Review from Leiana J.
I really enjoy climbing at Atlanta Rocks. It's a very friendly environment. Great place to meet other people who are interested in outdoor activities. There's plenty of selection of routes. They offer bouldering, top roping and lead climbing- as well as classes.
I have seen a lot of online deals (for example, the groupon I used to get started here). Because of the excellent staff and friendly community, this is the perfect place for someone to learn how to climb and to sharpen their skills!
For those who try to avoid crowds, it tends to get busy in the evening, around 7 or 8pm. The crowd isn't so bad before or after those times. -

I finally got up the motivation to go and try indoor rock climbing for the first time, and it was totally worth it. We tried the quick climb option ($15 for 6 climbs), and it was a fun, short workout that you really felt the next day. Although try to not to be intimidated if you find yourself out-climbed by a bunch of 9-year-olds, like I did. Those spider monkeys can climb anything.
Nevertheless, despite my sore arms and the over-motivated birthday party crowd from the prior day, I enjoyed myself so much that I dragged a different friend back the next day to go do it all again. We'll definitely be taking the full intro class soon to learn how to belay.
The staff is friendly and helpful, offering up challenges for you as you go ("just use the yellow stones this time!"), and being super encouraging when you feel like you're about to die of exhaustion up there.
Really fun - I'll definitely be back. Thanks, Atlanta Rocks!Comment from David T. of Atlanta Rocks! Indoor Rock Climbing Gym 12/22/2011

I had a fun time at Atlanta Rocks. After sitting on a LivingSocial deal for months, I finally found a free weekend to go. I did the two-hour supervised rock climb, which required a reservation. They use one staff member for every six climbers. The staff member acts as the belayer and also gives you instruction if you're new to climbing.
There were only four climbers in our group and we practically had the entire 12,000 square foot gym to ourselves. It was pretty awesome. This was the last reservation window (6-8pm) on a Saturday.
Amy P. was our belayer and she was great. She was friendly, patient with beginners, good at giving climbing tips and advice, and always upbeat. It really helps to have cool staff members like her to lighten the mood. The rest of the Atlanta Rocks! staff was nice as well.
In two hours, the four of us completed about 8 to 9 climbs. After starting our first climb on the beginner's wall, we had free reign to choose whichever stations we wanted for the rest of the session. The gym has over 50 top-rope stations to choose from with varying difficulties. Each climb is designed and rated by staff members. There's are sheets of paper you can refer to for information on each station and it's difficulty rating. Some of the walls have auto-belay devices so no human belayer is needed.
We had a leisurely time with Amy and were able to go at our own pace. Since we were completing climbs pretty fast, we took several breaks. It's a good idea to bring some cold drinks like water or Gatorade. You can also buy drinks on-site.
They have lockers here, but no locks. I felt the gym was very safe and several people, including myself, just left our bags out on the floor. However, if you have valuables, you can store them behind the staff desk for free.Listed in: Atlanta Activities

I finally used my living social deal that I purchased almost a year ago. They started me off with a class that teaches you the basic knots and how to belay(climbing technique). i had two other people in the class with me. The class was short and to the point but very informative. After the class we were free to climb until closing time. They have many different walls to climb with degrees of difficulty. While i was there I saw two little girls around 7 or 8 climbing so don't be afraid to try it. The staff and the climbers(most are regulars) are extremely helpful to beginners. They also have courses that you can climb solo if you don't have a partner. Its great place to take a date, better than the ole movie and dinner. Be prepared you will exert some energy and you body will feel it the next day(its good pain though).

Check out this response from the GM of ATL rocks! He really does listen and cares about his climbers.
"Hello Thao,
Thanks for your review of Atlanta Rocks! I'm glad you mentioned the Bouldering! I think during or right before your visit, we were in a revitalizing the Boulder project. All holds from section to section have been stripped and cleaned and then reset. I hate tape for the very reason you commented on because of the smearing and it always needs to be replaced. I hope on your next visit we will have this done and you are a little happier with that. We do try! Thx for the comments of the water system as well! I think this is a first!

Review from Jill S.
First time rock climber here, so I really have nothing to compare against...
As part of my 30 before 30 list, I wanted to try out this rock climbing thing and with the help of a pair of gift certificates, I recruited my executive producer (inside joke) and went to tackle the unknown.
My first thought - intimidating. I've been on roller coasters with heights that more than crush these, even zip lined in a rain forest, but for some reason I was nervous. Could it be a result of this harness I stepped my legs into? Or the fact that I was being spotted or belayed, whatever you call it, by a girl I weighed 3x her size? Either way, I tried it and I like it! It was definitely a fitness challenge as well as a mental check that, hey, if I fall, at least I'll be cushioned by recycled rubber from shoes and tires
(YIKES...OCD MOMENT...ok, phew, over it)
I do agree with David Z., the ladies at the gym on that particular night answered your questions, but they weren't that friendly or engaging.
Will the newbie to the rock wall thingy go back? Sure! -

Hadn't been in awhile..... this where I first started rock climbing.
It's the same as it was a couple years ago. It's a really nice atmosphere. Idk bout the recycled rubber but it works and smells like it. It does have some good challenges and routes. The height is prob a good two to 3 stories that you can climb upside down at the top.
The employees were helpful.
Great intown location! -

Absolutely loved it! Used to rock climb at a small sports store when I was a teenager, and just recently found out about bouldering. Went for the first time yesterday and signed up for a bouldering membership for only 50bux! Plus, if you pay for the day, and decide you want a membership before you leave, they will count your 10$ day fee towards your membership fee, so you don't pay 60$ for a 50$ membership!
The people were great, and even for a beginner like me there were routes that I could complete and plenty of challenges! I'm hoping this substitutes for working out, since lifting weights are so god awfully boring!
Also, to Thao's note, I'm quite irritable today as well! I'm curious to see if others feel the same way after their first day haha. -
Review from James H.
After running into some old climbing partners on Sunday, we lamented the lack of climbing in our lives. For a brief stretch a few years ago, we'd go twice weekly to Wall Crawler's on Dekalb Ave, and sit around and work on bouldering problems. Fast forward a few years, and we're all out-of-practice (and out-of-shape).
My suggestion that afternoon, then, was for us to go to Atlanta Rocks. I'd returned to AR a few weeks ago after a couple-years' hiatus to find it much the same--a large expansive space of climbing walls with a wide variety of difficulty levels. It's definitely a great place to get an introduction to climbing, and work on the basics.
Experienced gym climbers might be put off by the route-setting, as they create routes by the color of the holds, which in my experience, tends to limit the creativity of the problems (and solutions). They also keep routes up for a very long time (I believe I saw a route still up from 2000 or 2001 when I was last there). When I climbed at other gyms, one of the key driving forces behind getting better at rock climbing was the fear that the problem you were trying to work out for a few visits might suddenly disappear before you could overcome it. I generally don't feel that urgency at AR.
Still, they've added auto-belay devices to the party room (the beginner section), and any chance to get on the walls is a good one.Listed in: Dates, You may rock, but you should…

Way better than Wallcrawlers, which is the only other Atlanta climbing gym I've been to.
Atlanta Rocks has plenty of good top rope routes, plus a long roof area for those of us who can climb horizontally. They've also got a decent bouldering area, as well as some weights and cardio machines.
The employees are pretty nice, but for some reason climbing gym employees everywhere never seem as friendly as they ought to be. -

Great place for rock climbing. It can get a little expensive to rent the gear plus pay the fees ($44 for 2 people) so if you plan to go more than a few times a month it might be good to invest in equipment than have to rent each time. there are beginner walls and advance walls. they also have a stand alone "automatic" rock wall. it's basically like a vertical treadmill.
