I went on down to the Audubon Zoo and they all asked for you !

How can you not love the Zoo? It's just so much outdoor fun! Snowballs and playing in the waterfall after looking at animals all day is what hot days in New Orleans are made for. CORRECTION now hot days are perfect for COOL ZOO the only splash park in New Orleans. Cool off have fun and learn a little something.

A membership here isa worthy investment since admission can add up quickly and you also get discounts on merchandise an events. Their events are the bees knees! Zoo to Do is by far my favorite kid friendly annual event in NOLA. Tons of activities free food free crafts anything you can think of

What a beautiful zoo! So glad we had great weather in March, so the Audubon Zoo was a perfect relaxing activity on a beautiful Sunday. If you're dependent on public transportation, hop on the St. Charles streetcar and hop off at Loyola/Audubon- it's about 9/10 mile walk through beautiful Audubon Park to the zoo, and well worth it.

Audubon Zoo admission ($16) can be packaged with admission to the Aquarium and the Insectarium, so plan ahead if you would like to do the package. Grab a zoo map at the entrance, as the proposed path on the map is actually a great plan. I was really impressed with the exhibits and some of the exotic animals here. The white tiger, the sun bear, the white gators, the komodo dragon.

There are huge trees everywhere, and in front of one 200-year old tree, a sign informed us of the history of the oaks of Audubon. (Sorry, you'll have to read it for yourself, but they are quite impressive). This zoo has a few specialty areas like the Swamp, complete with a wood porch and wooden rocking chairs. All that was needed was a pitcher of lemonade! In the Mexican jungle area are bamboos and Mayan ruins. What a nice area for the mystical Jaguar.

Such a well done zoo- highly recommended for nature and animal lovers, alike!

If City Park had a zoo I would never go to Audubon Park.  Fortunately for Audubon, City Park doesn't have anything, but a bunch of birds, coyotes and some gators.  I have not been to very many zoos and by no means do I consider myself a wildlife expert, but I enjoyed myself immensely both times I went to Audubon.  Bears, elephants, monkeys, big cats, giraffes, and scores of other species.

You can walk around with beer if you are so inclined.

There are multiple zoo fundraisers that I heard a blast, but I have not been.

The layout takes you through multiple continents and features creatures from each.

One disappointment was the seal show.  The seals didn't do any tricks.  What the heck is that ring hanging in the air for if ain't nothin going to jump through it?  They just kept bringing out different seals that performed the same dull tricks.  Still a great zoo though, just work on your programming.

This zoo is the most amazing zoo I have ever visited.  It was well laid out with tons of animals.  There is a lot of shade as you walk which makes the louisiana heat not so bad.  My girlfriend and I spent almost of the whole day there!  The monkeys were extremely lively so we spent a  lot of time watching them!

If you are a student (with your ID), I would recommend getting the Audubon Experience Pass.  it includes the zoo, aquarium, insectarium, and an imax movie for only $19! quite a deal! and you dont have to visit them all in one day, you have 45 consecutive days to visit each attraction once!

It was a fun filled day, just wish it was more family PRICE friendly. So you have to pay a fee to get in, a fee for the carousel, a fee for the splash park, a fee for the train, and a fee for the dinosaur exhibit (granted you can buy an all inclusive band for $9 a person) but really?!?! Drinks run at $3 (bottles water/soda) but the zoo was clean, everyone was friendly and the animals were obviously well cared for.

I've been a fan of the Zoo since as long as I can remember. When I travel I always want to visit other zoos to see how they compare, but Audubon is my favorite. I have such fond childhood memories of playing on Monkey Hill and watching the elephants do tricks but the days of camel rides are long gone it seems. My favorite animals are the otters in the Louisiana Swamp exhibit.

Things are a little different since Katrina. Some of the animals (like the hippos) are gone and some exhibits like the building with nocturnal animals (bats!) are shut down but there's great new stuff. For instance, the addition of Cool Zoo water park area makes me wish I was a little kid again. But the best thing in the aftermath of the storm is seeing the giant live oaks still thriving.

If you enjoy Audubon Zoo consider getting a membership. I'm not saying this to help them collect funds but rather because you get some great benefits. Yes, you get access to other Audubon Institute stuff, like the Insectarium and Aquarium, but even better are the special events like a behind the scenes evening even for members only.

I love animals.  I appreciate that humans want to see different types of animals and that many zoos are able to help prevent some species from extinction.  However - I hate what they do to animals.  So many animals just look so incredibly unhappy.

One of my worst zoo memories was an elephant at the Audubon Zoo - confined in an area not bigger than a single car garage, with chains attached to manacles on his ankle(s).  He stood in one spot and swayed from side to side, almost rocking, like he was trying to find his happy place and it wasn't working.

I'm pretty convinced that big animals don't belong in small spaces and that visit to Audubon Zoo is burned in my memory as supporting evidence.

The people rating this zoo five stars...I have no words.

The Audubon Zoo is a typical zoo. It's nice, but it's not five stars. I'd give it four if they had water fountains and didn't charge $3 for a bottle of water.

Yep, it's one of those places. You will fear that your child says "I'm thirsty" because this can mean another $10 as the family tries to rehydrate. The few restaurants were overpriced chicken fingers. You're best bang-for-your-buck calories are from the Hagen Daas near the central hub and reptile house.

The train around the zoo, not a true train, is $5 a person. The carousel costs more. The dino exhibit costs more. There were two other things that cost more that I don't recall.

The animals were healthy, though as usual the ones that were thriving were in the local animal exhibits. The raccoons were the highlight of our visit. Seriously. They were active and playful.

And then I'll have to mention the hours. It opens at 10am. Most of the animals are sleepy by then. I'm not suggesting they open at six, but just that extra hour if they opened at nine would be nice.

For those who think this is the best zoo they've ever been to, you need to go to a safari park. There's one up in Covington, north of Lake Pontchartrain. I tend to judge zoos against the Lowery Park Zoo in Tampa, and the Audubon doesn't measure up.

A tip for those with GPSs: When we left we just wanted some food, as I didn't feel like paying $35 for theme-park chicken fingers, and I just picked the McD's that's 1.3 miles away. The zoo is near the river, and GPS units work as the crow flies until you plot a path. The McD was on the other side of the river, and once we realized this, we'd gone over the bridge into the Upper Ninth Ward, which is a wasteland/warzone. This isn't near the zoo. The area around the zoo is nice. The residents of the Ninth Ward have already started destroying the beautiful pastel colored houses build after Katrina. You're GPS becomes useless due to the city removing the turnarounds in the median. So, just bear that in mind.

Great zoo! I'm generally not a huge zoo fan, but I have kids... so I go to zoos. I love the huge live oaks here which provide tons of shade and good atmosphere. And it's fun that the peacocks roam around free. Much cheaper than comparable zoos, too.

I had a great time at the Zoo during my visit in July. They had some wonderful animals the only problem was that the summer heat had got to a lot of the bigger animals. The bears, tigers. lions & Elephants were all sleeping!  I can't blame them, it was HOT!
It's a really nice and clean zoo. I don't have kids so I'm not sure I'll be in a hurry to go again soon, but I'll recommend it to anyone visiting New Orleans. I love that city.

This is one of my favorite zoos out there. Trust me on this one. Take the St. Charles streetcar from the quarter to Camellia Grill for brekkie and then head to the zoo to walk it off. You can catch the zoo shuttle right at the front of the park.

Now that we've got those logistics out of the way, let's do it animal style. I like the spread out layout of this zoo. You can easily work in the attractions in one big loop. You'll see the flamingos off to the right just as you enter. At the central fountain, hang a right for the feature attractions. The elephants were just starting up their show with their keepers. Those are some big boys and they were well trained and put on quite a show for the large crowd that had gathered. Not to be outdone, the amur leopards that were just to the left of them were in a frisky mood. They sparred and snarled at each other and romped around their enclosure like we've never seen before.

Fortunately, we were here early to see them all before the heat of the day had taken it's lethargic effect on the animals. That's really the key to seeing animals in the zoos. The Audubon Zoo had a most impressive collection of Big Cats that we really enjoyed seeing. They had a couple of white tigers, a huge maned lion, a couple of jaguars and the aforementioned leopards. The native habitat, spots and the strength through the neck and shoulders is the difference you'll see between the last two.

There are other exhibits that focus on specific regions and the animals you'll see there. We really enjoyed seeing the Masai Mara home of our beloved Big Cats. The swamp area with the white alligator and the Aztec temple home of the jaguar were also really cool and unique.

On a sad note, I really miss the river boat that we used to take back to the Aquarium to complete our loop.

Note: If you are going to visit the other Audubon attractions like the Aquarium, Insectarium or IMAX, you should get the discounted tickets to all of them which are good for five days after your first entry.

    A NOLA must see!!

A nice little break from the wild night life on Burbon Street, to see some wildlife. There were so many cool animals, and such a fun time here!

Came here on a hot summer day, but was able to plan the viewing of the exhibits based around air condition spots which were conveniently marked on the map, and was able to keep cool. I was easy to get to just had to hop on the trolley and there was a shuttle to take you from the trolley  stop to the zoo.

Def worth your time, actually writing this review after seeing the Bronx Zoo and love this zoo so much more.

The Audubon Zoo kicks the booty of Atlanta Zoo. Big. Time.

It's a great deal and much larger than I expected. You feel really close to the animals, yet they have ample space.

I could sit all afternoon in a rocking chair on the swamp exhibit (if someone brought me a mint julep or two). The water play section and moving dinos are outrageously cool, and so are the Mayan ruins.

They even have a waterfall hike to cool your feet.

    Love love love.

    Cheers~

The Audubon Zoo is one of the reasons that New Orleans is a great place to visit with kids.

I have been visiting this zoo since I was a child, so it is really nice to be able to return and bring my children.

In addition to the standard zoo animals (lions, tigers and elephants), this zoo has several additional exhibits. The Louisiana Swamp Exhibit has black bears, alligators and displays of swamp living. There is even a replica of the Honey Island Swamp Monster (our version of Bigfoot). The swamp exhibit also has a food area, which surprisingly had good crawfish etouffee.

It amazes me how some of the exhibits haven't changed since I was a child, but others are truly 21st century showpieces.

I do miss the days of the Camel and Elephant rides, but I guess that is too inhumane for the animals.

This zoo is massive. I suggest planning a whole day to visit. If you come during the summer, be prepared for brutal heat.

As an afterthought; every time I visit or think about the zoo I think of that old Meters song. I went on down to the Audubon Zoo and they all axed for you.......

Took the out of town niece & nephew to the new splash park at the zoo (+$5) and they had a ball.  It's a great addition to the park.

Plus we got to feed turtles and oggle the animals.  Why do I love the smell of the rhinoceros area?  Maybe it's the combo of rhino, zebra & wildebeast/gnu.

I also noticed the zoo is featuring the oak trees a bit more. Glad to see these elder statesmen getting the attention they deserve.

My favorite things about the exceedingly well-thought-out Audubon Zoo:

SIZE & LAYOUT: Absolutely perfect for seeing everything in one day without feeling rushed. You can leisurely walk through all the exhibit while reading the factoids surrounding each area, as well as catch a couple shows throughout the day, and still get through the whole park before it closes. As a bonus, it's laid out in a way where there is minimal backtracking if you follow their suggested path on the maps. It's not a massive zoo like Disney's Animal Kingdom, but it's not too small like you might find with state zoos or other non-national zoos.

DESIGN/FUNDING: Either more money is funded toward the Zoo compared to the Aquarium and Insectarium, or the people in charge of the zoo's money are spending it more wisely. I was literally taken aback by how PRETTY everything looked, especially when comparing it to the other two Audubon attractions.

EXHIBITS: All your standard zoo animals can be found here, but they also have an entire exhibit for local wildlife called the Louisiana Swamp Exhibit. The exhibits are creative too, not just having you look at animals from far distances across a railing. My favorite example of this was with the giraffes, where they cleverly placed giraffes' snacking trees right at the edge of the area where visitors were standing, so that when the giraffes were enjoying a meal they were literally no more than TEN FEET away from us. It was by far the closest I've ever come to a giraffe and it was awe-inspiring how gorgeous and majestic they were up close.

AND a plus for families: they have this water-fountain area for kids to run around, except instead of being a boring flat-ground area with spouts and hoses, it's a giant rock formation with climbing ropes and grassy hills for frolicking fun.

I think that's pretty much the entire park. So yeah, I really dig this place!

One of the best kept "secret" tourist attractions in New Orleans is their ZOO!  Set away from all the noise of the French Quarter, this park has got some excellent exhibits of exotic animals - most of them are in the open, not kept behind cages or glass.

You walk in and the flamingo "area" can be a little caustic to the nose, but orange flamingos are a sight to see.  From there you can branch off in many directions to see elephants, white tigers, lions, orangatans, the whole gambit of animals.  The "Louisiana Swamp" exhibit is a must.  Seeing the moving "ripples" in the duck weed is a trip!

Everything is kept pretty clean and there's LOTS of shaded areas from all the trees so, even though it was 90-something degrees out there, we weren't too overheated.

My only disappointed was the added fare expected to see the dinosaur exhibit.  You're already paying $15 a head to get in the zoo, why charge extra to see part of it??  But, overall, we were impressed (so much so, we went back TWICE in one week!).

Set in the spectacular Audubon Park, this sprawling, beautiful facility makes the most of its impressive massive Live Oaks, draped heavily with Spanish Moss and its bountiful other flora.  Water features and snack shops are plentiful throughout so you do not overheat ( a real possibility April through October in New Orleans).

Stellar standouts:  the two massive albino alligators, the cajun-themed swamp exhibit, the lemonade Icees at the swamp snack shop, the Mayan jungle exhibition replete with feisty jaguars, the brilliantly plumed flamingoes..... Oh, heck..... the whole place is stellar.

We did not purchase the water park tickets, as we had limited time and were catching a plane (sadly) back to D.C.  However, if you are planning a visit in August, I highly recommend you buy them!

Some fine print:  Tickets are not cheap but parking is free and plentiful and the snack shop prices are not terrible ($4 for a beer?  Pretty good).

I hate to bash on the Atlanta, Knoxville and St. Louis zoos... but WOW! This is the cream of the crop.

The new water area for kids? I can't even tell you what a big hit this was for a small addition to our admission.

We arrived at opening and many keepers were lining the walk with animals on exhibit. My girls fell in love with the three-legged turtle and young orangutan.

The layout of the zoo is great... everything felt easily walkable with lots of shady stops along the way!

One of my favorite zoos. I have been to many all over the country, and Audubon just gets it right.

All throughout the zoo, they have informational bulletins informing visitors about the history of the area, and the numerous historic buildings on the site. The food is actually pretty cheap and comes out quickly. Pricing on gift shop items aren't too bad, either.

I LOVE the Cajun exhibit. It's so well done. The raccoons live inside of old car parts, the bears drink water out of an old bathtub, and a visitor can learn about the history of the Cajun culture. Zydeco music plays throughout, and there are authentic instruments and records on display. They have an albino alligator, which is pretty darn cool if you've never seen one before (spoiler: there's one at the aquarium too!)

Monkey hill is another must-see. It was built by the founder of the zoo, so that the children of New Orleans would have a hill to climb up! We sit on the provided benches and watch the kids run up and down the hill and into the ponds.

The zoo itself is gorgeous. Shaded by huge 200 year old oak trees, surrounded by small ponds, and surrounded by beautiful homes. They offer areas to rent, so, in theory, one could get married here. I am trying to get my workplace to rent the corporate pavilion, and will update my review if we end up doing it.

In closing, if you want to fill a few hours or just get out, walk around, and learn some awesome stuff, check this place out. If you love it, become a member like me! You get a lot of discounts and hook-ups to cool events.

Love it. You all know what a zoo is, so I shouldn't need to spell it out for you, but here are some of the things that make Audubon stand out.

    1. Short walking distances to a dazzling variety of animals makes the day go by quickly without a desperate need  to stop for food and drink.

    2. Cool, clean exhibits in which the animals look less like they're trapped in a cage than at any zoo I've visited.

    3. Perhaps most importantly, the zoo is rarely crowded enough to make it a hassle to get anywhere.

I'd recommend a streetcar trip to the zoo for any visitor to the city.

Family visited the splash park at the zoo a couple weeks ago - its $4 for members.  Kids loved it.  Its going to be packed during the summer.  No pool, just water slides, fountains of water shooting everywhere.  Score a daiquari ($4?) or other frozen coctail at the food window while the kids play and every body is happy.

I've been a member for years and recently discovered the petting zoo (forgot the PC name) which the kids also love.

It's the only zoo around and I love animals so I have nothing to complain about.

Best part of the day:  Feeding the giraffes!  We came around the bend and saw the giraffe exibit empty and were quite upset...UNTIL WE CAME AROUND THE NEXT BEND!  All of our long necked friends were standing by a pavilion and the zoo keeper were giving out treats so we could feed the cuties.  It was truly amazing.  I've never been that close to one, let alone have one slobber up my hand while sucking down a dog bisquit.  Don't pet them.  That's what they're supposed to tell you, but they didn't tell us and my wife got a scolding from one zookeep.  They were nice though and gave her more treats to feed when they saw her remorse.

I will agree with my friend Elaine M... Summer is HOT in NOLA and the animals don't like it.  Go early or late when the temps are lower to see more than just sleeping animals.

This place would be a 5 out of 5 if it weren't double the price to get admission into the aquarium. Why do some places think we are all millionaires? I'm sure they would make just as much money if it were included in the zoo price, or just a few dollars extra.

That being said, the exhibits were awesome and most of the animals were out and about to be seen. We showed up two hours before closing time so we tried so see as much as possible and still didn't get to it all.

What can I say? It's a zoo. Definitely a much nicer one than the zoo where I grew up, because that place was so tiny and underfunded it made you really sad. Even though the Audubon Zoo is clearly not an underfunded, small-town zoo, it still makes me kind of sad to see some of those animals in their "habitats." But that's a rant for another day, or perhaps one I'll avoid altogether.

Okay, animal rights crap aside, get this: I heard recently that you can actually STAY THE NIGHT AT THE ZOO! How badass is that? Granted, it's probably a kid-oriented type of thing, but I would happily bring the kids I used to babysit for (one of them is 12, they've pretty much outgrown the need for a babysitter, which makes me sad and is also a conversation for another day) and go camp at the zoo. Probably better to do that than go with a group of friends, or worse, by myself. But still, doesn't that sound like a LOT of fun? They should totally do "adult swim" nights at least once a month. Because seriously, who doesn't want to get drunk and spend a night at the zoo?

If anyone can either confirm or deny this information, I would be much obliged. Even better if you've got a story about having done this. Spent the night at the zoo, that is.

This zoo ranks near the top for me, alongside San Diego Zoo.  Lots of animals, layout is awesome.  It's kind of out of the way from the touristy area, but not horrible to get there.  Hop on the street car and look for the shuttle van.  I personally recommend skipping the shuttle and walking through the park.  About a 20 min walk if I remember correctly.  I loved the primate exhibits here -  favorite being the orangutans.  Baby Menari is absolutely adorable.  We lucked out on our trip - we were able to show up for one of the feeding sessions and proceed to the others right after another.  They seem to be timed for this.  Definitely try to make the orangutan/gorilla and alligator feedings.

We were given a zoo/aquarium membership for Christmas, and took our first trip as members to the zoo. Oddly enough, the ticket/entrance line for members was longer than non-members on this particular day. Luckily there was another employee going through the line and checking membership cards to get us through a little bit faster.

Unlike some other touristy/kid-friendly spots, the photographers aren't too pushy. You can easily avoid them as you come up to the fountain. The other method is to let them take your photo, but then just avoid the photo purchasing booth so you don't get sucked in :)

This isn't a huge zoo, but it is a decent size to spend about 2 hours looking at everything. There is even a train to take you on a tour. It's good for all ages. Everyone loves elephants, tigers, lions, giraffes, rhinos, white alligators, and other creatures, right?

Tip: When you get to the Cajun Swamp area, keep in mind that there is a gift shop right in the middle - so you have to pass through it to see the other end of the exhibit. This isn't so great for wagons/strollers because it can get quite crowded.

Let me preface this with I actually dislike zoos, kind of a lot.  Admittedly they serve a very notable educational purpose and help subsidize all sorts of programs and research aimed at preserving and improving the lives of animals everywhere . . .  But zoos just kind of depress me.  It's like animal prison (thank you very much, I felt this way even as a child, I have issues?  Maybe you do!), with all the obnoxious jeering and screaming visitors, tightly restricted living quarters, and the doing your business in front of everyone (not that they mind the latter, not that I would even mind personally should I be in a similar position, oh hey now!).  Anyway, my friend gave me a bunch of free passes, so I figured, why not just check it out.

All right then, moving along.  As far as zoos goes, this isn't one of the more fantastically impressive ones.  There are informative educational bulletins posted throughout, so that is nice.  But many of the enclosures seem a tad too restrictive for the animals.  I realize Audubon probably doesn't receive the same amount of funding as The National Zoo, but it's just a little bit disheartening.

It's a smaller zoo, compared to the others I've been to.  I think I strolled the whole thing in less than forty-five minutes.  There are a few interactive exhibits, such as the petting zoo.

My friends and I weren't too impressed with Aububon Zoo, but it's decent enough and it's something for the kids to do.

In September, I visited the zoo for the first time in about 10 years!

It was just as I remember.  I love how big the place is and of course the animals.  I have a lot of great memories of being a kid here.  I remember riding the elephant and even have a picture of me having a camel ride!  Remember the camel rides?  Yeah, they don't do them anymore.

We went on a Sunday, so it wasn't too crowded with kids.  Weekdays during the school year are the worst, because the zoo is a field trip staple.  I remember going at least once a year, when I was in grade school.

It's in expensive enough.  I even know people who go for an afternoon and bring lunch.  A great "something to do" in the city.

Love this zoo - its easy to walk through and to get relief from the heat they have spray misting fans all over to get cooled off!  There are two white tigers and a baby orangutan and they have a nice petting zoo w/free-roaming goats.  They also have a fantastic carousel and a kiddie park.  It's the perfect size and there is always plenty of fun events that they host throughout the year.  My all time favorite is the "Boo at the Zoo"!!

    Highly recommend!

I went to the Audubon Zoo
The monkeys were not flinging poo
But the komodo dragon with his tail a-waggin'
Is coming up right behind you

You should have seen the flamingo
He knew all the local lingo
He thought he was good hanging out by the wood
Until he saw the wild dingo

The Audubon Zoo, the Audubon Zoo
I came in early and never got through
I'd still be there if not for the curfew
At the incredible unforgettable Audubon Zoo

Best zoo we have ever been to.  Were especially liked the petting zoo area.  If this is the first time at this zoo, be sure to go to guest services for a free drink oupon and cup.

I LOVE this zoo! It's no Brookfield or National Zoo, but it offers a great 3-4 hours worth of fun. The enclosures are spacious and nice to look at and the grounds are beautiful with the old oak trees. Our favorite, and most unique feature, is the Louisiana Swamp exhibit. Ever see a white alligator? You will here. It's a fun way to experience swamp life and maybe catch a zydeco show while you eat.
They also have great festivals and events here. The Swamp Festival: lots of fun and Boo at the Zoo is a great way to rev up for Halloween or spend Halloween night. They have this event for 1 or 2 weekends before Halloween and on Halloween. make sure you get your tickets early, they all sell out.

Memberships: Very worth the money if you have children under 5. You will go enough to get your money's worth. Membership also gets you into the Aquarium for free and a discounted admission at the Insectarium.

Drawbacks: They charge for things on top of admission. Carousel rides, train rides, the cool robotic dinosaur exhibit, and the new waterplay area, all extra costs. Not cool.
    Ya'll have fun!

I've been to a handful of zoos and in my experience this one is pretty impressive..

Not only do they have a lot of animals, but they are out so you can see them.  Their living areas were clean and the animals seemed reasonably happy for caged creatures.  They also had a petting zoo.  I agree with John O. the Louisiana Swamp Exhibit was quite nice.  They even had a band performing at the restaurant area.

It's a big zoo...and it's hot, but they had a place selling slushies as we were wandering around.  Yeah, I want a slushy.

We got to pet a snake and see families panic when two male tortoises tried to mate.  It was really the people that made that fun.

    Man, it was hot.

Anyway... really enjoyable and kid friendly for the most part :-)

PS  You have to visit the Audubon Zoo or else you will feel really left out when you hear a band play "They all ask'd for you".
