I am really sorry to see this place close. I live in the neighborhood and stopped in only a handful of times but it just sucks to see so many of the businesses that make Rockridge special close it's doors.
I think the store will be open through August (kind of ironic....)
Minus one star because the prices are extremely high...I found a pair of Pedro Garcia shoes at Nordstroms for about half the price of August. -

Definitely one of the best boutiques in the East Bay! I love the layout of the store, and the selection is excellent and never changes. They have a great selection of jeans, especially. The jewelry is good, too!
Of course, the prices are high, but the merch is all very high quality and completely worth it. They are stylish without being trendy - the clothes are fashion-forward but will still look great in a year. They do have some good sales, esp. on men's stuff.
Also, the salespeople are all great! Friendly and helpful.Listed in: Rockridge

This is the place to find wonderful, perfectly fitting jeans!
Bought Habitual jeans and brown cords... had not planned on buying two pairs of pants - really came for one awesome pair to wear often, but i couldn't leave the store with only one! I received such customized, caring help which made the 10+ pairs I tried seem like nothing at all. It was pretty amazing how easily I was sized up for the perfect pair! jean shopping here is anything but a chore.
My husband was offered a beverage while he waited, which made the shopping experience more fun for the both of us! And we both noted how quality the men's clothes were...
Love the style of the entire place - especially strong in unique designers of all different types of pieces, from handbags to coats and accessories. You will walk away wanting it all! -

So the other week my friend and I went for dinner on College, and afterwards we were kind of meandering around. I think we were looking for coffee or something. We stumbled upon this place mid-meander. There's this string of shops that have these big open windows and are hella trendy.
Like this shop sells denim, but its all folded up on one wall and then the rest of the shop is covered in giant ceramic rocks and weird ass sculptures.
So when walking past, we noticed there was a party going on inside! Our thought was there's gotta be free food and crap, and maybe coffee that we could score for free ninety free. We waltz right in, and this woman approaches us and says something along the lines of, "Hi, there's art for sale benefiting some random disadvantaged kids, buy some art and some jeans and enjoy."
Ehhhhhhh. Hella bad art for $800 I could do with my little niece's finger paints on some butcher paper. Trendy ass people trying too hard. Trendy ass jeans trying too hard. Trendy ass food trying too hard.
We literally ate and ran. We had to like delouse ourselves of the trendiness when we walked out. We had to disinfect eachother.
You guys, save your dimes and figure out somewhere else to get your threads. Go down the street to Crossroads! What a waste you know?
Attached is a pic of the party, a price tag, and one of the appetizer trays.
Okay. So maybe I AM too trashy to enjoy this stuff, but why'm I gonna try to scarf down some cantaloupe wrapped in proscuitto. Eh? -

There was a time when I wouldn't think twice about dropping $$$ on clothes and other material things. During these economic times though, my money is saved for survival, aka FOOD.
However, if I feel the need to get my splurge-on, I'll come here and try on the fabulous merchandise. *sigh* (Oh yeah, and they carry the Humanoid label, my fave.) -

Simply top notch. They always have up and coming casual designers. A very unique selection! They've surpassed Villian's Vault in terms of cutting edge denim and unique urban finds. It's still not worth a trip to the East Bay, but ALMOST, and that pays a great testament to the finds here.
Staff is patient, helpful, and friendly. -

My boyfriend and I have been coming in to August over the past couple of years. We are now friends with all of the emplyees. And speaking of great service, whenever they get a new shipment in that they think we'd like, they give us a call. Everybody is so friendly that you could just go in and hang out. The owner always offers tea/cookies/friuts and the selection of clothing is TO DIE FOR.
Highly recommend. Don't listen to people who buy cheap clothing. August is worth every penny. You will always look your best. -

If you are into very cool, somewhat avant-garde fashion - there is no better place in the bay area. I drive from SF to shop here. The sales staff is laid-back and helpful, they let me shop without bothering me, but are there if I need help. I love the Rogan, Clu, and wide range of unique European denim.
Update: They also now carry Humanoid - a Dutch line that is hard to find and a favorite of mine to wear. -

for the purist, ultra-shishi, bank rollers who want to look like they are chill and laid-back modern-day bohemes... August is your boutique.
i am floored at the wonderful textures and fabrics that they use... i just can't wrap my mind around how they can justify charging so much for clothing...
i fell in like like with this blouse made from prison fabric (the designer handmakes each one using fabrics from the same suppliers for the prison industrial complex, pours some acid onto the fabric and stresses it... i dunno man, that is just too mats for my pop-the-collar job)... it is made from one piece, but asymmetrically cut... the back has a gossamer-like look.... so it looks like something I would wear if I was washed off to the beach because I just traded my fusiform scaled body for legs... for at least 650 coin. That is almost one-month's worth of rent money. Seriously. I tried it on and it looked mad sexy, but I just can't justify spending that much on a blouse that I can't even wear when I go out with my friends for korean barbecue. Seriously. I don't even think I can wear it for work because of the see-through aspects of it.
There are some really nice t-shirts that are more affordable, and many jeans' prices are comparable to what you'd get at Diesel, but they do have a lovely assortment of out-of-the-box fabrics and designs. There is this vest/blouse that is so soft and the designs look like they were laser-cut--for about 1000 dollars.
The space is gorgeous but smelled of slight patchouli (ech). The lady who helped us was super nice and helpful, and even let me use their restroom.
I'd only shop here if I can secure myself a baller sugar daddy, or if I hit the Super Lotto jackpot.

I really needed a heavy jacket... for the Minnesota-like winter we have here in the bay.... Well.... I rummaged the large box stores (Lane Bryant) and local boutiques... Nothing. I scampered into August one warm winter day.... And I found my heavy, super cute, wool, goose-feathered, Italian jacket here for literally 70% off. Lemme-jus say... if you'r gonna pay BUCKS for a jacket... there betta be a 'happy ending' you know what I'm sayin!!! But for reals.... I walked out with a gorgeous jacket at a GORGEOUS price... not only will you find great deals there... the staff is friendly and it's conveniently located on College Ave.

First Oakland loses Drift Denim Essentials. Now their last truly reputable denim boutique is gone: August. It's with a heavy heart that I offer my review...
Being the owner of my own denim brand, I've held back on rating August up until now as I've had a vested interest it--didn't want to seem disingenuous. However, I can *honestly* say that I've had nothing but pleasurable experiences in my dealings with this boutique. The women--all of them--were always sweet and engaging.
I bought my Regular Ralphs (Nidies) here a couple years back, and upon stepping out of the dressing room I was offered a genuine critique as to how the jeans fit me--ya gotta love people who "keep it real" with you at all costs. As it turned out, I looked pretty good:o) Lol, anyway...
August, for me, was about denim. And they had a great selection of high end pieces, offering everything from Nudie to Jean Shop. The boutique had a nice open floor plan, a good sales staff, a great selection of clothes and it was situated in a (seemingly) good location. One can only wonder what went wrong...
For one, I've said before, that Oakland simply doesn't seem ready for high end denim. Couple that with the troubled economy and it could possibly spell disaster. Oh well...
I could go on and on but it wouldn't change anything. One thing is certain: August's departure will leave a gaping hole in the city of Oakland. -

Big denim selection. As Jessica I. mentioned, they're folded along the wall, but that just means you ask for help and tell someone what you're looking for and they're super helpful and patient. I tried on like 10 pairs, found a pair I liked, then told them I'd have to come back cuz I wanted to bring a friend for confirmation before I spent $200, and they were totally understanding and glad to have helped even though I wasn't buying anything that day. All the prices are pretty steep, but they've got good brands (a lot of the jeans they picked for me were Nudie) and know their stuff.

It's not cheap, but then again this is not H&M....
a well-curated selection of designer clothes mostly for women, but with a smattering of menswear (Vena Cava, Koi cashmere, local Tsurukichi indigo, Tim Hamilton, Jean Shop, Notify).
The staff was warm, friendly and helpful -- a rare combination in shops like this. The space is beautiful. Only the art on the walls, I could do without. -

Even though most of my funds go to buying furniture nowadays my SF apartment shopping lifestyle of scooting down the street to Harputs and then up to M.J. and side trips to HUF and American Rag can't be kept dormant for too long even though I'm in Oakland now. August and neighboring Twenty Two keep me sane!

hey i'm a fancy dude, look at me in my steven alan shirts and apc jeans... who would have thought? somedays it seems the only remnants of my former crustier punker self which remain would be my awesome record collection and my incredibly stinky dog... and i would like to thank the nice folx at August for not only embracing my stinky dog but contributing to my transformation into a fancy lad... well edited selection of menswear from current darlings of the mens fashion world (engineered garments being my current favorite from their selection). yes its pricey, but you know sometimes there is a price to be paid for american made and well constructed clothes. you could just wait for the sales you know... which are also awesome...

Stopped by for the first time today as August was listed on the Engineered Garments site as carrying their products. Fairly good selection, although not much in XL. Discovered Kicking Mule Workshop. Staff incredibly helpful; service is a lost art, but August "gets it." Highly recommended if you are looking for a unique piece.

Well, I just drove by there yesterday and saw this huge "for lease" sign on the window. I hate to put it this way, but they got what they deserved.

The choice of clothes is nice every now and then. The items are way too overpriced. It's worth a visit only if this woman to whom I believe is the owner of the shop is not there. She's super skinny and tanned with short hair. She is very snobbish, never exchanged eye contact with me and has decided to ignore me at checkout. She did not acknowledge my presence and continued to engage in lengthy conversations with a group of people. She made me feel unwelcome in the shop and not appreciated even after making a purchase. Other staff has much better attitude than she does. It's a pity to see this shop go, but it almost seems unavoidable with this economy and the cold and discriminatory attitude of this woman. I can't help but to believe that she has something against Asian as my interactions with her has confirmed that. She is definitely friendly to non-Asians.
