all i've gotta say is how blessed i feel to live next to TJoe's and this absolute lifesaver of a grocer, and they're so conveniently located right across the street from eachother!
how are they my lifesaver, you ask?
    - not only much more affordable than other grocers but FRESH and EDIBLE fruits and vegetables (and this is coming from a girl who grew up in Southern California)
    -  fresh ASIAN produce (it's owned by Koreans). think scallions, bok choy, korean squash, and the best of all - korean sweet potatoes (i seriously yelped of joy when i found these gems here.)
    - they have kimchi! 32nd street has more options and is a bit tastier, but it does the job. yay!

Let's say there are two different stores, A and B. Both of them sell gubbins. However, Store A sells gubbins that are not only higher quality gubbins than those available at Store B, but Store A ALSO sells them CHEAPER as well.

Now, you'd have to be an absolute moron to buy your gubbins at Store B when Store A is right down the street, right? Right.

And so I admit to you, friends, that I am an absolute moron. Why else would have I bought produce at Key Food, or even Trader Joe's, with Atlantic Vegetable & Food right here?

(They have sliced pineapple, grape tomatoes, blackberries, onions, raspberries, shallots, celery, peaches...every kind of fruit or vegetable you would want, all beautiful and all cheaper than any of the nearby markets.)

I suppose it's because when I've been forced to shop over here, I didn't realize that this place existed. But now that I know, I no longer have any excuse. And neither do you.

Sometimes when you go food shopping the most disappointing part of the trip is seeing the poor selection, quality, or prices of the produce. Well that's were a place like Atlantic fruit comes in where they primarily just sell produce. I haven't been that many times but from my limited experience the quality, selection, and prices are better than most places. I got a giant container of blueberries for $3 when blueberries weren't quite in season and everyone else had containers of a fraction of the size for at least the same amount of money. Luckily I find myself shopping (reluctantly) at Key Foods next door a lot so I can just stop by Atlantic Fruit for the produce that KeyFoods desperately lacks.

I have been going to Atlantic Fruit and Vegetables for months now, and my impressions over that time have changed.

    The good:
THE INCREDIBLE SELECTION OF FRUITS AND VEGETABLES. Wow! And the price -- I don't think I've ever spent more than $20 in one go at this place. Also,  I love watching the men who work there toss watermelons to each other in bucket brigade fashion as they unload the crates.

    The bad:
While I used to be particularly impressed with the taste and freshness of the produce here, I am wondering if I was naive or if the conditions have definitely changed since.

You certainly have to be picky about the produce you grab: last few times I have been in there the beets have been covered in mold, the parsnips have been soft and rotting, the cut basil bunches sit in a bucket of stagnant dirty water, dig towards the middle of the spinach bucket and you'll find it's all soggy, and for the past week or so there is a sickeningly sweet smell coming from the ENORMOUS STACK of wood crates bursting with parsley or cilantro or some kind of green that are piled five feet high in the back of the store.

Yesterday I bought a butternut squash, brought it home, spent the effort to chop it up and peel it, roasted it and at the first bite I could tell that veggie was OFF. Into the trash it went! Shame and a waste.

A previous reviewer mentioned that this place felt "suburban level clean." I'm originally from the suburbs and all I have to say is oh dear no. I'm not a clean freak who can't get over a bit of lived-in urban grunge when I'm out. However, clearly no one buys products off the back shelves or the top racks in this place often. These items are dusty and faded. Beyond the questionable rotting produce and the stagnant water, it feels like all the show is out front to attract customers (like fruit flies) but inside much gets forgotten.

I can only add one big point to what has already been said in other reviews (which by the way is all true:  freshness, quality, price... this is hands down the best place to get produce in this area).

This place is not only the best value for all vegetables that you need, but it has such a wide variety of fruits and vegetables that you actually start to generate new ideas on what to cook while you fill up your red basket.

My fiance and I have cooked soups with lemongrass, made artichoke dip from scratch, and made cocktails with ginger root all because I walked by these ingredients in this magnificent, well-stocked grocery.

*Just a heads up they have purchase-by-the-pound chocolate pretzels as well!

Summary: Great selection, good prices, excellent quality fruits and veggies in a clean store run by friendly people.

They jam a whole lot of fresh produce into this little store.

    Grade: A

Selection? Try seven varieties of mushrooms and they always carry more obscure produce like celriac.

Prices?  Better than any supermarket or market in the neighborhood with the exception of Trader Joe's.  But sometimes their specials on berries beats even that famous discount store's prices.

Quality? You know how some markets have a rancid lemon or lime or old spuds in the bin?  I've *never* seen that here.  Fresh herbs last a week or more.  The high inventory turnover contributes to the quality.  The one downer: the tomatoes aren't the best.

Clean?  It has a suburban supermarket feeling of clean.  Well lit, too.

Friendly?  On one occassion the owner weighed and tallied a basketful of produce that approached $20.  Reaching into my pocket I realized that I left my wallet at home.  He said I could come back with the money another day.

Another shoppers tip:  They sell delicious frozen Japanese ice cream treats.  Also their prices for milk, butter and beer are better than Key Foods or Garden of Eden.  A six pack of Sapporro? $9.00!

What a gem! This is THE place in Brooklyn Heights to get affordable fresh produce--from avocados to zucchini! This place is the real deal... and, seriously, they carry just about anything produce-wise that you could ever need. Plus, the produce is dirt cheap! I swear, I never spend more than $5 when I visit Atlantic Vegetable & Food, and I always walk out of there with a bag full of fresh fruit & veggies! All of this, plus this place is located only a few blocks from our house! If you're looking for polished concrete floors, sleek modern architecture, and uniformed stock boys located at every corner to answer your every produce question, then this isn't the place for you. If you don't mind a no-nonsense, unpretentious, ma & pa style store, then you'll definitely be impressed with this place.

Def a fan of Atlantic Veg and Food.  They have a huge selection of fruits and veggies.  Its saves me a trip to chinatown as I can get most of the produce I need only  few blocks away and not have to deal  with my peoples rudeness.  The prices are more than reasonable, but I do think you have to be through in checking your items are in good condition.  Ive been enough times to know what turns fast and will have at least a week long shelf life.

This place is an absolute gem. I go out of my way and lug massive bags of fruits and veggies home on the subway because it's the best place I've found in the city, and I think it's worth the back pain.

The produce is fresh, cheap, always delicious and well-stocked.

The store is clean and the people who work there are great. .. I love the Grand Army Greenmarket, but Atlantic Fruit wins. Prices here are cheaper and they're open seven days a week. #WIN

Great produce market - nicely sized with a wide selection of fruits, veggies and herbs, along with some asian specialty products and dry goods.

Pros: Very reasonably priced, clearly laid out, a helpful but not intrusive staff, and  decently fast service.

I would give one last star if it had a bigger selection of spices, bulk items (nuts/etc), and some more exotic selections of produce, but it's a great place for your everyday produce needs.

This is what I want from a fruit & veggie joint: fresh produce, clearly marked prices, and a clean store. I get all 3 here.

They have lower prices than Fresh Direct, for sure, and most of their produce seems to be the same type you'd find at an Asian supermarket- fresh and firm but probably not organic and possibly from very far away.

Cold drinks & beer in the back, Asian prepared foods in the fridge/freezer and Asian & Italian gourmet items on the shelves. Nice people working here, as well.

Great little place! Everyone who works there is very friendly (which is an AWESOME change from the grumpy staff @ Key Foods) and will willingly reach for items high up on the shelves. This is key in my under 5 foot world..

As for the fruit and veggies, pretty fresh and not too expensive. I prefer to shop at the farmers market, but when I need some extra stuff I love going here. The random assortment of asian/asian-ish food items in the back is also fun for when you need random ingredients.

A hidden gem.  Wonderful fresh veggies, best prices in the area, right down the street from Sahadi's, Trader Joe's, Cook's Companion, etc.  They also have a nice selection of fresh herbs.  And, they're always really friendly.

Fantastic, fresh selection and great prices. The downtown Brooklyn farmers market is close but this has a selection of vegetables that are almost as good and the owners are friendly and nice.

The produce is fresh & the selection is wide & exotic. The older gentleman who seems to run the place is kind in a quiet way. I got a whole watermelon once and he told me how much it was going to be and asked if that was OK before he rang it up. I guess others have balked before (it was about $11) or I looked poor that day. They've got a small selection of bulk nuts & trail mixes upfront, though nothing to rival nearby Sahadi's. My only complaint is that the aisles are kind of cramped & their workers are always bringing things through on handcarts. Expect traffic jams. Also: long lines.

I am so happy I found this place. Awesome produce selection. I have not been to the farmers markets, but prior to finding this god-send, I was stuck shopping at the dreadful pathmark at atlantic center and key foods (even worse).  Now my trip goes something like Key Foods for basic staples (hate this place), Atlantic Vegetable, Sahadi's, Damascus bakery. Hooray!

Sometimes referred to as the Green Pea, this is basically a Korean deli on top of their produce. Located on the gourmands row of Atlantic Ave a few doors west of Sahadi's this place comes through every week. It might not be the cheapest but it is certainly the freshest and most consistent with quantity and quality. It's the kind of place that makes you pick up your hot dog buns and juice at the Key Food and then you get on with your serious produce shopping here. In addition they have fresh tofu, an assortment of nuts and fruits (if Sahadi's is packed) and an entire mini Asian grocery in the back. They do some prepared/packaged stuff including carrots, celery, garlic if you're into that sort of thing. I also think they have the most extensive fresh herb selection of any of the groceries. Who needs that Pacific Street rip off with this around the corner? They don't get five stars because it could be cheaper, but then again I'm not working a shift any time soon.
