feet wet in the world of thrift shopping. The store is laid out like a boutique which gives the place a warm and inviting atmosphere. Everything was in good to very good condition, clean and organized. They sell pretty much everything from dresses, tops, bottoms, shoes, purses, jewelry, and other accessories like scarves. Most pieces are between $10 and $20 and quite a few were under $10. Being a bargain hunter I've definitely bought cheaper, brand new items but there are some very unique finds here that you will not find at Forever21. The brands are mostly random and non designer but I did see a Theory cropped jacket for less than $20. The jewelry is somewhat expensive for what it is but their birdcage necklace display is awesome!
I had a lovely chat with Alexandra who was very friendly and authentic. I had no problems redeeming my Yelp Deal coupon and she even gave me the 15% student discount (every Thursday!). Alexandra told me that she and her partner go to warehouses and hand pick all the clothing pieces for the store thus the low prices. I would definitely revisit as they have new pieces every week. Although sometimes you might not find any treasures, you never know when they'll get some amazing stuff! -

Went here because I saw 44 reviews and almost four stars. On arrival, can't say that I was exactly thrilled. I saw some vintage items...and then I saw items which I would deem as just reckless. Upon further searching of everyone else's review, I guess I didn't have any "luck" that day with finding anything? These reviews are more back round stories than a real review of the products....
The owner was nice and courteous. A few of the dresses were gorgeous but not my size. I understand that, seeing as its a thrift store....but the rest of it is not mention worthy. The shoe selection was atrocious, not because it was a small selection, but because they were scuffy and dirty.
I may go here again and try my luck because everyone seems to love this place. But I wouldn't make a special trip just for this store. -

Great addition to the East Village thrift store scene. Small store with great prices which is worth a visit. Don't think anything here is over $25 dollars, and a $10 rack is in the back if you are on a budget (rack is next to the fitting room).
The store has plenty of shirts, jackets, dresses and sweaters, although I didn't see any jeans or slacks (I did see a jumpsuit, but not sure if that counts). Some items are lower-end/ mass market (H&M, Forever 21), but saw some items which would be much more expensive elsewhere, such as a Nicole Miller dress for $15 and one by Plenty for $20. A few pieces were from the 1960s and 1970s, and in great condition, so be sure to look carefully.
Some beautiful vintage jewelry here, quite reasonably priced. An amazing selection of post and clip-on earrings - think I saw a few dozen pairs. The jewelry was all in great condition, so no sorting through messy flea-market trays with broken items here!
The owner is great and my visit was a pleasure.
Highly recommend this one!Listed in: Reduce, reuse, recycle

This store was the size of a shoebox..lol. Walked in, woman at counter barely mumbled a hi, I looked around quickly and saw there was nothing of interest, and left. There was hardly anything in the store, and I am wondering how this place stays in business. The shoes they had (a few pairs) by the door were ugly. This place was a waste of time.

Cute little shop that seems like every item was handpicked. BUT I wasn't greeted, the shop owner barely acknowledged me, and there wasn't that much of a selection. What was there was cute, but I found some great pieces in the jewelry at $1 a piece.
The girl working there I believe owns it, and she is really pretty. Definitely reminded me of Juliet Simms (finalist on the Voice season 2) -

Love this place. I went thrifting before and was grossed out but not here. As soon as I got there I saw the $5 rack outside and found a dress. Going inside it was smaller than I thought but a lot if stuff. I found another dress on the $10 rack. I got two dresses which each could've been an easy $30 each. I was happy. It was organized and clean. Plus the owner put me on to other spots which was very kind. Definitely going back during the spring/ summer.

I was really looking forward to this store after reading the reviews. I feel bad for putting this review up because the store owner Kate is indeed extremely nice.
My friend and I went to the store on the day they were having their weekly specials (Thursdays I believe?). The store is quite small, which we had known about and were not disappointed by this. We browsed the entire store TWICE, trying to look for something, but didn't find anything. My friend and I have pretty different tastes, but even then, neither of found anything we liked. The problem isn't so much our tastes, but the fact that most of the things on sale were of sub-par quality. The prices are definitely suitable, so kudos on not over-pricing things.
We've both been thrift shopping before the store simply did not have a good selection. It is entirely possible that we went on a day when inventory was low, or perhaps we do have really strange tastes after all. -

I really wanted to like this place since I had been reading the owners blog for years, but I didn't find anything I like when I went which really disappointed me. I think you have to be really really really fashion forward to wear some of the stuff here because otherwise, you end up standing in front of the mirror in the dressing room and thinking how stupid you look in Ugg boots and the granny dress with the doily neckline detail. The prices are dirt cheap which is awesome. I guess its like any other thrift-type store you go to. It's all about luck. I will keep going back until I find something I like.
One more thing...when I went there were a ton of cameo necklaces. I'm not really into cameo necklaces, but if you are, this might be the perfect place for you. -

First of all, the name, come on. Cute. One of the owner's last name is Goldwater. I had a little moment after looking at their business card. I thought it was great.
Anyways, onto the store..
I'm from Boston, so I haven't been exposed to the best vintage and thrift stores. My heart yearned for more. There has to be a place where there's a great selection and most importantly---great prices. Being a frugal student in the city and being interested in fashion is a huge predicament. I have seen countless stores overpricing vintage items that I almost gave up completely. Thank goodness for AuH2O. Boy, did they prove me wrong.
It's a very small store, but there are many things to look at. The best thing about the clothing is that it is carefully selected. The owners definitely have great taste and take extra care of what goes on their racks. Going through all the racks is a breeze, and the small size adds to its charm. Going to AuH2O is the biggest sigh of relief from overwhelming amounts of merchandise in chains like Forever 21 and H&M. Plus, every item is one of a kind.
The first time visiting, I picked up a deep red blouse with the cutest collar, a red patterned midi skirt, and a wicked pair of silk shorts that looked like a skirt. Oh my goodness, if I could only describe how fantastic those shorts were. It's like a Van Gogh painting, in shorts form. And it was $5. I probably would have paid 3x that amount for them. Because they were that awesome. In total, I spent $25, with the 15% off Thursday Student Discount. A skirt, shorts, AND a blouse for less than $30? I die.
The second time I came, I didn't find anything. It happens. But I just went again yesterday and found the cutest little black dress. It was a cross between lingerie and evening wear with lace and a zipper down the middle. With the quality fabric, it could have easily been $100 or more. I paid $27 for it. I guess it's a bit much in terms of thrifting, but I knew that if I didn't buy it, I would regret it. One of the owners even let me put it on hold until the next day because I forgot my wallet.
Seriously, I think I'm going to shop here more than those chain stores. Plus, I won't see another girl down in Washington Square Park wearing the same thing as me. Who else can say they have Van Gogh oil painting like shorts? Do yourself a favor and check out this thriftique. -

AuH20 is my favorite boutique in the Village as it is filled with good fitting finds in excellent nick. The prices are completely reasonable (almost cheap) for a second hand store and the vintage variety is a lot of fun. Some of the clothes I wouldn't know how to pair or pull on (some smaller sizing); however the ladies working will always help you out, without ever being pushy or intrusive on your shopping turn about the small sweet store.
Every time I walk in here I come out with a purchase, even if it is just some of their incredibly reasonable and funky jewelry that bolsters my costume wardrobe. -
Review from Jen Z.
This place is amazing. The prices are set at what thrift shop prices should be set at (i.e. $10 for a red leather purse thank you very much), and the ladies who pick out the items have a very good eye...especially for accessories.
The lady who was working there when I visited was very friendly, helpful, but unobtrusive to my shopping experience, and most importantly, unpretentious. I highly recommend this shop for some good, cheap finds. -
Review from Julie C.
This store is not my style, but if you want vintage it is a great place for you. The prices are amazing. I didn't see anything over 30. There was a five dollar rack and a ten dollar rack. Considering there were only 4 racks, not bad.
Most of the comments are dead on. The store is tiny, but it doesn't take long to search the whole store. I only spent about 15 minutes in AuH20 but was able to see everything. About 5 "Regulars" came into the store and chatted with the owner. She was very friendly and knowledgeable about the customer's wants/needs.
I say go, check it out. If the clothes are your type, frequent often. -

Came in here looking for a light summer jacket. Walked out of here with a beautiful light-ish summer jacket. : )
It's a small thrift store, one fitting room, some items aren't that cheap but others really are. The clothes look well taken care of and there are a lot of unusual pieces. The blond lady owner was really friendly but she was busy doing other things and didn't offer help. I'm going back, its worth it to check out. -

This place was amazing! The lady that was working the counter was the owner. She was SO courteous and wonderful. I was able to use my coupon with no hassle. She was helpful in telling us how to catch the subway to the city and how much a cab would be. This shop was amazing and affordable. I HIGHLY reccomened !

Maybe I came on an off-day, but this place was just a little under OK.
I walked in with another person - the lady at the counter (I'm not sure if it was the owner or who it was), barely even glanced up. No hello, welcome, nothing. For such a small store this was a little unnerving.
The merchandise was thrifted items cleaned up a bit, nothing spectacular or a great deal.
I tried something on and it was too big, but there was no mention of a comped alteration that other reviews have alluded to.
When I went to the front to look at jewelry the woman at the front looked miffed that I was even in her air (she glanced at me with a few dirty looks).
All in all, not the best service, and not the best selection. Sure its fine to pop in but I wouldn't make a trip just for this store.
In a word - forgettable. -

Honestly after all of the glowing reviews I wanted to ADORE this place. I spent one whole day thrifting and this place was on my list (I'm not even joking I mapped and scheduled each place judging by how close they were to each other, their proximity to food and when they opened). It was by far my least favorite and sparsely curated collection I had ever seen. Now, that being said, judging by how many people just love this place, I'd definitely give it another swing but only if I am down in the area, which means to odds are good since I love LES. I will update on my second visit.

Review from Lucia P.
A few weeks ago I was doing my daily Yelp browsing and searched for thrift stores in the East Village. I found this store with perfect reviews so I decided to come here on my next visit to the city. Conveniently, they are open every day from 12-8.
Excitedly, I rushed over to the store and found it closed. :( I was really disappointed and tried to peek inside to see what kind of goodies I could have gotten my hands on. Right up front in the window were a pair of earrings that I HAD to have-- just couldn't reach. Damn!
The following day, I called the store to ask their new hours but was told that there had been a family emergency and the shop owner (Kate) was unable to be there. I told Kate that I saw earrings in the window that I really wanted and asked if she could please hold on to them for me. She said of course and that made me happy.
Following a series of unfortunate events, I was unable to make it to the city for 2 weeks but Kate was gracious enough to keep holding on to the earrings. When I finally was able to get to the store and meet her, I was beyond thrilled. The store is small and clean. It doesn't have a thrift-store smell, nor is it dark and dingey. It's a quaint 'thriftique' where everyone is welcome. Prices of items are so cheap too!
Kate and her partner Alexandra are so passionate about what they do. I noticed their interactions with customers and saw how much care they put into their work. Alexandra had just found some great vintage finds for the store and the girls were absolutely gushing about her treasure chest of goodies. I can't wait to come back here and look through some more of their jewelry. -

I will freely admit to it...I'm cheap. For me, walking into AuH2O is like walking into a mythical land I've only heard whispers of in my dreams. Unassuming from the outside, inside is an incredible array of deals. Now, that's not to say that everything in the store is gorgeous and in top quality condition. But if you dig, you can find something special and I don't think I really saw anything in here over $30 so that's always a plus. Some of the clothes do look a little worn...so as with any thrift shop you should check for stains, tears, repairs, and just give it a real lookover to see if it'll crumble into dust once you walk out the door. I managed to score a lovely Anne Klein floorlength dress for $14. Are you kidding me?
The clothing mostly features blouses and shirts with some skirts, pants and jeans. There are a handful of dresses but if you're looking for a Cinderella gown for a special night this is not the right place. There are hangbags in the corner but they're a little too scuffed and worn for my taste. There is also jewelry scattered in the corners from $1 to under $20. The jewelry is a little underwhelming, a mix of metal that looks like it's from Forever21 and bulk street vendors.
The dressing room is in the back corner and is the size of an outhouse/refrigerator/very small closet. Essentially, you've got room to stand and turn in a circle.
I will definitely be back. :)
Update: I met Kate! She's absolutely lovely. Do chat with her if you get the chance.Listed in: Shop Around

This a cool thrift shop. It is extremely small but definitely worth a trip cuz they have really nice things. The shoes were really cute but I have small feet so none of them were my size.
The woman who helped me out was very sweet. I love nice people lol
Also if you're a student, definitely stop by on Thursdays because they have a 15% discount for students. I love that!
I'll be back for sure. :) -
Review from Sharon T.
After wandering around from each vintage shop to shop, I think I've finally found my go-to vintage shop. Let me tell you, the journey had a few bumps. Some of the shops had either too ancient items that goes back to the 1940s, overpriced used items, or grandma clothing.
But AuH2O is different. You can find good, I mean GOOD brand name items still with tags on them on the $5 rack or $10 rack or on the racks, what a steal! The $1 jewelry/accessories pan is always delightful to go through.
The moment you walk in, you'll receive a warm welcome by none other than Kate. The shop is tiny but great as well, which is something you rarely find in most vintage stores that smell like dead rats or something old. The $5 and $10 rack is always there, which is always tempting for me to walk out with something. I recently got my mother a brand new Tocca blazer for only $5! Has everything for everyone, whether you prefer a more conservative, mature Jackie O look to plain old basic shirts.Listed in: The Ultimate Shopping Guide

I've actually never bought anything here (sadly), so why am I giving 5 stars? I'll give you 5 good reasons! *shakes fist*
5. The selection is small and manageable: no digging, no frustration. You can clearly see everything that is for sale.
4. The prices! Used clothing is well, used. It should be priced accordingly, and in this shop, it definitely is. I've been in countless resale/vintage/consignment shops that were asking $$$ for stained/tattered/or just plain hideous garb. Which brings me to my next point:
3. Everything was in fantastic condition. I didn't see a hole, stain, scuff, or pill on anything.
2. The environment of the store is so warm and inviting, not pretentious or anything along the lines of "You're-too-fat/ugly/poor/unstylish-for-our-store" vibe. Good tunes playing and a friendly shopkeeper (owner?) making jewelry in the corner.
1. THE SMELL. The clothes are sanitized before being put out to be sold and the shop doesn't have that... smell. You know the one: the melange of the aromas of mothballs, B.O., granny perfume, urine, unwashed hair, dust, and smoke that most vintage/used/consignment shops have. I give major points for this, seriously. Seriously.
Since the selection is so limited, I would recommend visiting often. Just because you go one week and don't find anything doesn't mean the next week's visit won't be filled with treasures!Listed in: Used Garb.

I went to AuH2O purposefully after reading reviews on here last night about what a wonderful thrift shop it is and I've got to say I'm impressed.. I am very new to thrifting so it was refreshing to have a small collection to go through as opposed to mounds of clothing like other thrift stores. Just as in any other thrift shop sizes are limited so you basically have to take what you can get if you're chubs like I am but the selection is great, nice jewelry pieces and the bags are awesome! I can see myself coming back and student discount of 15% on Thursdays!
I got a leather camera bag that I can also use as a purse for... 9 BUCKS.. a bangle for a dollar, two rings for around 8 bucks each!! That's around 26 bucks and got it for 20 bucks with my student i.d. -

Soo many cute clothes... so inexpensive!!!
I bought a black winter coat for $22 dollars ( I later found out the hood is rabbit fur). I'm not a huge fur person, but wow that's a good price.
I also bought several cute t-shirts here..
I think whenever I need something I'll come here first.
Just a warning though.. if you see something buy it because it will probably not be there later.. :-( ahh the dress that got away.... -

Its not SUPER SUPER cheap, but you leave feeling like you got your moneys worth.
The owner was great! I just love that she isn't trying to take advantage of her customers.
I only left with 2 sweaters and a purse all for around 25 dollars. (pretty good)
I would have got so much more but... im on a budget. lol
I hope she brings in more thick and warm winter coats, Ill try again next week. -

This is definitely my new found love in NY!! I'm not really a thrift shopper at all, but my sister is and she came to visit wanting to visit as many as these shops as she possibly could in her short visit. I bookmarked a bunch of vintage shops on yelp and used them as a guide for where to go. This was our first choice.
We walked in and the woman cashier (I don't know her name, unfortunately) was the coolest, nicest, funniest gal ever! She was incredibly helpful and she definitely made us feel super comfortable here. She was joking around with us the whole time and told us what clothes were worth it and what wasn't.
This shop is TINY but has a great selection. I found an amazing beige wool coat for $28!!! What an effing steal!!! Even though I need to get the sleeves tailored because they are too long, I just had to buy it! I mean, $28, who can beat that! It looks like a brand new expensive coat! Woohoo!! I also bought a brown clutch purse for $8....more woohoo!!! My sister bought a ring, necklace, and a sweater, total? $21....yup!! I think this place definitely made me a new thrift shopper and I'm officially in love with this place as it has made me convert!
Side note: the place across the street is also great....BUTTTTTT.....it's incredibly expensive!! I mean, the stuff they had is incredible (burberry coats, marc jacobs bags, gucci clothing) but at the prices they have, you can just go to Bloomingdales and get them at the same price, new! So definitely head across the street to AuH20 and you'll find exactly what you're looking for without breaking the bank! -

Great selection at a great price. No need to dig for buried treasure - the entire stock is brimming with style.
Alexandra was sitting up front, had good tunes going - Beatles and Stones amongst others - and was so friendly, even offering to switch out a chain on a necklace for another customer desiring something longer to go with a pendant she was purchasing.
I went back just a few days later because if you give me a box of wine and a 15%-discount, I'm yours. Luckily, AuH2O knows the way to my heart. On my previous visit, Alexandra had invited me to stop by for the holiday party, and it was a lovely and lively group of friends welcoming in customers to partake in the joy of vintage and the holiday spirit.
I found gifts for my sister, my sister-in-law, my mother, and myself - all for less than 40 bucks. Box o' wine or not, I'm in love. -

Let it be known upfront that I have shopped there only once and it was because of a Google Offer coupon. I must say I was satisfied with the service. Found a pair of nice heels ($13.50) and a silk scarf ($5.00). The items are all fairly priced. They rarely have products that cost over $30.00. Cheap, cute finds.

My first time visiting AuH20 and I will definitely return. I purchased two awesome skirts! They have a nice jewelry selection also. The lady who was working there was super nice and chatted with me for a bit. I was nervous to enter, since it is such a small place but the staff made it an enjoyable experience. Usually when you go to small shops the staff is rude and pretentious, not here!

What a great little shop! I am still coming down from my East Village vintage shopping high days later. I stopped in this little spot after reading great reviews on Yelp and was not disappointed!
The cashier was SO sweet, not sure if she was the owner or not-I think she may have been. She let me know about their promo-write a Yelp review and get 25% off one item-and was so fun to chat with!
I got a great little purse and couldn't get enough of the jewelry. The prices were very reasonable and the store was neat and tidy. I so wish we had places like this in Atlanta, but it's nice to know they are waiting for me when I return to NYC! A definite must. -

Thrift and vintage shopping is usually overpriced in the Villages, but this shop is affordable to all and emphasizes recycling perfectly good used clothing. The owner's curating ability is phenomenal with a choice of accessible items without choosing just the flamboyant vintage items. The two at the shop were very welcoming and made it enjoyable to shop; I felt like I was with friends and could jump in on their conversation at any times - it helps that the shop is one small room.
They also offer a 15% student discount on Thursdays, on top of already low-priced $5-$10 racks. Women's clothing only at the moment, but I'm sure if they venture into men's clothing it will all be fantastic. -

So I've been thrifting in the east village for years now, and I wish I knew about this place earlier! Yes, its small, but the clothes are all in great condition and I guarentee you that the prices are unbelievably cheap and extremely affordable - and this is from the perspective of a broke college student. This place is very rare for new york city...I wish I could keep this place a secret but I have to spread the love. I also want to note that the owner is very personable, nice, and helpful. Today was actually the first time I've ever been there, but I already know I will be a lifelong customer.
P.S.: My first purchase here was a beautiful vintage necklace and was under 20 bucks. I frequent Forever 21 and I want to point out that this the jewlery does NOT resemble Forever 21's lack of quality. -

I agree, Kate Goldwater is very, very nice and makes the atmosphere of the store that much better.
The store itself is fairly small, so I personally would recommend going during the week to avoid the rush of the weekend.
She has various jewerly items--necklaces, earrings, and handmade ones that you can string together yourself (she said her friends made the pieces--they ranged from colorful balls to a watermelon slice) As for the clothes, there were two racks. There were some brands you would recognize--H&M, Banana Republic, however there wasn't a ton of those types. I personally liked the reworked creations--they even had nice, homemade looking tags on them. I was eyeing a really nice skirt for $45 but I don't wear skirts that often (or at all) but I am already thinking about going back and buying it. Those pieces were unique. There were also t-shirts, some shoes and dresses. A few were reworked out of a one-piece bathing suit, and they actually looked good!
I didn't see anything in the three digit price range which was nice and rare for this city! I don't remember seeing any men's clothing, however she does have it on her website -

This place is tiny tiny tiny. But it packs a lot. First of all, the name of the place is awesome. Second, the girl that owns the shop is super super nice and you can tell she loves everything in the store.
I found a great shirt here and it was less than $20. Tons and tons of jewlery, if you are a jewlery fiend, then come here. Handmade bags and belts, even some shoes.
The only downside to this place is the size. If there are more than 3 people in the store, it is way too crowded. There is a mirror if you want to try on some stuff, and a makeshift curtain that doubles as the changing room. Again, if there are more than 2 or 3 people, it makes it difficult to try items on.
If you like vintage and original clothing/jewlery, you should come here!Comment from Goldwater T. of AuH2O 5/18/2009

Ooh!! What can I say about how great Kate's store is? AUH2O is in fact one of the best stores in the city, and well, i am not just going to say that because Kate is a good friend of mine and I model and do makeup for her in her fashion shows...
but because she is a great talented designer with great ideas and a powerful activist who works her own intellectual concepts and opinions into her clothing and accessory design! (think..Obama! Pro Choice, Feminist slogans)...
i think its great! Her store is cute and tiny and suits her..I wouldn't ask for anything more. She designed it in orange, as it is her favorite color and she will give you a tour of her store if you happen to stop by! :)
I came across her one day while waiting for my Fiance to finish up an acting coaching session down the block...and we became friends instantly! :) yay for Kate! Even my Mom loves her!
She also believes that no one should pay a lot to wear beautiful clothing...so the prices are really good on any budget!
lovelove!
