I've known Toshi and other hair stylist for the past 5 years and I am glad to know that Toshi is the owner of this place. I met him when he use to work for Salon in Sunnyvale, CA and since then i always visit him to fix my hair. Toshi is talented in his work and if you have volume of hair and fuzzy like me, I will recommend you all to go see him.

My experience with Phil was very positive. He did my color touch up and I was very pleased with the results. Professional and talented, Phil was also very personable and down to earth. He was also very honest with me when he told me my hair was healthy and didn't need to be trimmed (although he would love the extra business). When the time comes, I'll definitely come back for a cut. Thanks Phil!

Phil was able to save a butchered haircut I got at a salon in the Castro.  He is chill, has nice energy, very very nice and I am going to see him again.  Thank you Phil for your amazing work and energy- greatly appreciated.

This review is long over due.  I've been going to At One Ten for a couple years now.  Back then I lived closer to San Mateo.  At first I wanted to keep Jesse a secret, so that I could always get an appointment.  Well that didn't work, since he's been pretty booked all weekends all summer :)  Now that I moved down to South Bay, that trek to San Mateo on the weekends is certainly worth it!

I never really know how to describe the hair cut I want, and I can't ever seem to find the right picture.  When I show Jesse pictures, he'll explain to me which style will work and how much maintenance or styling it will take.  Many times, I just tell Jesse, do whatever you think will be best, and I have yet to be disappointed!

Jesse is such a sweetheart.  I've run close to half an hour late on a Wednesday evening appointment (due to rain and traffic) and he waited for me and gave me an awesome cut!  When I couldn't get in for a Sunday appointment during regular hours, he took me an hour before opening.   I also like that he will use various hair products and make suggestions, but never pressure me to buy products.  That is just stellar customer service, on top of an awesome hair style!

Got my hair did from my buddy Phil. He actually takes the time to make sure you are satisfied with every aspect and pays attention to detail. I suggest going to him for hair cuts or coloring, he is very good at what he does.

Hes a very chill, nice and down to earth guy. I will be back when i need to get that fresh hair look.

I'm so happy that Jesse is back to here full time now. I've been going to him for twelve years, and he never once disappoint me. He is very friendly, pleasing, artistic and most important of all, professional. I sometime showed him pictures of hair styles; he then told me what fits me regarding my face shape and my hair texture. Sometimes I gave him a free hand, and the results were amazing. I truly trust his professionalism. I highly recommend him,and he can be contact directly by (650) 766-4674. By the way, he also can speak Mandarin fluently since he is from Taiwan. For me, he is not just a hairstylist to me, but also like a good old friend.

    This review is for Mieko.

All I can say is, WOW! THANK YOU!

I seldom write reviews, but Mieko has won me over.

I came in with pictures of hair styles I thought were cool, but essentially asked Mieko to just surprise me with "something fun." Not only did she give me something fun, but she did so by combining a little bit of each of the styles I showed her (you can see Mieko's work in my photo album). Overall, I'd have to say that this is one of the best cuts I've had in the bay area.

Concerns I had BEFORE coming into the salon:
+Language Barrier? -- NO. Mieko was fluent in English!

    Thank you, Mieko!

I actually went there for Aki and just found out that she moved back to Japan already (yeah I know I should read the review before I go but anyways.) I then the first time have Jesse to be my stylist. He's very good, too.

He listened to what I wanted and carefully made my hair. Four stars just because The style is not really what I thought it would turn out, (but, well, that's because I asked him to cut it shorter as well...) but still look very nice on me. I would say there are not many short hair styles that I really like (and yeah, my hair has failed on other stylists many times.), and he did a good job making the right style for me.

I would certainly be back again next time I need a cut!

Came here the other day and a guy named Phil cut my hair, he's the guy with the tattoos. Very nice guy and super friendly.

I usually don't get my haircut at these kind of places so I left it up to Phil to decide what would look best. I was chatting it up with him the entire time and in about half an hour was done cutting and styling my hair.

Very satisfied with the way my hair turned out and would definitely come back.

You know...I really hate hair cuts. It makes me nervous every time I get a hair cut from somebody I've never...well, gotten a hair cut from before. So imagine my frustration when my go-to hair stylist fell off the face of the earth. Can you imagine what was going through my head? Allow me to give you a glimpse.

    "SHIT."

Yeah, that was pretty much it.
But today I think I found my new go-to person.

It was my first time stepping into At One Ten today and so I was a little nervous since I had no idea what to expect. At  One Ten is a little salon located on the quieter side of Downtown San Mateo. The interior is cute with the big mirrors and sophisticated decorations. But enough of that...let's get to the main point shall we?

    I had PHIL.
And he's the main reason why I'm giving 5 stars. 5 STARS MAN. Don't be jealous you're not getting ***** stars.

As the previous Yelper below me said, Phil is cool from top to bottom. His tattoos intimated me a bit in the beginning but after talking to him, I realized that he was the exact opposite. He's really friendly and I could tell that he cared a lot about hair by the way he kept asking me questions about mine (even though I had no clue how to answer him most of the time). Before we started, he asked me how I wanted him to cut it but since I really had no idea or preference, I gave him all the power.

If you want to skip the rest of my review, you can just finish off with this: I LOVE my hair and I HIGHLY recommend Phil. Go 4 it.

But if you would like to continue reading....
The session lasted about 1+hour and throughout the whole time, we made small talk. Every so often, he would ask me how I was doing and whether I liked how he was doing so far.

I get crazy nervous when it gets to my bangs so Phil said we would take it slow. And I had no reason to worry, my bangs came out perfectly the way I wanted them to look.

    So again,
I LOVE my haircut. I LOVED Phil.
And hey, it doesn't hurt that he's a good looking guy so for you girls out there, that's another reason you can go check him, I mean At One Ten Salon, out ;)

I usually come here to pamper myself every so often with the 'Japanese rock" hairstyle look. Although they might be a little pricier, I can guarantee the moment I walk out of the salon, I will not cry.

Aki has done my hair in the past, however she just moved back to Japan. Now, I'm getting my haircut from Keiko?

Again, I come here every 5 months and every experience has been great. Lastly, I wish there were more Japanese hairstylist out in the east/southbay area, just saying.

Its my 3rd trip to AtOneTen and I'm fairly satisfied with the overall service, and cut. The first trip was with Jesse, second was with Aki, and third recent one, I had Jesse cut my hair from medium length, below the shoulders to short (approx. 3 inches shorter).

I called just about 1 hour before closing and they were so kind enough to let me still come in for the haircut. Jesse is really so fun and nice to talk with. I always have a great time with him and he keeps me laughing through the cut! He spent a lot of time asking me questions about my daily hair regimen, which is really nice of a hairdresser. Without pushing products on me, he suggested a few tips on how I can moisturize my hair better and also how to style it. It was a cut and hair lesson in one :)

I was a bit surprised at the price in the end, I was hoping that it would be under $50 total (which includes tip), but the total was $55 and that was without my tip. Granted, Jesse did spend 2 hours on my hair....so it was ok, I guess.

    Service 4.5 stars
Cut 4 stars (I've gotten lots of compliments, thanks Jesse!)
    Price: 3 stars

    Likely to come back again!

    This review is for Jessie...

I had a terrible haircut from XL down the street and let it grow out for about two months before deciding to get it fixed. Jessie listened to what I had to say about how I wanted my hair, made very good suggestions, and left me with a much nicer do than when I went in. He not only gave me a great cut, he also showed me some ways that I can style it myself at home. Definitely a step above and beyond. Great haircut, great service. I'll be back!

Love getting my hair cut by Toshi.

He knows just how my hair works.  I tell him, I don't like to do anything to my hair, not even blow dry on regular days, cuz I just don't have the time, and don't even think about a hairstyle that would require any products... And, unlike other stylists who still go ahead and give you the latest and greatest styles that only look good when you spend 50 minutes doing your hair every day, he actually listens!!!

I leave with a hair cut that looks great styled, or not at all.  Just the way I like it.

I chopped off my hair on Sunday. I had the urge to take it all off, so I did or at least most of it.

I didn't want to go to San Jose, so I decided to find a local salon by my place. I selected one through yelp and based on the reviews and location, I went to At One Ten Salon. I walked in and was assigned to Aki. I didn't quite know what I wanted but I knew I wanted a short cut.

I never wanted to pee in my pants as much as I did during this process, not because I was nervous about cutting my hair short, but Aki just made me nervous. Aki is Japanese and spoke limited english, she did her best to accomodate what I wanted but at the same time she kept on using such words as razor and bubble hair, many many times. Yikes! I was feeling nervous. She was careful at going inch by inch but even then I wasn't sure what was going on.

But slowly, I saw my hair style take shape. Aki was so meticulous about what she was doing. She spent over an 1 hr 30 min on my cut. At the end of loved it. Though I am still getting use to the short cut, I have to give Aki props for making it easier for me to love  a short cut on ME.

I had such high hopes. I guess it was all to good to be true. I neglected to make a hair appointment until late Friday evening for the Saturday wedding...

[long story... I wasn't planning on getting my hair done at all til about mid-week and then had to muster the funds and find a salon open early enough, that was still open and booking appointments, etc. I wish I had just called my usual guy earlier in the week. sigh.]

...and it was relatively cheap. $55 for an updo? Okay. So I go in and tell her I want half up, half down, side part, some 'body' to it and the updo. It's all going o-kay until she takes out the curlers and catches my hair in every one. EVERY one. And it HURT. No apology, but I'm still thinking she's going to comb it out and attack it with the iron. Instead she keeps teasing my hair and starts pinning. I looked like I had alfalfa sprouts coming out of my head. I was so upset because 1. It hurt and looked atrocious, but 2. I was out $65 [yeah, I tipped - idiot] I really didn't even have, and 3. had to instead make do with what time I did have to fix it.

I'm so sorry to give such a harsh review, but I'd really never ever ever ever ever go back.

Plus $1 in quarters for parking.

It's been about three months since my bang trim at this salon, and my bangs are now the length that I had originally wanted them to be. Shortly after my last review, Jesse called and apologized for my dissatisfaction and offered a refund. (I did not take them up on that offer.) But I appreciate their concern for customer satisfaction.

If you've been following my search for a stylist with great layering skills, you will know that it was a difficult search until I went back to my old stylist farther away. But as for layering skills alone, Jesse actually takes the cake around here. (Just be sure to specify the length with a little to spare.)

Came here for a haircut since I didn't want to drive so far to my stylist.

The place is situated right near El Camino and 2nd Street.  My Stylist, Aki, helped me cut my hair.  She was meticulous in asking questions and cutting my hair to my specifications.

I appreciated the fact that she would stop after a while to check up and see that things were how I expected it.

Overall, it was alright, but, I have to say that I do miss my stylist only because whenever I go visit her, I never have to worry about describing my cut.  It's automatic!

It's a good place and if I do need another haircut in San Mateo, I'll definitely revisit.

    Toshi is the man.

Now there are already lots of reviews saying just that, so why another one?

Because Toshi has great chops (pun intended) for cutting white-guy hair as well.
I have what many Asians refer to as "blond hair." Something is lost in translation? And I thought all along I had brown hair.

Anyhow here is airtight, scientific evidence of before Toshi (BT) and after Toshi (AT)

BEFORE (BT, at a stylist north of San Mateo)
gf: "How much did you pay for that haircut?"
    me: "$40"
gf: " WHAT?! You might as well have gone to Supercuts."
    me: "oh."

    AFTER (AT):
gf: "Wow, your hair looks good. Who cut your hair?"
    me: "Toshi"
gf: "Yes. He knows what he's doing."
    me: "oh."

and the funny thing is that the more that I go to him, the better the cuts get. I'm not making this up.

And as an added bonus, the service is great (they actually return calls! promptly! amazing!), he's a real nice guy, and he's also a great listener.

I enjoy getting my hair cut by Toshi.

My second time to have my hair cut here, by Aki and I'm very pleased with how meticulous and precise she was in cutting my hair.  I have very thick and curly hair and she's able to give me a haircut I can manage and maintain w/o too much trinkets.

It's sad that Aki will be leaving soon. Prices for a haircut are a bit steep, but considering I get one every quarter, I guess, it's worth it.

Since I moved to San Mateo, it is a lot of work for me to get up and go to the city and go to see Kelly (Kayo Hair Salon)
but I was surprised there is a nice decent hair salon right on the corner from my apt.
Aki is good, i can speak Japan so it was easier to explain to her what i wanted. EVEN THOUGH she cut a little bit more than I wanted but it is ok! it will grow back, right?
I gave them 4 stars cuz i wish they had a clear price list that shows how much i was going to pay. $55 isn't that bad but Kelly only charge me 35 and give me a nice head massage...
I will go back when i feel lazy but want a hair cut?!

I rarely write about hair salon...But i would make one great exception this time.

I'm not sure if other guy has similar issue like i do..
Being myself, i tend to save some $$ on hair cuts just because there's only so much you can do with your hair.

i moved up to Nor Cal, close to 2 years now.

-Residing in Union City, i have been a frequent patron to local asian hair salon here. Cheap hair cut, but not much of style.. Perhaps it was just my luck, no matter which asian hair salon that i go to.. i always end up getting the same hair style no matter what i tell the hair stylist.

So this time after months.. i mean months of holding back my hair cut, i decided to go somewhere else..

My option are typical - Japan Town in SFO (Expensive yo... not including the commute), or any nearby popular hair salon like Regis (Expensive and same time i had bad experience with a few hair stylist)

So i was driving through downtown San Mateo (closer to work) and i bump into this neat little hair salon tuck in between offices in downtown San Mateo.

-I checked out the Yelp review so i took my chance.

suprised ..suprised... It was an amazing experience. I was pampered and taken care of by Meiko. She was great.. she ask me a few questions on how do i want my hair and so on and so forth... then she with her magic hands...  waaa laaa.... a decent looking hair style .. so i don't look like the other Asian guy that walk right down the street.

I would surely recommend them to everyone and visit them again .. perhaps after 2 months? :)

Believe me guys... it's worth it..

This review is for Aki :)

I used to go to Aki's salon when she works at SF Japan town.  She left the States for a while and I wasn't able to find a better stylish than her.

I am so glad she's back to the States with tendency to improve her skills.  She is very patient, give you professional suggestions and willing to accommodate your requests in many ways.

I have straight hairs and always wanted to try on curly hair looks, so after telling Aki, she use hot iron to curl my hair to try on the look after she did my haircut, and that extra service she did is free.

I love going to this place and Aki is the best!

Just moved to the area and was in serious need of a haircut!  So like any yelpers, I did a search and came across "At One Ten" and hairstylist Toshi.  I was looking for a complete change!  We are talking about drastic measures and BANGS!!!! So, after reading the reviews about how Toshi is very up to date with the latest Japanese hair trends, I decided to take a chance and called the salon for an appointment.  Although I'm not Japanese, I am Asian and I was looking for someone who is good with assn hair types (not necessarily styles but hair types) and since I've always like the Japanese hairstyles I was excited to get the haircut from Toshi.
When I got there, I found that parking was very accessible (just down the block is a public parking lot and some meter parking right in front).  The salon is small but very neat and doesn't feel crammed.
I didn't have to wait at all (unlike all my previous experiences with more expensive salons).  Toshi had just finished with his previous client - ON TIME!  I brought a lot of pictures and magazines to explain to Toshi what I was looking for.  I also asked for his advice on how the particular hairstyle would look on me.  He was honest and told me what would work and what wouldn't.
He gave me a very comfy shampoo (although the towel over the face thing was a little different but at least my face wasn't splashed with water).  While cutting my hair, we had a pleasant conversation.  He took his time with the cut and blow drying and styling.  He even showed me how to curl my hair w/o having to spending too much time.
The end result was an AWESOME haircut!  I loved it.  My boyfriend LOVED it.  I know it's a great haircut when someone I really don't know ask me where I got my haircut!
I highly recommend Toshi and although I don't know how other stylists are but they were all very friendly.

Haircut prices starts at $48 depending on your length ($48, $55, $65).

I was originally going to give this salon zero stars for my japanese straight perm with Aki.  I've been going to Japan Town for 7 years for the straight perm and have always come out with smooth, shiny, straight hair.  However, I decided to try this salon because it was closer to me than SF is.  I came out with the opposite.  Fried, dried, and frizzy hair with curls underneath!  I look like a POODLE!!!!  The reason why I'm giving this place 4 stars is because after the results of my hair, I decided to talk to Toshi, who is the owner of the salon.  It is true what they say in the reviews.  Toshi truly cares about his customers and his salon, which is what I truly admire.  He took the time to listen to me while I explained what had happened, and he decided to compensate me for what had happened.  Toshi is truly a man of integrity and demonstrates great customer service.  Toshi, thank you.  I may have been disappointed with my hair and will continue to look like a frizz ball for the next 6 months, but talking to you made me feel so much better.  If I come back, it will definitely be to see Toshi.  Thank you!

I almost don't want to update my review because I want to keep Jesse a secret! Sometimes a girl needs a little "pick me up" and that's exactly what Jesse does! I leave the salon looking and feeling great! Jesse - you rock!

I have lived in San Mateo for over 2 years now and have been unhappy with every haircut - finally I found Jesse at 110.  He is quick, stylish, easy to talk to and affordable - all the qualities I have been looking for.  2 thumbs up from  me!

I made an appointment to come in for a bang/fringe trim, and the man who answered the call was pretty courteous.  That's the first thing I notice about a place.  First is customer service!

The wait was relatively short, and the lady who cut my hair did a decent job, although there was somewhat of a language barrier.  I showed her a picture of what I wanted, and she went on to make it happen...and there was a point that it looked absolutely perfect...except when I had to open my big mouth and made some sort of comment which I can't even remember, but which prompted her to continue cutting.....and so when it was done....I was only okay with it.  She was VERY meticulous though!  I once had a VERY disappointing bang trim from some other stylist that took about one minute!  She, on the other hand, spent a good amount of time, trimming and razoring away....I liked that!  =)

Now...here's the part where the language barrier comes into play....the trim was $10....which I was fine with...but when I handed her a $20 and told her I wanted my change to include "5 1's", she handed me a 5 and a 1!  In other words, $4 tip for her, for a $10 job!!  I didn't want to embarrass her, or myself further, so I just left with it.  Hahaha.  Silly me, eh?

Well, my bangs eventually grew out, and now I am happy with them!

I got my hair cut by Jesse, and I really liked the way it turned out.  He seemed to take careful consideration of what I wanted, and how I wanted to be able to style my hair.  It wasn't quite as short as I wanted, and I didn't like the way he styled it afterwards, but after a few days of wash and wear, I decided it was perfect.

This review is more for Jesse, although I'm liking the "new" salon as well.

I've followed Jesse through his various moves over the years (found Jesse when I moved away from SF after getting married and right around the time my previous stylist retired). I kept Jesse on as my stylist and have since unloaded the husband =)

Jesse is a magician with cutting and coloring hair and takes his time with each client to make sure they all look amazing when they leave the salon. KUDOS JESSE!

This review is for Meiko...and @110 in general.  Yesterday was my first time being there.  I was a bit nervous since I generally have trouble finding hairstylist that can cut my hair well.  To give some information for people who may have the same kind of hair as me and should go here.  I have long, for the most part straight, fine and super thick hair.
Phil or Phillip, i didn't quite catch his name, washed my hair which I felt bad because my hair had been so long and too much work that I hadn't showered for two days and had my hair in a ponytail.  He told me my hair was ridiculously thick as well lol and could see why I wanted to come in.
After getting it washed I went over to Meiko and she was shocked/surprised by all my hair to and also by how much i wanted to cut off.  However, she did a great job! My side bangs blend into the rest of my hair well since I told her i'm never sure if i want to wear my bangs or hid them.  She also gave me a little bit of layers, and suggested thinning my hair out which helped soooo much.  Now my hair feels so much lighter, cleaner, and look better.
I came in looking as bad as I felt (I went home sick from work that day) and coming out happier than a clam.
THANKS @110 FOR A GOOD EXPERIENCE
Oh, I was really happy because they fit me in an hour before they closed on Sunday.  I took a chance here because of that.

I have gotten my hair cut by Jesse and by Toshi - they are both great.

The salon itself is very clean and modernized.  The hair stylist (speaking for Jesse and Toshi) are both great stylists.  I chopped my hair off in September, about 6 inches long... and I went back three times to maintain my short look.  I am growing it out now - but still visit Toshi once in a while for a trim.

Toshi keeps his skills and scicros very sharp.  I believe he goes back to Japan to learn new skills and keep him self up to date.  The hair products that they use are very nice and smells really good - I think they are also from Japan.

    I love at one ten.

At least they know how to cut asian hair. I asked for a simpled layered look and got what I expected. It falls nicely, let's see how it will grow out. She thinned it out near the bottom and seemed to listen to my requests. Though,  I'm not sure why it seems like hair salons take about 20 minutes to actually cut and then 30 minutes to blow dry... this is the second hair salon in San Mateo where the stylist wasn't paying attention to the heat of the hairdryer and  burned my scalp. It's average. I'd go back, but I'd also keep an eye out for better.

Great salon.  Used to be called Shigeo.  My long-time stylist Richard is absolutely awesome.  Top-notch stylist training and credentials.  He really gets to know your likes/dislikes and can fine-tune the perfect hairstyle.  I'm never disappointed with Richard's styles.

Yay!! I think I finally found my salon. I did a lotta research and finally found this salon on yelp. Of course, I booked an appointment with Toshi.
The entire exp was sheer bliss.:) The salon is very cute, homey, nice place.
Toshi is awesome!! I love my hair cut. He was so good. he knew all his stuff... and really saved my hair. I had gotten a terrible cut at this previous salon and my hair was craving for a good hair cut/style.
Am so glad I went to At one ten...I am soooo glad I got my hair cut by Toshi..
    Am surely gonna visit again..:)
