I dragged ***sorry, I meant invited** my husband to Athenas Pallas and I am so glad I did! We have been here for dinner on three occassions.
I have tried the roasted lamb and the lamb chops. Really tasty! Dessert to go to is baklava. Freshly made. The sides are nothing spectacular (rice, steamed veggies), but well cooked. I like the grape leaves for appetizer (two big and warm grapes leaves with some type of white sauce over them), then I can barely finish my entree....haha!
Love the available parking also! 4.5 stars. -

We ventured down to 23rd street on a Friday night and spotted Atenas Pallas behind the row of restaurants. We checked out the menu outside and decided to enter. Upon entering the dining room, I immediately noticed the outdated decor; however, the restaurant was packed albeit with very few people under age 60.
Service was very slow. We waited about 10 minutes before a server made it to our table. We ordered tzatziki and the dolmades appetizers, which were excellent. I was equally hopeful for our main dishes. Unfortunately, they did not compare to the appetizers. I ordered the baked tilapia and my husband the eggplant vegetarian dish. The tilapia and the eggplant tasted ok, but they were served with some sad looking vegetables.
Overall, I was under impressed with the main course. The restaurant is fine, but it is not stellar. If I were to return, I would stick with the appetizers and avoid the main dishes. -

After walking around south 23rd street a buddy and I accidentally found Athena Pallas. The restaurant was dead on a Monday night.
I totally forgot this place existed as the entrance does not face 23rd st. I was really in the mood for a gyro but settled for the Dolmades avgolemono (Stuffed grape leaves with ground beef, rice, and veggies). It was good. I actually preferred my buddy's Kapamas (braised lamb shank) as it seemed to have more flavor.
We also tried some Greek Beer "Mythos". I would compare it to a Heineken but with a lager taste.
The service was fast and friendly. I'll definitely come back and try their gyro during lunch. -

I've been to Athena's a few times, and each time the food has yet to disappoint ! They use high quality olive oil that is really tasty to dip your bread in, and as an entree I usually get the braided lamb shank. It's awesome! The only reason why I'm giving it 4 stars vs. 5 is because the last time I went the waitress attending us
o was pretty slow. But the food is really good and the atmosphere is very warm and friendly! -

We stopped by one Friday night in the mood for something different. As others have said, parking isn't a problem.
The restaurant is that typical outdated, family type of place where the customers range from babies to seniors. The staff all seemed to be family. Our waiter was an elder gentleman, he was friendly but slow - it took quite some time for us to get our check after we'd had dessert.
I think I expected different options or more varied entrees on the menu. As a vegetarian I thought a Greek place may have some new flavors. We ordered the fried cheese appetizer and it came out hot and tasty. My boyfriend ordered the spicy meatball (was he hoping we ended up at an Italian place?) and I had a stuffed spinach thing that now I can't remember the name of.. I want to write burrito or enchilada but it was like that! I enjoyed it and had enough for leftovers the next day. The sides were a bit strange and tasteless - white rice, steamed broccoli, and carrots. We weren't too impressed with our meals overall. -

I have been to Athena about a dozen times. I never reviewed it because I agree with most of the recent (favorable) reviews and did not have much to add. But now I do have something that may be worth mentioning.
First, what I agree with in the recent reviews is that this restaurant serves a nice menu of better than average Greek cuisine, is reasonably priced for what you get, and has a relaxed low-key atmosphere. I have never had a bad meal here. I particularly like the salads, the grape leaves, and the eggplant dishes.
What is surprising to me given the quality of the restaurant is the ease with which one can find a table. The restaurant is clearly above average even for Crystal City, yet a party of two can arrive without reservation prime time on a Saturday night and stand a good chance of being seated promptly.
Also, there is ample parking, another rarity in the 23d Street area.

I am very glad to have tried this place. My boss' wife is Greek, and kept bragging about this restaurant. So, after much delay, we finally went with them for dinner this weekend. What a treat! I let her order, since I don't know much about Greek food.
The lamb was awesome, and the pre-dinner small plates were amazing. I couldn't spell or pronounce them if I tried, so I won't. One was a fried goat cheese of some kind, and the other was a plate of sizzling peppers and cheese. AMAZING! -

I recently went here for dinner and ordered the combo platter. The food was so-so and nothing really stood out as great. The service was lacking, but friendly. I could have accepted the slow service if the place was extremely busy, but it was not. I will be looking elsewhere for a good Greek restaurant.

Came here with my family on Tuesday night. My Dad is from Greece and he is always super picky when it comes to Greek restaurants, but he really liked this place.
The exterior looks a bit odd, but the interior is much nicer. I was surprised at how crowded it was for a Tuesday night. It was a good thing we made reservations.
We ordered a bunch of appetizers: saganaki, spanakopita, sampler spreads with pita, and octopus. All were very good. The corfou dava entree was delicious! My family also ordered the fennel scallops, baked eggplant, and whole broiled fish, all of which were decent.
The only bad thing was the wine. We tried a Greek white wine and it was much too acidic. It's hard to get good Greek wine here in the States, so I recommend just sticking with the US wines on the list. -

Mags leaving?!?!?!?! Well we had to have a goodbye dinner. And Lino J. knew the perfect place: Athena Pallas.
The wine, the bread, the entrees, oh the appetizers. Lino J. just *had* to have the oktapodi! It was pretty "meh" to me.
I ordered the Palinia Ellenike or combo platter for my main course. Oh the grape leaves. Oh the moussaka. Oh the pastizzio. Yum to the meatball and spanikopita! And OMG to the rice and vegetables..
The dessert was unmatched. Yum. We ordered 1 dessert and four spoons. Yum it was Greek key lime pie. It was your typical Key Lime Pie atop phyllo dough instead of graham cracker crust. It was good. But I could have so gobbled down one of the more traditional Greek specialties like baklava or something. Ah well. I made it through the unusual phyllo crust and onto the (YES!) ouzo digestive.
Lino J. and I walked to the metro by the end of dinner and that was a perfect way to let off some steam prior to boarding the yellow line.
Athena Pallas was truly solid Greek restaurant. No shocking Greek menu items I'd never seen or heard of before. Just your typical specialties. That is all.Listed in: Crystal City Wasteland

W-O-W!
My wife and I went to this local restaurant, located just a block away from an entire block of restaurants on 23rd street in Arlington. The look of the outside is a little humble, but do not be put off by this. Open the door. Go in!
We entered the restaurant and were quickly greeted and seated by a very friendly hostess who looks like everyones greek grandmother. Our waiter was a very friendly gentleman, who even offered to drink my wife's martini for her if she didn't find it to her satisfaction. Now that's service. The martini's were traditional, with olives, and blended precisely - good martini taste, without excessive burn that improperly mixed martini's carry.
Ok, enough of the preliminaries - the place is nice on the inside and the silverware is clean. Moving on...
The food....
Very good! If I grew up in a greek household, this is what I would imagine greek home-cooking to taste like - fresh, flavorful, and well put-together. I ordered the scallops w/fennel, and my wife ordered the combination/sampler platter.
Portions were generous, and the taste was fantastic. My scallops were nice and large, tender, and the were swimming in a light white sauce with spinach and onions - cooked to perfection - no one taste outweighed the others. Even the string beans and carrots were cooked to perfection and flavorful.
My wife's combination platter: mousaka, spanikopita, pastitsio, dolmades and soutzoukaki was phenomenal - I'm getting this the next time we go back (and there will be a next time).
Dessert: Greek Tiramisu - soaked with sambuca and anise. A great twist on a classic dessert - granted, the taste combination is a bit foreign, but the tiramisu was light yet heartly, with a great mix of bold and delicate flavors. Treat yourself, and try it.
Noise level: Ahhhhh....very quiet background music, and NO tv's as the bar - which is at the very back of the restaurant. A refreshing change from the giant echo boxes that most restaurants seem to be these days.
The final word is: if you want greek homestyle food that does not disappoint, plus great service and friendly staff. Come here. -
Review from Chunnu B.
No, no, do not be deceived by the large number of elderly people here, this is not a bingo hall. I have no idea what that is about but, if you are looking for some better than average Greek food, try this place out.
I've been here a couple times now and think it's decent. Not the best, nothing to boast about, but not bad. The exterior of the restaurant it self reminds me of a small house and is kinda homey inside...a home with a bar in the back. Walls are adorned with plenty of pictures and paintings of all things Greece. Having visited Greece a few years ago (islands included) I would say they did an alright job of trying to recreate the same feel you would experience in an actual restaurant in Greece.
Service was pretty slow the first time I went but was much better tonight (and it was much busier tonight than last time!) Waters were refilled and the waiter actually came back to our table to check up on us (always a plus.)
There were no complaints about food but there were also no "wows" either. I will say their grape leaves with lemon sauce were pretty fan-tas-tic though.
Athena's, until next time, a 3.5 from me to you. - xoxo -
Review from Josh S.
This place needs to be on 23rd St. I'm pretty sure this place can have better business if it were on 23rd instead of 22nd, where nobody really pay attention to. I live two blocks from this place and walk pass this place everyday so figure I would give it a shot and find out what Greek food is like.
Warning: This place closes on Sunday. Stay home and watch football.
It looks bit shady from outside, but inside is much nicer. I believe this place is a family-owned operation otherwise why would they close the business on Sunday when it's really a golden day? Friendly staff and quick service too. I ordered my entree in my fake Greek accent and the gentleman gave me props for trying - other people might get offended for mocking their language but this place isn't one of them.
The foods were delicious. I had veal plate and my friend ordered a steak. Both were great but my friend's steak was bit salty - she ended up taking half of her foods home. I had to try to Mythos (Greek beer) and it was refreshing too.
If you're into cultural and want to experience some ethnic foods OR just sick and tired of eating subpar 23rd portfolio, please check this place out. It's only a block away from where you're standing and you'll thank me for suggesting this place - it's worth it! -

Late Saturday afternoon--running errands in Pentagon Row, we hit the "nearby restaurants" feature on yelp, and this seemed like a good choice with good reviews. Not at all sure what all the fuss is about...nope, not even a clue.
Do you remember Orleans House (Rosslyn) before the wrecking ball and bulldozers paid it a visit? Similar crowd (think: early bird special--not that there's anything wrong with that). Similar quality food. The saganaki (my favorite, "this-is-what-I-want-to-eat-if-ever-on-death-row," dish) BOMBED. It was breaded (think frozen fish sticks) kasseri cheese (we knew at first bite - only use kefalograviera for this dish PLEASE), lemon only on the side, flavorless and frankly, seemingly right out of package and into the fry pan). The spanikopita --just OK, but probably one of the better dishes we sampled. The 1/2 broiled chicken -- lemony, decent, and lived up to its description of a crispy skin. But the Dolmades-- béchamel sauce? Really?
I can only blame myself. I should have INSISTED we leave after the first three signs of an impending disappointment, rather, disaster. Sign number one: the near empty dining room. Sign number two: when we asked if they had lemonade (Hellenic in the Hamptons makes THE BEST frothy lemonade that is hand-squeezed and mixed with powdered sugar)--the answer--yes, we have PINK lemonade (you know, the powder kind that comes from a can---appetizing). My hopes were really LOW at this point. The third, and most critical sign (at least for me), the bread---stale, cold, sour. Just bad, really. They should have fed the birds with it.
The staff was very attentive though, contrary to other reviews---and very friendly. What do they call that? Compensating? Yup. -

A definite find ;) My boyfriend and I were randomly looking for a place to eat and stumbled onto Athena Pallas. The atmosphere and food reminded me of an old restaurant that used to be in Virginia Square in the 70's and 80's. (actually could have been the same decor) I had the special of the day (Pork Tivala (?)) and grape leaves. They were both excellent and very reminiscent of the foods we ate when I was growing up.
We were there early in the evening and the place was nicely full for that hour. Yet, the wait staff managed to make use feel as though we were the only one's there. The service was top notch! -

One of my favorite restaurants in the area. Truly authentic greek food at its finest. The tzatziki is good enough that you will cry when it's done. The main course is always filling, and I always end up taking extra home. My particular favorite is this lamb casserole with eggplant and feta cheese, served with rice and steamed veggies on the side. Oh tortured baby animal - you gave your life valiantly for such a tasty dish and I make sure I pay appropriate homage to you as I am feasting on you. I never leave without getting the baklava.
A 10+ on the oompa/Zorba scale. -

Classic Greek restaurant with delicious food in a slightly odd location in Crystal City. Just about everything that I've had here is great! The pastitsio has probably been my favorite entree, you've got to try it. The Greek sampler platter is great to get if you're not quite sure what you want, it's got pastitsio, moussaka, dolmades, and a few other classic Greek items. For dessert, the baklava is good, it's almost too sweet, if that's possible.
They have steaks and seafood entrees as well, it's not strictly classic Greek food.
Service has been good most of the time, but service was pretty slow one time.
If you're looking for good classic Greek food, this is definitely the place to go. I don't know of any other restaurant in the DC area quite like here. Crystal City doesn't quite seem like the right kind of environment for Athena Pallas, it would fit in well in Greektown in Baltimore. -

I can't believe that this place is in Crystal City. It's not a chain, the food is good and the prices are reasonable, especially when you consider how large (and delicious) the servings are. I've been to a few other DC-area Greek restaurants, and I think this is the best of the ones I've experienced.
The atmosphere is a little overdone, with urns and goblets, but that's part of the charm.Listed in: Crystal Sh!tty

The food was excellent but the service was absolutely terrible.
I'm a pretty mellow customer. If your business is swamped and the waiter seems a little frazzled, I don't complain...but if business is slow and the waiter just can't be bothered to wait on customers that's another thing entirely.
I was in a group of three people. We ordered and got our food. Then the waiter disappeared. Where he went we don't know. We tried to get some refills for our drinks but were unable to. (Call us crazy but we would have liked beverages with our meals.) Another waiter said he'd get us a refill but he never returned. We ended up drinking the melted ice in our glasses. Waiter resurfaced to give us our check though.
I usually tip generously, but after this meal I left a pretty paltry tip. I wanted to leave something to demonstrate that I did not forget to leave a tip but that it was small because the service was absymal. The waiter picked up the tip in front of us, gave me a look and made a little sound. It was like he was commenting "Is this all you're leaving as a tip?"
I will never go back there again. -

A great family restaurant with authentic and fresh Greek dishes. This is a great place to eat healthfully as the menu has many options that won't ruin your diet. While the "Greek classics" dishes are more than acceptable, the meat and fish options provide excellent value. The roast spring lamb should come with a warning: you will become addicted. Be sure to order a Greek salad (and ask for anchovies!). You'll enjoy generous heapings of feta and a dressing that's almost as addictive as the lamb.
In warm weather, the outdoor patio will almost make you feel like you're sitting by a Greek beach resort, until you see Crystal City rising on the horizon. The house wine is a decent value.
Once you try this restaurant, I guarantee you will come back for consistently satisfying food that won't break the bank - the kind of food mom would make, if only your mother was a very skilled Greek chef. -
Review from Greg G.

I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place yet...a friend took me here for the first time a few years back, and I've been returning on a regular basis ever since, most recently last weekend.
If you think Greek and immediately think of a gyro or something like that, this is not your place. If you think all places need to be fancy and are looking for an "experience", this is not your place. But if you like traditional Greek food served in a low-key, affordable, family-run setting, this is your place.
First of all, it's amazing to find a place like this in Crystal City, which is normally a wasteland of decent eating places. But Athena Pallas is in a strange location behind the 23rd street strip, and even has a nice little parking lot. The staff appears to be mostly family, and is attentive, but not overly so.
Foodwise, the Greek Salad is fantastic, and the Roast Lamb (which they only have on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday), is simply amazing. There are plenty of other options on the menu too, which have surprised me constantly with how good they are for the price.
Another great thing about this place is their bar - the carafe of house wine is cheap and decent, which is great if you go with some friends. Plenty of simple yet delicious desserts as well.
Overall, I can't think of a negative thing to say about Athena Pallas. If you're looking for just a place to go eat with friends that has great food at decent prices, look no further! -

Every time we are in the DC area we make time to eat here. The food is good basic Greek food, but when I go to a Greek place I'm looking for Good Greek food, not a cheese burger or linguine! Along with Greek food I'm looking for REAL Greek wait staff , and once again I'm not let down here. This is a family run place and the wait stuff is a bit older then most of the hip young places around town, I LOVE the staff here. Rude never Greek YES, as it should be. The food is as good as any I have eaten and I have eaten Greek all over this country and Canada! The room is like a Greek family's basement in Detroit where I found Greek food for the 1st time as a young man. The Greek I learned to love was made by old Greek grandmothers dressed in black. The food was the best and Grandma many have seemed a bit rude but was always GREEK!
Remember to eat well and live well and please no chains! -

The food and atmosphere is excellent; especially their porch. I have been twice now and loved what I ordered except their tiramisu (too much cream cheese).
I don't remember the service from the first time I visited, but this time we were ignored for a huge chunk of time between when our food came and when we wanted to order dessert so it really took away from the experience. That is why I just say A-OK for the rating.
We will be back though for the delicious food selection and wine. I just hope the service is more attentive in the future. -
Review from Jamie M.
I'm not a huge fan of Greek food, but my boyfriend is Greek so I'm trying. We used to come here quite a bit for lunch when we worked in the area. I usually got a gyro and the guys would order from all different areas of the menu. Everything is always fresh and perfectly cooked. This is definitely one of the top choices for retirement luncheons in their office.
My favorite part is that it really feels like a family restaurant, everyone is super friendly and chatty...and if you don't love Greek food, they do have steak, chicken, and a cheeseburger on their menu. -
Review from Anne J.
They're not kidding about tons of free parking! Atmosphere is fine, nice pictures of Greece but otherwise unremarkable. The salad was OK - good dressing, so-so lettuce etc; the stuffed mushrooms were delicious; the tilapia was nicely done in lemon butter, flaky and tasty; but the Tiramisouzo earns them 4 starts instead of 3. The baklava was also fantastic (went with my parents and we got both desserts to share), but the Tiramisouzo was creative and different - yum! If you don't like anise, don't get it, but I really liked it. I would definitely go back here - didn't get to taste their tzatziki.

Turns out that Greek beer is quite good (even in green bottles). Not too much to look at on the inside (I do like the green awning over the bar) but the food here is excellent. The calamari is average but the the grilled octopus is outstanding. I also tried lamb in two preparations and it was delicious. Our waiter was classic Greek, with some improvement he could almost be Italian ;) -- Good service, good food and the price is not too bad.

This place is mediocre at best. We were a group of 6 so we sampled a lot of their dishes from the grape leaves to the greek combination (an entree of several small portions traditional dishes like moussaka and spanakopita) to the roast spring lamb. We had a few desserts too. Nothing really exciting or memorable. I am a beginner at Greek food so I may not know what I'm talking about but I was with several Greek food fans. The group consensus was it was a disappointing experience. If you want to try this place out, I recommend going to the lunch menu because it's cheaper.

If you leave here hungry, it's your own fault. They make sure you will be stuffed if you finish your plate. I ordered the sampler plate with 5 different dishes plus 2 vegetables and rice. I almost couldn't eat it all. The food is tasty too.The feeling is like you are family, which is important. They want you to enjoy the food and your experience. I will definitely be back.

Avoid Athena Pallas at all costs. A meal here is a disappointing, unappetizing experience. The food is extremely lacking in soul/flavor/caring. My chicken souvlaki was overcooked and the side of rice was lukewarm and mushy. I asked to sub. a small Greek salad for the "seasonal vegetables" and received iceberg doused in bottled salad dressing, topped with a red onion ring and a couple scrawny looking black olives. No feta cheese in sight. No wonder this place was empty.
But the food was not the worst of it. This place is a health hazard. The water coming out of the ladies' bathroom sink is ABSOLUTELY SCALDING. I burned the crap out of my hand just by turning on the water, and when I told the waitress, she proceeded to blame me and claim the "health department" required them to have burning hot water. Right. I reported them to the health department this evening*. I noticed they had quite a few reported health violations, as well: http://www.healthspace...
Crappy food, indifferent service, and skin blisters: not an experience to repeat. Not surprisingly, it's in Virginia.
*Update: the VA Health Dept. paid a visit to Athena Pallas today in response to my complaint. The investigator told me that the water coming out of the bathroom faucet registered at 187F. In other words, hot enough to sanitize dishes without needing chemicals, and hot enough to burn skin. Not surprisingly, the proprietor argued with the inspector as well and continued to blame the customer. Unfortunately, the Health Department's hands are tied because there is a minimum but NOT a maximum water temperature regulation for restaurants. Go figure. She issued a "strong recommendation" that the restaurant regulate its water temp.
Fortunately, patrons have the power of the purse, regardless of the legalese. -

I love this place with all my heart. Once I ate here 3 days in a row because it was just so delicious! I HIGHLY reccomend the combination plate. Their pastitsio is something I crave so much when I go back home to California. I used to come every July and eat here. So delicious. If I could chose, their food would be my last meal. This place got my dad literally hooked on pickled beets - he used to eat them like a crack addict snorts - he couldn't get enough.

This is a great retreat for some home cooked food. The meals here have a feel to them like you ordered them from a mom in Greece. No frills here but good food with nice flavors. The Greek platter is a great way to taste a little of everything they have & priced under $15 it is a steal. The portions are enough for 2 meals. Nice outdoor patio & friendly staff.

I agree with Jason. Service was unfriendly and very slow. I ordered chicken kabob over rice for 13.95...took around 25 minutes...was one skewer with large chunks of overcooked breast meat...dry and lacked flavor,..slight oregano. Rice pilaf okay. Green beans seemed like out of can. Cooked carrots were tasty. Perhaps, some of the other dishes are better. I do believe my kabob was cooked to order, too bad it was overcooked! Staff was friendly with older folks that streamed in and appeared to be regulars. Atmosphere-diner style.
