This complex is not flashy or high tech.  It serves its purpose though and at excellent prices.  Recently I've utilized it for the batting cages.  A few years ago I had a membership to the gym portion.  The batting cage area is small.  3 cages for each softball and baseball.  One softball cages is used for hand throwing.  It's a good idea to make a reservation.  Never seen it super crowded but a steady stream of people going in and out.  Note that the cages can goof a bit, the staff is good about giving you a little extra time if fixing it cuts in too much.

If you are looking to hit the ball around try it out here... like I said not high tech but it only cost $35 an hour!!!  That is pretty awesome.  The gym portion is decent too.  Cheap and split by 3 sections.  Cardio, weights and a pool.  It's laid back and functional... all you need.

Management recently implemented a new reservation policy, where you have to pre-pay if making a reservation over the phone, plus they charge $5 for processing. I tried to do this with an AMEX and they insisted on charging me another $5 (no way AMEX has such an onerous deal with them) for a total of a $10 surcharge. They also no longer take reservations for 15 minutes.

ASC's batting cages are still a good deal, but I think their recent media accolades are going to their heads, turning off their regular customers and cooking their Golden Goose.

I like this place they have an alright  set of batting cages, but the main gym is just otay.  Worth a visit and its a good place to get some good hacks in.  You can go for 15 minutes at only 10 dollars, and its also a good place for groups.

Nice people I just wish the batting cages where open later and the batting cages were a little newer.  However, it is definitely worth your money and of course your time which is more valuable.  Check it.

The batting cages here are awesome. We had three people splitting an hour for $35, and it's some of the best money I've spent in a while. You can adjust the speed in a range of 40 to 90 miles per hour. I'll warn you: start slower than you think you ought to. The bats don't have much padding so if you aren't bringing your own I would humbly suggest that you take it easy. My giant palm blister and the soreness in my hips would suggest this, too. On your way out get a bouncy ball from the quarter machine that is a mini pinball machine. YES.

This gym is so freaking chintzy.  It smells like cigarettes, the decorations are crazy (fluorescent-lighted giant Oscar statue, anyone?), and the treadmills will give you an electric shock if you give them enough of your time.

That said, I really love this gym.  I love the fact that I pay like $13/month and they have decent equipment, plus a few classes (haven't managed to attend yet--they're too late for me--but I did notice that at least one incorporates a disco light--score).  I love to run on said electroshock treadmill and watch the boxers train.  And even at "rush hour" after work, it isn't too crowded.  Don't know anything about the pool, though--even though I love to swim, I was turned off by the low light and what I perceived as murky-looking water.

5 Stars for price.  3 for everything else.

The Astoria Sports Complex offers just about everything you could want from a gym.  Cardio, weightlifting, and a pool.  The membership fees are astoundingly cheap but there's a reason for that.  The place is not really all that well maintained.

If your are a stickler for immaculately clean machines and locker rooms, you should shell out the moolah for NYSC down the street.  But if you're like me and you don't require to much of your gym then the deal CAN NOT be beat.

fyi - they do not have an "olympic" pool. maybe i am misunderstanding the term? like as in the real olympics? or like the fantasy olympics where people 2 feet tall swim end to end without going up for air?

I love this gym.  I hate the gym.  I hate meat-head mega buffed guys who hang out at gyms all night and dumb girls who wear expensive gym outfits that match their shoes and makeup to the gym.   I hate people who go to gym and scam on guys/girls/both.  I hate it when people talk to me when I'm wearing Mervyns shorts and a sports bra.  I hate super fit people who can run longer than me on the treadmill. This gym has none of this stuff.  Most people here are pretty ugly and out of shape.  No one talks to me except occasionally some weirdo will say some random thing (like how a bum talks to you as you walk by and you just ignore it).  No one looks at you.  You can wear a bright yellow shirt that says Kansas on it and red sweatpants and a multi colored headband and payless sneakers and no one even notices or cares.  I have seen people working out in jeans here.  It's kind of like a dive bar in a gym.  The aroebic instructor is overweight. It's awesome.  You go there and work out and go home and no one bothers you.  it's what a gym should be.  And it's super cheap.  Minus one star because they replaced one of the arm weight machines that I liked with little vending machines that sell jelly beans and gum, the tv's are always broken, and I'm pretty sure the owner is a republican.

as far as a gym this place is utilitarian and good for the money. plenty of machines, i've never seen this place completely crowded and they have a pool. perfect.
