Review from George D.
Mountain View, CA
My grandfather is now staying at this facility and I must say that it is a great place compared to any other facility I have seen. I actually read over some of the bad reviews on this website and I find it funny, knowing the administrator on a personal level, all three of the bad reviews on this page are from people who were trying to push their limits, and get the place closed down. They are just posting on Yelp because they couldn't get what they wanted on a legal level. Anyone who thinks that the administrator will risk getting his business shut down just to help these people's selfishness needs to get a real education. No one will go against the law in order to help people like you, and you three are so angry that you had to come on Yelp and lie about everything in order to make yourselves feel better. Well I hope you had a great time writing fake/bad reviews about the facility and maybe you three should grow up a little bit and use your head.
Come and check out the place for yourselves and don't trust anything that these 1 star giver's have to say, they were just angry that the administrator wouldn't break the law for them and keep their elderly ones at the facility when it was obvious that there was no other option. You can completely tell by reading Loni R. and Linda W.'s ratings that what they have to say is unreliable because it is completely bias based on their selfish needs. For example, I remember talking to the administrator about Loni's case and found out that she was trying to force her mother to stay there when her mother didn't want to stay there. The administrator couldn't keep the elderly woman there against her will, and Loni got angry and posted this two page long description. Grow a brain, please. -

My grandmother lives in Menlo Park , she was at this facility for a short term stay for rehabilitation, even though the building is not as nice as most in Menlo Park area the service was overall good and my grandmother was pleased with the results. And I was very comfortable leaving her there by seeing the care they have been providing for my grandmother.

My Grandfather was at this facility for rehabilitation after a broken hip, he stayed there for about two and one-half months. The nursing staff was excellent, rehab team was great, the food was o.k., but it's not a restaurant. All of my questions were answered immediately, and, the overall quality of service was very high. Due to their efforts, my Grandfather made a strong recovery and is now doing well. I was shocked to read the other reviews that were so negative. I would highly recommend this facility, thus the 4 star rating I have given. The only thing that I did not like is that the building is very old, however the inside is very clean, no odors or unpleasantness at all. The staff were very friendly and eager to help.

My grandmother was in this place for therapy after sustaining a broken leg and arm after being involved in a motor vehicle accident , i was amazed how quick the therapists got her back in shape and my grandmother was able to watch tv, have all day activities such as bingo that she really loves, nurses were nice, it can be a bit noisy at times, but besides that it was a great experience for her and our family. I'm glad that i was recommended that place. They are a four star facility and i really think they deserve five!

My grandmother moved from a Burlingame home to this one after Mills was rebuilt. This place is incredible... it is *massive* old hospital that you can barely see from the street. It looks like a nice building inside a forest (sort of).
But it is a large, 3 floor, multi winged skilled "Nursing and Rehabiltation Center". Some call it an old folks home, some feel uncomfortable in them, some are deeply challenged by the concept of mortality and life.
The staff is great. The lady at the main desk is happy, helpful, patient, friendly... more patient. All the things you need. The staff is engaged, aware, and involved. I haven't seen anyone be derisive or short with even the most difficult, wayward of tenants? clients? older folks?
It has a great main room for dinner, and activities. You see people out and about in the halls, which is incredible and a good sign: it means the staff engages the people and gets them out exercising and doing things. It keeps them firm mind and body.
My grandmother has her little place with all the things that can keep her busy. I won't go on.... I just want this stuff to be informative, and useful. Frankly that is what yelp was supposed to be. Reading some of these reviews on this site, I dunno.
But when you start talking about retirement homes and the like, this is such a difficult, lonely, dark place to deal with alone. I hope to help you feel at ease, and find a safe place you can feel comfortable with. These people are good and do a great job. -

The staff is responsive and friendly. The reception desk is welcoming. The place is clean and kept up. However the administration is dishonest. The doctor approved my mothers discharge but the paperwork was never completed. When we went to pick up the perscriptions, they refused to give them to us because she was "released against doctor's orders"--their paperwork error. They were angry and uncooperative. I believe they wanted to keep her there as long as possible to have a maximum billing.
Now we are scrambling to recreate the perscriptions. Unfortunately, they left me with a feeling that they are vendictive. -

Don't let the name "Atherton" fool you - while Atherton, CA may be one of the more classy, affluent areas in the State of California, Atherton Healthcare is most certainly an unsightly blight on an otherwise beautiful community.
Prior to seeking a new residence for my bright and mobile, 90 year old mother (who suffers from congestive heart failure and slight dementia), a friend stated, "I wouldn't put a dog in there!" I wish I would have heeded that observation and not pursued them for accommodations for my mother - but being under the gun financially and needing to find a facility quickly (specifically, one that would interface with Medi-Cal and one which would be in a close proximity to myself, with a pending move to the area happening in a few months), Atherton Healthcare seemed a good fit.
Once the paperwork had been completed and an approval given, I stopped by to see the facility. Not impressive (run down/smelly), I attempted to keep an open mind and meet the staff. I finally met Marina (whom I had spoken to frequently on the phone) and she was nice enough, though distant with a weak, unimpressive handshake - but the problems did not start until I physically brought my mom to the facility.
Without a tour, without any cordial pleasantries toward my mother or any type of real 'greet' or welcome from anyone, my mother was quickly slapped with an unremovable I.D. bracelet by the person who manned the front desk (hard to call it a reception desk - it was a disaster, piles of paper, unkempt and in visual disrepair). We were then hustled upstairs to where she would be living going forward (I had requested to see the room PRIOR to her moving in, but was denied - and told that all of that could be handled on move-in day).
My mother, brother and myself were brought to a drab and dreary room at the end of a hallway on the second floor, where a woman lay (apparently near death - all but skin and bones, labored breathing). The room (and the second floor) looked more like a concentration camp than a facility that should care about its residents. Clearly, seniors are viewed as disposable in this environment, and not even worthy of a picture on the wall. The bathroom in the room had a barely functioning fluorescent light over the sink and little room to even maneuver a walker. My mother's bed was to be the one nearest the window - the furniture in horrid condition as if acquired from a yard sale 20 years ago. The window was open and directly beneath it was the employee smoking area, with un-breathable amounts of cigarette smoke filing the room.
Obviously my mother was greatly upset by this environment - and in my mind, I was hoping (given financial conditions) that this could just be a temporary stay until I could find a more suitable (i.e., HUMANE, SAFE AND DIGNIFIED) facility. She was slightly agitated and verbally refusing to stay, but the staff, including the administrator, did NOTHING to help me calm her fears or even make her feel welcome... they would not speak to her through the device she uses to help her hear - would not even utter a kind word to her...... and told me that my mother was 'my problem' and that I would need to stay there with her 24/7 if I wanted her to stay at 'their facility.'
I am normally a calm and rational person, but being angered and disgusted beyond belief with the inappropriate, cold, callous and unfeeling attitude of the women running this facility, their indifference to my mother's fears... and their arrogance to tell me as they stood with their arms crossed in defiance that they had held this bed for three weeks for my mother and how "I" had inconvenienced "them," I immediately tore up their admission papers, tossed them in the air and told them what they could do with their bed, their room AND their facility (it had NEVER been stated to me that a bed was being held - I was told there was a wait list and that there were no beds available when I first contacted them - which is why I jumped quickly when I was told a bed was available.
I will not be so quick to jump again. Our seniors deserve to be loved and cared for in safe and nurturing environments - this hell hole is not one of them. I will also be sending this review to the California State Agency which monitors, reviews and licenses these facilities. I strongly recommend that Atherton Healthcare have its licensed revoked.Comment from Marina S. of Atherton Healthcare 2/17/2011

What a horrible, old, smelly and dirty place. A friend of mine was unfortunately recently admitted. The beds, bed covers, chairs, etc in the rooms are old, old, old and grimy and unfriendly looking. Bare walls, no warmth about the rooms at all. No telephones in the rooms. When we called for assistance we waited 30 minutes before going down to the "nursing station" to get assistance; When you press the buzzer for help it seems just a light comes up outside the door and if noone sees it, you wait and wait. My friend cannot get out of bed. I needed to use the restroom myself downstairs in the reception area when I arrived, you have to get the key from the receptionist, but the bathroom was dirty and the water tank continually running. My friend needs 24-hour care at the moment, needs assistance with bathroom, eating and drinking, but there is very little assistance. The staff for the most part seem to be "foreign speaking." I am sure some are caring but the communication level seems limited; the admitting nurse was cold; if she had read my friend's file she would have seen how limited my friend was in movement, etc. instead of repeating questions to her and then shouting them at her and getting frustrated because my friend was unable to answer or help in movement. My friend's doctor has given specific instructions, but these were not being adhered to. The whole facility also is "dark and cold" - there should be light and some stimulation around. There are elderly patients sitting in wheelchairs outside the elevator doors by the nursing stations, just waiting for someone to give them a smile and pass the time of day. It breaks my heart to see my friend's end of life come to this awful facility. There were staff outside smoking when we arrived too, which really surprised me since they are by the building and the smoke drifts upwards. Perhaps if the whole building was brightened up with fresh paint, the furniture in the rooms replaced, the bedding and covers, etc. perhaps it would help some in making the whole place more friendlier, but as it stands, in my humble opinion it is horrible. I know there are very few choices here in the Bay Area and some think we should be happy this place exists, but! Another thing, the parking is terrible too, very limited and difficult to come by and they boast about being among the pines, but the view from the bedrooms is of car parks and buildings. If you can find an alternative, do..

This place was the worst experience thank god my grandfather was only there one night and taken back to the hospital. Having to see my Grandfather go through a tough three week in and out of ICU to have to be taken to this place that is run down and smelly really old furniture and small rooms for two people. He arrived there and left alone with no water and nurse didn't even know that he had been in that room for more than four hours the gal that helped him go to the restroom did not inform others there was a patient there and didn't offer to bring him water. when we arrived there to visit the vibe of the people was really bad they were rude not friendly these people shouldn't work there if they can't treat human being as they should be treated. My pet dog is treated better than the seniors that are brought to this facility so in shorts words I would never even put my pet in the care of these people. If we had not gone to visit him as a family they would of never known he was there or even had been feed. My mother went to front desk to ask if he could be taken to a private room since doctor had requested they simply said no there is no rooms and we wont have any rooms available. Than dinner game they tried to feed him with out checking his blood sugar we as a family had to tell them to check his sugar before feeding him and they did and it was low luckily they new not to give him insulin. Than they came in asking if they can do TB test and he had a marking on his hand that they had done it well we told him well if he got it you guys should know why give it to him again if he got it they didn't answer and just poked him without finding out if it had been done already. Next morning he called home to ask for his walker cause they wouldn't give him one. So as we were getting ready to see him he called again saying he couldn't breath and he page the nurse and they wouldn't come good thing we left his cell phone with him because the room he was in didn't even have a phone. My mother got on the cell phone to call the facility and she told them he called and had difficulty breathing and pain in his chest they put her on hold. I called his cell phone he answered and said that they told him there was no oxygen but minutes later they came in with one after being more than ten minutes that they had called. When she was heading out the nurse called and said it was just an anxiety attack and nurse said you should come calm him down my mom responded am coming to make sure he is fine regardless because of the experience we had the night before. When she got there she notice it wasn't an anxiety attack but it was due to his heart condition he was having arrhythmia they had to wait thirty minutes till an ambulance came with oxygen only they had to wait another thirty minutes for them to get the fire department and an ambulance that could care for his heart condition. The Paramedics told her next time for her to call 911 cause these people are really unorganized and they don't communicate and didn't have the knowledge to call 911 instead of having a bay shore ambulance come and leave without him since they didn't have the equipment to care with a person with heart problems. This place should not be licensed it should be reviewed by the state and have it licensed revoke this is the worst place to put someone that has been very ill its more like a concentration camp than a rehabilitation facility.
