Review from Courtney P.
New York, NY
If I were a guy (I'm not) I would shop here. It is a men's store that is a little bit dark, a little bit Matrix, a little bit rocker, and a whole lotta ridiculously cool. They know their look, their demographic, their aesthetic. Carol Christian Poell. YSL. Dior. Damir Doma. Yohji Yamamoto. Shaun Leane. Boris Bidjan Saberi. The stuff you can't find anywhere else you can find here. This place is cool. The service is great. Same day messenger service... within an hour? What?! Yeah, you'll pay for all of this, but if you are looking for that one piece, this is probably a good place to start. If not to buy... then at least for inspiration.

I'm actually surprised that I never wrote a review for Atelier. Its actually been awhile since I've been here, although I do recall that one day that I did browse the store. Much smaller than I thought it would be, but still exciting to go through all the labels. Its also quite exciting to go through a full rack of Undercover and Number (N)ine stuff. I however did have that experience at Jeffrey's...
Perhaps what also eased me was the rack of Rick Owens. Haven't seen that much anywhere yet. That was nice. I do love Rick Owens.
To put it simply for those who can't realize it, for some odd reason, Atelier likes to buy nothing but black. Its far from 'gothic,' but nearing a monochromatic lifestyle. Black and white. The perfect store for Ann Demeulemeester of course.
Bottom line, if you have the admiration for these labels, its a great chance to get up close and personal with them. And if you have the $700 to blow on a (N)N top, go right ahead. -

Not much more I can add given the already full bodied reviews, but yeah I love the place too. Truly an aspirational store. And it's ok - I don't hate on the 60 year old guy I always see shopping here. Maybe at 60 I'll be able to fill my wardrobe with this stuff too.
They are more than happy to let you come in and try stuff on, which I've been doing a few times a season for years now. At this point they know I'm coming in just to say hi, catch up, trade stories about what's hot this season, try something on and move on... and a few days later I build up the antibody for the Saberi jacket I've been infected by.
The style has been around for really a while now, they keep refining it and even though I'd like to think I can do it on my own, I get a lot of direction from Atelier.
And damn, clothes are crazy expensive everywhere you damn go. Here they just don;t have any less expensive alternatives, so it all just seems expensive, which is actually great! Their store ISN'T more expensive than anywhere else in NYC. Go to Europe and slink it back thru customs if you want a break -

In a purely aesthetic judgment (prices aside), this store is hands down one of my favorite. With such a limited palette -- blacks, greys, and dark earth tones -- texture and cut become such defining characteristics, and each garment offers something new.
Rarely am I "wow" over men's clothing, but here, I feel like there's hope for our sex -- proof that there are in fact designers out there striving to re-invent the male silhouette.
And just to agree with Peter N, the sales-people are uncannily friendly and helpful (and attractive.. *ahem*). Never before have I walked away grinning even in the face of my own sartorial/financial inadequacy. Thanks guys! -

Yes it's dark. Yes it's austere, solemn, beautifully tailored and not at all for everyone. Which is what sets its apart. Its unique.
It's for the artist, the individual, the aesthete, the dandy and the sophisticated. All the avant lines are here and if you know anything about Belgian or Japanese design, you know its gonna be a restricted color palette. You want fuschia? Go to Versace. Wild pastel prints? Sorry, dude- try Paul Smith.
As for the pricing,I have found it in line with other retailers, but the buying here is vastly superior. The owners are not just peddling black clothers for the gallery set- They are creating an environment , cultivating a mood. Their clothes are sold next to carefully chosen antique books, unusual jewelry and amazing accessories.
Its true that if you love the eastern european/wiemar type you will freak out over everything in here. Its always been a great experience chatting with the owners, but then again, I'm into their scene, so its a naturally happy affair.
Point well taken about the focus here from Dunzo S, but in a world of vintage regurgitation, commercially smart fashion and a scary increase of "celebrity" driven clothing lines,I'm more than happy to rage against the banal in my trenches and black leather.....

Ok, I actually ended up buying that coat. Never mind...
Since my last review Atelier has changed. They "grew up" as Jo Jo says.
From being a semi-hidden gem in Crosby Street, with four racks of clothes and two curtains-as-dressing-rooms, the store has now evolved into a huge open space in West Village with more than 12 racks of pitch black designer coolness, boots and accessories, awesome fur lined dressing rooms with huge doors and giant mirrors.
I might not be their best customer (stores like this usually survive due to a few handfuls of very VERY dedicated customers), but I have been buying stuff here since 2007 and believe it or not: it's all been worth it so far. However, due to shifts in priorities and lower overall income, my budget, unfortunately, does not allow me to shop here at the moment.
I still highly recommend this place if you have the right credit card and you're willing to indulge in a not so mainstream kind of style.
A final disclaimer (and sorry for my moralizing language):
Don't take it too seriously. Remember: these are the coolest fashion brands in the world and you can buy the pieces necessary to create an awesome style, but there is more to life than fashion. Please: remember to actually BE someone worth talking to.

In reply to Dunzo S.: I totally see where you're coming from, but I think it really depends on who's in the store on the given day. Some days it's the friendly ones. Sometimes it's too serious.Listed in: Born to Shop

Review from Peter N.
New York, NY
One of my favorite menswear stores in the WORLD.
Ever since I moved here the owners and workers, Karlo, Jo Jo, Satoru, have all been the most down to earth friendly people I've ever encountered at a boutique of this nature.
The aesthetic is dark. It's too easy to call it gothic. Most people probably haven't heard of 90% of the brands they stock, and they enjoy that. But the best thing is, they will tell you what makes the designer/clothes special. As a former design student, they really elevated my level of knowledge in terms of fashion, construction and personal taste. -

One of the only places in the US I've been to that stocks Undercover, Number (N)ine, Ann D., and Rick Owens together in the same spot. I never saw any pieces from any of the labels mentioned above before in person, so coming in here was definitely a treat. All the colors are dark, and everything is expensive. For me, this was just exciting to see the fashion forward vision of the aforementioned designers, because God knows I can't afford $1200 boots.

For the look they specialize in nothing comes close to Atelier. They have designers you won't find anywhere else in the US. They carried Rick Owens before Rick became Rick. My new favorites from them are MA+ and Boris Bijan. They also have an amazing footwear collection.
On top of the selection, the service is absolutely amazing. -

This store is absolutely amazing!! I am more than willing to trek 40 minutes to this store...the first thing people always notice here is the price, 600 dollars for a vest is not in most peoples budgets.
If you're going to go to this store, please don't complain about the price, thats not what its about, you don't have to buy anything if you can't afford it, but it is great to just look and browse around...
The clothes are monochrome, black/whites mostly, staff is very friendly, the layout of the store and the vibe it creates surpasses most stores i've been to, and definitely one of the best boutiques in the city.
The staff will help if you need help rather than follow you around (they are not rude), i rather have them talk amongst themselves while i browse than to come to me the moment i walk in and pressure me into buying something like many other stores, they are good with their greetings, just catch their eyes when you walk in...
there is a huge 3 sided mirror in the store to check yourself out with whatever apparel you're trying on, it was fairly empty each time i've went, but i've only been there 3 times, the rack isn't just filled with a bunch of black junk, each piece seems to be carefully thought out before being put on sale
i'll admit i can't afford the things here, but it doesn't stop me from dreaming
i'd like to think that if Kate Lanphear were a man, this is where she would shop....alot, she does have the androgyny thing going on so perhaps she does shop here
my advice is to ignore the price, and appreciate everything else in the store -

I've only been to Atelier twice but have had a very good experience there each time. Before my first visit, I called to see if they had an Ann Demeulemeester shirt of which Barneys had sold out in my size. They told me it was in stock and I arrived and tried it on. I was pleasantly surprised that Atelier's price was not higher than that of Barneys. I liked the spacious dressing room; my only complaint is that it had no mirrors inside - I had to walk outside of the dressing room to find the mirror. The guys working in the store were friendly and helpful and I made my purchase. The next day, I noticed that there were a few very small holes in the stitching of the underarm. I was nervous that the staff would say that I wore the shirt and caused the damage. I was pleasantly surprised again when they told me it would be no problem to exchange it and brought me the last shirt of that make in my size. I don't go to Atelier frequently because I would have a hard time NOT buying something from their exquisite selection, but as my income grows, hopefully I will be able to shop there more often. Will certainly be back.
