Flynnies you say? Ataraxis is a more than welcomed replacement for the horribleness that was Flynnies. Flynnies was like your grandfathers old basement, now that he's passed on it is time to redecorate and move away from the faux wood paneling, large mouth bass on the wall, and plaid couch. Just let the past go, people.
Ataraxis has done away with the townie-bar interior in favor of a more cozy and mature setting. Along with that, the menu has changed with offerings of variations on American comfort foods. Ataraxis provides the menu and atmosphere conducive to all sorts of gatherings, be it meeting with friends for some pub grub or a nice quiet corner for a first date.
Food menu can be overwhelming with their choices, but my best bet is the cardiac arrest on a plate known as the bacon-wrapped meatloaf. I had this meal with a side of the Mac and Cheese, as well as a 'bucket of stuff' (awesome name!), and it led to a quite comfortable food coma.
Prices are more than fair, staff are wonderful, and ownership is always on hand digging right in with their staff or making themselves available to their customers.
And as for the name, is it really that hard to pronounce? At-ar-ax-is. Woah, that was tough to sound out. Good thing I've been able to sound out syllables since the 2nd grade.

Review from Thomas G.
Salem, MA
For anybody that can remember the horrid assault on taste and good sense that was Flynnies, Ataraxis Tavern is a welcome respite from the bloated, messy, tepid townie fare that once dominated this location.
Gone is the greasy, cramped interior. In its place is a cozy and remarkably intimate setting; the atmosphere more subdued and mature. Likewise the menu is replaced with a more sophisticated, yet approachable, selection of nouveau American comfort food. It's the place of first dates and quiet evenings.
And the food: I have eaten here quite a few times and have yet to be disappointed or even moderately unimpressed. From the can't-miss unctuous goodness of the bacon-wrapped meatloaf to the plentiful bucket of stuff, the portions are filling, the flavors bold and inventive, and the aroma pleasantly lingering in the air long after the meal is gone. -

Review from Joe N.
Marblehead, MA
Just ate there for the first time last night, and it was wonderful. Not only was the food delicious, but the attention to detail was excellent. That is, even the side dishes were given the same attention as the main. The vegetables that accompanied the best steak tips I have ever had, were just as good as the steak tips! The fries that accompanied the wonderful, hand packed, char grilled burger (cooked to perfection) were hot and crispy. The Shrimp Etouphee was amazing. My child ordered Mac and Cheese off the kids menu, and everyone at the table was stealing bites. It was home made and full of flavor. No surprise, we were told everything is home made, by the cook who came out to greet us. The portions were good sized, the prices are extremely fair (especially for Marblehead!)...could very well be the best value in town. There are so many great sounding items on the menu that we can't wait to go back and try them all. This is NOT just bar food. By the way, we loved Flynnies too, but A.T. is not to blame for losing a local favorite. Let's just celebrate the fact a wonderful new tavern took its place! Flynnies would be proud.
