There are really not enough nice things I can say about Atelier Yarns.  I came in looking to learn how to knit about two weeks ago and since then have learned so much about the world of knitting.

I unfortunately couldn't take the group lessons due to my schedule, but instead took two private lessons with the store manager, Linda.  She is awesome, hands down.  Patient and very clear with her instruction.  She's taught me the basics and provided some tips and tricks as well.

I think what I like most about Atelier is the friendly vibe you get from everyone in the store.  I've been in a couple of times now (yes, I might be addicted) and each time someone is there to ask if you need help and answer your questions.  It's also nice to see the other customers interact and provide advice.   I mean, how can you not smile when folks get excited sharing their hobby?

To all the negative reviews, I'm pretty sure a lot of the employees (at least the ones I've spoken with) are on the newer side, so I would give Atelier another shot.

I love this place! Love, love, love! A great little yarn shop! And the women who own the place / work there are a-maaa-zing. I've never taken a class here, but it's where I learned to knit. Much better than ImagiKnit. The people there aren't super nice, not too interested in helping me out, and are clearly just doing a job. Not the case here!

Decided to take a star off because of their obnoxious attempts to upsell everything.   Walking in to purchase a $17 item guarantees they'll try to sell you a $170 item.  Every time without fail.

Sometimes you got to see for yourself!

I like many people take to heart people's reviews on things and I must say at first I was hesitant to come to this shop but now that I have several times I totally feel the need to speak up!

I have never had a bad experience at Atelier! If you are a lover of knitting or crochet this shop has a huge selection that is sure to please you.

The staff is very friendly and are eager to help you should you have a problem or question. I'm so lucky to have this LYS nearby!

Just not sure why this place has such good reviews. I only end up here because I find myself waiting for the bus at this corner now and then.

There is a decent selection I guess... but somehow never what I am looking for. And the place is expensive and I have never seen a sale. I have never bought anything here and for someone with over 500 skeins of yarn in her stash that is an amazing statement.

The folks that work here have never been very nice. Seem likely just to site behind the register and get annoyed when you are not buying anything.

The ANTI- San Francisco Experience, Just Awful.

I don't like blowing people up, writing bad reviews, I don't even know about the product in this case, but here's my story.

I have a sweater my Grandmother made in 1974. I Stand outside at the bus stop of this shop a few days a week- the sweater is my favorite all time piece of clothing, and I wear it so much, it's starting to come apart. There was a knitting class going on inside, and I thought it would be a great opportunity to ask about getting it fixed.  When I approached this class, hoping to get a referral, or at least some participants interested in a really cool vintage hand-made heirloom, I couldn't have gotten a colder reception. The teacher/owner of the shop looked at me through the locked door like I was a thief, waving me off saying, "we don't do repairs here!, take it to a dry cleaner."  I'm thinking, a yarn shop with 7 ladies knitting in it , and this uppity PAc Hts Barbi doll want's to send me to a dry cleaner? Lame.

I too am  a teacher, and I don't like having my class interrupted, but I work in a community center, and try to do my best to help people out, no matter how clueless or rude they are. It gives me the opportunity to teach the children manners and how to be a good citizen.

I understand she was giving a class, and I was interrupting, but it's not like I was asking for change or directions. It seems to me like it would be a great opportunity for knitters to share some information about their craft. I was so put off by this woman, I asked around, and found out more than a few folks I know felt the same way about this spot for different reasons. One young lady I teach with (she occasionally teaches knitting where I work) told me the yarn is way overpriced, and she received the same snobbish Pacific Heights attitude I did, and it left a bad taste in her mouth. She said something funny like, with that type of customer service, I'll take my chances on line. Can a lil' yarn shop in our fair city afford losing customers like that?

The only reason I wrote this review is because yesterday, I was wearing the sweater, and this older woman who comes to the center where I work was wearing a beautiful sweater that she made. She admired my sweater, and we started talking about it, she told me NEVER to take a sweater like this to a dry cleaner for a repair, she recommended a shop that has a person who does repairs regularly- EXACTLY WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR

When I brought up my experience at Atelier, she said-
    "That place is AWFUL"
So if I think it's weak,
a 20's something club kid thinks it's weak,
and a Grandma in her 70's thinks it's weak,
    guess what?

So I guess what it comes down to is these people want to pick their customers. Good for them. I have a feeling if I was tall, dark and handsome, driving a nice car instead of waiting for the bus, I would have been invited in for tea and stitch and bitch.
All i got was the bitch.

I want to give Atelier Yarns a good review because I came back here over and over again after my first visit last year. The location is good, and they have tons of yarns to choose from, reasonable prices. I also like the little sale area they have by the counter where I found some 100% Noil Silk yarns for $4/skeins. I ended up buying what they had left, a total of 8 skeins, different shades of brown/gray.

Why ONLY 2 stars you ask? I had a very bad experience here a few months ago and have not gone back ever since.  I came in and greeted one of the staff, she stared at me and walked back behind the counter without saying a word. A few minutes later, the same saleslady who ignored me started yelling at one of the other worker saying she should not have taken her break without her permission. She sounded so mean and her yelling made me feel really uncomfortable along with the other customers in the store. I just wanted to get out of there quick so paid and left.  As I was paying, the mean saleslady did not say a thing, not even, "did you find everything okay," or "thank you."  Gosh, I thought knitters are suppose to be really nice and helpful.

I would change my review to 5-stars if I don't ever have to deal with the mean lady again :-)!

I would really like to say good things about this shop, but I can't help but feel like the unwanted customer in this shop. Maybe it's because I'm hood, or maybe because I have a little too urban of a vibe therefore I am an undesirable element, but  I got NO love from the staff at the store. I felt like I was being watched because I was going to thug something from the store. Come on now. You can do so much better.

Until then, I'm off to friendlier stores where they don't have to keep an eye on the hoodrat. Nice yarn though. Hope you have better luck than I.

*Upon reading the last few of my own reviews, I've decided to take it down a notch. Leggy Laura had a good point- what happens when my Grandma finds my Yelp profile? I don't want any more 'splaining to do than already necessary. So I'm writing this totally unsexy review to remind you all how pure and virtuous I am. No references to unadulterated lust, no sexual innuendos, and certainly no mention of engorged body parts- blue, waxed, or otherwise.*

Knitting. The word itself conjurs up images of Amish lasses, sitting by the fireplace, knitting big bulky, unattractive and very unsexy sweaters. How wholesome. Just like me.

Atelier has big and bulky yarn, however it is quite attractive and may not be the best choice for an unsexy sweater. Plus it's super soft and you know what that leads to- that's right!! groping. The wide variety of colors and textures is sure to create a visually stunning piece of art which- you got it again! Leads to promiscuity of the mind thus leading to promiscuity of the body.

There you have it. Atelier Yarns is not to be trusted with your virtuosity. Should you choose to seduce or skank, then by all means, Atelier Yarns should be your sin of choosing.

I am not a fan of Atelier. I know that they can't help some things like how small it is, but there are a couple of things that they can take care of. It seems that every time that I have gone in there the cashier talks to me as if I have never knitted in my life. The last time I went there I specifically asked for stitch markers with slits. I had a specific reason for wanting these so when I asked I was surprised when the cashier told me "You don't want those they'll fall off, You want the closed ones." I don't like it when people assume that they know what I want. So I tried to nicely tell her that I in fact was looking for the slitted ones. She proceeded to say "Well, you are going to have a hard time with those. You really should be the closed markers." My goodness! Luckily by this time I had found what I was looking for.

As bad as my review is I can't really give them one star. Atelier does carry a good selection of knitting bags and accessory holders. They also offer a good variety of classes. So if you can stand the attitude then this might be your kind of place. But I have a feeling that a lot of people are going to want to shop around.

Grace, bless you.  One of the nicest ladies on earth.  My grandma taught me to knit when I was eight.  Grace taught me all the hard stuff (cables, socks, circular knitting, continental style, fair isle, short rows, etc.) in her knitting workshops many years later.  It's been my favorite shop for nearly a decade.

It's a teeny shop with not the largest selection but lots of quality stuff.  Sure, lots of other shops have opened in SF since the knitting craze began.  But Atelier has won my heart.  The samples in the store inspire.  They are knit so tidy and perfect you just want to make them all.  I highly recommend the workshops.  Once my carpal tunnel calms down I may just have to sign up for one.  I miss knitting!

This shop is relatively close to where I live so I stopped by here recently to pick up yarn for a last minute gift.  I think the women here snapped at me about 10 times in the half hour I was in the store.  It was so bad that one of the girls actually half apologized when I left and said something about having a bad day.

I'd go back because of the proximity to my work/house and the selection of yarn (well selected but pricey), but I really prefer the staff at Imagiknit.

I'm not sure what people are complaining about. I just want to debunk some rumors I've seen from other Atalier Yarns reviews.

First of all, all yarns are clearly priced. You have to look on the shelf tag. Maybe this wasn't the case when those other reviews were written, but I assure you that there's no price guessing now. The only things that are unmarked are the needles, but you can always just ask.

Second, the lady who runs the store seems very nice. I went into the store for the first time last week and while I was browsing, I overheard the shop owner ringing up some customers. The customer was saying sadly how she had accidentally just left her knitting project on the airplane. The shop owner empathized by giving the lady a free pair of needles. That's the kind of personalized customer service that you can't get at a big retail chain. When it was my turn to be helped, I showed the shop owner and her assistant a knitting pattern I wanted to work on. They both went out of their way to show me their selection of yarn that would work for my project.

Definitely stop in and check this place out!

My mom and I were sitting around at 3:30 pm on New Years' Eve, talking about knitting.  We decided to look here on Yelp for a yarn shop to buy me some knitting supplies.  We checked and other places were already closed, so we decided to check out Atelier Yarns for the first time.  Jamie and Susan were working with other customers but immediately made us feel welcome.  An hour or more later, and armed with several new toys for me to experiment with, we were very happy customers!  Susan and Jamie treated us like valued customers -- and did I mention that this was now about 5 pm on New Years' Eve, just before closing time?

I will definitely be back.  Also, FYI, to those who complained that yarns were not clearly marked, I have to disagree -- I found absolutely every yarn priced.

I must've gone in on an off day or something. Because I wasn't all that impressed. Sure there was a nice selection of higher end yarn and some nice needles but it didn't really make up for the fact that I was pretty much ignored when I walked in and still ignored when I checked out the enitre store, from front to back and then out the door. Not a peep was said to me.  Do you want to know why? Everyone (1 person who was restocking or moving a bunch of yarn, another person who may have worked there but who clearly off the clock and then another person who was a friend) was busy chatting each other up. I heard all about their dinner plans for their birthday and how they didn't want to make it such a big deal or go out too late because of the baby. Or how the new yarn needs to be knit with a larger gauge needle. Or where they might want to go on vacation.

I wasn't planning on buying anything when I walked in. This was purely an exploratory trip. I wanted to just see what they had, to see if I should keep this place in mind for any other projects that I might want to do in the future. Yeah. I probably won't go here more than once a year. Then why the 3 stars and not lower? They do really have a cute little shop with a decent assortment. 3 stars is just average, I think. I'm not mean just honest.

I love this store and the people who work there!

Great selection of yarn and accessories and outstanding customer service! I just finished their beginning knitting class, and the instructor, Susan, is wonderful. She is joyful, funny, and incredibly experienced and helpful. As a new knitter, I'm not sure how most stores work, but every person working there when I've gone in has been incredibly obliging to help me with my mistakes.

This is not the closest knitting store to me, but I've been to a few others, and this one is by far my favorite.

Atelier has made a loyal customer out of me!

One of best things about independent yarn shops is the expertise of those who work there. Atelier is one of those shops for me. If I have questions they almost always not only have an answer, but they go above and beyond to help me out. Recently I went in to pick up some super bulky yarn for a new cat beanie pattern I found online... the pattern asked for circular needles that I thought were too small for the yarn. The gal helped me figure out how to amend my pattern and find needles that were appropriate for the yarn. Amazing.

The shop is conveniently located by my bus stop, so it's always nice to hop in when I have time to kill. They have an ample selection of yarns, and you can find some decently priced skeins, but like any indie yarn shop, it can get pricey, but the customer service and location work for me.

I know Atelier has gotten a bad rap in the past for snooty sales staff and I just don't get that--in fact they are so helpful particularly for newbie knitters that I was amazed. I went in the other day to buy a set of needles and right there next to the cash register, there was a woman just sitting and knitting next to the sales associate who offered advice between ringing up sales. They also offer an early morning help group, where people come in with problems.  I'm constantly amazed by their graciousness with customers from knitter grrls to little ladies trying to knit something for their latest grandchild.

The only thing that I would want from them is to be a bit bigger.

I am the type that tries, in print anyway, to keep negative opinions to myself.  But in my wrap up of my yarn store reviews in the Bay Area, I have to include Atelier, and I don't have much good to say about them.  How hard is it to have prices on things?  From food to cars to greeting cards, if you want to buy just about anything, there is a price on it.   Is buying a pricing gun too expensive?  Is the staff too lazy?  Do they do it to change the prices at will?  I just don't get it.   I have never gotten an answer about it from them, and I am stumped - it's hard to plan a large project without knowing the price per ball.

And the staff...wow, super snobby.  Not the type of place for a creative type to hang out.  I felt like I was being watched constantly.  And when I asked how much point protectors were, and opted not to buy them for the whopping price of $7 (they are usually $2 or so!) the girl actually smirked at me.

Atelier, I spend more money on yarn than I care to think of or that you might expect by looking at me,   Be nice to your fellow knitters!

The best thing about this store is probably the location. It's within walking distance of where I live. So if you live nearby and need yarn fast, this is the store for you. Other than that, it's not really worth it. The yarn/supplies prices are really high. Yarns are selling for at least $2-$7/ball more than other stores or online prices, but I suppose that's what you get for a store in the heart of SF. The service is spotty...you will be taking your chances on each visit. Sometimes you will get a nice, helpful woman, sometimes you will be totally ignored, and sometimes you will get the super bitch.

Oh, and did I mention, no prices posted anywhere? It's almost as if if you need to be asking about the price, then you're not worth the yarn. Be prepared for major sticker shock when your total is tallied up!

I have been in here several times because it's a very convenient location to my work. Unfortunately, that usually means I'm stopping by on my lunch hour to quickly take care of a knit/crochet need.  Previously, I have been unimpressed with the service, but the yarn selection is decent.

However, I went in yesterday during lunch, and it was ridiculous.  I was the only person in there aside from 2 women talking to the clerk at the counter.  I pick out my yarn after about 10 minutes, overhearing the discussion about needle types and classes going on at the counter, and go stand in line behind the women.  As I'm standing there, listening to one woman ask the other for the millionth time which type of needles she wants, the clerk is, I kid you not, hand-calculating their purchase, with paper, pen, and a calculator.  What century are we in??  Then the woman changes her mind as to what needles she wants, so the clerk goes about "crediting" her total with the old needles and adding the new ones.  Then the clerk asks what time they want to do their class, which starts another whole wishy-washy round of discussion.  And the woman wants to pay by check - more time suck.  I'm meanwhile standing right behind them, being ignored and wondering how long this will take.

This whole time, I have never been acknowledged once!!  If the clerk had just  offered to ring me up while the ladies were deciding, or at the very least said something like "I'll be right with you", maybe then I wouldn't be writing this review now.

I didn't have another 15 minutes to wait, so I tossed the yarn back on the shelf and left.  That's a sale lost, and a completely unsatisfied customer walking around, NOT recommending this store to friends.  I won't be coming back.

I adore this warm, cheery little store.  The walls are lined, floor to ceiling, with beautiful, colorful, high-quality yarn.  The staff is interested in helping and yet respectful if they sense you would like to be left alone to browse and touch the yarn.

I signed up for a knitting class and Grace spent time going from pupil to pupil, assisting each with equal amounts of skill, patience and good cheer.  Seriously, I don't know how she does it -- her well of patience is infinite.

They stock a lot of higher end yarns that I haven't seen in other shops in the area and the prices reflect that.  The needles and notions are the same price they are everywhere.  Unfortunately, the one time I went there, the woman behind the counter was having some sort of personal crisis and couldn't be bothered to help the customers.  It took 20 minutes to buy a set of needles (which I desperately needed or else I would have just left).

They have a great selection of gorgeous yarn and it's fun to browse, provided you don't have questions or need any assistance of any kind.

I thought it was me and I could not understand why the owner was so rude. But I see that others have had similar experiences.

I visit Sf several times a year and waiting for #24 bus I have been drawn into the store several times. I have been knitting for 45 years and despite snide remarks from the owner, I am a very capable, even talented knitter. But somehow I have yet to grasp the store rules.  You can't buy yarn without buying a pattern, you can't buy a pattern without buying the yarn, you can't buy the pattern without taking classes (difficult for me since I live in Ohio) and you can't buy the yarn, pattern and needles because despite 45 years of knitting, I seemingly have not met the owner's standard.  Go figure. I guess they would rather hurl insults to a quiet, well mannered, pleasant potential customer than make a sale.  On the other hand, what is wrong with me.  I must be a masochist to silently put up with such behavior.

I had hoped during my April trip to be able to purchase a pattern and yarn but alas the employee had to get her boss's permission.  I am still waiting on the call back (too late - I am back in Ohio)  . I just don't get it.  Yarn shops in Ohio are friendly places.  The yarn shop in the Castro is as well, but Atelier Yarns is HOSTILE!!!!!

On the bright side they apparently hate all or at least most of us, so take your business elsewhere unless you like abuse!

I just finished their beginning knit class. Fun and friendly atmosphere. I can't believe I really made a hat in just 4 short classes. Great instructor who was patient and fun. I'm sure there are cheaper places out there with more selection. But it is what it is. I recommend it for the beginning class-super fun.

I only go to Atelier if I happen to be in the neighborhood and I feel like looking at yarn.  I'm a sock knitter and their selection of yarns falls short of what I think should be in a yarn store.  We fiber people want lots of yummy yarn with texture, great colors and staff members who are willing to help you.  So Atelier is so so for us sock fanatics.  However, if you are looking for yarn to knit scarves and sweaters with, it's fine.  There is one really nice person who works there - the rest are kind of just ahem...  I don't know her name, but she knit this great top down sweater in a grey Aurora 8 yarn and gave me the pattern since I bought yarn and needles.  Otherwise, the other folk who work there seem like they're a bit bored or overwhelmed.  I would go back to Atelier but only if I was in dire need of something.

Patient, yes.  Not helpful when you are no longer a student.  I tried to buy yarn 2 weeks after taking a class and they looked at me like I was asking her to move mountains.

Stupidly priced for a place that gets little foot traffic.

Not open on sundays.  Are you kidding me??  Isnt this the peak day to purchase things overpriced?

I've taken several classes and attended Wendays night workshop as a drop in.   Grace is the best and most patient teacher. I 've met some nice fellow students in class as well. Definitely my favorite sf yarn shop.

I can't pinpoint it, but I've never felt that welcome here, certainly not as welcome as Imagiknit.  I recently went back to see if I had imagined my discomfort but there it was again.  Their selection is comparable to other yarn stores but they didn't have as much of the lower-end yarns except for some acrylics which I could have gotten cheaper at a JoAnn Fabrics or the like.

I'm in a state of shock about this shop. Why is this place still in business? It looks cute on the outside...inside is this knit bitch with a belly top named Holly. Do not go there if you are  a newbie knitter. You willl pay 10$ for any yarn and 10$ for needles. You also will be treated like you are a raving idiot.

Don't waste your MONEY or time. Beautiful yarns..overpriced and staff that will ignore you! YUCK. Well now that I have decided against spending $300 to crochet a beautiful, scratchy mohaired scarf for you...let me go to Joanne's! They are happy to help and I found a similar yarn for $10. Thanks for ignoring me!
