We don't eat out all that much, but this is one of the places we'll go back to again and again. We've certainly tried a few different things here, but we always go back to our main Athenian Grill staples: gyros, the gyro plate, and falafels.
* The falafel is good and hits the spot when you want it, but I've had better.
* The gyros and gyro plates, however, are VERY good. The lamb is always the perfect texture and I always get an extra side of the tzatziki sauce because it's darn near good enough to eat by itself.
* Eating outside overlooking the marina is always nice, highly recommended if the weather is agreeable.
* Prices are reasonable for the occasional nice weekend lunch.
Bottom line, if you're in the area and are in the mood for Mediterranean food or if you live around here, it'd be in your best interest to try it out. -

Suisun City, CA
I've been coming here for over fifteen years, since I was a little girl. It's my familiy's favorite restaurant and I have NEVER had a bad experience here or had somethingI didn't like.
Sometimes I try to break away from the same routine and try going to other Greek places but I always regret that choice because the Athenian Grill is the best Greek food around. No doubt about it.
I usually always get the Gyro plate. Best.meat.ever! Omg, seriously. It's like they take a chunk of heaven, roast it on a spit, slice it into thin strips and serve it to you on pita bread. Have you ever had roasted slices of heaven on pita bread? If you haven't then your life is incomplete! ;)
I am also madly in love with their falafels. Yes, eat them, then go home and come back for dinner and eat them again. If Sam I am could eat green eggs and ham then you can eat falafels. Do it.
Oh and then there's the pastrami sandwhich. If the gyro is a chunk of heaven then the Devil popped up and brought this pastrami because it is the best chunk of gluttonous sin you will ever eat. The portion could literally make four sandwiches. No frickin joke. My dad and I split a sandwich and I end up pulling half the meat off my half, taking it home and making another sandwich. The meat is so juicy and flavorful. I've just never had anything like it.
Best onions rings of your life. They're the size of your face, they have a crisp, dry breading. Not greasy at all. They are amazing, as long as you really love onions.
So there you have it. Roasted slices of heaven. devilicious pastrami, fanfricktastic falafels and onion rings the size of your face.
Seriously, what else could you want?
Oh, but for you demanding people--the atmosphere is also great. I don't so much enjoy the seating inside, it's uncomfortable; however, seating on the patio is relaxing and fabulous. You overlook the harbor and feel peaceful (as long as the wind isn't knocking you over).
If you haven't been and my review hasn't won you over than you are the most stubborn and hard to please person ever. Seriously. Go to the Athenian Grill. Eat your heart out. :) -

I made my way here after a meeting in Suisun. I don't typically find myself eating anywhere in Suisun, but Athenian Grill is my exception. I typically gravitate towards Greek food because I am a fan of a Mediterranean diet and I love Chobani yogurt.
I came in during the lunch rush and was scanning the menu for some good to-go selections. The gentleman server/greeter was VERY accommodating, answering my questions as well as serving up some personal opinions about "what's good."
When I approached the register to order, I was made to feel like I was in the way by the other servers. Apparently, there is only one register and only one cashier that was supposed to ring up both sit-down orders AND to-go orders. I'm sure all of those servers would be very hospitable if I was sitting down in their section and would inevitably tip them, but because I was a walk-in/stand by customer, I was second rate.
I ordered the combination plate that had like every appetizer on it. I forget what it is called, but it had spanokopita, some pita bread, greek salad, dolmades, tiki sauce (I won't even try to spell it correctly), and some other good stuff on there. LOVED it. The dolmades tasted a little EVOO'd out, but I'd eat them again.
The place has a very nice location. The service -- eh, you know my take on it: if you are a sit down customer, it might be good, but take-out customer gets NO SOUP! It is a little pricey; my plate was $11-$12 and it feeds one comfortably. Food was tasty -- it's a nice break from Daphne's Greek Cafe... but also kind of the same if you catch my breeze. I would return to eat here again ... on payday. -

I have been dining at the Athenian Grill for over 10 years now, The food is great and the service is good. This is Solano County's go-to place for delicious gyros, souvlaki, and other Greek delights. The family that runs this place treats you like you are one of their . They have been there a long time and that is saying something!

Yum! The best greek food anywhere! I've tried many different greek restaurants but Athenian has them all beat in flavor and atmosphere. Love sitting on the patio any time of year. Best of all they serve yummy hamburgers and onion rings that my whole family enjoys as well.

I was expecting more, I'd hate to give Athenian Grill 3 stars but I have too. I orderd the Calamari among other items. I guess I didnt catch the part where the calamari was not fresh and looked like cheese noodles. It tasted and looked cheap, I'm talking about frozen food section at your local supermarket stuff. I felt like I was paying too much for the food. I dont know, I had my hopes up a little bit too high.

So yeah, it was pretty horrible. Everything was made from frozen food. I had the salmon and veggies, my girlfriend got the"ny strip" hers came with fries? What the hell? For 16 dollars? Really?
Nothing was seasoned, and my girlfriend said it was worse than denny's food, at outback steakhouse prices. Never again. -

Another blast from my past. I used to go here to get burgers and fries with all my Crystal Middle School peeps! =)
I remember loving the fries because they were fresh and the burgers were alright. My favorite part about the restaurant is the back patio area near the marina. I used to love getting soup and sitting out there.
I remember the baklava was pretty good too. -

There are not other Greek restaurants around this area as far as I know so this is the only choice. I have tried better ones but the food it's not bad at all specially the gyros. The best part of this place is probably sitting out in the patio next to the marina in my opinion.

Found out about this place about 6 years ago and now it's one of my favorite local restaurants. The meals here are moderately priced, and good sized portions. Athenian Grill usually has some daily specials posted on the board as you walk in. I've tried a few of these they've been great. They also have some American hamburgers, french fries, hot dogs, and chicken nuggets that are perfect for when you are dining with picky kids.
When I first started to frequent Athenian Grill, I only ordered the gyro sandwich and I've always enjoyed it. I love their gyro meat! Later I branched out and tried their Mezethakia appetizer platter which includes spanakopita, tyropita, keftethes, and dolmades as well as a few other things. It is a very tasty sampler of some Greek favorites.
I've also enjoyed their Greek salad which comes in 2 sizes. The large is a lot of salad! They use iceberg lettuce for the salad though and that is a minor drawback in my opinion. Sometimes I order the salad with a side of gyro meat when I'm dining in for lunch. I like topping the salad with the gyro meat.
If you ask me, the best deal of all is their gyro plate at dinner time. It includes pita bread, a generous serving of gyro meat, rice, and a side Greek salad. I love ordering this for takeout and usually have enough for nearly 3 meals. At just over $11 with tax, it is a great bargain!
Of the thirty or more times I've been to Athenian Grill, I've only been disappointed once and that was when I ordered the fried calamari to go. That one time it was overcooked and chewy as well as being a little on the greasy side. Definitely not the norm here since I've had it before and after that one occasion, and it was cooked to perfection.
During nicer weather, Athenian Grill is a great place to eat for lunch or dinner on their outside patios next to the waterfront. Almost feels like you're on a mini-vacation! -

I have never had anything here that wasn't amazing. I've had everything from their chili fries, sweet potato fries and burgers to their mousaka and gyros.
I work a block from here and it's quite possibly my favorite restaurant on the waterfront. I love everything from here so much that I can't even tell you my favorite dish, try it all, it's sure to be amazing!
I would suggest not going right at lunch time as they get a bit busy, I have had better luck having a late lunch/early dinner. But if you can't wait for the lunch rush to die down, the food is well worth the wait!! -

Ohhhh, outrageously good food!! I can't say this even approaches authentic Greek food... but I don't give a damn - it's so good! It's like Greek food westernized with American comfort.
Gotta go with the gyro and side of fries or onion rings... or both! Mmmm... fries and onion rings..... ::Homer drool::
I have no reason to ever to go to Suisun City, but somehow I seem to find myself here every couple months...... -

Finally made our way over to Suisun and tried out the Athenian Grill. I had heard all kinds of raves about it so I was looking forward to some good eats! I have to admit it was better than I thought it would be. I ordered the beef Slouvaki with Greek salad and rice and my husband got a steak sandwich along with an order of fries. While the meat was a little tough, the service was outstanding. I loved the salad as it had lots of feta (my favorite). My husband's steak sandwich was good but it seemed like it was skirt steak, which he is used to rib-eye or new york on a sandwich.

It was a gorgeous day to enjoy a lovely meal with a veiw of the Suisun Marina. (one of the perks of this eatery)
I've been here serveral times with my mother, ussually for lunch. Everything I ever order is always delicious. There is always a ton of food which we can never finish everything we order.
I love the Spanakopita, the greek salad is refreshing and one of my new addictions is a combo of sweet potatoe fries mixed with regular fries... Super good, you will never be able to eat regular fries again once you mix them with the sweet potatoe fries.
The only negative thing I have to say is the servers are not very fast nor friendly. I have had a few different servers but they all seem a little slow and not as friendly as they should be for providing customer service.
Go for the food and excuse the service :)

The Athenian Grill is a clean and welcoming restaurant with a moderately diverse menu, and basic no-frills food.
That's pretty much all I have to say on the subject. -

I am a really big fan of the gyros here...my sister and brother-in-law brought me here one day and I was hooked!! The calamari was a great starter and the gyro with that yummy sauce just made my day! :) I don't know much about Greek food, but from what I tasted I liked. The gyro looked kind of like a taco, but not...I'm not really sure how to describe it..you just have to try it for yourself. It's that good..OoOo...But ask for extra sauce!!!
It's a sweet little restaurant by the marina and on a nice sunny day, I suggest sitting at the patio outside. -

I've been to this place many times, but most of the times I've been there I get the gyro, they're just so frickin' good! It's hard for me to pass up an opportunity to have one of these suckers.
I'm usually not big on fries, but their fries are pretty good. They make their fries fresh, in n out style (kinda) and i know this for a fact. They're just well seasoned and hefty portions, you can get full off fries alone.
Great location too, right on the waterfront. The baklava is also yummy, gotta try it. -
Review from Michelle B.
Fairfield, CA
I'm not impressed. How hard is it to NOT put sauce on my gyro when I ask for the sauce on the side and not ON the gyro?? And I ended up with thick, spongy, soggy chunks of meat rather than the thin, crispy stuff. GROSS! Come on people, I've eaten here before, I know how your gyros are and this was WAY sub-par.
I'll also add that this was my first time trying the onion rings and while you get a lot of super huge onion rings for your money, they are bland and unappealing. The best part of the salt on them.
What a huge waste of $15.
The wait for my food was super long too. For that wait, I expected my food to be...I dunno...correct? I am sorely tempted to never come back. They got 2 stars rather than 1 due to the servers being polite and asking several times if I had already been helped. The servers are on their toes, polite and smiling. Now if only everyone else there could get their act together...
Called the manager to see if she would remedy the situation, was told she was 'in a meeting' and would call back. So far, no call back.1 Previous Review: Show all »

This place is awesome. I've been here several times before and I'm never disappointed by their delicious food. In addition, they have a lake with a dock in the back of the restaurant. There is seating on the deck, so if it is a particularly nice day and you want a little more privacy, you can sit under the shade as you look out at the view. Inside the restaurant, it is decorated in truly greek style. From the moment you set foot in here, you feel like you've been transported to a Greek restaurant in Greece. It has a very casual, relaxing atmosphere.
Last time I went here, we had the nicest waitress I've had in a long time. We began by ordering the fried zucchini with a side of tzatziki sauce. The outside is crispy, the inside is soft and delicate. Combined with the cool, creamy tzatziki sauce, it is pure heaven. For those of you who do not know what the heck tzatziki sauce is, it is greek yogurt (which doesn't taste like plain yogurt. Instead it resembles sour cream more than anything else) mixed with cucumber, sometimes dill, lemon juice, garlic, olive oil, etc etc. In other words: try it.
Their french fries are really good too. The outside of each fry is covered in a crust that crunches when you bite into it and the inside is soft. It's the perfect french fry (especially when you forget about the ketchup and use tzatziki sauce instead). When you order this, you get a lot of it. Which, is totally fine by me. A mound of hot, crispy french fries? Yes, please.
Their pita bread is outstanding. Probably because it is homemade. It is hot, soft, fluffy, and chewy. Their hummus is outstanding here, as well as their tzatziki sauce.
I also tried, for the first time, their cheesy potato soup. It was thick and creamy with real chunks of potato. I could tell it was homemade (like everything else here). I loved it.
Every time I've been here, I ordered the moussaka. It is basically a Greek lasagna composed of eggplant, beef, potato, and this rich, creamy bechemel sauce (which is made with cream or milk, butter, flour, etc). I definitely picked up a hint of nutmeg in this dish, which I love. All together, it's a nutty, cheesy, meaty, potatoey, eggplanty, creamy slice of awesome goodness. It comes served with fresh vegetables (carrots, broccoli, etc) and buttery, yellow rice that has a hint of lemon.
For dessert, I got a piece of baklava to go. I took a bite on the way home and it was warm, buttery, crispy, delicate, and delicious. The honey just melts on your tongue. So good.
My mom ordered a chicken wrap with lentil soup. She was going to save the rest of her lentil soup for lunch the next day. But our awesome waitress took it a step further. She came back with a full serving of lentil soup, packaged in a container, with a slice of lemon. She told my mom to put her remaining soup with this one and take it home so she could have it later. Was our waitress awesome or what?
Lentil soup: $0
Awesome waitress: priceless
We really had a nice experience while we were here. Whoever was our waitress that night, thank you for the memories! :) -

Vacaville, CA
Looked fun and promising. My first visit... And my last visit. Chicken and lamb dishes were both dry. Vegetables were dry and unseasoned. Rice uninspired. Each plate "garnished" with a one inch cube of Feta and two olives. Wow. Other reviews say the pita bread is "heavenly", but trust me, store bought pita in a baggie will taste just as heavenly if you just warm it up. The only place this qualifies as Greek cuisine is at a fair where it's served on a paper plate with a plastic fork for $3.00 a person. Definitely not worth the $10+ price tag per entree, especially for lunch. Oh... and did I mention the bathrooms were dirty? Yep. Bab's Delta Diner (right next door) is a better choice.

I been here twice and its a good place to eat. You can eat inside or outside facing the marina. Nice area and location. I had the fish & chips and it was quite tasty, I got full fast and had to take the rest home. Second time I came, I ordered a burger and man it took me forever and a day to eat because it was so big lolsz.
I like like they play music in the bathroom too lolsz. The service was good and the people who worked there were helpful and friendly so brownie points for that..i needa try their gelato..needa update. -

Suisun City, CA
Out of the 17 years that I've lived in Suisun, I finally decided to give this place a try the other day. The food is decently priced and the portion sizes to their entrees are huge! My friend and I ended up sharing some of her meal since she basically got full off of the salad & pita bread that came with her meal. The food here is delicious also! I LOVE the outdoor eating area because of the great view! My only complaint is that the waitress serving us didn't seem to be to attentive with us. We practically had to flag her down to get our refills. Other than that, I will visiting this place again very soon.

Fairfield, CA
The husband and I went to lunch here and got some gyros. Food is amazingly good, but service was REALLY BAD. Not to mention, the restaurant is super tacky, and not in an eclectic or charming way. We arrived towards the end of lunch hour rush, so it was still a bit busy, but defiantly was starting to clear out. Our waitress seemed to assist everyone around us before getting to us and it took an unreasonably long time between each task such as: taking our order, bringing our drinks, getting our food to us, bringing our check, picking up the check... etc. We never got a refill on our iced tea and coke, never got our ketchup (she asked if we needed it, but never brought it), never cleared our table, and made a mistake on our check and charged us for a sandwich we never ordered. The receipt that she gave us only had the total amount without showing what we ordered so when my husband brought it to the counter, it showed the mistake. She was clearing off other people's tables around us and cleaning and never asked us if we needed anything or if everything was good.
Although we were happy with the food, i think next time we'll just order to go. -

Over-rated, period.
The only redeeming quality of this place is the view. I have been 4 or 5 times, service is not the best. Dolmas - the grape leaves are awful. Gyros are okay. Servers always seem to be inconvenienced to be helping you. My wife has gotten sick shortly after eating here twice. Will never go back. -

It's okay. Just don't get the feeling that there is a good chef in the back working the burners. I had the salmon. So "Plain Jane" for the price. There are many other better places to eat than this. Not trying to tell you to go somewhere else, but just don't expect mouth water food here.

Review from Gary E.
We had such a wonderful time at the Athenian Grill!
Situated in the heart of Suisun City's waterfront district, this family style Greek restaurant had plenty to offer.
The menu featured appetizers, soups, salads, greek entrées, burgers, sandwiches, kid's meals and homemade desserts.
We started off with the Meze (spanakopita, tyropita, keftethes, dolmades topped with avgolemono sauce, kalamata olives, feta cheese, pita bread and tzatziki sauce).
It's the bomb! And the dolmas - oh my goodness delicious...
Our girls shared a Gyro Plate (beef served with rice, pita bread, kalamata olives and feta cheese) and liked it.
My boy devoured his Gyro Sandwich in record time (beef wrapped in pita with onions, tomato and tzatziki sauce) then ate the girls' salad.
The wife and I ordered a Souvlaki Plate (skewered beef for her and lamb for me, grilled onions and bell peppers served with rice, pita bread, kalamata olives and feta cheese) with Greek Salad. Delicious!
At first I tried to baby the salad to leave room for the entrée but failed.
Next thing I knew it was gone!
Hefty portions left us with a to go bag.
Magnificent service and good food!
You've gotta try the double burger Pastrami Sandwich and take a picture!

This place is consistantly good.
Last night I made the drive (a little over an hour and a half) because I just had, that's right JUST HAD to have a cup of their lentil soup.
... and some of their dolmas.
Ok, and some spanakopita too..
ok ok ok.. fine - I ate the whole Meze platter, along with both sides of the rich, lux pita bread and the most incredible tazaki sauce.
yes, yes yes.. AND I ate some of my dates popcorn shrimp as well (wow - were you watching us dine on their lovely heated patio or what??)
and to top it all off the baklava and greek coffee were a must.
I walked in and rolled out of there - it's a ton of food (and yes, I did leave with doggie bags for lunch today -- incase you are wondering)
Such an amazing place. The staff is always friendly and warm - they know their way around the menu, and are excellent at helping you find a dish you are comfortable with if you aren't a full on greek food freak like myself.
So good... worth the hour and a half drive, and let me tell you, to get to this place, I had to drive past another excellent greek place to do so, not near it, like pass it's driveway and not turn in - cause I had my heart set on Athenian Grill.Listed in: Top Spots away from Home, Ethnic - mostly Curry based, Greek & Russian

***** CUSTOMER APPRECIATION DAYS $1.00 OFF *****
I ordered lunch today and was told that Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays are customer appreciation days and you get $1.00 off of lunch.
Today's lunch was wonderful. I bought the GYRO Lunch and shared with my daughter. It was more than plenty for two for $13.00 (If I waited until tomorrow, It would have been $12.00). The rice was light and fluffy, the Gyro meat itself was tender and well seasoned, the pita very fresh. The Greek Salad was...oh god yum! (Can you tell it's my favorite?).1 Previous Review: Show all »

I have always enjoyed coming here because of the view, because it isn't a chain restaurant, and because it is a change of pace. I also enjoy people watching if I sit outside on the patio. Until recently, we have always had friendly, competent servers.
Unfortunately. the past 2 times that we have been, the service has been abysmal. The first time, we thought it was an anomaly...slow, not friendly, and not service-oriented. The second time (different wait staff), the service was even worse. I had to ask three times to get condiments. We couldn't get refills, the server would disappear for long period of times, and the food was shoved in our faces as the server walked away as quickly as possible. We had to wait forever for our check. We noticed that another patron got so tired of waiting for his check that he walked to the counter to obtain his check and pay for his food.
I really hate seeing this service problem happen since I did enjoy going there as a change of pace.Listed in: Restaurants to try (or not)…

This is good stuff. The location is nice and if you sit on the patio you get a nice view of the little harbor. The owner and his wife are very friendly and even the kitchen staff is a pleasure (I was a regular when I was in the area and when I walked in it would be a friendly "hello" and "how are you?" and we would even joke around... a lot.
Okay, on to the food. I have had most of the items on the menu and have not been disappointed by a single one of them. The pastrami burger is a nice and filling burger with hot pastrami, the gyros are good, their pastichio is really good, and my brother really likes their mousaka (i am not a fan of eggplant so I have yet to try it). My fallback dish when I want something simple is the chicken souvlaki plate which has a very tasty rice pilaf. They try to make as much stuff as is practical and the staff takes pride in their work which shoes in the food and attitude. -

Great location on the water. I had the mixed Greek Plate (Mitz something, I think) with Spinokopita, triokopita, veg. and dolmadas (stuffed grape leaves). Sorry for my terrible Greek spelling... All were very tasty. Hubster had fish and chips that were delish. Friend had very tasty Solvaki. We had Spinokopita for an appetizer which was yummy. We will go back when in the area. Wait staff were nice, even when we sat and chatted for hours during rush hour noon. Portions were large enought that we took food home.

I like this place. I always get the Gyro platter and it is consistently good.
The waitress I almost always get is very friendly and cute.
Won't ever win a Michelin star but for Suisun it's not bad.
