This is a great quiet place for a family day at the beach. Love it here! My son and I got to see the sun rising during our service project for the Great Visit Florida Beach Walk back in October. That made me appreciate the area even more, walking a mile along the beautiful coastline watching the birds wandering the sand in the morning sun.

Caution: There are no bathrooms or businesses along the beach, but there is a shower to rinse off sand before you get back into the car.

Atlantic Beach is pretty much the residential beach of Jacksonville's many different beaches. Most of it's access points are tucked back into the beautiful ocean front neighborhood, and most of the people who use this beach are actual residents.

This means that Atlantic Beach is quiet, peaceful, relaxing... calm. This is the calm beach. Kids wander through the streets with surf boards tucked under their arms. People young and old ride around on bikes in bikinis. Families sit under tents in the white sand, building sand castles, reading, enjoying life.

There are access points available for the public, so you don't have to live there to use it. But, it can be a little intimidating to get back there and find them if you don't know what you are looking for. It is a neighborhood, after all. If you want a calm day at the beach, though, this is where you should head. Just suck it up, act like you know what you are doing, and you will be fine.

It's such a nice place. It's relaxing. It's soothing. It's beautiful. Just what a beach should be.

Okay I'm basically going to base my opinion on Atlantic beach FL on my time living here for a year. I stayed out here back in 09 when I moved from CA. Anyways first thing I noticed about the town for a beach community its very slow. The residential areas were too quite during the summer days, and didn't seem to have a lively atmosphere. Even the beach was mainly dead. I guess it could be bad or good, but im so used to seeing people and activity in a beach community coming from southern Cali beaches. The beach was very clean though as was the city. And the cost of living is like renting a room here in Cali. So its very cheap. Also the nightlife was okay had a few bars, but same type of military crowds in each place. So that's kinda of a downer. As for the woman in Atlantic beach...ummm nothing compared to southern cali woman. Overall its a nice city but its just to slow, and not enough nightlife for me. Maybe I'm just being biased, from being out of state I dunno.

Of all the beaches on Florida's First Coast, I think I like Atlantic Beach best of all.  Really it's one of the most serene places around, with its two miles of white, wide, sandy beaches and picturesque dunes.  It doesn't hurt that it's mostly residential and not crawling with dirty teenagers and sketchy beach bums (unlike its illustrious neighbor Jacksonville Beach).  In all of Atlantic Beach, there's not one traffic light nor is there a speed limit over 25 (unless you count Mayport Road).  If you're looking for a calm, relaxed day at the beach, this is the place to visit.

The homes lining the shores of Atlantic Beach are indeed grand and impressive, and taking a lazy bike ride down Beach Ave to check out all the brightly-painted, funky cool beach homes is one of my favorite ways to spend an afternoon.  Everyone is so friendly and Beach Ave is very bicycle and pedestrian friendly, something I miss living on the other side of the ditch.  If the tide's low you can even ride your bike along the tightly-packed sands of the beach itself.  I can't count the number of times I've taken a walk along Atlantic Beach and had an entire stretch of sand and ocean to myself (especially in the cooler months).  But I also like that the community gathers at the beach on holidays or to watch fireworks over the ocean for Fourth of July or other events.  Not to mention the other public spaces like lush Hanna Park and Howell Park and Jack Russell Park.  I'm not much of a beach or 'burbs gal, but I have to admit that Atlantic Beach really is a special place.
