Review from David O.
Came for dinner on a weeknight. The service was speedy, but the place was pretty empty so i can't say this is the normal time you might wait for a meal. Also, as of this review the location is under construction as several buffet tables are being added. It has the effect of making the place look pretty shambled.
Food was good, but not great. I have no complaints, but no raves either.
One personal quibble, that is not just directed at this place, but anywhere that does this. I hate places where you are supposed to figure out who to pay. This appears to be one of those places where you think you pay the waiter but you in fact pay on your way out. Maybe there is some secret code for this, but it really makes me feel stupid in a way I don't enjoy when dining out. -

When my husband and I lived in the Green Hills area from '07-'09, we dined at August Moon a roundabout dozen times with always B+ / A- experiences. They had a full bar equipped with different Asian liquors and sakes we enjoyed trying. The atmosphere was inviting, comfortable and clean; the service quick and knowledgeable. The food was always pretty good and although nothing special/unique, always a good product.
I went in to August Moon today for lunch (having not been since 2009-ish) and could not believe the terrible change. The bar is completely gone and the area has been filled with a 3 part buffet, stocked with dry overcooked and unattractive food. I was seated in a booth--made of torn leather patched up with duct-tape--and given a fork and spoon, wrapped with a napkin. A server arrived after two or three minutes with water. I asked if I could get a menu because I did not want the buffet. After browsing through the sticky and laminated-torn menu, I decided to eat quick with 2 basic appetizers: the egg flower soup and steamed dumplings. The soup arrived first with crispy fried wontons which were chewy and tasting a bit metallic. The soup was thick and a bit bland. When the dumplings came I had to ask for chopsticks; yes, ask for chopsticks in a Chinese restaurant. The dumplings were thicker than gyoza, which I like. The interior meat was a little seasoned ball, ready to roll out from its shell upon the first bite. After fishing it out of the very cold dipping sauce, I ate only two more and left three on the table. I wasn't asked if I needed anything else or how the meal was, but rather brought to me was the bill and a stale fortune cookie.
I was very disappointed and sad to see a once promising restaurant become one that I'll never return to again. -
Review from Rachel D.
After ordering, I waited a good 15 minutes before anyone came back out. But it was not to place food in front of me. It was the waiter giving me the phone so that I could spell out the website of the menu to a customer. o.0
It wasn't like he asked me to do so; he just handed me the phone. I felt bad for the guy that his Chinese accent was probably too strong that someone with an equally strong country accent couldn't understand. I may have a useless degree in linguistics, but translation was not my field of study.
I rarely order appetizers, but after the nice complimentary dish at Chinatown up the street, I thought the Zing Zing Plate would be similar. It's just a bunch of deep fried won-tons, filled and unfilled. While I am still weirded out by cream cheese in my Chinese food, the plate was decent for 99 cents. What I did not like was when I was asked for what type of sauce I wanted and he came back out and gave me the sauce in packets.
For whatever reason, I didn't order my usual go-to dish (anything with a sweet sauce). Instead, I ordered what I was hoping would be some sort of slice roasted duck on a bed of greens. Instead, I got what was obviously duck from a previous dish, deep fried, and sliced on overcooked carrots, a few broccoli, and water chestnuts (which I loathe). And in a nondescript brown sauce. It was horrible, but I ate the bits of duck that I liked, and pushed the food around the rest of the time.
Lots of booths and tables. For 5PM, there wasn't much of a crowd. A few people had takeout. But overall, it was empty.
I noticed a buffet area, but I think that was only for set times.
I politely took the leftovers with me, but then walked several blocks up the street to dispose of it next to my bus stop. -

This place is a joke and really folks, I've given them a fair shake. They quit trying about ten years ago and somehow have managed to trudge on due to some factor one would need divination to extrapolate. It's just a sad old relic from the 90s that needs to go away.
I will give them one thing. The do make some really good pot stickers but that's it.
Menu summary:
Beef with sugar
Spicy pork with sugar
Sweet and sour chicken with lots of sugar
Happy family in SWEET sauce
Sweet tea -

Needed Chinese on a weekend and the yelp options pointed us here. What else to do when going to a new place for the first time but try as many things as possible.
We turned on 30 Rock reruns so we could focus on the food. We had the lunch special five flavor scallops with steamed rice and the pork with black bean sauce with fried rice. The scallops came in a light sauce with a mix of steamed veg (zucchini, squash, snap peas). The flavor was fine but nothing stood out, and forget about five things. The pork came in thin strips (I was hoping for little chunks) and was mixed with veg in a sauce that was a bit more than mildly spicy, which was fine for the meal. I don't mind more spice, but the level was nearly just right. Of the two, we agreed that the pork was better. I've been told that the leftovers are even tastier, but I cannot confirm that.
The fried rice was the mildest fried rice I've ever had. It was fine, but no way of telling it was "fried". Lunch specials also come with soup and egg roll. We both had the wonton soup, which was hot and had good flavor but the wontons were HUGE. Normal amount of meat, sure, noodle encasement, size of a small plate. The egg rolls are the crisp spring roll sort. Not great. Fine, but that's all.
Remember how I said, try as much as possible? So we got a Volcano Plate from the appetizer menu, which is basically a Po Po Platter (Bo Bo Platter, etc), but it's a good platter. It has 2 ribs, 2 upper chicken wings (or at least ours were both uppers - i.e. humerus), 2 egg rolls, 2 beef skewers, and 2 shrimp toast, with (scary) sweet and sour.
The ribs were okay but were about half meat, half fat. The wings, I thought, were very tasty. I'm not a wing person, or even much of a fried chicken person but these were nice and crispy rather than bready. The egg rolls were the low point. The beef skewers were fine, not great. (..aside: I've never (never?) never had really good beef at a chinese place. I don't know what it is.) The shrimp toast are the highlight. I've never had shrimp toast that I wanted again but this was crispy, not greasy, and covered in actual and tasty shrimp without being cobbled together with filler. I will have to try the zing zing plate next time (as it comes with shrimp toast).
The sweet and sour sauce is scary because it is crazily red. ..almost burgundy. Very strange.
Worth another visit. -

Drinks, atmosphere and service = 5 stars
Food = 2.5 - 3
What I wouldn't give to combine the food from China Town with the potent and fun tiki drinks from August Moon...
Since I can't, I usually stick w/ pepper steak or General Tso chicken along with the August Moon Special Drink (best shared). It's a fruity concoction with a sterno-lit volcano in the middle.
One thing that I absolutely love about August Moon is the "zing zing plate". For about $1, you can get a trio of shrimp toast, crab rangoon and some kind of chip (1 each) along w/ your entree.
If you like buffets, they do one during lunch hours. -

Very decent for a Chinese restaurant. Atmosphere is about what you would expect--but it's clean and generally quiet. If you go for lunch (and you should) it's a fine place to take casual business associates.
Service is good, and food is above average for this sort of place. My favorite--and almost the only thing I get--is the cashew chicken. Hot and sour soup is tasty too--and I'm really picky about my hot and sour.
I will agree with Peter M--I always feel too full and a bit sick when I leave, but that's not unlike other Chinese restaurants. And probably my own fault--my eyes are always bigger than my stomach. You can get out of here for just about $10 or less, so price is right. -

I ordered take out and thought the food was good, especially given the choices for Chinese food in Nashville. Service was fast and I will be back!

If you are in the mood for good Chinese food, August Moon might be your best shot. With the usual spread found at Chinese restaurants, I can tell you from experience that their food is much better than any other place I have tried around these parts. I don't think it's fantastic (again coming from California I have high standards), but when compared to some of the other atrocities that I have found in Nashville, August Moon is really is miles ahead of its competition. I usually head there for take-out but have also eaten in and it has been a great experience. The place is tidy, the service is fast, and best of all the food is really reasonable priced. My to-go orders are always ready on time, steaming hot, and quite tasty. If I had to pick my favorite dish, I would have to go with the General's Chicken and some good ol' steamed rice.

I went to this place a lot for lunch when I was still working in Nashville. It's very close to my work. Foods are OK, a little bit on the FAT side, but the price is very reasonable.

For some reason it is easy to order too much here. Prices are a bit higher than most Chinese restaurants and food is a bit tastier accordingly. Like most Chinese restaurants, bad after-taste and feeling bad about myself for the unhealthiness afterwards.
