Review from Jon S.
Best restaurant in the area around First Beach for food quality - hard pressed to find a bad dish.
Went for Mother's Day brunch this year. Spread consisted of an excellent balance of breakfast (eggs, French toast sticks, eggs benedict, fruit) and lunch (seafood mix, stuffed poultry, soups). Desserts (bar cookies, chocolate-dipped strawberries) were excellent too.
I'm one frugal ombre, but for $20 this was a steal for a holiday brunch. It's normally $15 and is offered every Sunday. Reason for price is that drinks are not included. For a view of the beach and super close to Newport (you can see the Cliff Walk), it's worth it.
Get a reservation here folks, especially with the summer nearing. The chef is a known quantity around here. -

I went for the buffet this Sunday morning and man were we all impressed.
The spread was gorgeous and the food was awesome. I had eggs Benedict, a fish casserole, scrambled eggs, fresh baked blue berry muffin, fresh chocolate covered strawberries, bacon, grilled potatoes, and fresh fruit.
They also had a baked ham and brisket to serve as well as omelets. Overall a very nice place right on the water with great views. For $15 that was a can't miss buffet.
The one draw back is the hostess was pretty clueless. Your job is to seat people not reply "Oh a party of 7? Let me get the manager" Really? It's not rocket science and it being the weekend ONLY large parties were coming in so she made it a huge cluster while waiting to get seated. That being said we arrived before they opened and were seated before the buffet started at 10:30AM.
Overall a great place with a high quality buffet. -

In the summer, this is the place to be. Let me clarify. If you LIVE here in Newport, on TUESDAYS this is the place to be. Other than that, you get juice heads and fake boobs galore.
Tuesdays is filled with all local in the biz peeps. This is our Saturday. There's vollyball, live music, and ice cold beers flowing.
Get there on the earlier side cause seats always fill up.
The food is meh, but the vibe is great. Sunshine, cocktails & your best friends. It makes for a good day. -
Review from Alex S.
I'm sorry, I'm just a sucker for restaurants directly on the beach. It's amazing.
Not, to be fair, I did not eat here, but instead, attended a wedding held here. So I can't talk about your normal dining experience. What I can talk about though is being at an event here, and dammit if it wasn't wonderful.
First of all, the view. The wedding was held right off the beach, which you get to by crossing over the patio. While we waited for it to begin, we hung out and just watched the ocean. People swam, fish, played volleyball, ran and just enjoyed the day ... and it was almost October. Fantastic.
After the ceremony, which was held directly on the beach, we went to the second floor, which was perfect for large events - great waiting area with bar and a ballroom with dance floor. I do kind of wish the bar was closer to the dancing, so I didn't have to keep walking across everyone to get a drink, but that's just me being lazy.
My favorite part of this area though was the second floor balcony, which, again, looked out onto the ocean. Beautiful.
The ABC catered the event as well so I got to try some of their delicious food. Mmm! Amazing appetizers like stuffed cheese mushrooms and a great spread of fruits and cheese and crackers. Then the read entree, where I snagged a steak. Yes. Of course, I ordered it medium well and it was pinker than the dickens (as was everyone's at the table, so I'm not even sure why they asked how we wanted it cooked. My brother sent his back and it still came to him red red red.) Ah well, still delicious.
The staff was friendly and quick and really great, which is always nice at a wedding.
This is a great spot if you're looking to hold an event, hands down.Listed in: Alex's Whirlwind Adventure…

Review from Kelli P.
My husband and I ate her last week and it was really quite good. This was not our first time dining here, but it was our first time dining here alone.
We sat in the lounge so we could enjoy the live jazz that apparently happens quite frequently because there was a flock of old biddies in the corner swooning and dancing with the band as if they were old friends. It was cute. The music was real good too.
Our waiter was great! He was prompt, friendly, funny, and personable. I got a lobster special, but I could not eat it because I am pregnant and did not realize that the smell of lobster makes me sick. :( Booooo.
My husband got a mighty looking salad which he devoured! It should did look yummy!!!
I love the beach setting and I love that it looks high end, but by no means do you have to rush home to get your husbands jacket and tie and your peal necklace. It is a nice atmosphere!! -

Let me state first of all, I would probably not try this place in the summer because I'm not into the hot bod bar on the beach scene. However, if you're looking for good food in a nice place with a million dollar view, then ABC is definitely for you. Decent wine list and generous portions of great seafood. They have an early bird special that is unbelievably inexpensive and totally worth the drive from anywhere in the state.

I really liked Atlantic Beach Club. The location- excellent, the staff- friendly, the food- great. And to top it off-lots of parking.
On my visit, although there was live music inside, it was such a beautiful day that the beach side patio was the must place to be seated. Very cool to have a sandy beach and a pounding ocean as a dining back drop.
As for the food, everyone at my table enjoyed every dish down to the last morsel. Nobody had any complaints. From the starters to the entrees, almost everything ordered was seafood. Fried clams, lobster roll, lobster Newburg, fisherman's platter, clam chowder, and the fish and chips. Some of the people at the table ordered beer. All commented on the good variety of beers on tap.
When I return to Newport I will definitely be back to sample the menu a bit more. Happy hour food looked like a good deal so I would try to time my next visit around that happy hour then stay for dinner. -

This place has been perched here for years and has a huge following of die hard diners, but the food is not going to make you write to The Food Network with raves and over the top compliments. Simple is best with regards to the food. Boiled lobster or a burger- that kind of thing. You'll see rice pilaf, boiled broccoli and a simple house salad on the menu. It's a large, spacious restaurant that is a bit sterile, yet offers a lovely view of the beach. And some people show up here every Saturday night regardless. It's a family tradition.
The Atlantic Beach Club really comes alive in the summer with its outdoor deck and bar. You can make friends easily, join in a volley ball game, hear some great music and feel like you've been transported to Miami Beach. It's low key but vibrant and being right on the beach makes it unique. There are no other bars or restaurants like this in the Newport area.
Order up a summer drink, kick off your sandals and slather on some sun tan cream. It's Newport and it's summer time. Enjoy every second of it here on the beach.Listed in: Newport

After my 17km cliff walk I was in need of a late lunch and well deserved cold beer :P
Staff were friendly and we were seated quickly in the lounge. Our waitress was lovely and quick to check on us and make sure we had everything we needed. Didn`t have to flag her down once - she was on the ball.
I had the Tilapia which came with scallops, rice pilaf, and veggies.
Fish was tender and cooked perfectly in a garlic butter drizzle, along with bread crumbs. Scallops were also cooked great with cheese on top. Usually I would question the cheese topping but it was delish!
This was a great meal and a great setting to relax and cool down.
I find in Newport dinners tend to be expensive - and you`re not always getting the greatest quality. If you want the good seafood you have to go to these fancy places that will cost you $28 a plate.
If you eat your hot meal at lunch, it`s cheaper (tilapia was $12) and you have a great portion for less the price.
To finish off, I saved room for creme brulee.
They served it with a strawberry and a biscotti - I was stuffed!
Creme brulee was rich and creamy, as it should be :)
I flipped through the dinner menu - it seemed to have similiar food just higher priced.
In the day time you can party outside with $3 heinekins by the beach, there seems to be a younger crowd. The outside patio is steps away from the beach and there is a volleyball net.
At night it`s a nice dinner setting if you want something a little more classy.
Tomorrow I have to go back for mussels! :P -

On a clear summer evening, you simply cannot beat the views from the back porch -- literally right on First Beach.
Recently visited for a wedding and we were treated to the most beautiful sunset from the banquet room, which was completely lined with windows. A wonderful atmosphere for a festive celebration.
Food was good -- not the best ever, but nicely prepared and service was friendly (again, remembering that we were in the banquet room and it is not easy to serve 100+ at the same time).
Overall the location was a lovely spot for a wedding. -
Review from Kelsey F.
I've been here a few times. Last memorial day weekend I went with a few friends. It was a really nice weekend and ABC was packed! The outdoor bar/patio is a great time in the summer. It's really casual, good bar food, great frozen drinks, and a lot of times they have a good band playing.
The Astro Bomb is awesome! Remember the red white and blue bomb pops from when you were younger? Well take that, blend it up, add some liquor. and bam there is your astro bomb!
I also came here this past weekend for my sister's rehearsal dinner. It was outside next to the patio under the tent. The servers were great. They were friendly and attentitve. We had steak dinners and lobsters. I am not a lobster fan so went for the steak. It was cooked well and pretty tender. It came over mashed potatos that were good but not great. I can't speak for the lobster but everyone seemed to enjoy them. For dessert we got this strawbeery shortcake thing that was super scrumptious!
Overall my experience with ABC has been great. Their indoor restaurant is a bit fancier I've heard but as for the outside areas - a super fun summer spot! -
Review from Julie Y.
Oh my gosh. I LOVE this place.
We ate inside for the first time on my birthday and I was very happy about the steamers. They looked clean and tasted amazing for a really good price. We were there for an early lunch and it was slightly cold outside so there was no one on the deck.
The next 5 times we were there it was sunny and we were out on the deck (which has a different and smaller menu). It's the perfect place to eat at right after laying in the sun or swimming! For less and $20 we got 3 stuffies ($2.50 each!!) clam chowder, a beer and doughboys.
This place rocks my socks off! -

My mother in law invited us to brunch at ABC on Sunday. The food was good and the service was OK. For $25/person, it is worth what you get to eat. The french toast sticks are great and the fish and chicken were really good. Service was kinda slow but for what is it worth, it is worth the trip.

I came here a couple of times during the summer of 2010. This place is like the essence of summer--- beach balls, volleyball, icy drinks, sandy beaches, and plenty of sun.
Food here is fine, but honestly there are more interesting places in Newport to go for dinner.
You really need to come here on a hot Saturday afternoon and just hang out in the outdoor seating area in the back. This is one of the highlights of Newport. -
Review from Mark S.
I was here for a wedding reception last weekend and had a great time. The function area is upstairs and has incredible views. The food was really good which surprised me. I had the Filet Mignon which was awesome. It was cooked perfectly and seasoned just right. The only bad part about the meal was the salad which had way too much dressing. I am not a sweets guy but I thought dessert was great.
I was only in the main downstairs part for maybe an hour. A bunch of us grabbed drinks at the downstairs bar before the reception started and the staff were all very friendly and attentive. Considering we bum rushed the place with about 90 people clamoring for booze they handled it like pros and smiled the whole time.
I've never been in the summer but can imagine it's fantastic for people watching. -

Came here on a weekend night with the family. Looks like it could be a decent spot judging by the number of cars in the parking lot. Not only was it packed, but there was a wedding going on there too. Straight up, the food was bland and the service was poor. This place probably relies heavily on tourist traffic coming through. Felt like I was a a bad wedding myself with this blah food, cooked with no inspiration or taste. Waiters barely showed up and were late and indifferent to our plight of waiting so long. I'll never go back to this place.

Mixed feelings about this place.
Ate here at a corporate event and got the scallops Nantucket. It was a very good dish and after this experience I would rate the place at 4 stars.
Another time we went during lunch and I got the half soup half sandwich. I got the chicken salad sandwich and the chowder. The size of the sandwich and soup was small, but I can deal with that. Based on the food I would give it a 4...however we went during the summer and it was hard to enjoy the lunch with what seemed to be a Jersey party going right outside. I guess if you are into that then by all means go. So 3 stars.
Then we just recently went again for dinner. I ordered the clam cake sliders and they were terrible. They were so dry I basically had to have them slathered in sauce and still needed to drink water to get them down. These were so bad. 2 stars.
Lastly we went there for another corporate dinner - this time a buffet. The caeser salad was good and the pasta was super tasty. Some of the other options were not as good, but it was easily overlooked because of the salad and pasta option. 4 stars.
As far as service they are good, however they arent very friendly - then again I dont know how friendly I would be if that was my job.
The atmosphere is great - when there isnt a raging kegger going on. However it seems that when we went alone the food just wasnt up to par, but when we went for an event the food was great. -

Guido Beach! I think my visit was biased based on some of these other reviews about the wonderful food and service... I came here for the outdoor beach scene only on a busy in season weekend... More skin and tattoos than you can shake a finger at! So much so that a sweet little old lady used her walker to shimmy over to me to comment about how these young hooligans and their "danged tattoos" are ruining everything for everyone.. (I seriously doubt her eyesight was good enough to even notice my SIX TATTOOS!) c'mon lady! True story, kinda funny and awkward moment.. Service was good, there is live music, beach volleyball, gorillas and guidettes on the prowl all over the place... This place has a decidedly younger vibe and more jerseyish clientele than anywhere else I stopped at in Newport.. so in other words.. I felt right at home! Drinks were kinda weak, service was decent but these girls each had a ton of tables and a big crowd to mosh through not to mention ancient PDA order taking devices that appeared to not work at all.. They may as well have been a zach morris cell phone!
So I cant really comment on the food or the inside, but the outside is a good day drinking chill out spot.. good times!Listed in: Outdoor Dining

Great food and great service. Went there last Wednesday night and the "$13 for anything on the menu" deal is fantastic. I had the Johnny's Atlantic Fisherman's Platter and it was very fresh. Had leftovers yesterday and still fantastic.

I have never actually been inside this building. I don't really see the point. As far as I am concerned, Johnny's ABC is good for one thing: DRINKS ON THE BEACH! The back patio is right on the beach, and you can come and go as you please. There are few (if any) things in life better than a cold beer and hot sand!

What an experience! First, let me get this out there:
ALL ENTREES $12.95 on Wednesdays of winter months, ending at the end of April (lobster excluded).
That means you can do like I just did and get filet mignon (normally $27.95) served with a delicious bernaise sauce, mashed 'taters, and salad for $13! What a DEAL.
The food is definitely 4-star at least, had they not slightly overcooked the filet I'd tip them the extra food star. But the price and the service earn them that star anyway.
If you're going for the Wednesday night deal (up until end of April) I recommend you go at 5 or at 8 - if you go in the middle there, you're going to spend a lot of time waiting. Locals know about this special and cash in on it. -

Great stripper and juice-monkey peoplewatching!!!
They make unbelieveable fried seafood - the scallops are huge and melt in your mouth. Try the clam strips too!
Margot is the best server there is....look for a long blonde ponytail! She will hook you up big time. -

Ahahaaha. ABC. The place to show off your tan, pecs, abs, ass, boob job, tats, or whatever else needs exhibiting after a day on the beach.
They have a live band and cranky bartenders. Be prepared to overpay for the drink you've waited forever for - but it IS the place to be. Oh and you couldn't pay me to eat the food. See you there Saturday.Listed in: My Newport Haunts

Today's pelting rain and whipping wind may be suitable for those on surfboards but, for the Landlubbers on Easton Beach, we find ourselves nestled in the cozy confines of the Atlantic Beach Club in Newport, RI. Although a self described "pavilion", the lounge is inviting and the dinning area's roomy yet intimate. Please tell me...what culinary mandate requires that every "clam chowda" from Watch Hill to Federal Hill be lovingly sampled? This crustacean zeal delights and sooths our Yankee palette at the Atlantic Beach Club. Creamy but not too thick, with understated hints of onion, bacon and dill; the chowder here is fit for the most discerning sampler.
Surf's up...

3.5 Stars
Two years ago this was a 3 star place for me. The food is clearly just middle of the road quality. Then you have twenty and thirty somethings at the outside bar performing mating rituals and the geriatrics doing the same in the lounge inside. Sadly I'm in neither group but I do like Jazz. I grew up going to Newport Jazz Festivals and listening to "Jazz After Hours" on BRU as a kid. Saturday night the fam was too pooped to go out so I went alone and had a nice dinner at the inside bar and was treated to an outstanding trio(#) playing the standards for the blue hair set.
* Pricey and you need to dress for the dining room.
* Oysters and necks done right, but just an average raw bar.
* Newburg is the best Lobster choice.
* Steak is good here.
* Excellent mixologist on staff, and meal service far better at the bar.
* Extensive wine list with a very reasonable markup. Cheap even.

ABC your the beach club for me!
Oh how I miss thee! 7-7-07
Went to 2nd Beach to catch some sun, and then up to ABC for a cold beverage! I haven't been back since the 1st day I went but someday I will....
Outdoor bar on the beach
Loud music
Live band
Amstel Light girls (only for the day)
Old men bustin' a move
Expensive drinks
Pretty people in swimsuits everywhere
All around a good time
Now that's the type of atmosphere I like to be involved in! I felt like I was at MTV beach house for a minute.
I went and had a great time with a few girlfriends and a few guy friends, one friend which passed away since then .. so it'll def bring back memories going back there, nothing but great memories that is!
Definitely a place for a good time.Listed in: Fun Places on the Water

Kudos to this place for accomodating a party of 30 and doing separate checks for all 30 of us. There are not many places that are willing to do that. They gave us our own room which was nice.
Their patrons are mostly older.. so if you're looking for something trendy, this is not it. The decor is nice though.
The prices aren't too bad.. ended up with the bouillabaise which had a wide variety of seafood in a tomato broth. The tomato broth was WAY TOO salty which was dissapointing.. the clams, mussels, and shrimp were good... unfortunately, I could tell that the crab leg placed in my food was frozen. But it didn't cost an arm and leg.. so it's okay.
The clam chowder was pretty good... more clams and less potatoes.. just the way I like it.
I bet the view would be awesome when the weather is actually nice too... wouldn't know though.. it was pouring rain when I went. -

Wow. I'm surprised no one review this yet!
I grabbed lunch here yesterday! What a great day to sit outside on the patio ($5 cover charge). Food is decent, but what I great view of First Beach, and you can eat and tan at the same time.
Seems very busy, so called ahead for reservation if you want to sit inside. Parking could be challenging.
Since this is right on the beach, you should def take a walk before or after ABC. -

Stopped by the Atlantic Beach Club after an afternoon at the Newport Mansions. Found on Yelp! Thank you to Chris P. for noting the $12.95 Wednesday dinner specials. We weren't sure that they were in force until we asked about the specials and were told there were none because of the dinner pricing.
As far as the restaurant itself goes, it was perfect for a family dinner out, but probably only at the price we got. Otherwise, it would have been over-priced. I particularly enjoyed the appetizers: fried calamari and steamed littlenecks. Both were well-spiced and very tasty-- didn't need butter or even lemon. It had been quite a while since I had had clams and I really enjoyed the garlic and red pepper broth. Yummy!
Check this out on a Wednesday night, for some solid New England goodness. -

We had our wedding reception here in the Pavillion this summer and it was amazing! Elaine and her team do a fantastic job throughout the wedding planning process! The appetizers were amazing (get the mini clamcake & chowder!), as was the food & its presentation. The servers were incredibly attentive and professional. We had our cocktail hour on the patio and it was beautiful. The room itself is gorgeous... such a big dance floor and beautiful, neutral decor.
My only complaint was that we had been promised our wedding could go later if the dance floor was still full (which it was), and the woman presiding over the event (not Elaine, who we had worked with and who had made the promise) made us end much earlier. I would suggest getting promises like that in writing... and asking for Elaine to be present for your event. She is the best wedding planner... this other one was not as impressive.
In terms of cost, it was more affordable than the other Newport options we investigated and comparable to others. There is no site or other hidden fees, just the package fee for the food. We loved that. -

Nice road name for this place. This is right along the beach with a great view. First and foremost, proper attire is required.
We came here for the morning after brunch for our cousin's wedding. The food was very good and the service was standard. Even though it is the winter season, I am sure the locals come here for brunch every Sunday, especially if the weather is nice.

$60 for a clambake:
- small cup of chowder
- small lobster
- netted bag with
- overcooked frozen corn
- 4 clams
- 8 mussells (way overcooked)
- misc other not-appetizing food
- Strawberry Shortcake
The brought my wife a lobster that looked diseased. She went ahead and gave it a try and had to spit it out. I told the waitress, who gave me an attitude. I was told "The chef put it out, so it must be fine. There are no other lobsters available." Even though there were three more plates for the group in front of her.
I would be embarrassed to charge that price for the food and service provided. -

This place is very well known to the younger crowd as a happening place. I always thought of it as pub type food place catering to the young drinking crowd. Boy was I wrong. Went inside to be greeted with efficient and pleasant hostesses who organized who wanted to go and sit where (either in or out). Being from New England and being in beach clothes we wanted outside as days where the sun shines warmly can be few and far inbetween. It was busy but not overly so and after a 20 minute wait we were seated outside. If you sit on the inside you have to be dressed properly (not in beach clothes) and the atmoshere is a little more upscale than outside. The waitress was extremely friendly and just wonderful throughout the entire meal making suggestions and accomodations. We ordered a variety of seafood, burgers, fries, onion rings, stuffies and chowda and all were quite delicious. The food was plentiful enough and reasonable enough also. Great for people watching. Love sitting back and watching the younger generation trying to impress each other and just having a good time. Lively music also added to the shere "fun" of the place. I would recommend ABC Club and will gladly return again should the opportunty present itself.

Took the wife for Valentine's day dinner. The waiter was remarkable, his knowledge of the menu was outstanding. His situational awareness was above and beyond; he maintained an atmosphere that made for an enjoyable experience - he worked with the chef to time each course of the meal to be prepared and arrive in a timely fashion yet with enough time in between for us to have a relaxing, quiet dinner. The food was outstanding and well worth the price. Highly recommended!

This spot sits on one of the two Newport beaches in Middletown and has an outdoor deck and bar in the summer so you can basically be beach level and drink in the sun. It is a large place and on the off seasons fills up with locals, some scary that come out of the wood work. On season it is the place to hang out for a nice frozen drink. The food is terrible, more bar food and fried garbage than anything tasty. I would say go grab a drink but don't bother with the food, its a waste of time.
