I have limited experience with chiropractic care however desperation is a great motivator so after 3 months of lower back and glut muscle pain I started asking around about chiropractic care. Two people recommended Nick Athens so I made an appointment to see him. Nick is very experienced (he works on football players), easy going and has a very good staff of massage therapists.

At Athens, chiropractic care has 3 elements: massage, home exercise and adjustments.  Each adjustment is preceded by a massage. There is also a small gym on site and each time I go I have had one of the massage therapists do stretching work on me as part of the visit. I also have exercises to do at home twice a day. Dr. Athens "prescribes" the exercises based on what he notices/observes during your adjustment.

I went 3X a week  the first two weeks; It may sound like quite a bit of money . However, it's been worth every cent because I am feeling so much better - and actually did from visit one.

If you are a bit hesitant about chiropractic,  this office is a good one to try if you want to try something alternative to traditional medicine.  Though you may be skeptical,  I guarantee you will soon find yourself a convert.

I have been going to dr. Jerry Patrigoni for a few years now. He always fixes me right up. I have been to several chiropractors in my life and Jerry is the best. Also love Karen, his massage therapist, who loosens you up before getting adjusted. She is amazing!
Front desk staff and everyone else is great. I highly recommend this place.

This is the in-n-out, rack-em-and-crack-em kind of place. On my few visits to Athens Chiropractic, i was done in 15 minutes almost every time, and I felt like cattle. I'm not saying they are quacks (I'm a big fan of chiropractic care.) They just remind me way too much of a factory assembly line.  I've been spoiled by much more attentive, personal service and have since moved on to another Chiropractor.

I'm sure they have helped people. I'm sure they have fixed some serious problems, but there are a lot better Chiropractors out there. And I'm grading on a curve.

    my neck...my back...

I came here about 2 years ago when i was having some back issues--the chiropractor always scared me for some reason, but I had heard good things so I came in.  I have been coming back ever since.  I try to go on a monthly basis, and have Dr. Jerry give me adjustments.  However, sometimes I skip a month and I can really feel the difference.

They provide a pretty deep tissue massage prior to the adjustment and the appointments usually last about 20-30 minutes total.

I have been pretty much pain free for the time I have been seeing Dr. Jerry and I intend to keep it that way.

Dr. Nick Athens is by far the best chiropractor ever!! I have been going to him for the past 5 years after he found my broken neck. I broke C1 and C2 in four places in a cheerleading accident and the medic on sight said it was muscle spasms so we thought okay let's go to the chiropractor! Went to doctor Nick, he took x-rays and found it! He is the chiropractor for the 49ers!!
Every time I go I feel two inches taller.

You can always call them when they open and usually they can squeeze you in which has been very nice!

I moved from Fremont to Discovery Bay 3 years ago and still happily make the drive to go to Athens Chiropractic every time!

Dr. Athens is changing my life.  It is in present progressive form because I am still in the middle of the treatment, but even after one treatment, the change was so big I was just going "oh wow, oh my gawd" in his office.

My fitness teacher sent me to Dr. Athens as she noticed my back was really out (I was in pain but didn't realize it was that bad).  I was suffering from lower back pain from sneezing too much.  I have been suffering from this allergy for over 3 months, and sneezing etc. has taken its toll on my back and other areas of my body.

Amazingly, after just one treatment, my lower back pain was gone, just like that.  And I could finally touch my toes which I could never do for years!  Even my sinuses seem to be getting better, as if the oxygen is finally flowing into where it's supposed to.

Dr. Athens is very cool, down to earth and friendly.  The office is very well organized and beautifully maintained.  It just feels good when you walk into the place, and it's very important that you feel good entering a doctor's office...

I have another session tomorrow and will be coming back for maintenance thereafter.  I am very excited I found Dr. Athens and I highly recommend him to anyone considering giving chiropractic a try.

You know how people say "you're only as young as you feel"?  Well, before seeing Dr. Patrignani at Athens Chiropractic, I felt well over 68.  I had injured myself back in my college days and, as a typical guy, thought that I don't need a Chiropractor or help from any other type of physician.   I was as wrong as Carrot Top on celebrity Jeopardy.

The staff here is absolutely amazing.  Anna and Jamie at the front desk are always friendly and help me squeeze in those last minute appointments.  I can always get an the office visit when I need to.  Although I've heard nothing but great things about Dr. Athens, I personally see Dr. Patrignani (aka Jerry).  He has helped me figure out exactly what is going on with my back and has gotten me to a pain free life again.

Most recently I was completely immobilized by a quadding injury and Jerry was able to snap and pop joints I didn't even know I had to get everything loose and limber again.  less than a day later, I'm feeling 28 again.

I highly recommend this office.  Its convenient, modern, and most importantly, effective.

About 10 years ago, I went to see a chiropractor and I swore that I would never see one again.  But Athens is an awesome place to go because they listen to you and fix you literally.  I started going when I started having some tingling down my left arm and I knew that I was in trouble.  Dr. Patrignani is totally awesome in every way.  He takes pride in helping people feel good again and really takes the time to make sure you are back in feeling great again.

Now his assistant, Karen, is incredible too.  She does excellent deep tissue massage and she knows how to handle you in different situations.   For example, when I fell, she didn't do a deep tissue but gently massaged me.  It is people like Karen that make a huge difference in this world!  Thanks Karen!

I have built a nice relationship with this office and it feels like home to me!  The primary thing is that I feel so much better.  Now my whole family goes there for maintenance!

I have been seeing Dr Douglas Husbands at Athens Chiropractic Clinic for a few years now. Besides chiropractic, he also is a clinical nutritionist. For those of you who don't know the difference, clinical nutritionists are like doctors, except that they work on underlying causes of disease as opposed to pumping you full of pills that make you even sicker. So don't confuse these people with dieticians. Becoming a dietician doesn't require anywhere near the training or certification that a clinical nutritionist requires.

With Dr Husbands's guidance, my health is as good as it has ever been. He is a real student of this field called "functional health" - I would recommend him highly to anyone, even if you "think" you are healthy.

I'd seen 2 chiropractors around the Bay Area for chronic pain before seeing Dr. (Jerry) Patrignani at Athens. The first two were the type of doctors who give chiropractic medicine a bad name--mostly because they didn't listen to what my problems were.  Now I see Dr. Patrignani pretty regularly about  every 3 weeks (which is what my insurance covers) and he keeps my back in tip-top shape. As a mom of a toddler, I'm always running around and carrying my kid and asking my back to perform in ways it shouldn't!

After my initial consultation he set me up with some physical therapists in the office to show me some simple exercises to strengthen my back.

A double bonus is that with each session you get a bonus 5 to 10 minute warm-up massage, by Karen, who does great Swedish and deep-tissue work. Hurts so good. :o)

I have been experiencing some slight lower back issues lately.  Not debilitating, but enough to cause concern that I might throw my back out as I had done last year.  When it occurred last year I could hardly walk.  I visited a Chiropractor in Mountain View and they relieved the pain using heat and massage.  They also made some common sense recommendations that I still practice today: use correct posture, not too many pillows, use your legs for lifting, being generally mindful of good posture, etc.

This year my insurance changed so I had to choose a new Chiropractor.  I chose Dr. Jerry at Athens.  Athens is a very professional, efficient operation.  Dr. Jerry met with me and then sent me off to meet with another DC.  This guy took some x-rays and then handed me off to another person (a lot of the staff is really young, like under 30, and they're all doctors).  I'm not certain if it was because of my statements that I had never had a true chiropractic adjustment, but everyone on the staff took great pains to tout the benefits of their care.  The experience was similar to buying a new car.  They had visual aids, charts, and lots of anecdotal evidence.  Lots of head nodding and uh-huhs on my part.  I felt that they were trying to ascribe any discomfort in my body to my spine.   I was a little unsettled when one of the doctors showed me my x-ray and a healthy spinal column and asked what differences I saw.  Aren't you the doctor? There was just something about their manner that was causing my spidey-sense to tingle.  It wasn't a racket, but it just didn't have the same comfortable and knowledgeable feeling I get from my primary care doctor.

Ultimately, I left much more comfortable physically, but rather ambiguous about whether their care could help me down the line.  Let me be clear: My lower back now feels completely better; however I'm not sure I'm comfortable with the overall chiropractic experience.  I'm not convinced that I wouldn't have just healed on my own with proper care and common sense.

    Some Cons:

The doors to all of the examining rooms were left wide open constantly.  It was quite noisy.
Dr. Jerry seemed very pressed for time.
There was a lot of jargon thrown around.
No real way to measure the changes that he was making.
I'm not really interested coming back time and again until the insurance coverage is exhausted.
These photos (http://goo.gl/B5jLK) of children being adjusted also deeply disturbed me.

    Some Pros:

Probably the best massage I've ever had.
You get a massage with every visit.
They're very efficient and get you in and out quickly.

I've been to a couple of different chiropractors but it wasn't until I went to Athens and saw Jerry (Dr. Patrignani) that I found my back problems cured!!
I've even given two of my friends a challenge who were complete non-believers in chiropractic care.  I told them if Jerry couldn't answer all your questions and fix your back, I would pay for their visit.  I still have all my money and Jerry has two new believers in chiropractic care.   Thanks for all your help with relieving my back problems!!

This was my first time to a chiropractor. Dr. Athens himself deserves 5 stars, no question, but I had a terrible experience with the accounting rep over an insurance/payment issue - it basically ruined my day. If you do go here, be sure that 1. you are 100% familiar with what your insurance will and will not cover and the associated costs, 2. document any exceptions they make to their normal policy, and 3. understand that Dr. Athens does not accept Blue Cross. Here's a summary of my visit:

I arrived 10 minutes early and waited 25 minutes before I was called in (not out of the ordinary.) The nurse (technician?) went through the normal questions and was pretty friendly. She was clearly new and made a few mistakes (including a mistake on one of the x-rays,) but others were there to help, so that was fine.

Then I received a massage, which was great! The masseuse was very friendly and seemed to have a lot of experience. He himself deserves 5 stars as well.

Then Dr. Athens came in. He was very friendly, patient, thorough, and seems to be genuinely dedicated to what he does. The treatment went well, and it really did make my back feel noticeably better.

Then they sent me back to their gym (with the same masseuse) to go over stretches & exercises that are supposed to strengthen your back. This also went well - they were very patient and even though I admitted that I probably wouldn't diligently stick to what they suggested, I found it helpful.

So here's where things went downhill... due to a miscommunication in insurance & their policies, I had a lengthy argument with their accounting person. It was embarrassing and frustrating. She kept jumping to conclusions, cut me off repeatedly, and treated me like I was an idiot. She had a sarcastic smile on her face throughout our conversation, and kept saying "we're here to help," even though she wouldn't take a moment to sit back and try to think of how to best handle the problem, or to try and look at things from my perspective. If I don't go back, it will be because of my experience with her. I should note that money really wasn't the problem - it was more the principle of the situation.

If I knew that the accounting person wouldn't be there, I would go back without hesitation. Dr. Athens did a great job!

I'm still a believer!  Seeing Dr. Athens has been life changing for me.  Whenever my back is feeling out of alignment or I have a pinched nerve (which is all to often) he is able to get me back on track in a visit or two.  He knows what he's doing and his staff are all great.
