We had a very positive experience with Atherton for all of the higher-end appliances we purchased through them for a kitchen remodel. We worked with Beth who was very knowledgeable about products she sold and very competitive in pricing relative to the 2 other vendors we looked at. A week after ordering, when our range-top turned out to be on back order because of a distributor miscommunication, we became very concerned about the impact that this would have on our project completion (with family coming into town for an important family event). Although there was no obligation to do so, Beth and her team went the extra mile and provided a loaner of the same product (floor model) for us to use until our new range-top could be delivered. Way to go Atherton!

This place has a great selection of appliances and some of the salespeople are incredible. I eventually dealt with an outstanding salesperson, but only after I had a horrible experience with another person from their store in San Francisco (BSC Culinary).
The prices are higher than you'll find anywhere else -- they charge list for everything, but they will negotiate, so make sure you do your homework. Their prices start off about 25% higher than other places. Some of the salespeople would rather lose a deal than be competitive, so walk away if they don't match a competitive price. You'll both be happier.
Their installation scheduling service is challenging. Basically, this company has three different offices: one in SF, one in Burlingame and one in RWC. Parts of the business are scattered between the three offices, and none of the offices coordinate with each other. However, when they finally do show up, the installers do a great job.
At best what you'll get from Atherton Appliance is a great appliance at a market-competitive price, installed properly but with a lot of hassle.
I recommend them, but only if you deal with the right folks.Comment from Tom P. of Atherton Appliance & Kitchens 3/2/2012

Not to be confused with the other Yelp listing "Atherton Appliance" on Middlefield which is closed - http://bit.ly/ob31Ko - Atherton Appliance & Kitchen's showroom is open for business.
We recently picked up The Big Green Egg for our outdoor cooking needs and absolutely love it! Slow roasted pulled pork and homemade pizzas are a few of our our favorites on The Egg.
If you are in the market for quality products for your home, check out their showroom and do it on day when their doing a live demo so you can see how the products work. The sales staff are knowledgeable and helpful, and there are beautiful appliances, cabinets and countertop options to choose from. This is what you get from a local family business that's been around for over 60 years. If you just want a product to get the job done, then maybe the big box store is what you're after. But if you want a product that'll stand up to a family's needs and the service that should accompany the work-horse appliances you depend on, check out Atherton Appliance & Kitchens.
Thanks for The Big Green Egg AAK! Next on our wish list, something shiny and new from your laundry showroom! -
Review from Linda L.
My impression is that Atherton Applicance is a Minor-league team trying to play in the Major leagues. They need to either train their players to play at the Major league level, or hire Major league players.
By the time folks make their way here, they have a pretty good idea of what they want and they need to talk to someone who can actually answer questions on a technical level. What they don't want is a condescending attitude and salespeople who are trying to impress upon the potential customer that Atherton Applicance knows better than them. Uh, wrong.
You have some Major league customers coming through there, and they don't want to deal with Minor league quality. -

The showroom is beautiful and there's free food to be had on weekends, but the service leaves much to be desired.
When we were in the market for a bunch of appliances, Atherton Appliance tried to upsell us like crazy, so we ended up going elsewhere to make our purchases.
But not too long ago, we went back to Atherton Appliance to buy a stainless steel riser for our Wolf rangetop (and to grab some free samples, natch) -- we figured it was a safe bet to go to Atherton Appliance because it was close by, and we already knew exactly what we needed. (Plus, Wolf prices are the same the world over.) We figured that our visit would take 20 minutes, tops: All we needed to do was to flag down a sales rep, place our order, pay, and get the contact info for an installer.
Boy, were we wrong. It took FORTY-FIVE MINUTES for the sales associate to enter our order into the computer system. FORTY-FIVE MINUTES. The rep's explanation for the delay? His computer was down. I'm not sure, though, why this meant he had to take our credit card information down three separate times (after returning the card to us each time). Or why he wasn't able to enter our order after going to a different computer 20 feet away. Or why he disappeared for 15 minutes just to find us the contact number for the installer.
When the order was finally placed, the rep told us that the riser would come in 3-4 weeks, but we could get it quicker if we agreed to pick it up ourselves from Atherton Appliance's warehouse in Burlingame. We said fine -- my husband could pick it up on his way home from work in SF. The rep said he'd call as soon as the piece was ready for pick-up. But after 4 weeks had come and gone, no one had called. Finally, we called Atherton Appliance, and were told that the riser had been sitting in the warehouse for the past 2 weeks.
On top of all that, the installer that Atherton Appliance recommended never bothered to return our repeated phone calls; I get that some installers don't want to commit to small, inexpensive jobs, but it would have been nice to have gotten a call back. Fun times. -

My husband and I were to Atherton for appliances for our full kitchen remodel. We did buy everything from them - stove, oven, microwave, refrigerator, bar refrigerator, and dishwasher -- meaning, we did a very big order.
Overall, Elizabeth was very knowledgable and helpful in our shopping/learning stage. She gave us pros/cons and helped us pick a brand that would give us our desired functionality combined with price point we were looking for. So, in terms of associate knowledge, she was great.
Now, my big note that I would give ANYONE looking here is that Atherton has a NO RETURNS policy. For anyone doing a remodel, this may seem fine when you sign, but things change and you could end up very screwed.
In our case, we needed to change out the refrigerator because of size and it became a nightmare. Yes, we knew we signed a no returns policy so it would be complicated. However, after showing them the number of times some of our appliances had been delayed (yes, delayed and they only told us about it 2-3 days before they were to be delivered and our contractors were their waiting for them) they did agree to exchange the refrigerator. This is why I am giving the four stars as I know they didn't have to take it back and we appreciate that they did in the end.
All said and done, I highly recommend Atherton for information gathering on appliances. I also highly recommend them if you are just replacing appliances and thus don't have to worry about construction being changed and thus a "no returns" policy. For those who do have new construction, i would be VERY careful of any place that wont allow returns...remodels can change and you don't want to be stuck with appliances that have no home. -

I went to Atherton Kitchen and Appliance 3 times during non-weekend hours. Each time not one person asked me if I needed help. I was very disappointed in their customer service and overall attitude. I am about to embark on a major house gut and remodel and I will not give my business to atherton appliance. I found the folks in mountain view much nicer and friendlier and I would much rather give my money to them.
Ok, so I broke and went into Atherton Appliance to help me with my kitchen remodel. I met with Bella - here is the review of the meeting:
1. She was late
2. She was rude when I first met her - she seemed irritated I showed up to our apt. on time
3. She had zero imagination. I gave her the dimensions of my kitchen and she basically took my ideas put them in the computer. Didn't provide comments, didn't say "well maybe we can do this". I was thinking - I don't need you to just take my ideas and put them in a computer. I need a DESIGNER. Someone who will use their knowledge to expand on my ideas and improve the kitchen design. If I am going to spend 50K plus in your store I would expect some creativity, some comments, some thought. I even told her up front "I need your help, here are some ideas I have-what would you do, what do you think?"
After our meeting she explained she wasn't going to price anything. They do that the next meeting and that I would have to put a deposit down.
So my original review has not changed. In fact I even like them less now.Listed in: House Remodel

DO NOT BUY THERMADOR anything. Their service is useless. They actually had the nerve to tell me-get this-that my warranty for my fridge was ALMOST expired so they won't replace a cracked and overheated fridge that was 10 months old. 10 months! The warranty wasn't expred for another 2 months. This is what the supervisor said, not just a customer service rep. Then, they tried to pawn off the problem to their distributor Purcell Murray in the East Bay. After threatening with consumer affaires, BBB, contacting Atherton, and a lawsuit (it's good to have 2 lawyers in the family), they still didn't budge until I called Purcell Murray and let them know they were trying to stick the cracked unit to them. Once they got involved, it was ALMOST over.
If you have problems with Thermador, give them a quick and immediate assault. Mention "implied warranty" meaning you assume that is you pay $6k for a fridge, it should break down after a year, warranty or not. So, if they give you problems, call a lawyer immediately and let them know you're serious.
Then, I had a Thermador oven problem which was another nightmare. The fan started making all sorts of noise.
Just buy something from Sears. They seem to get it right. Spend the rest on a world vacation.1 Previous Review: Show all »

My husband and I have frequented Atherton Appliance on several occasions to check out their refrigerators and stoves. On one of our visits they were selling a Subzero Pro 48 refrigerator at a discount. We inquired about the fridge and was told that it was only a few months old and the reason it was discounted was they had to make room in their showroom so it got moved to the Atheron store. We wanted the fridge but because it was 900 pounds we were concerned if our entrance way to the house could support the weight plus if it could fit into the house. We live in the hills and there would be issues of whether the passages would be too narrow for the fridge to go through. He told us no problem he would hold the fridge for us and send his movers out to the house to access the situation and if it couldn't be done then we did not have to purchase the fridge. Perfect. Movers gave us the okay so we bought the fridge. There were some parts missing and we were told they would be shipped to our house. After several weeks passed we called and visited many times asking for our parts. Each time we were told no problem they would send them. Nothing, and by now it was more than six months.
In the meantime, while still waiting for the parts my husband decided to call Subzero to come and align the doors. When the service person came he told my husband that our fridge had been serviced before and it was two years ago. When we phoned Atherton about this they ignored us. My husband sent a letter and finally someone replied but not to our satisfaction. The lady at Atherton was defensive and defended her position, which was, you got a good deal so what are you complaining about. In the end, we got our warranty extended and they finally sent us the missing parts. They didn't seem to care that they misrepresented the product and that once we made the purchase they treated us poorly.
We purchased an expensive fridge and still more expensive than their other fridges, even after the discount, the manager also knew we were looking at high end stoves, dishwashers, and a microwave. There was a good chance we were going to buy all of our appliances there so it was surprising when we were given the cold shoulder. I don't expect you to kiss my feet but I do expect honest and decent service.
Though they have great stuff we will never be back. They are shusters who are not sincere and can only see pass making a quick buck. Even if you don't care about your customers, at least, have the decency to try and make amends once you've been caught out.Comment from Tom P. of Atherton Appliance & Kitchens 9/9/2011

My wife and I visited Atherton Appliance in Redwood City on a Saturday morning to discuss our kitchen remodel.
We were in the design center for at least 15 minutes, comparing Quartz countertop samples, selecting drawer handles, etc. The place was empty yet nobody ever acknowledged our presence. I was growing impatient so I looked over to one of the design associates to try to get her attention, she would not smile or acknowledge us which is shocking because she wasn't working or on the phone.
We eventually got fed up and left, I sarcastically thanked her for all her help.
Now this was a weekend morning so I was wearing jeans and a baseball cap, my pregnant wife was also dressed comfortably. If these people made the assumption that we did not look wealthy or worth the trouble, they were dead wrong. -

We used Atherton Appliance when we remodeled our home two years ago. We worked with Diane Earvin. I believe she is still there but in a different capacity now. While I can see what Jen W referred to in her review, i.e. the place was off-putting at first, our experience with Diane was quite excellent. Once you are working with someone there, it goes pretty smoothly.
She helped us make design and appliance choices, was patient and super-nice as we changed our minds and changed the order, and after we finalized, most of the appliances arrived before the promised date.
I would definitely include Atherton Appliance for future purchases, and I recommend it to friends all the time. -

The WORST. Nearly dropped my new fridge down a flight of stairs upon delivery. Then installed it improperly. Fired the installers. Sent someone else out, months and months later, the manufacturer fixed it. Only the owner of the company can fix anything, no point in talking to anyone else.
They are even worse on cabinets. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!Comment from Tom P. of Atherton Appliance & Kitchens 9/9/2011

Mike Placido is a great guy, incredibly knowledgeable, adaptive to your budget and issues (we had lots!), and reliable. We have compared ranges, dishwashers, and refrigerators at three well known stores near Palo Alto. We started at Atherton, recommended by our designer, and just met again with Mike Placido, and will definitely buy from him.

I continue to love our Kitchen which was created in a large part by Atherton Appliance. Chris helped in the design department and we received a discount for ordering cabinets, granite and applicances thru them. The granite installers made a mistake but Atherton made sure our order was handled beautifully and more than made up for any inconvenience.

Atherton Appliance & Kitchen carries higher-end kitchen appliances, cabinets, countertops and hardware, plus it has a great design service. Brands include Sub-Zero, Viking, Thermador, Dacor, etc. If you're not among the mega-wealthy, the place is a little intimidating when you first walk in. That said, the kitchen design consultants are top-notch. We're working with Bela V on our kitchen and we're really pleased with the design she cooked up. What's more, Bela worked our existing (and new) appliances into the design, which made me very happy. The quote for the cabinets is reasonable.

We spent quite a bit of time with them for our kitchen cabinets. They first gave us a 3 months lead time so we came back 3.5 months before our needed delivery date for the cabinets. Then they explained that it would now be a 4/5 months lead time because they pull shipping together from multiple customers and so we lost quite a bit of time. We worked with Bella and were not impressed by her customer orientation - you'd expect much better in a store like this.
Only bright star was Petros who really knows his stuff and took a lot of time to understand and explain the various options available.Comment from Tom P. of Atherton Appliance & Kitchens 12/4/2011

If I could give them NO stars, I would. In our remodel, we bought ALL our appliances from them and now we are dealing with a revolving door of people just to try to track our order. When our first salesperson left, they gave us a call, but now that they have the sale, I haven't gotten ONE call even though it's a few weeks past the time we were suppose to get delivery notification. When I called them, they give me attitude and makes me feel like I'm bothering them. All their stuff are universally priced, so go elsewhere!

If everyone at Atherton Appliance understood customer service as well as Tom and Chris (the owner and his son) this place would be five stars for sure. All the appliances for our full house remodel were purchased at Atherton, and they did a great job presale working with our architect and contractor to get us the right products from the right vendors. Everything we ordered was delivered when promised, and at a fair price. We had one major problem with a single appliance not being the right model. To be fair, the original mistake was probably the manufacturer's, not Atherton's--but it was difficult to get our salesperson to work with us to get the problem figured out and solved. We did solve the problem, and one call with Tom was all that was needed to make the situation right. We would use Atherton Appliance again for sure and would recommend our friends to them as well.
