Review from Jess H.
Brooklyn, NY
This has fast become one of my favorite bookstores IN THE WORLD. I was in Bookcourt (also excellent, two blocks away), and heard the folks working there talking about this place in hushed tones. They were saying things like, "I try to go every day. There is always that book I never know I needed."
I've found that to be completely correct. They have secondary titles by authors you love, plus that bestseller from 9 years ago that's now hard to find. They have books your friends were reading in college and you forgot to borrow. They have the issue of October that was dedicated to Bataille, and that book you've been trying to find used for years since it's $25 new. As well as leatherbound books with glorious illustrations from the 1870s--for $10.
I've bought:
Bakhtin, The Dialogic Imagination, $10
an Isaac Asimov paperback, $2
Mistress Masham's Repose, T.H. White, $6 (hardcover)
Washington Square, Henry James, $3
We, Yevgeny Zamyatin, $2
Light in August, William Faulkner, $2
and rare collections of essays by Roland Barthes and Virginia Woolf, $2-$6.
As you can see, these are rather amazing prices. I've seen nothing over $10, and most is $2-$6. Oh, and they also have great Art and Architecture, Poli Sci, and other sections...I mostly look in Fiction and Criticism.
They're not getting as much business as they need to, and have been teetering on bankruptcy since moving to Brooklyn. Please show your support, and buy here. It'll even be cheaper than buying it online. -

I notice that this store's listing is still active, but sadly this wonderful used bookstore has been closed for awhile.
would go there often as they had a good selection of art books, but alas they have closed shop. -

I found they are closing. I wish they were just kidding but I guess they are not? I will give them one more star if they think twice of their sad plan.

When I get there, I will edit this review and add a star. I read one review and was convinced I would love this place, so I am going, and I'll add to the review. I read that this place needs support. Buy used books! Go here! Keep our NYC bookstores alive!! While you're there travel over to Book Court and Community Bookstore and Greenlight, etc. All good places to go and all a different experience. NOW I AM SEEING THAT THEY WERE GOING OUT OF BUSINESS IN MAY?! ARE THEY GONE? I was recently up in the Catskills and journeyed to one of my favorite bookstores on route 28 near Shokan. GONE. Rooms of books, gone. This just shouldn't happen.

So I heard they were closing and I went over to check them out. It seems like there's a reason they're going out of business. Most of the books there are yellowed, smelly, and not worth buying. They made the mistake of buying every single used book they could get their hands on... leave it to hipsters to have a solid business plan.
That being said, I realize that indie bookstores are great for the community and they seemed like nice guys. I hear the owner has a few other indie stores so he'll be fine for a bit. The problem is even though I wanted to buy books at 30% off, I just couldn't find any at a decent quality or price. -

I've sold books here twice. The employees are always really nice and friendly. I haven't bought anything yet, but every day is another opportunity.

Brooklyn, NY
A great place to browse & an even better place to purchase used books. The selection is extensive and fairly organized for the amount of books that are housed inside the narrow-ish space. Today I lucked out, as they were having a 20% off everything sale. I think the sale runs until sometime in early February, so get there soon & bring your environmentally friendly tote bags to throw all your new purchases in.

Review from Maxx C.
Washington, DC
Formerly known as 12th Street books in Greenwich Village, this is a serious store for people looking for art and scholarly-type books, although the fiction section is pretty good. Their selection is extensive, the best I've seen in Brooklyn, and prices, although not low, are fair considering the quality and condition of the books.

Review from Salvatore R.
Brooklyn, NY
The place is cute but it's quite tight. Books are stacked wonderfully haphazardly, but there's no room to roam around, to enjoy the ambience, to take in the books themselves. It feels more like a tiny library than a bookstore. Impressive, and I'd like to go back.

The Atlantic Bookshop is a well-curated used bookstore with a good selection of art books. This bookstore has a lot of good stuff and the prices are very reasonable.
When I visited the Atlantic Bookshop, I spent most of my time in the art book section. I found/bought a hardcover book, with good color plates, on Joseph Cornell for $14. It is in very good condition and the cover price is $45. I also took home a copy of a monograph on Kathy Prendergast in perfect condition for $7. For $8, I got a 1969 dictionary on art terms & techniques in excellent condition. There were over a dozen other books I would have happily bought for the price asked but I decided I needed to limit myself to three.
My friend bought a good translation of Crime and Punishment, an Italo Calvino book, a book on the history of sushi, and a couple other books, all in good condition, for $5-8 each.
The Atlantic Bookshop is not the most comfortable place to browse but I had a hard time leaving even after being in there for over an hour. My friend and I tried to leave many times but we'd only take a few steps before one of us would find something s/he found fascinating and then the other would find something else s/he wanted to read.
The proprietor is friendly (in a mild mannered sort of way) and clearly knows books. I really want this place to stay open, so please go check it out!
