The hotel is lovely. I love its architecture.
The Starbucks is what I will avoid. There is a "real" Starbucks facing the MARTA station, near Hyatt Regency. It's MUCH BETTER.
Very nice hotel and friendly staff. We were attending a conference here and cannot speak for the rooms, but the lobby, atrium etc were very pretty!
Location was good too, if you're staying downtown.
I'm attending a conference here, but am glad I am staying elsewhere. This place is getting on my nerves. Hotel design doesn't usually matter that much to me, but this place grates on me. The drive-up entry looks post-apocalyptic- drab, noisy, unappealing. The ballroom has the charm of a warehouse. If you are still impressed with a huge atrium and glass elevators that allow you to fantasize that you have entered the mother ship and are about to vanquish evil with your light-saber, then this will appeal to you. Catering service is ok.
The prices are high and they still nickel-and-dime you. Pay for wi-fi, want to check your email at the business center? Rent a computer. Want to print a boarding pass? Pay for that, as well. I guess that's ok if you're on an expense account. If you're paying the freight, stay at the Hyatt Place nearby. Check out my review and see why.
If you are looking for free wi-fi, step onto the atrium terrace and see what's available.
Was there recently for Dragon*con 2009. I have been staying in this Hotel every year since 2003 and I have to say, unfortunately, this was my worst year. I still give the hotel high marks though.
The experience was not terrible, just frustrating.
I was unable to get the Con Rate this year so my room was full price. This might have left me wanting a "Full price" experience.
First of all, the room seems almost devoid of useful outlets. I was with my girlfriend, and negotiations opened every morning about who would charge their cellphone and when. The lamp by the desk, which normally had a plug on it, this time did not, so I was required to MOVE an entire lamp over there from the end table which DID have a plug so that I could have a plug to plug in my computer. With my Camera battery charger plugged into a second plug, my cell phone charger in a third, and my CPAP machine in a fourth, the room was out of plugs that weren't hidden behind things requiring great contortion.
Secondly, the brightness on the clock SNOOZE button was INCREDIBLY BRIGHT. With the lights off, it was bright enough to keep the room lit.
Finally, the Internet service was the slowest I ever remember it being. I appreciate that there is a CON going on, but this was the first year that I was unable to upload my Convention pictures to any reasonable degree. They took the price of ONE of the days off, but really the whole thing was disappointing. On the good side though, they were very nice to bring me a Diet Coke when the coke machine would not give me my dollar back after all the one dollar selections were sold out (leaving only a 1.50 selection and me with 1 dollar).
I would certainly recommend this hotel, but I hope the service improves from this year.
GET THE PIZZA.
GET THE PIZZA.
GET THE PIZZA.
Their room-service pizza is seriously THE BEST PIZZA I've ever had.
Crazy, right?
They clearly make it fresh. Ingredients are AMAZING. Crust is soft and crunchy. And this wasn't an isolated incident, because we got it twice!
And for around $20, it's a great deal for room-service.
Except for a foreign girl at the front desk (Nadia maybe?) the staff was GREAT. Donny's really cool.
Other than that, one of the craziest indoor views from the glass-elevator.
All surrounding neighborhoods are terrible, so I hope you rent a car or bring cab money. This is "downtown" and apparently "mid-town" is where you want to be.
Unless you're a homeless crackhead. : /
The hotel is gorgeous and very conveniently located. While visiting on vacation nothing we wanted to do was more than a 6 block walk from our hotel. Service was professional. The room was sufficient but a little dated.
The lobby with it's high atrium is just stunning. Taking a ride in one of the glass elevators overlooking the lobby can leave you breathless. We were one of the few who used the hotel for pleasure and even brought our toddler who loved leaning back to look up at the ascending rooms in the hotel atrium. We had good dining experiences at the hotel's restaurant Sear.
A few complaints: Although the bed looked luxurious and comfortable it was actually quite hard. Neither my husband or I got good sleep either night we were there. Our AC unit would rattle occasionally adding to our insomnia. The weekend we visited there was some debate conference with hundreds of high school/college age kids. Beyond midnight we could hear their screams and laughter rising up from below.
They do a really good job with conventions.
the bed was cozy. the staff was extremely nice and helpful. the rooms are another story...
cramped and brown hued, only 1 towel rack and it was in the shower, they stuck an invoice in my room the morning i was leaving,
the teevee was not flatscreen, and it made humming noise. the only newspaper they had was usa today.
it wasn't calm and relaxing. it was like an i'll settle for this ugly place just to crash in."
This is an impressive hotel. Even before you get in, you see large contempo lion statues in front and a tremendous fountain in the drop-off area. The hotel is open in the middle all the way up to the 47th floor. This causes dizziness from either the bottom or the top. Glass elevators take you to your room so you can really get dizzy on the way up.
I enjoyed my stay and thought the rooms had been updated recently. The bed was comfortable - soft matress pad with really great pillows. My room looked different than the one in the photo. I did hear noises coming from the room next to mine that sounded like people remodeling (only during the day), so maybe they are updating it. The walls are VERY thin, though, so when they hit the wall slightly, it moved! I could hear people in the hall with my door closed. Just turn on the fan on the AC and it helps drown out the noise.
Tips: The bar in the Atrium is pretty, but order your beer from the bar next to the restaurant (they have draft and its CHEAPER!). The restaurant is expensive (breakfast = $20), and there's not many (or any) breakfast options downtown, so for a cheap breakfast, buy something from the store in the lobby level. The Starbucks in the lobby made my flavored drinks weak (I ordered two on different days).
Bad bed, no ipod dock, no wireless.old furniture, I did not enjoy this hotel
I was in ATL for business and stayed at this hotel. I think they have the friendliest most helpful staff I've ever seen at a large hotel. Also, my room was immaculate and the bed was really comfy. There's a starbucks in the hotel which is really convenient and the gift shop also has a deli. There's also a gym, pool and several choices for meals all on property.
Its a 10-15 minute walk from both Centennial Park and the Convention Center. During the day I would say its a safe walk, but would suggest a cab in the evenings. There's not a lot of foot traffic in the area once evening hits.
My only complaint about the property is that Pulse Lounge is like this floating bar off of the first floor and its totally open and visible from everywhere in the hotel. My room was on the 4th floor so I could hear the loud music crystal clear. So, either request a room higher up or bring earplugs.
I'm a Conference and Events Coordinator, and I've had three weekend conferences at this location. It's a gorgeous hotel, and I never left the Marriott for a second the entire weekend. Although their restaurants haven't gotten the best ratings on Yelp, I've yet to have a bad experience. I love the smoked salmon appetizer at Sear, but the highlight is definitely their brunch buffet. The $21.50 price is a bit high, especially if you're like me and are satisfied with just one trip to the buffet.
Pulse, a modern, awesome bar on the second floor, gets really popular at night and on the weekends. High Velocity, a sports bar and restaurant, and Sear are the two main restaurants. There's a Starbucks and a small gourmet foods and gift store inside, too. There's also a skybridge that will take you to the Peachtree Center Mall and food court and MARTA station. It's in central downtown and pretty close to all the big sites, but it's not in a location where you'd want to walk around by yourself at night.
The pool is partially covered/indoors, and has a cool layout, but the seating is fairly limited and mostly in the shade. The workout room is very clean and new.
The customer service is excellent, and the staff is extremely polite and helpful. They upgraded me free of charge to the incredible Presidential Suite that is about three time the size of my condo (a pool table, 3 flat screens, 2 bathrooms, and a small library!). The Event Planners have sent me flowers, fruit and cheese plates, and other gifts as a thank you for our decision to choose their hotel as our venue. If you ever have any questions, they reply back to you right away.
I didn't give the Marriott Marquis 5 stars for a few reasons that have to do with running an event there:
-Although everyone I worked with was very helpful and courteous, I didn't feel that they were as on-the-ball or sharp as I would've liked, and I felt the need to double-check everything. At each one of my conferences, the display screens advertising our conference event times and locations throughout the hotel always spelled at least one simple word wrong!
-We were billed for things we didn't order and rooms that we were told would be comped by the hotel in our contract. Although they fixed everything, I really had to go through everything with a fine-toothed comb.
-They had promised me our room block would be set up for our guests within one week of our our signed contract. I called to double-check that it was up, and I was told that it was. Almost one MONTH later, a guest tried to book under our block and was told it wasn't up. I called and was told that due to some unforeseen problems, it still wasn't running!!!!
I really like this hotel. I'd consider it more of a "boutique" Marriott except that it's huge. Unfortunately, I didn't spend too much time here as I was either at a conference or enjoying downtown Atlanta. However, I'd not only return but will also recommend this property to others.
Back to the size. The hotel is massive. 46 floors high I believe. The elevator is a glass cylinder straight out of the Jetsons (NOT for the faint of heart). Beautiful city views from my room. Super comfy bed with awesome pillows (my personal gauge of luxurious slumber).
Proximity to downtown hot spots? Close to everything-- restaurants, nightlife and the MARTA train.
The bathroom could have/should have been larger for a hotel of this caliber but it was only me... and how much space does one really need in the bathroom? But $12.95/day for internet access? Shiza... way to rape and pillage a business traveler's expense account.
Starbuck's on site. Not a puppy love-sized version either... it's full-grown.
Summary: pretty, TALL, convenient location
Stayed here for a conference, so this wasn't the same experience as a random tourist/visitor.
It's trendy, over-priced, and Marriott, so you should expect that. I thought living here was nice, but !#$(^*@#& the elevator waits were RIDICULOUS during rushed times...
I stayed here on business without any real complaints. The facility was nice enough, but nothing special. My only issue was the length of wait for the elevators (which should probably be expected in a hotel this tall).
I will say that the concierge staff was very friendly and helpful. If the review was only based on service I would give them five stars.
This hotel was not up to par for the $500 I paid for the suite. There was something that was misleading about the button on the phone that said "At Your Service." Every time I pressed it, I got the same response: "I do apologize, Ms. SanFrannie, but unfortunately we do not provide ____________." Fill in the blank - in my case it was terry cloth robes, then a mini bar, then laundry service in the middle of the day, then tickets through the concierge for the Annie Leibovitz show at the museum, then the ability to charge my massage to my room to have it all on the single bill. It was like they trained the staff to be particularly obsequious and accommodating but refused to provided them with the tools necessary to make it happen. I have worked in the service industry and if you want to be four star, you have to learn how not to say no.
The decor was tacky, but in a Hotlanta kind of way so it was suiting I suppose. The rooms were exceptionally clean - always a plus in my book. But most of my suite was the living and dining area and the bathroom and bedroom were very cramped. I mean San Francisco, Tokyo, London, Manhattan cramped except that we were in Atlanta - big, sprawling, nothing but space, Atlanta. They should have proportioned it better because I tend to spend most of my time in the bathroom and bedroom anyway when I'm in a hotel. Maybe they get a lot of hotel guests that throw parties or something.
Room service was good. I had several meals in my room while I was there and I was impressed that the food usually showed up in less than 30 minutes as they promised. The food itself was decent, but forgettable as room service food should be. The bar downstairs, "Sails" or something, was terrible. I got a weak pour at $9 a drink and the bartender was, "so sorry but out of limes."
Overall, the hotel was nice, but I just heard too many apologies from the staff. Don't apologize, make it happen! Perhaps my expectations and review would be different had I stayed in a standard room for half the cost. For the price, I prefer the Four Seasons. You don't get the suite, but for what they lack in space, they make up in service.
Oh, and can someone explain a wet bar without a mini-bar?!?!
**This review is for the Guest sized rooms at the Marriott Marquis.**
Look at the website for this for the Marriott Marquis and observe their guest room pictures. Then take a look at the pictures that actual Yelpers from around the country photographed during their stay at the Marriott Marquis. I thought it was fairly obvious that there is a pretty big difference in the quality of the guest room on the website and in person, and the photographs help the argument. The actual quality is no where near what they advertise.
I guess all companies do give their product that fancy makeover though. Especially when they are trying to entice you to purchase something. Like the super tasty looking burger on all of those fast food commercials. You know once you actually go to the fast food joint and look at that burger it never looks nearly as plump, juicy and fresh as it did in the commercial.
Besides the website giving their rooms a little too much credit, the Marriott company did a pretty good job with this Hotel. It is actually probably one of the nicest hotels in the Atlanta area.
I stayed at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis when 311 was in town earlier this year. I hated the fact that I was staying in a hotel that resided in the same city that I lived 5 miles away from, but there was no way that I was going to be able to fit 7 people in my house without being anal the entire night about how they were leaving there damn beer cans everywhere.
The view can be very beautiful through the windows of the Marriott. But that really depends on what part of the city your room is facing. Some of the rooms give you a view of a some dirty back alley in Atlanta that could arguably depress those not accustomed to the city.
Parking was another reason I did not give this place 5 stars. In a nutshell, the parking situation really sucked. You had to either pay some goof-ball attendant 20 bucks to park your car, or park it yourself. If you choose to park the car yourself, like I always do because my mom told me never to let strangers take my car, then you have to navigate your vehicle up this one-way garage and find a parking spot that can sometimes be 10 stories up.
Overall, I liked the place, but since I live in Atlanta I doubt I will ever be staying here again.
This is one of the hotels that has been in Atlanta since I moved here. It is a distinct part of the Atlanta skyline. The enormous Marriot Marquis stands out because the architecture of the building makes it look wider in the middle in such a way that it almost looks "fat."
This was one of my mother's favorite hotels when I was in school. They would come down here to visit and she would always want to stay there because of the awesome views of the Atlanta skyline. I've stayed there a couple times when coordinating events in the city. This is the home to many city conferences and staple events. The Marriot has maintained a superb level of service ever since I've lived here and it will continue to be one of the hotels I recommend to friends and family taking a visit to the big peach.
I routinely come here for Dragon*Con each year, and have several times had a chance to stay in this hotel. There have been some issues with customer service, but usually they seem to be pretty good about resolving them. The biggest problem I have had is that when they have a big convention in the hotel, they tend to have areas heavily congested, especially on the bottom floor and on the escalators opposite the main entrance. It is definitely an experience to go all the way to the top of the hotel and look down at the people so far below.
This is a HUGE hotel with the most interesting atrium I've ever seen. The hotel has all the modern comforts, with well appointed rooms and great views of the city. Service is excellent. When my key card stopped working, I went down to the desk and they sent a staff member to come up with me and show them my ID once we entered (it was in the room). I was pretty impressed, since they could have just let anyone in.
MARTA is very easily accessible through the connecting halls into Peachtree Center, providing a cheap and fast way to the airport.
Nice hotel, freaking huge. Not bad for a Bostonian like myself. The bathrooms could have been a bit bigger, but the facilities worked well. Comfy bed, but something in the bed kept pricking me (I think it was probably stray feathers from their down comforter). I was surprised at how many homeless people hang out around the outside of the hotel. If I ever go back to the dirty dirty, I'll be staying here.
Gorgeous hotel. Un-freakin-believably HUGE. An amazingly large hotel. I got a room around $160 a night, and we got upgraded into a suite. Awesome location, great hotel, parking is a bit strange, but with the restaurants, the starbucks and store, it is a great place.
The Marriott Marquis is located in the heart of downtown Atlanta, with easy access to the MARTA train system (two block walk via the Peachtree Center Mall). The staff is friendly, the rooms are clean and modern, and almost anything you want is easy to find onsite. The interior is just as dramatic as the exterior. (warning: the interior has a 50-story open atrium, so the elevators are not for the faint of heart!) Our room was on the 30th floor, and the views north were spectacular. I stayed here for a convention, and loved the convention space. When not busy sleeping, touring or attending a convention, relax at one of their several on-site restaurants; exercise in their 24/7 gym; or have a swim in their connecting indoor/outdoor pools. I would readily stay here again on my next visit to Atlanta.
The Marquis is definitely one of the better hotel choices in downtown Hotlanta (the Hyatt across the street isn't bad either).
When you first walk in you will be amazed by the massive atrium that takes up the whole inside of the building. And when you ride the glass elevator up to your floor, you'll feel like you are on the set of the Matrix rather than heading to your hotel room.
There are all the usual amenities that one needs: exercise room (it has a decent view), valet parking (no self park), and a great coffee shop in the lobby for the early morning joe. I also like the orange and lemon flavored water in the lobby.
The location is extremely central, with a decent selection of restaurants within walking distance. You can easily include CNN Center, the Georgia dome, Olympic Park, and Georgia Tech in your jogging route. And there is easy access to I-85.
The hotel is undergoing renovations at the moment, so call ahead to check what is open or closed.
I was going to give this hotel 4 stars. The room size, location and various hotel amenities would've made for a solid 4-star hotel. However, one phrase, uttered by someone in a suit (instead of a bellman uniform), pushes them up to a 5-star level: "excuse me ma'am, can I carry that for you?"
My first impression of the Marriott Marquis was that it was some 70s throwback, complete with shag rugs and awful avocado color schemes but the decor is a hip mix of feng-shui and 70s cool that was perfect. And after my horrible experience with Marriott in Fort Lauderdale, I considered myself a confirmed Hilton guest. But the Marriott Marquis made me a believer again -- and I am not referring to the Book of Mormon in the nightstand. I had to wait way too long to check-in, as there was confusion with all the flight crews coming and going, but my friend stayed busy chatting up a BA crew so all was well. The desk clerk was apologetic and the ride on the glass elevator made me quickly forget the initial hassle. The room was very clean, understated and nicely decorated, with an awesome view of Atlanta. Yes the bathroom was relatively small, but I don't really judge a stay by the size of the bathroom. The Starbuck's downstairs came in handy after a late night experiencing "Hotlanta" (another 70's throwback I guess) and Brenda the concierge deserves a raise! She never hesitated to make great suggestions for places to eat and helped with directions. She definitely made our stay even more memorable. And no, I don't really think that the sculpture out front is an alien space ship....
The architecture of the building is inspiring. The soaring atrium is very impressive. Unfortunately, the room dcor was not much better than a Holiday Inn. The staff was mixed, some pretty good and some pretty clueless. Overall the restaurants and bars were pretty standard for this type of hotel, meaning acceptable but overpriced food. Beware that as of May '07, the hotel was undergoing substantial renovation involving cutting through solid concrete. The sound carried all the way to the top of the atrium, went from morning until evening, and was absolutely deafening.
