Review from TJ B.
This place is great. I have been coming here for 15 years and it is always good. The trick is an owner who takes pride in his food. You get excellently flavored food, large portions, and everything is made to order. You may wait a bit on a busy day, but it is worth it. The meat is tender, the fries are crisp, and your platter is loaded with plenty of greek salad heaping with feta cheese. Wow.
I've mostly gotten the platters, but occasionally try the seafood and soups. All good. I agree that the gyro platter is very good. He gives you a LOT of meat and overall good quantities of everything.
BUT, if you want to TRULY EXPERIENCE Athens Grille, GET THE ZORBA PLATTER!!! It's only a few bucks more than any other platter and it comes with everything. It is fantastic. Lots of food, tons of flavor.
Today I went in after not being here for several months and, as always, wondered what's kept me away. One of the new items he has is a chicken and shrimp souvlaki platter. (pictured) It was just want I wanted...some of his marinated chicken along with a little seafood. As a bonus, it came with this warm dill lemon sauce (?) which was great. I don't know if that is standard on all seafood dishes, but I could have almost eaten it as a soup. Great stuff. I'll be back soon, Dimitri! -

Athens Grill is fine. Not wonderful and not bad. The servings are generous, so you won't leave hungry. It looks clean, and the service is adequate, too.
It is not worth a special trip, in my opinion, but if I'm in the neighborhood and craving a gyro, I'll stop there again. -

Mhh it's okay I don't think it left an impression on me where I'll crave for it unless I'm in the area. I should also say I am not a huge Greek, Mediterranean, or Middle Easter connoisseur but I do enjoy this style of food so my review may not be the best.
Went here one time because my sister and I were starving, looked on Yelp to see what was in the MV area. It's located in that small shopping center in MV where the McDonald's and CVS is. The restaurant is a small sit down spot with a very large menu. I got the Gyro with fries and pita bread and my sister got the same but sandwich. The portions are more than generous, my sister and I should have just split a platter. The service is decent didn't leave an impression but also wasn't terrible that I had to vent in my review. I would do back and I would recommend this spot if you're in the MV area but I feel I could get the same taste at Caspian or Moby Dick's. I know for my sister it left a big impression and has asked me to go back...I'm sure she has gone back sans me. -

I'll have to agree with the other 5 star reviews -- this place is excellent. I got the gyro platter: gyro meat with tzatziki sauce served on top of a greek salad with fries and pita bread.
It really is a hole in the wall. I learned about it from Yelp and found it with a GPS. Otherwise I would have never known it was there. There are only maybe...10? tables in the place.
The restaurant itself is small and simple but clean and functional. It does booming business (there was a line out the door almost the whole time we were there) but it looks like 95% of the customers are picking up take-out orders so we didn't have any trouble finding a table on a Friday night around 6pm. If you're looking for Greek around Germantown/Montgomery Village, this looks like the place to go. -
Review from Pete D.
A really excellent "cheap eat" spot for a crazy portion of food. Got the Gyro Platter this time and this lovely plate was stacked with meat, salad, cheese, fries, topped off with a very good tzatziki sauce. Highly recommend this dish.
Last time I was there, I got some kabob (can't remember which meat) and it was decent, not the greatest I've had. Our most recent visit, ordered the chicken kabob and it was over seasoned with salt. If the salt was cut back a bit, the chicken would be flavored pretty well with all the other spices going on.
One gripe would be the seating here, as the first time we went, it was packed and seating was tight. Had to wait for folks to leave. This place is tucked away in the Montgomery Village area, so if you have a GPS, it'd be helpful.
Again, get the Gyro Platter if you're a fan, you will definitely think about a second visit. -

Been going to Athens Grill for nearly 15 years now. It's still the best Greek food around. I never stray too far from the classics (gyro, souvlaki, platters), and I'm always pleased. And Dimitri treats everyone like family.
For those that haven't been in a while, they now accept credit cards (MC/Visa). -

I really miss the Athens Grill. The peasant salad is so good, along with every other food item I tried. The owners are so friendly and welcoming and like to remember what your order is.
Hope to visit again soon. -

If you're looking for authentic, fresh, and delicious Greek food, this is THE place to go! My fiance and I try to stop by the Athens Grill at least once a week, and there is good reason--we've never, ever had a bad meal here. Dimitri and the rest of the staff are always very friendly, courteous, and you can certainly tell that they are dedicated to their work.
My absolute favorite is the spanakopita, or spinach pie, a scrumptious creation of spinach and feta cheese wrapped in crisp, golden layers of phyllo and baked in the oven. I'd also recommend the village salad, which is comprised of always-fresh lettuce, tomatoes, and onions with just enough olive oil and feta to top it off. Their pita bread, cooked up nice and hot on the grill, is just heavenly. Try it with the taramosalta, a satisfying red caviar dip, or the dill-infused tzatziki sauce. But with all the choices--souvlaki, gyros, zucchini sticks, baklava, etc.--you just can't go wrong.
Athens Grill also exceeds my expectations for cleanliness and sanitation, which is very important to me. The tables and floors are kept clean and free of garbage or leftover food and the restrooms are in tip-top shape. To me, these are signs that the Athens Grill is serious about providing customers with top-notch service. Definitely recommended! -

Weak. Went on a Friday night and got the Ouzo meatballs. Rice and grease were more descriptive of the dish.
Next came the chicken souvlaki. Meh is about the best description for this.
Uninspired and overrated. Decor is 100% kitsch.
Yahoo and yelp both have rave reviews which were what inpsired me to try it. Cava is 50 times the restaurant this is. -
Review from Dianne K.
From the reviews, I had a different image in mind, so when I arrived at Athens Grill, I was slightly disappointed. However, you can never judge a book by its cover... right? Or at least, you're not supposed to.
I had to order the Gyro Platter since SO many reviewers recommended it. I haven't had a lot of Greek food in my lifetime so far, but I thought the food was pretty decent. Fries were nothing special, but they were cooked just the way I like them, so they were special to me. I also got one of their desserts, which was pretty tasty. It was flaky pastry with custard, peach, and raspberries inside with the scent of rosewater. Strange, but interestingly good.
The biggest gripe that I had was the lack of air conditioning in the restaurant. If you have that big of an oven, and you're constantly cooking meat, then shouldn't you invest in some ways to keep your customers cool? No matter. I guess it's all part of the experience.
This isn't a place you'd bring your first date to, but it's definitely a place you'd go for a satisfying, quick lunch. Cheap and yummy, I'll go again if I'm in the neighborhood. -

The food here is so delicious...word's can not describe. My girlfriend, who doesn't like onions, or tomatoes, readily devoured them from the gyro platter. I don't know what they put in their sauces, but it's really good!
The portions here are gigantic. If you're ordering a platter, and it seems expensive, it's because it can easily feed two average sized adults! -

Athens Grill is spot I regularly rely on for a good meal. Nothing extraordinary here, but sometimes consistently delivering good, authentic food is a good enough reason for me to keep coming back.
Meat is what you want to get at AG. Lamb, pork, rotisserie chicken (my favorite), doesn't matter, just pick one. AG consistently delivers meats with good flavors from their seasoning and cooking technique (char grilling or open flame rotisserie). Of course the gyro is the most popular, which I enjoy, but there are a few good gyros around Gaithersburg. The one thing I don't like about the place is they don't have a liquor license.
Dimitry (owner) also offers authentic Greek dishes that are always fresh and rewarding when I am feeling adventurous. One was a lamb shank in a delicious and unique sweet tomato based sauce (never tasted anything like that sauce before). Him and his wife are from Greece which adds a sense of authenticity to the place. And their love for good food comes out in ever meal served. -

I went to this place when it first opened about 17 years ago. They are hidden gem in suburban hell, i am almost a little ashamed to tell you all about this place. It is quaint, and small, with a few tables and are closed on Sunday's.
They have some of the best and most authentic Greek food in MoCo.
The two owners are directly from Greece and everything they make is homemade and from scratch.
Washingtonian Magazine did an article on them back in May 2007, saying how great their food was and their tzatziki sauce is the best.
Their Souvlaki's, kabobs, and Gyro are the best, lots of meat and sauce, excellent wood grilled pita bread. Watch out for the Big Fat Gyro, it means business (you have been warned).
They also have had to find dishes that are very authentic like Orzo with lamb stew and meatballs made with vegetables.
Oh, did i mentions baklava to die for; and whole fire roasted chickens over a hardwood charcoal spit.
You should go, no, seriously, you should go now... bye, bye, enjoy (but make sure you bring a mint, you will need it)Listed in: Best of MoCo

By far the BEST Greek restaurant I'm ever eaten. The servings are gigantic. This rice is very garlicky, which I love! The gyros are spectacular. The people are friendly. I will be back again and again.

Great food, low prices, and a helpful owner. The hummus was great. My parents enjoyed the gyro sandwich and chicken kabob salad. Even the fries are good and crispy.

So I took some of my co-workers here today and they enjoyed it too. I asked the owner if I can have some lettuce in my Big Fat Gyro and he said that it would take away from the dish, as in, it wouldn't be the same. It wasn't that they didn't have lettuce or that it wouldn't fit in it, he just thought that would destroy the dish that he created. I can respect that, however its my dish and I think he should have simply said I don't recommend it but if you want it... I still like this place very much. I would give it 4.5 stars on my second visit, but since I can't and this place is definitely a mom and pop shop, ill round it up!

So awesome and so good. The portions here are HUGE. I ordered the Pork Souvlaki platter and I had enough for two meals. I remember when this place first opened and I've always loved coming back home and grabbing a bite here. Fantastic food that is always fresh. I also like sitting out on the patio and people watching.

Branched out away from the gyro and tried the Athenian Chicken...loved it! Fried Zucchini is also money! Bummer that they are closed on Sunday's! Still the local staple for Greek!

Both me and my brother were craving for a good gyro / souvlaki type of sandwich. Did research on yelp and decided to try this place out based on all the good reviews.
This restaurant is in a strip mall in a neighborhood that I have never been to. I guess that's still considered Montgomery Village?
Anyhow, we went on a Saturday night and the restaurant was pretty empty.
I got a pork souvlaki sandwich and my brother got a gyro sandwich.
One main reason why we both got the sandwich instead of the patter is because we like to eat that thing like a sandwich. But those sandwiches come in pretty good size that it was impossible to hold it together and bite it like a sandwich. We ended up eating those things with fork and knife.
Anyhow, the pork souvlaki I got was good. they used pork tenderloin and it was really tender, and they seasoned it pretty well (although it was a bit on the salty side). The bread, lettuce, and cheese all seemed fresh.
My brother liked his gyro also. But he said it wasn't anything special.
So we both agree that this place makes good sandwiches, although nothing too special. and we probably wouldn't go all the way into that neighborhood just for that. -

I've been going to Athens Grill since it opened 18 years ago, and it has some of the best Greek food around. It's hard for me to pick a favorite, but the spanikopita and tiropita are the best I've tasted outside of Greece (and even then, I think I like the pitas at Athens Grill better).
My parents had a party, and they got a few of the whole chickens to serve. My mother-in-law couldn't stop raving about how good the chicken was. -

Athens Grill is a mom and pop place with the best Greek food I have honestly ever had! Everything is made from scratch. I go there about twice a month. The owners know me when I call to place my order which is cool! I typically get their Brest of Chicken platter or their Gyro platter. Their chicken and gyros are awesome! Price is good for the value of food that you get. It is a small place so I would recommend getting carry out over dining there. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves greek food, or just would like something a little more on the healthy side.

This is my favorite restaurant, bar none. If I were asked where I'd like to have my last meal, it would be Athens Grill. We have been going there since it opened 15 or 20 years ago. We've moved five times since we first went there and on trips back to the area, even after we moved to Iowa and later to Southern California, we've made it a point to go there whenever possible on trips to the East Coast. Everything we've ever had there has been absolutely delicious. My husband usually orders the gyro platter and I order the peasant salad and chicken souvlaki sandwich (with pita bread). Their Greek dressing is superb and can be purchased online. Dimitri, his wife and two daughters have always been so hospitable and have remembered us even when we've been away for several years. Their food is first-rate and I would give it even more stars if I could!
