Athos is a really wonderful restaurant. The food is absolutely amazing! The pork souvlaki was by far the best pork I've ever had in my life and the Greek potatoes are worth their weight in gold. The service was also fantastic and the live music they have on Friday nights is great and makes the place so warm and inviting. I highly suggest Athos for everything from a romantic dinner for two to a large group of friends. You really can't go wrong here!

Every dish we had was mediocre to bad. Because of the multiple Yelp recommendations, we had the Octapothi Scharas, which tasted charred and not in a good way. The Athos salad and traditional Greek salads were a small step up from diner level: simply chopped and tossed vegetables, just so so. The waiter's recommendations were the whole branzino and the saganaki. The branzino was supposed to be filleted and deboned; it was in fact full of small bones. The saganaki was simple, not bad. The moussaka was bland and uninteresting. The turkish coffee was bad, a bit acidic and weak. The baklava was the only thing I actually liked, and that is a tough dish to screw up.
The kitchen in no way lives up to the white tablecloth environment and the menu prices. For Albany it is expensive. It felt like food from 30 or 40 years ago.
It was a family dinner and my mom chose the place because she had enjoyed it on a previous visit. And she liked it this time, too. So I guess they have their clientele, people with bad taste in food, and they will go along serving bad food to undiscriminating patrons. I knew I'd never be back. When in Albany I have had better luck with Creo and 677 Prime. I can't understand Athos's high Yelp rating. I gave two stars instead of one because they seemed to at least be trying, and there were a couple of dishes I didn't hate.
The service was annoying with a pointless lecture on Greek history from the host who seated us then unctuous small talk and niceties from our waiter. Meanwhile it took far too long for the initial drink order to arrive on a dead night and when we wanted attention there was often no one in sight. There was a food runner but no busboys. They took off the charge for a couple of beverages because we had these discount promotions from my mom's prior visit, even though we didn't order the house wines that the discounts applied to, so that was a plus. -

I have dined here twice after my first review and I have to say, as you can see by the drop in rating, things have gone from very good to meh. Went recently for a fundraiser dinner/birthday célèbre and while the service, as always, was very good the food has slowly become blasé. I had the fish plaki. This was the saltiest food I have ever received anywhere. It literally was painful to eat. Thankfully I had ingested enough water to offset this during the 45 minute wait between salad and entree courses. The server was nice enough to replace my meal with another but I had to eat quickly because everyone was done with their meal by the time I received my replacement. Also: When they say "lemon potatoes" they mean one small piece of a potato flavored with lemon. I am talking 1 wee piece of potato. Veg is steamed broccoli w/ a bit of carrot (bland). Rice pilaf is nothing to write home about. I would suggest you go find a good Greek diner and save yourself $40.

We started off the evening with saganaki = fire + cheese, perfect combination. Nicely done flame, without the concern that you might burn your hair if you are sitting too closely.
For the entire meal the amount of food was not too much and not too little. Just right, so that you don't have that uncomfortable stuffed feeling. I had the Mediterranean lamb, which was very nicely prepared without any overwhelming seasonings.
The waitress was incredible. Good sense of humor and a passion about good food that rivals my own.
Overall this place is perfect for a date, or a get together with friends. Very relaxed atmosphere, but at the same time very nice. As you walk in, there are windows in the floor where you can peek into the wine cellar, which is interesting, if a little gimmicky.
Finally, this place takes child friendly to a new level. The women's bathroom actually has some complimentary diapers in case the little one has an unexpected accident. -

"Athos, the Greek"

As we walked into Athos, a Greek restaurant in Albany/Guilderland, we were pleased to discover that we had just walked over an authentic wine cellar. We knew this because under our feet was a glass platform where we gazed down to see the enormous collection. This was a good sign that we were in for a fantastic meal.
It doesn't happen often that a first visit to a restaurant will warrant a 5 star review.
But gosh darn it, Athos deserves it.
As we sat down, we were greeted with fresh warm pita bread and roasted red pepper and olive oil spread. Yum.
We started off with a glass of a Greek white wine (similar to a Chardonnay) and a Greek red (similar to a Pinot Noir).
The appetizer list was intimidating to say the least. It was divided into cold and hot appetizers (Mezethes). Traditional Greek spreads, big Greek salads loaded with Feta and olives, as well as Grilled Octopus simmered in olive oil over a bed of arugula, Spanakopita, and Dolmathes among other Greek specialties. The appetizers themselves could be enlarged to be included as entrees.
Seeing as we already had tons of pita, we opted for the spread - Pikilia - choosing 3 of them: Tzatziki (Greek yogurt), Melitsanosalata (smoked eggplant), and Taramosalata (A caviar mousse).
The tzatziki was infused with lots of dill and lots of garlic- so obviously it was delicious. The caviar mouse was rich and creamy with a refined fish flavor that was not overpowering. The eggplant was also tasty but was our least favorite as it was a little too salty. We devoured all the spread, and the attentive wait staff kept bringing out more pita bread and red pepper dip.
For the entrees, the menu was divided into "Tu Classica" and "Apo Ti Schara" - From the Grill. My wife ordered off the Classica, choosing the Lamb Kleftiko. This is slow cooked hunks of lamb, artichoke hearts, onions, asparagus tips, feta and lemon, steamed and wrapped in parchment paper.
I was more intrigued by the Grill options. I had heard that Athos has fresh fish brought up each week from New York City, so I was excited to see what kind of fish they had. The fish would be grilled to order and served whole with sides of rice pilaf, lemon potatoes, onions and red peppers (called Tis Imeras). Thus I inquired. Our waitress kindly obliged and brought over a plate of three fresh whole fish: a long Mediterranean fish (I forgot the name but it was on the expensive side), an Atlantic Dorado, and a cheaper Flounder that the chef said is better fried.
I went with the Atlantic Dorado which the waitress described as mild and meaty. We both had chosen wisely.
The Lamb Kleftiko, which was served like a home style stew, was so tender she could pull it a part with her butter knife. It was flavored perfectly, and she sopped up the remaining sauce with pita. I was fortunate to try a few bites (lamb is perhaps my favorite meat) and it was cooked perfectly, with tons of flavor. I was almost upset i didn't order a lamb dish until I tried my fish.
The fish was served whole as said. One of the line cooks from the back came out to fillet the fish in front of us, cutting of the head, and deboning it with great care and attention.
The fillet was laid out in 4 large strips and he drizzled a very citrusy lemon oil over the meat. Fresh, light and flakey, I devoured it all.
Unfortunately we ate too fast and thus were not hungry anymore for dessert.
Big mistake as I could really go for a Baklava Sundae or Baklava Cheesecake (yeah you read that correctly) right about now. -

Wow. I might not have considered Athos if I hadn't seen Jae L's review. I was really impressed by what I ate. If I lived close by, I'd be a regular.
I visited on a Tuesday night--it's hard to imagine why Athos isn't packed. As it was, I had a lot of attention from my waiter. He was enthusiastic about many of the dishes on the menu and, truth to tell, I wish there were about 10 people with me because I wanted to try everything. I settled for a number of appetizers--to which he remarked, "That's what we do in Greece--order a lot of appetizers and everybody shares." I didn't have anybody to share with, but I enjoyed what I ate.
The octopus was excellent: very well charred, drizzled with EVOO and lemon juice, served on a bed of arugula. Octopus can often be tough. Not at Athos: theirs was very tender. I'm not embarrassed to say that I scarfed it up, ate the arugula, and wiped the plate with Athos's excellent pita bread.
Next, the Seftalia, which is ground pork mixed with onion, parsley, and seasonings, wrapped in bacon, and grilled. Again, perfectly charred and perfectly cooked, still slightly rare in the middle, well-seasoned. I could eat Seftalia for dinner twice a week and look forward to my next bite.
I also ordered horta, which in Greece is typically made from wild greens. My waiter told me that the horta at Athos was made from wild greens, but what I was served appeared to me to be mostly kale. Still, it was tender and tasty and it did appear that there were wild greens mixed in.
My final taste was gigante beans, stewed in a light tomato sauce with onion, carrots, and celery. Again, the beans were perfectly cooked, tender, and tasty. I enjoyed them, though they had the least character of the dishes I tried.
I drank two different wines: a white and a light red described as a Greek pinot noir.
So Athos? If I lived close by, I'd be there a couple nights a week. Wonderful food: from now on, my go-to restaurant in the Albany area. -

It was so good, we ate the garnish.
Two of the best meals I have had in the past year have been -- I kid you not -- in Albany. Which is kind of weird -- and not just because Albany is not the first place you think of when you hear the words "fine dining" -- but because we rarely come to Albany. We only stop by to eat on our way from Vermont to places west, like Syracuse or Geneva, NY. It's all thanks to Yelp, really.
So the first excellent meal was at Provence -- a lovely French restaurant, which I have reviewed elsewhere. But our meal at Athos was just as good -- and cheaper -- and the service was outstanding. The staff was friendly and personal, our waitress (Heather!) well-informed and diligent, and the service was quick as can be. The place was empty when we got their at 6:23 and suddenly packed by 6:32, but the service never suffered or seemed bogged down.
I am going to be honest with you: we never got past the appetizer menu. We couldn't decide on which ones to order, so we ordered 4 of them in lieu of main dishes.
I believe your meal comes with pita wedges (warm and house-made) and a nice red-pepper dip. But you should totally splurge on the option to order 3 of several dips ("pikilia") for about 10$. I loved the yellow pea dip, which had an unexpected but pleasant hint of the sea (anchovies, maybe?) with just the right amount of lemon. But it paled in comparison to the garlic-potato-almond dip, which had an amazingly light texture but deep taste...and just the right amount of lemon. But neither could really compete with the smoked eggplant dip, which I am craving so much right now that I am near tears...complex, smokey, garlicky, and, of course, with just the right amount of lemon.
We also ordered the spanakopita ($7), which was one of the nicest I've ever had, though I could have done with a bit more filling. It's all about the spinach, but lots of folks forget that. Not at Athos! The spinach shines through, nicely complimented (but not overwhelmed) by the other flavors of feta, leeks, and a hint of dill. The pastry was nice and flaky with just the right crunch.
The calamari ($8) was pretty good (I still measure every calamari dish against the York Harbor Inn, and alas, they all fall short...) -- tender meat, lightly breaded, pan fried, and not at all greasy. But what really made the dish was the amazing "spiced tomato sauce," which seems like an understatement. It had a rich complexity I could not put my finger on. There was a hint of some after-taste in the back of my mouth that reminded me of a high-quality honey. I even sent a staff member to ask the cooks, but they said no honey was used. Whatever. It was delicious.
Even though it is just a side dish, I highly recommend the simple but satisfying steamed seasonal greens for $5. Lovely! We ordered this instead of the salad, and we got a heaping plate of nutricious yet delicious greens -- kale? spinach? who knows? who cares? I felt healthier for it.
Finally, we ordered the marinated quail ($12), which was excellent, but nevertheless the least favorite of our appetizers. The menu says it is char grilled, but it was so crispy and moist my husband was swearing it was deep-fried! The meat was flavorful and not even the tiniest bit overcooked. The lemon-herb sauce on the underlying arugula was the perfect foil for each crispy bite of that tiny bird.
Sadly, we found the baklava very disappointing -- the pastry was mushy and stale, the filling heavy and overwhelming. Which made us sad, since it was actually the main reason we choose Athos. But right around then, Chris -- who was playing host but I suspect may be more than that -- came around and asked us how our meal was. So we told him about the source of our grief, and he immediately offered to take it off the bill or replace it with a different desert. He recommended the baklava cheesecake, and it was very good. Not the best cheesecake-of-my-dreams cheesecake, but very good.
Four apps, a side of greens, a desert, a beer, and a coffee...we were stuffed, and all for 71$ (Note, most main dishes range from 18-24$ with a few dishes for 28-32$.)
A final comment to those concerned about the dress code. Yes, most people were dressed nicely -- men in button downs and women in nice pants and blouses. But a few were dressed for an outing to Walmart, or, like us, for a long road trip -- and the staff was wonderful to us all. The ambience definitely suggests it is a place for a special occasion, but don't be intimidated. It is also a great road-side stop for your long-distance travels.
We are definitely coming back the next time we have to drive to upstate New York.

This place really is all that and a bag of chips. We could not find one thing wrong with the place! Great service, great wine list, wonderful food, good atmosphere.
Our waitress was a pleasure and not overbearing. The pita and red pepper dipping sauce was delicious. I would love to get a tub of this stuff to take home as a snack.
I could wax poetic about the quality of the food, but I think any of the 5 star ratings below sum it up perfectly. We had the spanakopita, moussaka,
rabbit stephatho, and baklava cheese cake. My fiance could not stop talking about how wonderful the sauce was on the rabbit, and he can be picky. I was in heaven with my moussaka. Everything was wonderful from start to finish.
We'll DEFINITELY be back again. -

This was my first time eating Greek food, and I was pleasantly surprised. A co-worker and I drove over to the mall to look for something to eat, found the Athos on Yelp, and decided to give it a try. Before you come out to the restaurant be sure to dress up a bit. I was wearing a t-shirt and shorts and felt way underdressed. I don't think the person who sat us thought much of us since he sat us in the very back of the restaurant. =/
Anyway, we had the Spanakopita as an appetizer. It was very surprising. I don't particularly like spinach or leeks, but it was tasty! I ordered the KaKavia for my entree. It was delicious! The fish, shrimp, and scallops were fresh, and the broth was amazing.
The restaurant itself is pretty cool. It has a very homey feel to it. When you walk in, you feel like you're walking into someone's house. The glass panel on the floor allows you to view the wine cellar in the basement too (which was nice touch).
After eating at so many less-than stellar places in Albany, it was nice to find Athos. If you ever come to Albany and want to get away from the restaurants near the projects, check out Athos. -

Went back - less happy with the meal - but sorry we did not have the Early Bird special. What a deal! Good choices of appetizer, entree, dessert for $18 something.
Service is great and when we complained about a dish being too salty they removed it from the bill, and the maitre de was extremely apologetic and nice. That is the way to handle it, and that is why we will go back. We heard accolades from fellow diners around us.

My parents had already been here quite a few times and I still hadn't gotten to try it. (Which is outrageous because we LOVE going out for Greek food). So finally over the holidays, we decided to go and check it out.
First, when you walk in, part of the floor by the hostess stand is see through! So you can look into the wine cellar. Which is definitely cool tho I am slightly afraid of heights and hate looking down like that.
I enjoyed my meal tho (and finished more of it than I'd care to admit) which was an appetizer of octopus for the table, Macedonian lamb with lemon potatoes, baklava cheesecake for dessert and a frappe. I don't normally order lamb for myself but this was tender and juicy and complimented by the lemon potatoes.
Baklava is just as tasty and filling as it sounds and definitely worth a try. They even put the name of the restaurant in cinnamon on the top!
I'll definitely make my parents go back here when I visit again. -

Insultingly bad cuisine at insultingly high prices.
Pros:
* If you judge a restaurant by it's table cloth and mood lighting, you might like this place.
Cons:
* Absolutely an insult to Greek cuisine. Nothing Greek here but the name.
* Absolutely an insult to any cuisine. Of the 6 dishes ordered, the range was from blah to bad.
* Here was our menu:
* $60 = Special appetizer sampler dish - A single plate of burned and fried bits of seafood. (yes, sixty bucks!)
* $24 = Rabbit - something bony marinated with fajita seasoning and then covered with a red sauce.
* $35 = Lamb - two dinky bones with a chunk of lamb on each, passable but not worth half the money.
* $25 = Seafood pasta - chopped up bits of sea creatures, overcooked and thrown into a bland sauce over equally bland pasta.
* $25 = Lamb with orzo - chewy lamb bits hidden amongst other squishy bits, none of which were palatable enough to finish.
* $18 = Pastichio - a burned layer of macaroni with a slab of flavorless cheese on top.
Bottom line: If you truly love food, Greek or not; you will truly hate this place. Even if the meal were half it's price, the food is simply not good enough to warrant being housed or consumed. You deserve better; go somewhere else. If you are stuck there now, yelping because you can't figure out anything good to order; just leave... seriously, you will regret not doing it sooner... you are at this moment being robbed. -

Great food, outstanding service. Loved the grilled fish and the app sampler platter. Excellent martinis. The bartender was amazing - she handled all the drink orders for the dining room, Taverna, and those seated at the bar quickly, efficiently, and really knows her craft. Will definitely return soon, it's our new favorite restaurant.

I will be perfectly honest that I have not been here for a meal. I did, however, get an unreal craving for Baklava one evening, and that brought me to the front door of Athos.
Their Baklava is TDF (To.Die.For) - homemade by the owner; it's krispy, sweet, and dripping with honey.
I will follow up this with a complete review when I venture there for a full meal! -

I'm officially giving Athos a 3.5
The food here is really good, I had the rabbit stew and the red wine sauce was delicious, the rabbit was tender, and the tomatoes and onions were slow cooked to perfection. However, the dish was lacking in color, the rice and vegetables that came with it would have helped the plating but they were put on a small side dish. This was a little awkward to eat from and robbed the dish of some eye popping color contrasts.
The flavors overall were delicious. The Macedonian Lamb was delicious, cooked to medium rare and the lushness was nicely complimented by the lemon potatoes. The seafood youvesti was very nice, the fish was a little over cooked, but very tasty. This dish really would have benefited from some fresh garnish, say, fresh parsley, instead of dried. However the food overall was very good.
This restaurant loses points on the small things. I think the plates could have had more color, and the sides should not have been awkward to eat. Also, the service wasn't awful, but nothing great, which considering the prices, is disappointing. That said, the food is great, especially the ever present pita and red pepper dip. -

I went the other night in a group of four and was very happy with our meal. They have a prix fix menu most nights - three courses for around $22. I have looked for a vegetarian moussaka for years - finally found it - and it was worth the wait. Perfectly cooked slices of eggplant and tomato, paper thin slices of potato all topped with an amazing bechamel sauce. Outstanding. The warm pita and red pepper dip they put on the table in the beginning is awesome as well. Service is friendly and helpful, prices reasonable.

I hate to say this, but the fact that this place has a good rating makes me want to move out of Albany. This place is NOT GREEK. They are clean, nice, beautifully decorated. But the food is terrible for its price. We spent an overage of $45 each person feeling still kind of hungry after the meal. I had the rabbit for my entree, and it was ok, definitely not worth $25. Our entire bill for 5 people was around $230, OMG!!

Good food. A little over-priced. Slightly slow, but polite service. Bar seating was more elegant than dining room, which had a cheap ethnic feel. Beer selection fantastic. Fresh fish of the day a great touch, especially since there was a choice of two. If they just improve the setup of the dining room and have faster service and try a little harder on the presentations to be more consistent, this could be a four star review. BTW, the lemon potatos were great, as were the fried dough balls. This place is definitely worth checking out, and ill probably go again just for the fish, chatham beer and dough balls. I look forward to seeing if this place improves over the next couple years because there is definitely a potential for something really good, because the nuts and bolts are all there. There us just some assembly still required. Check out Athos sometime.

I had a really great dining experience at Athos. My friend and I sat in a booth in the bar area which was roomy and cozy. We both started with a glass of one of their greek reds which was very nice. They brought out a basket of toasted pita bread and a yummy red pepper dip. To save room for dessert we skipped appetizers and went straight to entrees. We decided to share one of their whole grilled fresh fish and a clay pot of lamb and orzo pasta. The fish was light and flaky and the lamb was tender. For dessert we had baklava and loukoumathes - fried dough with honey. Both were delicious. Most importantly, the service was incredible. I look forward to going back.

This place just opened, and I was one of its first customers. I thought the food was great! I'm a vegetarian and not Greek though, so I can't really tell you what the names were or what the fish and meat dishes were like, except that everyone I ate with enjoyed their food. I was very impressed that there's a lot of vegetarian dishes and that I left satisfied -- which isn't easy to find when I visit Albany. Everything was flavorful, unusual, and tasty. And I can't remember the name of a single darned dish! (It's all Greek to me.)
The restaurant itself is really well-done. The dining room was beautiful and big, and fun. There was a big bar area that looked like it would be a cool place to hang out, but we were there to eat. It's got plenty of parking and it's near the Cross Gates mall. Overall, a big score! I've got a new place to eat when I visit Albany! -

We stopped in here for dinner with relatives before returning to Manhattan last evening. Although we arrived at the opening, we were greeted warmly and led to our table. The see-through floor which displays the wine cellar is a nice touch. The very charming waitress informed us of the specials and suggested a delightful Greek wine to accompany our meals. The salads are to share, which is also a nice touch. We ordered two for the five of us, which was just right (my favorite was the Athos salad). Everyone was happy with his or her her choice of entree. We literally had no room for dessert, but the Greek coffee was delicious. And when we mentioned returning to Manhattan, the waitress informed us that the owner also owns Ithaka on 86th St. in Manhattan! Although it's not far from where we live, we hadn't tried it . Now we will! I see that the menus are nearly identical.

I finally got around to checking this place out recently with some friends. The entire experience, from start to finish was superb. Service was great, the food was delicious and the ambiance is comfortable. I am a vegetarian and was quite pleased with the vegetarian entree available. It's a sampling of about 5 or 6 of the different vegetarian offerings - some of the stuffed eggplant, some spanakopita, vegetables, these delicious huge white beans. An awesome way to taste a whole bunch of different things. We sat in the dining room, but the bar area also looked very nice and inviting. We'll certainly be returning for some more delicious food and to try out a few of the selections from their lengthy wine list.

We were here for a baptism celebration and could not have been more happy with the food and the hospitality. We tried the roast lamb which was delicious. We also tried the vegetarian moussaka and pasta. You truly do not miss the meat in those dishes at all. Try the restaurant in NYC, also owned by the same family: Ithaka in the upper east side. Delish!

I had my birthday dinner here with a party of 6 others. Even when we arrived half an hour before our reservation we found that they had already set up a table for us in their beautiful dining room. Excellent. The staff was friendly taking our coats and showing us to our table and then directing our other guests to us. I was really impressed with their Greek salad, their spanakopita and their saganaki. The saganaki was sooo good. We also really enjoyed the loukoumades (fried dough balls in honey). Delish! Both of the wines we enjoyed were excellent. My only complaints were that my mousakka, which I ordered for my entree, was a bit cold and that the server took a really long time before coming over to take our order even though it was not especially busy the evening we were there. I will definitely be coming back, however. It is hard to find good Greek food in the Northeast and this place definitely fits the bill.

we hadn't planned on going to this place tonight but had heard good things. We sure are glad we decided to go. The service was very good and the live Greek music was a nice touch. The food was exceptional. The calamari was very fresh. Some of the best I have ever had. We had some other appetizers that I can't pronounce and they were all very tasty. For the entrees we had the veal chop, the fish platter, some squid stuffed with crabmeat, and the lamb souvlaki. We passed the entrees around and we all agreed that this was some of the best Greek food we had ever had. We topped it off with some baklava and a couple other desserts. The baklava was very good! I recommend saving some room for it. If you are in the mood for Greek cuisine and a good time, I highly recommend this place. You will not be disappointed!

I love this place. A welcome addition to Albany, which has a dearth of quality restaurants. Service, food and ambiance all get high marks. We received individual attention from the Maitre de which was nice but not intrusive. I'm looking forward to returning and am glad to see that the reviews continue to be generally positive.
